You would have thought Transformers One would have been released in the summer because kids are out of school in the summer. Also there weren't any major animated releases since Despicable Me 4.
At the same time, there is very little competition during this time of the year for animated features, so I think it was a better gamble here than risk putting it out in a summer where you know it's just gonna get swept up by a Despicable Me audience.
I agree. This seems very much a summer movie. I have two kids in the age range for this movie but I completely forgot about it coming out since we've started doing fall stuff on the weekends. The marketing was also terrible and if not for the fact that I keep up with entertainment news and thus saw all the great reviews, I wouldn't be interested in seeing it.
Last yr's animated TMNT: Mutant Mayhem had a similar $28m domestic opening. Beetlejuice like Ghostbusters seems like a franchise that just plays a lot stronger domestically than abroad. Well done Rebel Ridge on being able to build on its strong WK 1 numbers on Netflix!
Transformers One should be a lesson to everyone that even when you release a great film that’s well received it’s not always gonna do well at the box office. Even with it taking the franchise back to the roots and formula of what made it work back in the old days I guess they just didn’t market it well enough to an audience that could consume it in droves. I think the release date also was not smart for the film given its target audience is all back in school right now.😅

This is the killer I think.. The Wild Robot looks awesome and people are actually wanting to go see it. Plus, this isn't the summer, I feel like Transformers should have come out in August or something

We finally made it to Beetle-Juice 2 on Sat. I thought that everyone would be at Transformers, but our matinee was packed. *Loved it, a solid B. **I get anxiety in crowds & would have left a 1/2 full theatre, except we were taking my brother out to a movie, so I couldn't wimp out.
Loved the marketing for The Substance.. the trailer made very good use of film footage without giving away the whole plot or major spoilers.. kudos to them!
Remember when a franchise would bomb and movie studios would wait around 10 years before trying again? Maybe they should bring that back. Accept that a big part of making money is getting viewers to start missing a franchise.
While this is the answer, shareholders who operate under the logic of 'we must turn a profit every quarter forever' will never allow this. So this is why studios don't do that.
I didn’t watch transformers one this weekend because my kids didn’t do my their schoolwork but we will watch it soon for sure, all reviewers are saying it’s a great movie so I hope it legs out.
The telltale sign for me was when Paramount had a promo giving away Keanu Reeves autographed Shadow the Hedgehog posters for Transformers One viewers. Using Sonic 3’s stronger marketing to push ticket sales shows how much investment the studio has for Transformers One’s marketing in itself.
I think a fair comp for the Transformers animated film is Clone Wars. A traditionally live action franchise (at least film wise) jumping to animation that failed to come near the series’ normal performance. It just doesn’t appeal to the core audience, although it might do well in the long run if it catches on with home viewing. I expect the animated LotR film to perform just as poorly, even if they do seem to be targeting an older audience.
oh I love "A Discovery of Witches" - it's hilarious! it has all the ingredients of a 'serious' series with great actors, nice cinematography, interesting settings and a good score - but then all those elements conspire over the most silly of lines and immature plot. it's truly a completely unintentionally funny watch.

Transformers 1 was great. I hope it does well. The relationship of Optimus and Megatron was handled brilliantly. It's a shame the franchise has suffered for so long because this is far and away the best one, ever. Bumblebee was like a 8 out of 10. This was a solid 9 maybe even 9.5. Everything made sense and was just good storytelling, loved it. I also loved Super / Man. I hope that gets a wider release.
The movie was great, i think the trailers didn’t create any hype. After seeing the trailers i had zero interest in seeing the movie, i only went because my brother wanted to see it for his birthday. I expected it to be a generic movie based of the trailers but i was pleasantly surprised, i really enjoyed it.
I'm surprised that Super/Man is nowhere to be seen. It had limited screening in my locale, but those few shows were full for the Christopher Reeve doc!
The style of animation chosen for a movie matters. A lot. Transformers did not choose wisely imho. Which is a shame, because otherwise it is a good movie

"Howl's Moving Castle" is easily one of my all time favorite movies, I've seen it many, many times and the art remains stunning. because I love the movie so much I've also read the book it's based on, but the book is surprisingly different. could easily be two entirely different stories, just sharing the most basic plot points.
Man, Aubrey Plaza is dominating this September, the Agatha show first released last week, and now for this week, she's gonna be in Megalopolis and My Old Ass, nice to see she's getting more work

I've seen The Substance on Saturday 21st *Do You Remember * and I absolutely really love it is really gory shocking and outrageously hilarious and nobody including myself didn't vomit but it was laughs of body horror comedy.
I think Dan's probably on to something about the data being incorrect and needing to cross reference against other data sets for validation. More times than not, incorrect data is mostly an incompetence issue more so than someone deliberately altering the data to serve some unknown purpose
I need the people who propped up Longlegs to give the same attention to The Substance. I hope word of mouth reflects its Letterboxd and IMDb scores to hopefully give that movie strong legs at the box office
With Deadpool & Wolverine’s $1.3B success, Disney and Marvel Studios need to do more select R-rated films in the MCU. Blade is said to be next. But Thunderbolts* should really be next, in order to do Sentry justice, even when he becomes the Void.
I do think that D&W's success does come with a bit of an asterisk. Disney needed to bring back Hugh Jackman as wolverine, and do a whole multiverse adventure with a bunch of fox/fancast cameos to find this success.

