@0:01 I am here and back to give some nightmares at @UsefulCharts once again. He better have made a detailled map of Obama's patrilineal lineage. Edit (yeah, so soon!) : @1:56 the name of this body of water is now (and has always been) officially *Lake Nyanza (or Nyanza)* . Not *Victoria.* We are not great fans of colonial names in most African countries. Second Edit: @2:28 Not forcibky an erroneum, but Baraka rathers refers to its Swahili meaning (which is exactly the same in Arabic) . Obama is a princely Luo surname - as Luo people dwelling east of Nyanza doesn't have a monarchical system of kinglets and united kingdoms, but rather of Principalities and High Chieftainships. Well, I disgress-- - which means "Fiery Celestial Javelin" and holds homonymous kinship to various Central African royals from the Great Lakes region/Central Northeast Africa and the Congo basin, such as the Ilunga/Olenga Dynasty sho reigned over the Kingdom of Anzicana and some of his fiefdoms from early 14th century AD to its dissolution by colonial European powers around 1885-1891; and many others via intermarriages between Nilotic headships and other royals in Middle African, as well as a common royal BaChwezi heritage between Obama's patrilineal lineage and various Central African royalties dating back to the Chwezi Dynasty of the Kitara Empire (c. 630 AD - early 14th century AD) . Thus, Baraka Obama roughly means _"Holy Fiery Javelin Descending From Heaven"_ , a very powerful naming laden with ancestral mystical significance in Africa. At last, I see that you've stopped the genealogical tree of Obama's paternal line to his grandparents. Bery dissapointing. We can literally trace Obama's patrilineal ancestry back to his 8th great-grandfather 16th century Nyanza Acholi princeling and warlord Owinyi Rac Koma / Owinyi Ramogi of the Nyanza region (c. 1544 - c.1571) ; foremost founding headship of the Kenyan Luos east of Nyanza, son of Sigoma, son of Rukidi Rugwe/Mwiru & Princess Nyatooro, daughter of Princr Nyabongo, descendant of the princeling Olimi I of the Banyoro-Kitara, descendant of Rukidi I / Labongo who founded in 14th century the petty mixed Luo/Acholi/Chollo-and-Chwezi-descended kingdom of Banyoro-Kitara (14th century-late 19th century) which succeeded to the fallen Kitara Empire after overthrowing their Chwezi/Hima overlords. Obama's paternal heritage is very ancient and renowmed in Africa: we can trace his paternal origins not just to the Kenyan plains and hill-lands east of the Nyanza Lake, but also to the Kitara region, eastern DRC, the Nilotes of South Sudan and the Nuba Mountains, the Nobataes of Roman antiquity, the triumvirate of Christian Nubian kingdoms in present-day Sudan, ancient Kush, the Aksumite Kingdom/Abyssinia via the Jewish (later Christian) Aksumite kings of Adulis and Aksum in late 3rd century AD and 9th century AD Pagan-Jewish Empress Gudit alike (after their nation conquerred the Great Lakes region and East Africa twice over the 1st Millenium AD) , the Ethiopian Macrobian overrulers of the Azanian Empire in Hellenistic then Roman Antiquity, the Bagratidae Dynasty of 9th century Georgia and the South Caucasus region (via a second marriage between Gudit and a foreign "Syrian" or Georgian Christian prince) , Near Eastern royals of Antiquity and the early Middle Ages (including the Davidic Exilarchate) , the Hellenistic kingdoms, ancient Rome, ancient Numidia; and at last but not to say the least Pharaonic Egypt (thrice, via both his distant Upper Nile Chollo, Chwezi and Abyssinian-Bagratid heritage) , and moreso Puntite royalty dating back to the legendary tribal Anu Dynasty (Imanujela or Ba-Tembuzi Dynasty for others) of African prehistory, whom the latter legendary Anu-domineered House of Keb/Geb (fabled dynastic tribe whom the God Osiris and his brethren belonged to, in Egyptian mythology) was spawned forth.
You forgot Obama’s mother’s Dutch ancestry, with the line that goes through Djirksie Meyer and Enoch M Vreeland. My line also goes through the above two individuals, but that’s where it splits, as I’m a descendant of Enoch Vreeland and then his daughter, Eve, or Effie, or Effje. They had several children, Maria, who died as a small child, William, my ancestor, dying in the revolution, Cornelius Maxwell, a messenger to Congress and married Ruth Dunn, Enoch Maxwell, who served in the NY Militia, his likely twin sister, Mary Van Horn Maxwell, and Anthony Maxwell who served in Malcolm’s regiment and likely was part of the Battle of Trenton and Married eve Platner, and Eve Maxwell, who married into the Cronin family. William had a young son around the time the revolution broke out named Joseph. Then Joseph had a son named Anthony who may have been an explorer in and around the time of Andrew Jackson’s presidency. He possibly explored Glacier National park. His son, Joseph competed in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show against Annie Oakley. His son William, worked on the railroad, and his son Robert, served in WAII.
Every president has that one family member or in-law that makes a public embarrassment of themselves during their administration. Jimmy Carter had his brother, Billy. Bill Clinton had his two brothers-in-law. Barak Obama has Malik. Although, Malik didn't take off until later.
The name “Barack” comes from the Arabic name “Mubarak”, which is cognate to the Hebrew name “Baruch”. All of the names translate to “blessed”. Both names are also cognate to the Latin name “Benedictus”, commonly shortened to “Benedict”. So technically, Barack Obama, Baruch Spinoza, and Benedict Cumberbatch all have first names meaning the same thing.
I don't think "barack" and "baruch" are related to benedict although they're related to each other). Benedict comes from the Latin "bene" (well) and "dictus" (said or spoken), which also means "blessed" but its minor similarity to the two related Semitic words (baruch and barack) is a coincidence.
I'm Kenyan and I come from the tribe of Obama senior ( obama's dad) called Luo, Obama is a luo name. In our Luo tribe, ladies' names start with letter A( you can see from my second name, Akinyi) and Men's name starts with the letter O. The names have meanings depending on the time, place, and the event that took place at the time of your birth. 😊
The idea that Stanley Ann Dunham was pregnant by a Kenyan was a lie and the truth is that a married friend of her parents was the father of her unborn son. He was 54 years old and a notorious Communist named Frank Marshall Davis. He served as his son's mentor after Ann and Barry Soetoro returned to Hawaii from Indonesia.
That is a really cool fact! I love the individuality of knowing that no one else is going to have the exact same name, due to the circumstance of time, place and events of a baby's birth! It's beautiful! I think we need more of this in the world!
i do thank you for the vindication; i clearly remember back around 2011 when President Obama made a state visit to Ireland i mentioned to some coworkers, he indeed visited his ancestorial village and everyone thought i was an idiot, soon after i realize they did not know he was bi-racial something i assumed everyone knew

