Nancy King-Hoffman if they can’t take care of their babies, they’re not gonna risk their own health to do so. if they can’t find food in nature to feed themselves and their babies with, then why keep the babies? that just risks the mother dying. many animals do that. pandas eat their cubs, hamsters eat their babies, many birds will snap the necks of their smallest chick if they end up having more than 2-3 of them. it’s nature, and it’s for survival.

One of my tetras gave birth a few months ago. I didn't even know she was pregnant, nor did I see any eggs. Just happened upon a baby one day, two others appeared when they were large enough to not be eaten. They've tripled in size since I first saw them.

Its common in the animal kingdom,
Females do it for: nutrients, too much babies, hunger, getting rid of already dead babies.
Males do it for: so they can mate again.

Awww man thank you that was so interesting and cool. I’m also happy you put her in the other tank to have them because that one fish knew what was happening it was following right where the baby’s would have came out. Also you said you put her back in the other tank because she would eat the baby’s? Correct me if I misunderstood.

The other fish knew she was ready to give birth at any moment and were in position behind her to eat her babies as soon as they come out. Notice how she and the babies dart in opposite directions right after each birth to give the baby a chance of escape.
