Naoki Urasawa & Mai Yoneyama on the Passion of Drawing (Spoilers!) | PLUTO | Netflix Anime
/ @netflixanime
When the world’s seven most advanced robots and their human allies are murdered one by one, inspector Gesicht soon discovers that he’s also in danger. -
Naoki Urasawa and Mai Yoneyama. This is pure gold! I love it when artists genuinely come together and gleefully talk shop. It’s so inspirational! Like when Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima collaborated. Urusawa-san’s line art is so emotionally free and dynamic. Yoneyama-san’s line art is so precisely detailed and clean. IPluto’s story, characters, and art styles was terrific.
Ramo Pluto
If youre a fan of this kind of content I'd look around for his Manben series he's had conversations like this with Junji Ito, Takao Saito, Inio Asato,-- it's really eye opening about the art experience of making manga.
It's something that AI can never achieve. Drawing is a timeless and passionate experience, and I'm glad that these two masters have not used AI.
Ironic because pluto is about ai gaining humanity
What we often depict as AI in science fiction and "AI" in reality are two very different things.@@MINIPRO27
Of course real artists don't care about shit like that.
@@MegaPieru3000tá certíssimo
Funny that you say that when the anime is about AI becoming more human 💀
This is my first time seeing Yoneyama sensei in real life!! I'm glad she's getting more recognition because she's seriously talented and I love all of her works!!
What anime has she done
@mongezibuthelezi1032 most notable works of her are the Cyberpunk Edgerunners ending, the singer Eve's MV Yoku or even that famous meme that's with the Kali Uchis' song high (im talking about the meme where a boy turns into a girl) which is also a MV for Hiroyuki Sawano and Wit studios MV
Her style is very distinctive and can be recognised at a glance
same ngl her voice is so deep i love it
@@garydickson Also Kiznaiver anime chara designs
half the video was her talking about how she doesn't draw manga or anime and mainly draws singular frames lol@@mongezibuthelezi1032
I love Urasawa's urge to convey his ideas by quickly sketching them on paper instead of explaining them with complex or detailed descriptions.
It’s perfectly in line with his style of storytelling. Monster is a perfect example of the fine details in a character’s face, posture etc telling a huge amount of the story. The dialogue is still brilliant, but it becomes the stitching that holds everything together rather than the centerpiece
show don't tell
This is what's happen when you close yourself and put your life on art for so much time, you start to talk with art and your mouth is like the left hand, it helps but is not your main way to do things
Naoki Urasawa is incredibly fast at drawing! A very interesting discussion between these two incredible artists.
The way Yoneyama-sensei almost teared up when talking about Epsilon's hand... 😢
And the revelation about that scene where Atom meeting Gesicht for the first time, gave me goosebumps! Urasawa-sensei is really the master of storytelling.
Thank you Netflix for bringing these two of my inspirational artist. Pure talent. It's all about the journey.
As an artist myself too, I teared up a little bit at the end. The passion and love to draw and to be a storyteller is so much fun, I always enjoy watching other people having fun while drawing, and they had great smiles on their faces. I came across Urasawa's work at a vulnerable time in my life and his love of life itself and art inspired me a lot. It's incredible to be able to see him converse with Yoneyama, another artist I have admired for some years. Her attention to detail is exquisite... Thank you for this video and the translation so that it can reach everyone, I enjoyed it very much. I will watch this video more times in the future
Man, the Pluto anime came out so great, I hope to someday see an adaption on the same level for 20th Century Boys.
As awesome PLUTO is monster is his Magnus opus
@@OscarSanchez-vd8lq As awesome as Monster is, 20th Century boys is his magnus opus xDD
@@AdrianLopez-sr3dd yeah I think so too just started reading it I like the mc for a Change but billy bat is so underrated too
@@OscarSanchez-vd8lq I have to give billy bat another chance, it didn't get me hooked last time I tried. When would you say it starts getting good?