I’ve just recently stumbled onto this channel and now I’m binging on the videos. We’re currently untangling our own family’s tree branches. We’ve uncovered some interesting stuff. We are descendants of Daniel Boone but we’re originally from Scotland. These charts here are fascinating.
welcome to the Useful Charts fan club :) , Matt and crew are very good at what they do. This is one of the channels that kept me occupied during the pandemic.
On my mother's side, we are descendants of his wife Rebecca's sister...not sure if it was her sister Martha, or when her father married a second time, if he had children with his second wife. If it was with her sister Martha, then we would be some form of cousins, if so...hello cousin!
It looks like in Kenya some people took their fathers first name as a last name so yeah thats where Obama comes from - like my last name, Johnson (apparently I had an ancestor named John sometime in the 16th century.)
I believe in 2012, Ancestry did a report on Barack Obama’s ancestry focusing on his mother family. It was about 50 pages long and included information about his mother likely having an ancestor named John Punch. They also included that a male relative of his mother with the last name Bunch had done a DNA test that confirmed the relative’s Y-chromosome was of West African origin and matched close enough to descendants of John Punch to suggest a strong likelihood of shared ancestry in the direct male line. John Punch was an enslaved man in Colonial Virginia who married a white woman prior to the passage of an “anti-miscegenation” law in the 1660s and they had children who took their legal status from their mother (partus sequitur ventrem) making them free people of color. Their children also became slave holders themselves and had interracial marriages. Today a large number of their descendants are white and many probably aren’t aware of their African ancestry. While it isn’t 100% certain, it is noteworthy that his white mother is very likely a descendant of an enslaved African man and had been described as the first official enslaved African slave in the 13 colonies, at least that can be documented in official legal documents.
I was surprised that that connection was not mentioned in the video. I also am allegedly descended from tne same enslaved man. Unfortunately, I have no proof beyond internet geneaology sites.
I was surprised it wasn’t mentioned as well but I understand why it wouldn’t be on the chart if it hasn’t been proven through documentation. I am a male line descendant of John Punch. It’s an interesting bit of history that illustrates how the colonial history of America wasn’t as cut and dry as we are taught. People make history and people are complex and multidimensional.
How Obama senior landed in the USA is interesting His Cousin (died last week and will be buried ⚰ next Friday 23/12/2022) had the scholarship handed over to him by the missionaries. The mother of the cousin was ill and she didn't want the son to go to the USA When Obama senior learnt that his cousin has declined to go to the US.. He approached him if he can give him his chance The Cousin took him to the missionaries and pleaded with them to allow Obama senior take his chance That's how Obama senior got the ticket 🎫 to USA 🇺🇸 The cousin will be buried in Seme Ratta Village in Kenya next Friday.
I saw Barrack Obama say he was born in Kenya and I saw a picture of his Hawaiian birth certificate. The problem is, the hospital named on his Hawaiian birth certificate was not built until,2 years AFTER Barrack was born! Therefore he was an ILLEGITIMATE president!
I’m related to Obama on both sides of my family: The Punch/Bunch line on my dad’s side and the Browning line on my mom’s side. We are 9th and 10th cousins.
@@sorangjung8140 some people get very excited about finding a famous relative and will talk about it for years. Where I live many are related to someone from the famous Hatfield-McCoy Feud and we have a few people that can’t pass up the opportunity to tell everyone.
You only discussed Ann's father's side of her family. Her mother had more than just English ancestry. Her ancestors were diverse: English, Irish, Scottish, German, French and some other European groups I may not be aware of. She was a descendant of an African(s) who were enslaved in the US. Further the family also has trace or very small amounts of Indigenous American from what is now a likely extinct tribe from the Eastern US. Her ancestors also would have had some Jewish and or Arabic ancestry. Ann was my 4th cousin which would have made former President Obana my 5th cousin. His African family is not the only ones to have experienced poverty. His American cousins on his mom's side also experienced it here in the US including a few who were actually homeless. Such is life.
Here’s a good suggestion: “Who’s the best claim to become Emperor of Mexico”. There could be a case for Moctezuma’s descendants, one of the Hasbourgs, or a relative of Iturbide.
My gramma did our family tree lineage about 20 years ago when it was much harder to find answers. We've got traced back as far as 800 AD (yes you read that correctly, 800), and then she decided that was enough. This video was fascinating to me. Thanks!!
Where are you from ? Precisely … because it is very doubtful she can go back so far, even in Europe, except for royalty. No offense but sounds like family legend.
@@sebastienh1100 Well seeing as I have printouts of the information she has found it isn't exactly "family legend" and I will tell you I am from Canada, myself, but my full, extended family is on every continent on Earth, minus Antarctica.
@@bladesausteel - I don’t understand what you are trying to say. My simple question is, when you say you go back to 800 AD, in which country is it? I suppose if you are from Canada it must be in Europe - which country and region in Europe? If you cannot answer that, it is a problem.
@@sebastienh1100 I'm sorry, I interpreted your question as "where am I myself from." My gramma has found people throughout what is now England and Scotland, and there are even relatives from France. The name Barack originates from swahili, which is one of the most spoken languages in Kenya 🇰🇪 . In the swahili language, the name is " Baracka " which means Benediction .
It's so painful to know that between the years of 1500 and 1850 many of us AAs do not know who the people are. We even know what tribes we descend from but we just don't know how.
"I didn’t really know my father-he left my mother and me when I was two years old, and only traveled from Kenya to visit us once, when I was ten. That trip was the first and last I saw of him; after that, I heard from him only through the occasional letter, written on thin blue airmail paper that was preprinted to fold and address without an envelope. His short visit had a profound impact on my life. My father gave me my first basketball and introduced me to jazz. But for the most part, the visit left me with more questions than it answered, and I knew I would have to figure out how to be a man on my own." Then he is lecturing blacks on how to vote ? Joseph Smith Jr. is not the head anymore. He died in 1844. I went to a business conference in Nairobi in 2015, just prior to a visit there by President Obama. There were billboards and the local news, etc., discussing how they were going to welcome Obama "home" for a visit. So, I was in a cab one day during my stay there, and I began to relate how my family had some Dunham relations and Obama could very well be related to me (just conjecture on my part). Now, this Kenyan cab driver is looking at me, a very white American dude, who is telling him about possibly being related to Obama. The cognitive dissonance just slowly erased his grin from one side of his face to the other. He was, shall we say, confused.

