@@simcard867 Honestly I don't think the story's very sympathetic to Yozo at all - keep in mind that most of the 'sympathetic' moments come from Oba himself, who in this story is an unreliable narrator. Sure, Yozo comes off as a sympathetic character but that's only if you take his word over the horrible things we see him do in the story. In fact, I think one strong point of Ito's adaptation is that he makes Yozo *less* sympathetic by adding in more deaths for which he is responsible for, as well as allowing the reader to see his actions and how they conflict with his own narration. It really helps to bring Oba's complexity to the forefront of the story
One thing I noticed about Ito's page layout is it's well placed. I don't know if it's Ito himself but it seems he sets up a feeling of suspense and you turn the page and the shocking image is one the opposite page. It's like you hesitate to turn the page to see it.
i've heard that referred to as the "page turn effect" before, and its actually why the movie adaptations of itos work hasn't done well, it can't produce the same feeling you get from the suspense of turning the page.
I read Uzumaki back in middle school at the public library. Saw it on the shelf and was super curious. Ever since then it's been in my mind. I could forget about the book completely but then out of nowhere a few years later my brain is like "remember that horror book about spirals?" And I'm like "Uzumaki! I should read that again!"

i've only read no longer human by him. jesus christ most incredible piece of art i have ever consumed, loved everything about it and left me depressed.
They can't stop printing his stuff in English until it's all out! I think this should be enshined in law somehow. Then somehow we need to invest all our technological progress in keeping Junji as healthy as possible for as long as possible so he can write tons more stuff, lol. I also desperately want to have a full Souichi book.
My manga collection consists basically of Monster by Naoki Urasawa, all Junji Ito work available in english and the adaptation of The Strange Tale of Panorama Island by Suehiro Maruo lol
I also recommend 'no longer human' it's about Osamu Dazai (Author of the original novel) experiencing some very hard moments in his life. He shares his experiences dealing with self-isolation, anxiety, depression and more. it's absolutely NOT for children as it contains some very graphic moments. The adaptation by Ito will leave you terrified after you read it. it's a very good horror manga and definitely worth checking out.
these are all toptier manga, how about: Pluto, Monster, 20th century boys, attack on titan(it has some rough art at the beginning but an amazing story), death note, and ofcourse jojo. (the first part of jojo is kinda lame, you really have to torture yourself through it. The second part of jojo is descent but everything after part 2 is simply amazing and absolutely worth it. You could also just start reading the 7th part called "steel ball run", because it is set in an alternate universe, so you could consider it a reboot, jojo part 7 is absolutely god tier manga just like berserk.)
check out Innocent and its sequel, Innocent Rouge. it's a dark, gorey story set in 18th century France and the art is absolutely immaculate. also pretty short at 99 and 88 chapters respectively
Uzumaki takes the cake when it comes to overall story-telling, and imagery. He absolutely out-did himself on that one, and it will forever be my favorite Junji Ito/horror manga also mainly since it was my introduction to being a manga reader in general. Always loved anime, but took me until only about a year ago to start reading manga.
Same here. I bought Uzumaki after i finished my last exam of the fourth semester while waiting on my train home. Began to read it during the ride and became hooked. Soon after that i bought Gyo and Shiver. Then i got myself Berserk, Blame!, Monster, Dragonball, Lone Wolf and Cub and Fist of the North Star. I love manga much more than anime now.
Wow, there's a lot that haven't been published yet - nice! Fantastic video once again, very informative and enjoyable. I have only bought Uzumaki, Tomie and Shiver thus far but I'm planning on picking all of them up over some years.
I love Junji Ito, I have every one of the Viz editions of his works and one art book. I knew about Lovesickness but I had no idea that there were two more scheduled after and I am so excited, thank you for pointing these out! I hope that Viz keeps up with the Ito collections and is able to release most if not all in English, I would buy every single one to complete my collection.
Iv never read any of Junji Ito stories before but Iv known about his work for a long time and after this video, I think I’m about to go buy some of them now lol
I think this is the only complete and comprehensive guide to Junji Ito's works I've ever watched. I'm new to Junji Ito, bought Uzumaki a few months ago, blew me away, and now planning to collect all of those beautiful collections. This video helped a lot. Nice work!