@@AdrianLopez-sr3dd I might be one of the few that liked it from chapter 1 but at times I force myself to keep reading but it was worth it 👍💯
As an artist (I work in the animation industry) I can totally confirm that this is the average interaction when we meet another fellow artist. We just nerd out about art really hard.
This is amazing! I hope we see more of these interviews and focus in anime/ manga creators. As an artist and an anime fan I can never get enough of this! I’m glad my Netflix subscription fees is leading up to this!
I’ve said this before, but Netflix could easily upload this type of content to Netflix itself as a bonus addition to the movie/show
Search for Naoki Urasawa no Manben here on YT all subbed, where he has conversations like this with Junji Ito, Takao Saito, Inio Asano,-- it's really eye opening about the art experience of making manga.
they look the same lol
I always love hearing Otomo Katsuhiro getting his props. There really is no understating how influential on so many levels and in so many ways Akira was and still continues to be. I could also watch and listen to these two all day, just a joy to see masters at work and talking about what they love.
Now if only Netflix would commission as perfect an adaptation for Billy Bat as they did for Pluto... one can dream.
There is such a lack of respect and appreciation for the people who shaped the industry outside of Asia unfortunately, I mean there are probably over a million anime fans that don't even know who Tezuka is.
I would watch an entire series of videos of this kind.
Having amazing artists reflecting about art and their perspective about it on screen is priceless. And 37 minutes of that nonetheless.
Thanks for making this available
Good for you since Naoki Urasawa does have an entire series of videos talking with creators like that. It's called Manben. Sadly, there are very few episodes subbed on the internet. This one is basically an Manben episode. Look it up here on youtube and you may find some, Manben Naoki Urasawa.
@@theLikou1 Wow, didn't know that, thank you ! I will search it.
If only my japanese was better I wouldn't need the subs. I can understand to a certain extent at least.
This was a fantastic drawing session. I felt a lot of joy seeing these two brilliant artists at work. Their conversation was deeply natural and relatable. I admired the respect Urasawa and Yoneyama had for each other's art. How one draws so insanely fast and the other draws so beautifully. Truly an inspirational video.
God bless you guys for hearing our cries for the subtitle. Just seeing Naoki sensei having a good time makes me happy and also Mai in the video as well is a blessing
This video made my heart happy. I even teared up a little bit. There so much depth and love for art throughout the conversation. Super inspiring
This is such a gold anime, with two brilliant minds involved, lovely. Delightful.
this is basically a masterclass of depicting story in a single frame/drawing
Waaaa this is the first time I see conversations between two artists like this. I really like this video, I hope more of this come out too. I also agree that the artstyles from the past was mostly proportionally correct.
THIS A BLESSING THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LETTING US WITNESS THIS 🙏
Thank you netflix for such a wonderful, insightful and inspirational video. Would love to see more stuff like this
Waited for this to be subbed, sankyuu so much!
The explanation of Gesicht leaning forward a monumental step is mind-blowing. A few lines are enough to make such a difference.
Art just keep on surprising me. This is an amazing concept of an exchange between 2 GOATs.
Can't believe this is happening, thank you so much for this!
I am seeing Yoneyama sensei for the first time in real life, thank you Netflix Anime for covering the illustrator that inspires me the most 🙏
I have always loved her work and seeing her in this video really moves my heart!
Yoneyama Mai and Urasawa Naoki in one video? Thank you so much for bringing these two artists together, Netflix! Can't wait to watch Pluto soon!
I forget they live in one timeline
i love how this video accurately explains the passion for manga art
I just loved the whole video !!! That was a nice talking. Urasawa basically gave us a free masterclass of how to draw !!!
two of my biggest inspiratons 😭❤ thank you for this video!!
These two are so inspiring ❤
What an admirable person Naoki Urasawa, a teacher who maintains his humility and is always learning. I greatly respect his work and his way of being. I recommend to those who are more interested in this type of interviews to look for a series of documentaries Manben by Naoki Urasawa, they are not wasted. You can always learn something from him and all the other artists who appear speaking and drawing.
