No, he left it hit the Rev limiter for a full second in 1st gear. With a car like that, skip 1st, slip into 2nd, sacrifice some clutch for a easy .7 +of a second on the run. That's what you did to win with a manual in my day. Also, he over heated the tires, then had to wait too long for the Porsche to stage up. Burnouts go right before launching to be most effective.

When you know your transmission and the perfect timing to shift at the maximum rpm you can beat anyone. I had a Honda Accord 1979 in 1996 with manual 4 cylinder. I was able to destroyed any driver that tried. I was a delivery for food, and at 18 y old you don't have blood in your veins but gasoil.The second gear push this little Honda to 90km/h like a magic trick. I miss this old time.I still have dream sometime about this car.

And in turbocharged cars it actually has a whole lot to do with it because it keeps the engine at full boost in between gears for maximum possible acceleration. I agree it's still bad for the gearbox, especially if it's stock.
