    I had this very issue with my Dad's 2000 Ford Expedition yesterday morning, except that at attempted start, I got the "machine gun" clicking from under the hood. Checked & cleaned the terminals & connections, and had no corrosion. Checked voltage with a MUCH less expensive multimeter (yes, one of those free ones from Harbor Freight, back when they still did freebies...), got the same 10.5 volt reading. Decided to throw a battery charger on it, but after quite some time (overnight), voltage was only up to 11.5. Jump started it this morning with my Mom's truck, and confirmed voltage on the battery was 14.6. Same diagnosis - one bad battery.
    I had left the truck running, so drove it to my local O'Reilly Auto Parts, and found out the battery was only two years old, and still under warranty! Woot WOOOT!!! The Assistant Manager and I had them swapped in about five minutes, and the warranty on the new battery reset for another three years. Boom!!!
    Now a lot of folks might turn their nose up at my cheap multimeter, but for a free item, and on something as simple as this kind of a reading, it's ideal. Heck even at full price ($6.99 + tax) it's inexpensive enough to keep in my truck tool box just for situations like this. I have a service regimen on all of mine that I change out the batteries in each of them at least once a year.
    Really enjoyed your video, it was an excellent tutorial on how to diagnose an issue with easy steps to follow.
    Aloha!! 🤙🏼

    I know that this is from a few years ago but a couple of tips for those who wanna stay safe: always wear gloves when messing with a battery, that corrosive stuff is bad news for the skin. Also never use a car to jump a larger vehicle like a truck, it can drain the car battery life and most likely won't have enough power to charge the larger battery. Otherwise you did a great job explaining the process of elimination.

However a few seconds later you see the battery turned the opposite (correct) way. Good catch and save sir.

  • @ninemilliondollars
    @ninemilliondollars 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    If you use a device like a "SUNER POWER Digital 12V Car Battery Tester," you have the additional capability of analyzing the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). If it shows the CCA is below what your vehicle needs, the battery is bad. This is a great indicator of the batteries performance. For those interested in the math, electrical Power-in-Watts = Amps x Volts. So, for example, if you need 6,000 watts to start the car, that means the 12-volt battery must have 500 CCA (12 Volts times 500 CCA = 6,000 Watts). And if you buy a more powerful battery with 550 CCA, the voltage can drop to as low as 10.909 volts and you can still start the vehicle because 550 Amps x 10.909 Volts is about 6,000 watts.

    Although your primary concern was to restore operation as quickly as possible, the battery might have been saved with a desulphation procedure. At least, checking sulphation might have provided a cheaper option than battery replacement. Batteries which simply "go bad" for no apparent reason are at the end-point of sulphation.

    Just one other point to add to an excellent video..On many vehicles, the alternator only charges when the engine revs reach a certain minimum valve, so if you do the alternator test with the engine ticking over, you get a false reading. Best thing to do is get someone to rev the engine gently up to about 1500 to 2000rpm and you should see the voltage rise to around 14v or just over...

    • @Gazzab6
      @Gazzab6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s interesting to know. I thought the alternator charged the battery even when the engine was ticking over. Incidentally, roughly how long does an alternator take to charge the battery say from 12.4V? Would I need to be driving for a few hours?

    • @peterevans8194
      @peterevans8194 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gazzab6 I think it's to to do with the regulator cct associated with the alternator, and it varies between vehicles...
      Many years ago, I used to have a 2.8 diesel Isuzu Trooper which I used to off-road...I had been staying at a cabin for several days using the vehicle everyday, but only creeping about very slowly in low gear at low rpm.
      After about the forth day, the batteries would not turn over the engine. Luckily I was in the AA and one of their recovery vehicles came out and jump started me and it was the mechanic who explained the issue.
      He also said an alternator and regulator off a particular old Ford would cure it, although I would have to adapt the mounts ect to get it to fit...

      @@peterevans8194 Thanks for the info Peter. I have a 2016 Honda CR-V 1.6 Diesel that has an EFB battery. When I noticed the battery labouring when starting the engine, I had my alternator checked at my dealership and everything seemed to be okay with the alternator. Just over two months later I had to replace the battery but I only had the car which was brand new for three and a half years - not very long for a battery I thought. Three and a half years later, the exact same thing has happened. This has also happened to my friend who has the same car. It’s a mystery. I’ve been checking my battery and it is showing 12V (12.2) after driving for an hour. I have removed it this morning to charge in the garage and it is now at 12.8V. I have tested the alternator with the engine ticking over and it was 14.2V but there were no electrics inside the car turned on. I believe EFB batteries use a lower amperage but that’s a bit over my head so I don’t know if that’s an advantage or not.