I feel bad for Chris Hemsworth. Now he has two box office disappointments despite both movies are very good: Furiosa and now, Transformers One. Just because a movie underperforms at the box office despite solid reviews doesn’t mean that it’s going to find new life on home media and end up getting a cult following. I love Transformers One, I think it’s one of the best animated films of the year (so far) and I agree that the franchise had lost steam in recent years, but if it wasn’t for the success of the Michael Bay films despite its not everyone’s cup of tea, it shows that it’s still a billion-dollar franchise over the last two decades and yes, I defended Revenge of the Fallen, 15 years later as one of the underrated film in the series. I’m sure hope One will find an audience on streaming.
Transformers did everything wrong with his marketing campaign, here in Latin America they changed the voices of the protagonist and insisted on hiring a singer and a content creator accused of inappropriate behavior with minors, a lot of fans voiced their disappointment, but Paramount didn't wanna listen. As a fan I'm not supporting a company that doesn't wanna hear me out.
TF looks like a Netflix movie. Theres so much TF for kids that I dont think kids are remotely excited for this. the TF audience are the 40 yr olds who grew up on it. The movie should have focused on telling the definitive back story of Cybertron in a more mature manner, not a kids movie. Yet a movie that kids could watch.
The Transformers films are baffling. A lot of the best ones (this one included) didn't make much money, and many of the worst ones made a metric ton of it.
I got no sympathy for Lionsgate. They bought the right to Kushiel's Dart and just sat on it without doing anything with it. Though given the hit and miss of adaptions from fantasy, maybe I should thank them
I would'nt write off Transformers one just yet it's got an A cinemascore and that should help it alot. Hell the only reason I have'nt watched it is because I like taking my family to a first viewing of a movie and none of them are big transformers fans. So I've been focusing on the Wild Robot which might be the case for alot of other people. I do want to see Transformers movie.
Seems to be barely anything out there about this film, I k=ony know about it as I pay attention. I also wonder if Transformers One not being release to a lot of markets until the end of October also being a reason. With it not being out in markets like UK etc, there is less talk about it. Still, Transformers sell toys and just like TMNT Mutant Mayhem, it'll get a sequel purely on merchandise selling alone.

Speaking strictly for myself, I would get a membership or provide financial support (if available) if the content of the videos had more longevity. As of right now, most of the videos have a shelf life of about a week. Literally, last week's Charts is already irrelevant, which means Dan would have to upload often just to make the financial expense worth it (for me), or create videos that have more replay value... Like, I keep my Netflix subscription, not because I'm looking forward to anything new, but for the value of rewatching 'Breaking Bad', 'Seinfeld', 'Monk', 'Justice League Unlimited'... That's just my two cents 🤷🏾♂️
It's literally less money than a coffee, which takes like 10 minutes to enjoy. This video alone is 40 minutes. And constantly changing information requires more active work. You have somehow put more value on less work.

For transformers, the issue for me was the animation style. It looked like cheap 90s blocky CGI. Not a good look in modern times. But I'm sure the story is good.
Transformers One looks good. I just am very off-put by the clay-like faces. It's a very off-budget style that doesn't make me want to see it in theatres.
I loved this movie and even though I wasn't excited about seeing it. There are a few reasons why I think its tanking: First of all, the animation is stale. Every Nick Jr (and the like) TV show has a similar look which I feel "cheapens" the project. Second, the marketing was scatterbrained. Kids or Gen X....who was the audience? And why didnt they make a choice? Voice Cast: At this point, teens and possible younger audiencea dont know who Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson or Steve Buscemi (that was a choice) is any longer. Im sure I will think of more reasons after I post this but it doesnt change the fact that its a good watch on the big screen.

What TMNT had going for it was that it released in the Summer, so students could go see it in future weeks even if it didn’t take a great opening

I feel bad for Chris Hemsworth. Now he has two box office disappointments despite both movies are very good: Furiosa and now, Transformers One. Just because a movie underperforms at the box office despite solid reviews doesn’t mean that it’s going to find new life on home media and end up getting a cult following. I love Transformers One, I think it’s one of the best animated films of the year (so far) and I agree that the franchise had lost steam in recent years, but if it wasn’t for the success of the Michael Bay films despite its not everyone’s cup of tea, it shows that it’s still a billion-dollar franchise over the last two decades and yes, I defended Revenge of the Fallen, 15 years later as one of the underrated film in the series. I’m sure hope One will find an audience on streaming.

