Traditional Sambar Powder

  • This video shows the procedure for making the traditional style of Sambar Powder.The ingredients are sun dried and then ground in a mill to a fine powder. for those who don't have access to mill, they can be lightly dry roasted and ground in a blender at home. This should then be sieved to get a fine powder.
    Ingredients(traditional)
    Dry red Chilli 1/2 kg
    Coriander seeds 3/4 kg
    Thuvar dal 300 gm
    channa dal 150 gm
    Black pepper 100 gm
    methi seeds 50 gm
    Turmeric sticks 25 gm
    For grinding in mixer at home
    Dry red chilli 3cups
    Coriander seeds 2 cups
    Tuvar dal 1/2 cup
    Channa dal 1/8 cup
    Black pepper 1 Tbsp
    Methi seeds 1 Tsp
    Turmeric powder

Keep up the good work. With all the dramabazi videos out there, yours stands out for its authenticity. Best part, you reply to queries.     Correct i have been watching so many sambar powder recipes in you tube .but almost all use jeera for sambar powder which we normally use only for rasam powder.this is the perfect measurements which our grandma used in village.thank u for reminding me the old practices

      But its not wrong to use jeera.. brahmins use lil bit of jeera to get that brahmins style sambar.. so there is variety of sambar powder.. all are authentic from their ancestors..

    Yes maam in our family we dont add black pepper and we add udad daal ...and dry coconut ...of course it can be stored for a short period ..i loved ur recipe too maam

    Gita, I love your channel and you speak very good English I am English so I think you are very good your cooking channel is lovely but you do fall short of one thing, the microphone you use is too far away from your mouth it needs to be much closer to pic up your lovely voice especially when you have traffic noise from outside keep up the good work, ALL THE VERY BEST Bob in the UK

    Thank u maam for posting amazing videos and tips i had a question i have seen some people put asafoetida in the sambar powder so my question is it should i put peringkayam in the powder itself or while cooking only?

      Kitty no need to wash. You can wipe it with a dry cloth if you like.