      @@peterevans8194 yes it was like for like as far as I know. I’ve done a little research this afternoon and the EFB type is for medium sized cars with simple auto start / stop technology. My car isn’t top of the range so hasn’t got all the electric gadgets but it has enough and I charge my sat nav en-route quite a lot so that will all add to the consumption. I might go for an AGM type battery which are also for stop / start vehicles with more demanding electrical gadgets and the product description specifies for use with SUV’s which mine is. Maybe Honda have chosen the wrong battery for the model I have and it makes you wonder why it’s happening to other owners.

  • @JoshSmith-wo7zw
    @JoshSmith-wo7zw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Keep in mind alot of these newer vehicles are using AGM batteries over the old wet cell batteries and as such don't run the charge voltage over 14 volts. It's usually below 14 volts. Somewhere in the 13.4 13.6 range most of the time. Also on older vehicles say 10 to 12 plus years old. Make sure your battery cables aren't breaking down internally as this is probably why you're old alternator went up in the first place and if you put a new one on there without changing the cable or cables. It's eventually going to fry your new alternator. Now it might take 6 months to a year but it will eventually kill it. The warranty on the new alternator does not cover an alternator that failed due to a bad battery cable. They will literally break down internally. If you pull the insulator jacket and the copper wire inside is turning white and green. It's time for a new battery cable. So be really careful and thorough with the cables. Believe me these companies nowadays you just look at it wrong and they'll void the warranty on you. Therefore don't give it anymore help than you have too.

    Very good video brother. You forgot something though that happens often. Even with an alternator that charges, 14 volts can have a bad diode that when engine is turned off drains a battery, and this is why most people that change out dead batteries end up with a change of their alternator within about a week, but they think (being most mechanics dont even know about diode common failure)is that it just sort of happened that two things went wrong. Have a parts store check your alternator diode before you go buy a new batttery

      Thanks, as a women who didnt even know where the alternator in my tatta indica was, i learned a lot now. My previous battery with a two year warrantly, sudden did not show the number which it suppose to be at my garage. Then they say it is the alternator, then the guy said that he push a plug back in the alternator and the car start again. And off i go back home, very thankful, and praising God. Vryday morning, when i start the car, it did take. After lunch i start the car nothing at all. Now, i am not married, i am staying in a security complec whereby everyone is at their work places, but luckily for me, i found one man and one very old one, at that stage, they tried to kickstart the car, nothing happened. So i phoned outsurance my insurer, and they send a young with jump starts, the small one which he usually use, is broken he said. So we try the charging, nothing happens, the two men explain to me iro the colours on the battery, my battery was standing on the last colour, i think the no colour on, which was a indicates that the battery is sóoooooo dead. Then we took a battery out of one of the men's car, and put it in my car, and it start strongly, so that was not the alternator. My brother doesnt felt sure that it is not the alternator, which is very difficult to replace because there in no tatta dealers left in South Africa. So i went to builders and i bought a small rechargeable charger which can be charged in the cigarette holder or be charged inside my house. Mom's car's cat converter was stolen last month, thieves are desperate because she has a 2003 Toyota Corolla, but they stole it anyways in the middle of the day at a Walmart parking lot. Filed the claim, got approved, but since this crime is being committed so often, parts are backordered. After waiting a month, the Toyota dealership then got to working on it, but called last week to say the alternator and battery were also bad, and estimate is around $950 out of pocket. We told them just work on the cat for now. My sister and I picked it up today, had them jump the car and it started right away. The guy at the front said, yeah, I think the battery is still okay, but he said don't install a new battery without first replacing the alternator because that will damage the car. The car started right away,, but noticed the battery indicator light was on the dashboard. Once we got home, looked in the hood and checked the connections, positive was loose, tighten it, started the car, the battery light went away. I borrowed a battery voltage tester, had no real clue what to look for, but it showed "Good" on the screen, and the reading came back at 13.53. I guess that's how much voltage it had left. As a woman, we become easy targets for the repair shops. I have no brothers, just mom and her 4 daughters taking care of everyday business. Thank you for your video, it was extremely helpful.