Barack is also from the Swahili word "baraka" which means blessings. Swahili is Kenya's native language and it makes sense that Obama Sr. derived the name from his local dialect. Worth noting is that Swahili evolved from Arabic and in fact, many words are shared between the two languages. Examples: Salam aleikum (Swahili), salaam a’leikum (Arabic), Karibu (Swahili) and qareeb (Arabic), Salama (Swahili), Salaam (Arabic), halali (Swahili), halaal (Arabic), hasara (Swahili), khasaarah (Arabic), etc. So there's debate whether Barack came from the Swahili local dialect spoken by his father or Arabic since he had converted to Islam or both
Swahili did not evolve from Arabic, it is a Bantu language that borrowed words from Arabic. Also while Swahili is now spoken throughout the county today as a lingua Franca, it is only natively spoken by the people of the east costal regions, the opposite end of the country from where Obama’s family is from.
@@thomaspatterson1789 Obama's family is from the western side of the country around lake victoria. They are river-lake nilotes. The Luo tribe. Also, although linguistically categorised as a Bantu language, Swahili developed historically by borrowing a number of words from foreign languages, particularly Arabic. That's why I said it evolved from Arabic. Maybe I should have used a different word, but English is not my first language. Swahili is. Per Wikipedia, around 40% of the Swahili vocabulary consists of Arabic loanwords, including the name of the language itself (سَوَاحِلي sawāḥilī) meaning 'of the coast'. Swahili is predominantly spoken in Kenya and Tanzania and is no longer native ONLY to the coastal region or bantu communities. Many speakers esp those in urban areas speak Swahili as their mother-tongue. Kenya and Tanzania national anthems are in Swahili. I grew up speaking the language myself and am not a bantu or from the coast but it is my native/first language.
But you said Swahili comes from Arabic which is simply not true. It's like I say that English comes from french just because English borrowed many words from french. And I do not believe Swahili is 40% Arabic. That's a bit of a stretch
That family tree is a mess. Couldn't wrap my head around Sr having 2 more children with Kezia after moving back to Kenya with Ruth. I saw a meme many years ago that there's a memorial in South Carolina to a female slave that was an ancestor of Michelle, but I can't remember the name.