I read Uzumaki as I was 14, and then I was terrified of horrors, so I had awful nightmare afterwards. Now it's the feeling I crave for while reading/watching horrors
First discovered junji ito in 2020,went into a comic shop with a friend who brought a junji artwork book while we were there. She showed me some of the art from the book and I fell in love. Went online and ordered uzumaki when I got home(the comic shop didn't have any junji books other than the art book) read it and I was hooked, now have all the books printed so far baring cat diary. Waiting for liminal zone to be released now.
This is my first video from you and guess what? I'm now binging on all the rest 🥰 so glad I stumbled upon this vid. I'm an Ito fan myself and this is really helpful
I discovered your channel tonight and ive honestly been glued to your catalog of videos for the last 5 hours. You’ve shot immediately to my favorite manga TH-camr, and I’ll be coming to your channel first and foremost for news, reviews, pickups, and ranking videos from now on. Keep up the fantastic work!! PS amazing collection, I have about 400 volumes rn and even that is overwhelming to keep up with, I couldn’t imagine reading a libraries worth. Legend.
As an Ito fan who's read most of his work (including the untranslated short stories), I'll give some advice. If you're new to Ito, without exception, Uzumaki should be your way-in. It's by far, the most well-known of his stories, and it's pretty good. If you're a bit more experienced with Ito, however, going so far as to read Gyo, and the entire Junji Ito collection fan translated; I highly recommend you check out "Black Paradox," which is one of Ito's medium-length stories, which lasts for a few chapters. EDIT: In the Deserter Volume, which will be released this Winter, I believe we will be getting most of the stories from the "Junji Ito Collection: The Bully," which coincidentally features "The Deserter," as well as some of Ito's earliest works. My guess as to the stories in this volume: (For anyone familiar with the Mueseum of Terror Vol 3 Release of Ito, which is currently $1,000s of dollars anywhere online, it will be featuring most the stories in that collection. This is my guess: -The Deserter (Confirmed) -The Bully (High-likelihood) -Heart of a Father (High-likelihood; also my favorite Ito story of all time) -The Will (Based on the line "A pair of girls look alike, but they aren't twins" ; good guess) -Sword of the Reanimator (Good guess) So that's potentially 5/12 of the stories in this Volume Now, let me talk about key differences and stories that belong to The Bully anthology, that won't be included: -Love as Scripted (Already in SHIVER's release) And that's pretty much it Despite having read practically all of his anthologies, this is what is giving me trouble: "A boy's nightmare threatens to spill out into the real world." If anyone has some idea to which story this is referring to, comment it.
omg thank you for this! just earlier i decided to invest in junji ito’s work and was looking for a video with good information & this was at the top of my recommended!!
I currently have Uzumaki, Tomie, Gyo, No Longer Human and newest to my collection, Remina. Thanks for this guide since I'm going to collect every one of his works eventually. Edit: a week later and now I have added Smashed, Shiver and Loveless to the collection!
I discovered Junji Ito manga's about 2 months ago and I first purchased Fragments of Horror. After seeing that Horror Manga's exists (not just manga's like naruto, dragonball, jujutsu kaisen, parasyte etc...) I fell in love and bought all the collections and stand-alone available till now! Can't wait to get the last 3 appearing this year. This is my first time venturing into reading Manga. Usually I would just watch anime's. But I am glad I did. Now I want to have a huge shelf with all the manga's from all my favourite anime as well. MY FAV JUNJI ITO must be Dissolving Clasroom! (Uzumaki not counting it cuz it's a masterpiece of its own)
Im new to the manga game, but yes also became a fan of Junji Ito by the memes of the Enigma of amigara, and Ive seen also drawings of uzumaki but never knew actually where they were from, but Ive been searching and searching for mangas down here in Mexico, and Panini wich is the number one publisher of mangas down here, published the short story collection you showed, and just yesterday I came across Gyo volume 2, they already have said they’re working on publishing Uzumaki, and I just can’t wait to get them for my collection, new suscriber here im really looking forward on seeing maybe more videos of Junji
Thank you for this! I also wanted to make that list! I hope we get the short story 'She's a Slow Walker' in a future book. It is set in the same universe of the 'I Am A Hero' manga series.
I’ve been looking for a guide like this!! The Wikipedia does a terrible job of delivering this information, thank you! I first learned about Junji Ito through a Reddit comment linking to the enigma of amigara fault in imgur. A long time after that I read the Smashed short story. Recently my girlfriend and I decided to start collecting the physical Junji Ito books, and so far we’ve gotten Gyo, Remina, Uzumaki, Smashed and No Longer Human. I’ve only read the first two fully and I’m a little ways into Uzumaki now.
i watched this video right after finishing no longer human a couple months ago, which is my favorite piece of work of all time (the novel and the adaptation). Thank you so much for making such an amazing video about him. At the time of writing this I have read Uzumaki, Gyo, Dissolving Classroom, and Lovesickness and I can definitely say I am a HUGE fan of Ito's work. Keep up the amazing content specially with the stuff you've been doing on TikTok!
