TRY THIS! I found this on a different forum but is very helpful. My dad also told me to always check for a good ground for 12 volt systems (your car). My son's 2012 Kia Soul had the starting issue. It would click sometimes and would usually start with a little turning n and off the key but sometimes after several minutes of trying. The fix is to remove the ground wires from frame and sand all the paint off to bare metal to get a good ground. There was one from the battery to the frame on the drivers side and one on the passenger side from the frame to the motor. I also added my own ground wire from the ground (negative or black) on the battery to the motor. Be sure your battery terminals are kept clean too. We have not had any issue since.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO. I tried starting my 2016 Kia Soul a few days ago and had the EXACT same problem. Mines only has 58,000 miles on it and I've only had it for a little more than 3 years. (Bought it new in January 2017). I will Definitely be calling the Dealership
This sorta happened to my car when I came back home from seeing you guys last year. At first I thought it was the starter (cause it sounded the same way) but it turned out it was a battery issue. I came home to like 25 degree weather and my car was just sitting there, not running for the 5 days I was with you guys. My uncle jump started my car and we took it to Nissan. And they said it was the battery. Luckily nothing was wrong with it...just lost some juice from the cold weather and not having it run. But a few times before that and a few after it would *click* a few times before starting.
Yup. Very similar. I think a lot of modern cars do the same thing, once Voltage drops below something like 12 it just sends a fault to the computer and says don't even start unless we see more juice.
@@dosomethingeveryday2767 Thank you! I had a 2012 Soul this happened to, no one could find anything wrong, my friend cleaned the cables, etc.... it started fine, I traded it in for a 2015 Soul and just last month Sept 2020 it wouldn’t start just clicked....... my friend cleaned the cables again and until last week it worked fine Oct 10th 2020....... we watched your video and my mechanic is going to put a new battery in , there is 153000 miles on this car, it’s 5.5 years old!!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge...... could you please follow up and let us know if the needing a new battery was actually the issue? Does the car start just fine now? P. Murphy
Thanks so much for this! My 2016 Soul did this when I tried to start it this morning and we’re going to go get a new battery. :) luckily we just got paid this morning.
Batteries last about 3-5 years in my experience… They always put the worst batteries in from the dealers. SMH. 🤦♂️ Good luck with a free battery love to hear what happened about that…. 🙏
Thanks for that comformation, i asked a bunch of people and they were all like. Wow you got 5 years out of a battery? So yeah apparently they don't last as long. Maybe its because of the loads we ask of them. Like, back in the day my 79 Malibu Wagon only had to power the dash lights, headlights, and tail lights, and that battery was like 15 years old.
I have a 2012 .kia soul with 2.0 140000 miles on it and it still has the original battery. Love my kia though mine has only needed minor repairs brakes and stuff. Guess i should go ahead and replace just in case.
Woah. Thanks a lot man for the video. I've jump started the car with both, a portable battery and another car. None if it worked. Until I turned off my radio and AC inside. Thank you!
I'm considering buying a Soul. Wife's 2011 Prius still has the original Toyota factory battery (the 12 volt one). Her last Prius was a 2004 and its 12 volt battery was around 12 years old when replaced. Not sure if that's because a Prius puts less stress on regular car batteries, or because the Toyota batteries are better quality.
I have a 2012 kia soul 1.6L, replaced a bad batter as what autozone recommended. fuse box burns out the fuses still. any recommendation on where to start looking for a short?
Yup. Had that issue today. Park, no Park with foot brakes, no Remove key, try, no Repeat, no. Shifted to neutral, yup. Called it some words that ARE NOT programmed into a Speak n Spell, then went about my day
Jelsma Outdoors The diode would have to be one that goes to the field coil and it would have to short to draw from the battery. A short on a coil becomes an open real quick. If it is a diode in the bridge, they can go short or open and they will not draw from the battery. Perhaps you could explain how this could happen. I don't see it myself but maybe I am missing something.
Got a 2011 kia venga 1.4 diesel put new battery in and new starter motor in, and is still clicking like it has a faulty battery or starter motor. What else could it be? Diagnostic found no faults.
Having the same issue on one of our cars, hopefully this helps me diagnose it. I just bought this battery two years ago, don’t batteries last longer then two years?
Usually yes. Depends where you bought it and how much you spent. You can get super cheap batteries that will fail after 3 years or you can get batteries that will go 5-7 years. Ante up when you buy. If $10-$20 price difference is a huge concern, you shouldn't be driving
I jumped my car in opposite polarity, now it wont start. ignition doesn't start but lights turn on, battery is 12.44V after charging it. I know my alternator is bad since it used to suddenly turn off while driving. Any advice how to diagnose the problem before going to a mechanic and get ripped off?

Updated this POS Kis Soul I worked on had a locked up motor at about 85 thousand miles. 🤦♂️. What a jk. Waisted my time 🤣
Good job on the video Brudda, efficient and to the point.
It should be noted that Kia only gives a 2 year warranty on there batteries. Also that they say 3-4 years is a "good" battery life expectancy.
This is true among many manufacturers. I faced the 2-year replacement issue with a different brand of car.
i was just overall surprised. i thought batteries lasted 10 years, cause i have some that old that function fine.
dosomethingeveryday 2 It seems like they used to last longer. These days I'm lucky to get 3 years out of a battery.

I was just having the same issue. Read your comment, thought I'd give turning off the radio a try and sure as shit it started right up. Thank you!!
Omg thank you my parents just got me this car for my 16 birthday this really helped me
So you mean simple battery replacement solved the issue?
That thing went down to 6 volts
Mine just did this yesterday. Would start with a jump. Replaced the battery and it still does it.
Thank you for posting, you helped me solve my issue, keep it up.
at 1:15, when you said "watch how it jumps", is it normal for it to jump/drop? what does it mean if it does drop/doesn't drop?
It was from the massive load of the starter that it went down. If it would have started. It would have gone right back up
when my engine is off, voltage reads a little over 12v, that's a healthy indicator right?
@@belowmars yes thats a good sign of a healthy battery. If yoi checked it and it was at 10 or so. Then you have a problem
You are crazy if you expect a battery to last for 10 years

The starter is gonna be the biggest draw. I would check that
Try starting in neutral. Should reset ignition.
Howlin' Wolf thanks man! Seriously sitting in my Kia that won’t start, came across your comment and the car started in neutral! Huge thanks!
Yup.
Had that issue today.
Park, no
Park with foot brakes, no

Repeat, no.
Shifted to neutral, yup.

Disconnect the negative terminal. Wait five minutes. Should reset system.
Nope
Worked. Thanks.
did you test the alternator?
Just the fact that the battery was getting full amps after it was running. I didn't bench test it tho.
if a diode is bad then an alternator draws energy when not running causing battery to go dead.
Jelsma Outdoors
The diode would have to be one that goes to the field coil and it would have to short to draw from the battery. A short on a coil becomes an open real quick. If it is a diode in the bridge, they can go short or open and they will not draw from the battery.