She was around, but she doesn't live in DC. She lived in Hawaii with her husband and kids. How and why would she be hanging out in DC? When the Obamas went to Hawaii each year for their family vacations they would spend time with his sister and her family.
Let’s be honest. It probably wouldn’t matter what side his family was on, but if the media suspected that he wasn’t close to his family then negative press releases would be constant. That is not okay if it is over absolutely nothing. Family business should stay Family business regardless if it is a Democrat or a Republican politician.

@UsefulCharts, somewhere a while back, I got confused with Obama's maternal patrilineal line. I read somewhere his mom's surname would have been Bunch, which originally was Punch, via a freed or escaped African slave who married White, whose descendants also did so, leading to today, where there are thousands of Bunches who have an African Y haplogroup, but who are otherwise almost or are entirely European genetically. How did this story come into the story of Obama's maternal grandfather's line? I assume your scholarship is better than whoever shared that story. Obviously none of this matters in any real sense of things that racists would care about. As a genealogist, I just find stories of blending fascinating.

Wow this just openend my mind.
This is the kind of funfact I read the comments for! 😁
I don't think "barack" and "baruch" are related to benedict although they're related to each other). Benedict comes from the Latin "bene" (well) and "dictus" (said or spoken), which also means "blessed" but its minor similarity to the two related Semitic words (baruch and barack) is a coincidence.
So we had a president that had the name Benedict.

I was surprised also. I am a descendent of the bunch family and thought that would be mentioned .
I found a link to John Punch as well. I thought it was so interesting.
I'm related to this line as well. I came here to see if this was in the comments yet.

How did people not know Obama is his the surname and Barack is his forename?
Obama’s last name is “care” everyone knows

Punch/Bunch is on Obama's maternal grandmother's side
I just watch a video on the man that did the search on that. With bunch being punch. He did say he’s just assuming and it’s not proven. It was a video on I think abc if you’d like to search it
I come here after watching Judge Joe Brown at PBD podcast. If you are as well, pls like this comment.
I was hoping you'd go back to Sir Thomas Offley from the 1500s, who is a direct Ancestor of Both Obama and Margaret Thatcher
Which Thomas? William fathered two sons named Thomas, one by each wife, both named Elizabeth. Glad to see another person that dabbles in genealogy.
Obama Sr must have been an intelligent, charming person
Oddly I am distantly related to Obama through his Dunham side but both he and I are considered African Americans. I am related through his mother’s paternal side his 8 th cousin. His mother’s paternal side is full of presidents. It’s true🤔 most presidents are related. I am related to 4 presidents through our shared paternal ancestry!

Where did Frank Marshall Davis come from? Can you do his genealogy chart?
By the way, what is the script you used for the native spelling of "Obama"? Which language(s) is it used for?
It's the Luo script used to write the Dholuo language. It's the script used by the tribes around Lake Victoria (where the Obamas originate).
@@UsefulCharts well, I think it's cool that you give credits to one of those many emerging (and promising) african scripts. There was a moment when I was fascinated by that topic.
Why is there no mention of MICHAEL Robinson anywhere here ....Asking for a friend.... 😏
What an interesting story, as usual, well done :-)
Obama’s half brother Mark is cute lol
You should do a video about the many famous connections of Zachary Taylor
Can you make a video about the most senior member of king David?
Obama Sr. seems like a very "responsible" man...
Yeah, he would get drunk and drive around in nations and get into wrecks. Kills someone in one, and lost a leg in another.
the apple didn't fall from the tree either.