Transformers did everything wrong with his marketing campaign, here in Latin America they changed the voices of the protagonist and insisted on hiring a singer and a content creator accused of inappropriate behavior with minors, a lot of fans voiced their disappointment, but Paramount didn't wanna listen. As a fan I'm not supporting a company that doesn't wanna hear me out.

You know Transformers is not as fun as it was when Shia LaBeouf played Sam Witwicky.
TF looks like a Netflix movie. Theres so much TF for kids that I dont think kids are remotely excited for this. the TF audience are the 40 yr olds who grew up on it. The movie should have focused on telling the definitive back story of Cybertron in a more mature manner, not a kids movie. Yet a movie that kids could watch.
marketing screwed up with that first Transformers trailer. Too bad. Way better than the live action (not Bumblebee). Hopefully word of mouth will help
The Transformers films are baffling. A lot of the best ones (this one included) didn't make much money, and many of the worst ones made a metric ton of it.
I got no sympathy for Lionsgate. They bought the right to Kushiel's Dart and just sat on it without doing anything with it. Though given the hit and miss of adaptions from fantasy, maybe I should thank them
I would'nt write off Transformers one just yet it's got an A cinemascore and that should help it alot. Hell the only reason I have'nt watched it is because I like taking my family to a first viewing of a movie and none of them are big transformers fans. So I've been focusing on the Wild Robot which might be the case for alot of other people. I do want to see Transformers movie.
Seems to be barely anything out there about this film, I k=ony know about it as I pay attention. I also wonder if Transformers One not being release to a lot of markets until the end of October also being a reason. With it not being out in markets like UK etc, there is less talk about it. Still, Transformers sell toys and just like TMNT Mutant Mayhem, it'll get a sequel purely on merchandise selling alone.

That first trailer was awful for transformers one it immediately turned me off the movie cause I felt like it was gonna be too much for kids now that I saw all the reviews I’ll try and go watch it but tbh if a movie doesn’t get me excited to go watch it opening week it’s really tough for me to go and watch it as work week takes a toll on me and then weekends I just was rest up, also transformers 3 is an incredible action movie not gonna let Dan slander that movie like that

WHO was this movie for? I dont think most Teens and Kids care about Transformers. Were they hoping for the Dwindling adult audience of the Live action films? This just seemed like a odd Idea
Not surprised with that terrible trailer. Heard the movie itself is surprisingly decent though. Revenge of the Fallen killed the franchise for me, and I was an 80s fanboy.

I didn’t see a point to seeing Transformers. The trailer showed a similar story line one of the animated shows did a few years ago.
The first trailer for Transformers One wasn’t good. I think anted to see the movie regardless but I had a hard time getting someone else to go see it

Speaking strictly for myself, I would get a membership or provide financial support (if available) if the content of the videos had more longevity.
As of right now, most of the videos have a shelf life of about a week. Literally, last week's Charts is already irrelevant, which means Dan would have to upload often just to make the financial expense worth it (for me), or create videos that have more replay value...
Like, I keep my Netflix subscription, not because I'm looking forward to anything new, but for the value of rewatching 'Breaking Bad', 'Seinfeld', 'Monk', 'Justice League Unlimited'...

It's literally less money than a coffee, which takes like 10 minutes to enjoy. This video alone is 40 minutes. And constantly changing information requires more active work. You have somehow put more value on less work.
@@punxsydawn That's because I am not his employer and he's not my employee. If I were his employer, then I would be concerned about paying for his work. I am a consumer, which means I pay for the product - what I consume, how I consume it, and how often I consume it. To your point, I don't buy coffee, either.
For transformers, the issue for me was the animation style. It looked like cheap 90s blocky CGI. Not a good look in modern times. But I'm sure the story is good.

Transformers One looks good. I just am very off-put by the clay-like faces. It's a very off-budget style that doesn't make me want to see it in theatres.
I loved this movie and even though I wasn't excited about seeing it.
There are a few reasons why I think its tanking:
First of all, the animation is stale. Every Nick Jr (and the like) TV show has a similar look which I feel "cheapens" the project.
Second, the marketing was scatterbrained. Kids or Gen X....who was the audience? And why didnt they make a choice?
Voice Cast: At this point, teens and possible younger audiencea dont know who Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson or Steve Buscemi (that was a choice) is any longer.
Im sure I will think of more reasons after I post this but it doesnt change the fact that its a good watch on the big screen.
It’s also the movie with the lowest budget