I learned of Junji Ito from Horror Show Mickey's YoutTube channel (great narrator!). I bought a few books after listening to his channel. This is great to learn the recent releases!
I am only missing 4; lovesickness, no longer human, cat diary, and dissolving classroom. I also bought his Twisted art book. I highly recommend this one.
My intro to Ito's work was The Enigma of Amigara Fault. About 10 years ago I was up late one night browsing one corner of the internet and came across a dump of the story on some image hosting site. The story was great. It was haunting and gave you this uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach but it was his art that drew me in. I'm not a huge collector but I did collect every one of his stories that I could get my hands on. I even brought back a couple of his japanese only tankobon volumes from when I was stationed in Japan. I'm glad to see him getting all of this love in the west now even from people who don't read manga because the man deserves every bit of it.
Thank you very much for this! I feel so overwhelmed by all the editions and work of Junji Ito there is! I started collecting the hard covers of Uzumaki, Tomie and Gyo, and had no idea about the other three which I sure will get soon! I also collected some of the editions ECC has launched. ECC is in Spanish, but they've got an 18 volume collection of Ito's short stories. Sadly, it's very difficult to find the box set and some of the volumes, because they're super slow with printing. I hope we could get something similar in English, so I can ordered them much easily.
I started with Uzumaki, and haven't looked back. Lovesickness was awesome. I really loved the title story, I highly recommend it. Can't wait for more Ito to come out in the near future!
I love your videos like this! It’s so interesting to hear about all the different things a single mangaka does. I’m not into horror manga personally but this gave me the names of the ito volumes my boyfriend doesn’t have yet :)
This is an extremely meaningful comment to me. I only ever want to help people with the content I provide so to hear(read) this is absolutely amazing. Thank you!
Thanks for this. I'm currently collecting junji ito's books and im not familiar with all of his books that has been translated in English. So thanks to this i am looking forward to purchasing sensor and desserter as they are yet to be released by viz. This was very informative. The 101 to junji ito.
Just ordered the deluxe edition of tomie and gyo. right now im reading shiver ive Finished uzumaki last week it was great. Junji ito is like Stephen king but for manga.
A lot of the shorts are creepy too that aren't yet overseas. My favourite short is "that thing that drifted ashore." I played bloodborne dlc and that short just gets on my skin.
I read Uzumaki in a tent while camping, finished it at night during a pretty intense storm. I'll forever be chasing that feeling while reading horror.
I read it for the first time during chemotherapy. It helped get me through it
Nice profile pic
If you happen to live alone in an apartment or in a more urban setting, I recommend Mieruko-chan.
I love uzumaki with all my heart if u couldn’t tell
The day after I finished Uzumaki there was a tornado in my town. The true horror experience.
Uzumaki was my introduction to Junji Ito and utterly blew me away
Same buddy, I finished it in one go, just couldn't stop once I began lol!
Uzumaki is definitely great. Also i strongly recommend Tomie. That's absolutely one of Junji Ito's best one.

no longer human is a pure masterpiece, I'd say if anything it is the scariest of the Ito works because it shows the horrors of anxiety and social isolation. Showing that the true horror is within our own lives.
Tho It is a novel adaptation but I 100 percent agree it was terrifying
@@bunchagrapes I agree, it really allows Ito to flex his artistic interpretation.

So that's potentially 5/12 of the stories in this Volume
Now, let me talk about key differences and stories that belong to The Bully anthology, that won't be included:
-Love as Scripted (Already in SHIVER's release)
And that's pretty much it
Despite having read practically all of his anthologies, this is what is giving me trouble: "A boy's nightmare threatens to spill out into the real world." If anyone has some idea to which story this is referring to, comment it.
Thank you! This was so comprehensive and I really appreciate it as some one who just got into reading Ito's work and I want more!
Dude, thanks for the summarization of these releases. I didn’t know where to start when it came to his work released in the u.s.a.
omg thank you for this! just earlier i decided to invest in junji ito’s work and was looking for a video with good information & this was at the top of my recommended!!