    Great video with detailed description.
    I was driving down the street and my car stopped. Wouldn't take jump, cost me $125 for a tow. Took the battery our & took it to Auto zone got the battery charged, car ran well/long enough for me center the car in the garage, then conked out again. I'm afraid to get another battery charge, don't have the coin for these tows and have yet to have the alternator checked. I'm going to "gamble" it's the alternator- have it replaced, maybe change the serp- belt and hope I don't go broke, in the process... I also had a burning smell before the car shut down again, for the last time. My neighbor says alternator,
    I dunno what to think.
    I believe I could take the alternator off myself to be checked or buy 1-id those du-hickeys(but don't you need power) to check the alt?
    I'm not risking-tryna get a charge or jump to go A-Zone again, to have both components checked (only) to have it stop again.
    I was (not in a mean way) hoping you had alternator problems, just so I could see how you handled it. The symptoms you had
    (clicking starter), I had, as well. but your Problem was easily solved
    w/a new battery. My battery is only 2-yrs old yet, was drained when I took to "AZ" to be tested.
    Recharged battery ran for 5- mins. Then stopped again
    I'm in a quandary ..

    If anyone owns a GMC/Chevrolet Truck after 2012, please be aware that ECM may be programmed to NOT run the Alternator unless the Voltage drops to a certain level. The Standard practice using a Multimeter on the Battery may not work if the Battery Voltage is above 12.0 volts. You should go to a Battery Store / AutoZone / Dealership and have the Battery Load tested, it's the only way to know if your Battery is good. Always attach the Negative side of the lead to the Negative side of the Battery first, not the Positive.

    Battery connector on both positive and negative should not be all the way down on the post. It should be flush with the top of the post with a space between the connector and the top of the battery to prevent the 'crud' from forming.
    A multi-meter across the battery should reveal about 12.2 - 12.6 volts. If not, some vehicles won't attempt a start lower than 11.5 volts.
    If you do get the vehicle started, check the voltage of the battery again and it should reveal between 14.2 - 14.7 volts. If not, then the alternator (generator) is bad.
    Turning off all accessories and unplugging your cell phone before turning off the engine after parking prevents a heavy load on the battery when attempting to start the next time you need to go somewhere. After turning everything off and taking your foot off the brake after putting the vehicle in park let it run for 30 seconds to recharge the battery. Exit the vehicle quickly locking the doors and pressing the lock button on your remote turns off the lights to save battery.
    Leaving your foot on the brake after you park and turn off the engine drains the battery quickly. My neighbor did it all the time and wondered why his battery was dead all the time. Literally ALL the time. Practically weekly. He would sit in his vehicle sometimes after turning off the engine for 5 minutes sometimes more using his cell phone with his foot on the brake.
    I recommend Interstate Battery.
    The bracket to secure the battery is critical and should be replaced with the factor O.E.M. part. If your battery moves while driving it could cause a multitude of problems to include wrecking.
    That truck sounds like junk.
    Modifying the air filter can cause difficult starting. Just noticing.
    I hope this helps.
    Master Mechanic.

    One of the most important parts of the battery is that bracket or strap, whatever the case is, that holds the battery down. Yes you don’t want to hit the brakes hard or be going up / down a hill at a very steep angle and have it fly out. Another reason to have the battery secured is to “ minimize” the vibrations that the battery will experience. Sure as the engine runs there is always a barely noticeable vibration but having the battery moving around a little bit more will cause damage to the battery and shorten its life dramatically. Ya it’s going to shake around a bit as the vehicle hits potholes or speed bumps etc. but a shake once in a while is not as damaging as a fairly steady moderate vibration.

    I had my alternator give out on me one day, I'm glad you went the electrical tester route but there is a better way to test if it truly is your alternator. If you can turn your car on (Jumped or battery not completely drained) then while it is running, pull off your negative ground on your battery. If your car dies then its your alternator. Your battery is good for Starting your car, your alternator is good for keeping your car alive. Since his car wouldn't start the battery made more sense. Another way to test the alternator is if you can get metal to stick to it. I think it needs to be on to test this, idk I haven't tested this way cause the battery was a lot simpler. On or off, if metal won't stick then its safe to say its bad. One none productive question, why are you in Hawaii and have a Texas sticker on your car?

    The battery is not really the good one but it's work , at the beginning of the video the red post was on the right facing the front of the vehicle and the black post was near the firewall and when you put the new battery in the red post was near the firewall and the negative post was facing the front of the vehicle and nothing at the base of the battery to secure it to the vehicle . But all the tests were well done . Thank you for sharing .

    10.4v is exactly one cell short (1.2v × 6cells) of a 12.6v battery. A bad cell most certainly because the plates got damaged jostling around without the battery secured via the bracket. Anytime you have 10.4v, you have 5 cells fully charged.