Seeing the end of the interview brought me so much relief because in the entire video they were put at an unnatural distance from each other, however at the end we can see how they can finally sit side by side just like any other normal person would.
Got a lot to learn, thank you so much for this video!
Thank you for adding English subtitles
If youre a fan of this kind of content I'd look around for his Manben series he's had conversations like this with Junji Ito, Takao Saito, Inio Asato,-- it's really eye opening about the art experience of making manga. He goes really in-depth, talks about the development of artists and their careers over decades it's actually one of the best interviews when you get to see artists who get it talking to other artists that "get it"
This was wonderful to watch. So much to learn.
I had an amazing time watching this video, fun and educational at the same time!
I am quite envious of how the artist was able to keep up their passion and drew every detail with every effort they had. unlike me, my situation was different where I was required to forget that passion in order to survive the life though it feels like I was forced to forget that dream because there are a lot of opportunities better than that and it needs sacrifice where you eventually give it up for just because of how unfortunate my situation is. even now I still long for it but the passion isn't there anymore. I was hoping to bring it back even though it might take a lot of years again because I already started before even though it's only midway.
What an eye opening conversation
The Legend and the Number 1 illustrator in Modern Era......
lemme get some popcorn to watch this video
wow yoneyama is so humble and respectful, this was a treat to watch
Two legends in one frame!
This video earned my subscription, keep it going Netflix!
So happy to see this video translated :)))
I love the collaboration between both Yoneyama and Urasawa! Love both artists ! :'D
Inspiring masters! Their passion for drawing made me want to pick up a pencil and draw! Thank you so much Netflix Anime for sharing! Time to draw some more!
this was very interesting, inspiring as well
Masterpiece ❤
Very nice work. Was one of the fews netflix productions I liked.
Such a great talk that any artist can relate to! Definitely love it ❤
The topic at the end of the video about copying techniques reminded me of his work Billy Bat.
I've been a fan of yoneyama mai since 2019, after watching the kiznaiver anime and being blown away by the visuals, but even after all these years this is the first time I saw her face irl
absolutely love that URASAWA MENTIONED MOEBIUS i love this guy even more now
Masterclass🙌
Thank you Netflix for bringing content like this to everyone. Seriously inspiring.
Hey Netflix please bring over “Manben” from Naoki Ursawa and give him the budget to get some of our greats from shuiesha on it!
I love how simultaneously me and Mai Yoneyama go, wow! universal awe
Took me like 4 episodes into Pluto to realize this is an astro boy adaptation!!!! I never watched Astroy boy, just thought Atom's name in japanese Atomu sounds like 阿童木 in chinese
The series and story and art and characters are soooo amazing!!!! And upon googling I found out Urasawa Naoki also did MONSTER which was another favorite of mine!!!!
I'm ready to read everything this man has ever published ITS SO GOOD
Thanks for saying it I don't like astro boy
so that's would be a waste of time for me to watch pluto
But I love monster and 20th century boy 😅
I totally relate to Yoneyama when she kept bringing up pretty characters...Urasawa's middle age men characters are so cool (I keep thinking of Smith) but his pretty male characters are just so uniquely beautiful and stunning!!!
beautiful
Such Talents ❤❤❤❤love them Thank you Netflix
Perfect ✨
Gracias Netflix por este hermoso clip.
Naoki Urasawa is forever my favorite mangaka:) Monster and 20th Century Boys are such masterpiece because of their incredible plot and characters development

Naoki, you are the GOAT!
I love his work! Especially twenty century boys~ Thank you Urusawa!
I was delaying reading 20th century boys for half a year... finally finished it this week and it was the best manga I've read in a loooong time
SO COOLL
Knowing to of Urasawa works (Monster and Pluto), It is fun to see how he likes to draw european characters. Maybe because he can have fun drawing different faces and expresions.
20:43 talking about AI! Good insights from both amazing artists!
I can't contain my excitement for this
As (self-proclaimed) mangaka artist myself, I learn a lot from this omg