I currently have Uzumaki, Tomie, Gyo, No Longer Human and newest to my collection, Remina. Thanks for this guide since I'm going to collect every one of his works eventually.
Edit: a week later and now I have added Smashed, Shiver and Loveless to the collection!
Thanks for this. I am just getting into Ito and got Tomie, but I may hold off on reading and look for Uzumaki. :)
I’m hoping we get Black Paradox. Read it online a while back and it’s one of my favs of his I’d love in my collection. Great video man 👍
im pretty sure we're getting it this fall! i cant wait
Would love to see your tier list for Junji Ito books
I already finished Tomie, Gyo, Uzumaki, and one of his Kyoufu Collections. And Im still looking for more
I discovered Junji Ito manga's about 2 months ago and I first purchased Fragments of Horror.
Literally just finished Uzumaki in 1 day, need more
Super helpful guide, I was able to learn about a few of Ito's books that i was missing, thanks a lot, just subscribed💯
Thank you!
This is an amazing compilation of Junji Ito's work.
Thank you for this! I also wanted to make that list! I hope we get the short story 'She's a Slow Walker' in a future book. It is set in the same universe of the 'I Am A Hero' manga series.
This mans manga collection is insane
I'm reading tomie right now I've been reading for about a day and I'm already almost half way through I just ordered Uzumaki, Gyo and Yun and Mu.
The second-hand record has already been released in Shiver. I believe they changed the title to Used Record. Great Video btw.
I read it today and now I need more
Amigara fault is probably my favorite short story of junji ito's, uzumaki probably being my favorite of all time
Uzumaki was my introduction to Junji Ito and I loved it! Mostly the ending. It was so beautifully done and it's very open-ended as well.
I tried looking into this myself and it was so confusing, this is really helpful
There's a bookstore near my job that sells the jp versions of it's work released and unreleased in the US
Just ordered Uzumaki. It’ll be my introduction to Junji Ito so I’m pretty excited
Amazing video as always. Keep doing this excelente work towards the manga “universe”.
I learned of Junji Ito from Horror Show Mickey's YoutTube channel (great narrator!). I bought a few books after listening to his channel. This is great to learn the recent releases!
this is my favorite video ever thank you so much
Really informative video. Just got into his work and enjoying them immensely
Thank you for guiding me, now I understand clearly than ever!
super informative, thank you so much! I'm trying to collect all the junji ito works and this helps. new subscriber
Love the vid. Where’d you get the shirt man? I need it!

Normal person: "Oh, how quaint, a closed wash bin."
Me: * internal panicked screaming *
Dude, just found your channel. Great content and awesome collection. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
I really enjoyed this video. I know you mentioned making one for Hirohiko Araki. I’d love to see one for Osamu Tezuka too.
I am only missing 4; lovesickness, no longer human, cat diary, and dissolving classroom. I also bought his Twisted art book. I highly recommend this one.
Gosh, I hope we get a Black Paradox omnibus soon. That story is sooo good!!
yeah!! it is my favorite one from junji ito :)
Black bird is such an underrated story. Unbelievably unsettling.
What book is it collected in?
@@EarthsGeomancer Fragments of Horror
@@kzkaa. Thank you!
Do a video on Samurai Deeper Kyo please!!!! I see it on your shelf!!!
I'm glad to see him getting all of this love in the west now even from people who don't read manga because the man deserves every bit of it.
enigma of amigara fault was my intro to him too!!
Remina is probably my fav of all his works. Really wish someone would adapt it.
You are undoubtedly my favorite youtuber of all time. Your videos are very informative and definitely help me out when i don't know what to read.
This is an extremely meaningful comment to me. I only ever want to help people with the content I provide so to hear(read) this is absolutely amazing. Thank you!
Not gonna lie Remina is up there as one of my favorite ito stories now
Yes! Love it, gave me exactly the info needed
Couldn't help but praise awesome t-shirt with "the enigma of amigara fault" short story's character ^^
Uzumaki is by far the best junji ito story and the art is absolutely astounding
I'm looking forward to collecting more of Itos work! Thank you for making this! ^_^
A lot of the shorts are creepy too that aren't yet overseas. My favourite short is "that thing that drifted ashore." I played bloodborne dlc and that short just gets on my skin.
Uzumaki is a masterpiece. Followed closely by no longer human. But I do love the vast majority of his work.that I’ve seen anyway
U really love these kind of video. Keep it up!
