From the Legends of Duskmourn article by Emily Teng: "Norin is the first to tell anyone who will listen that he isn't meant to be here. Alive during the time of Dominaria's temporal crisis, he was caught up in a time rift and wandered in it for what felt like three days, at least to him. He finally managed to find his way out onto a Dominaria of the future … only to stumble straight through an open door and find himself on Duskmourn. His ultimate goal is to find a way out and back home. In the meantime, a keen sense of self-preservation and a strong nose for danger has kept him alive … so far."
Given how Norin had incredibly sparse lore to begin with, I'm fine with that. He's always just been kind of a silly background character, and his first card appearance WAS during Time Spiral, long after he should be dead, because time fuckery was afoot.
God, it's such a perfect fit for the house. Just that unkillable cockroach of a person making the House angrier and angrier, like an anxiety-riddled Roadrunner.
What that doesn't mention is that he was only around during Time Spiral because he arrived their also through a time rift from The Dark. He was a character first mentioned in flavor text in The Dark.
I see that the land station in the background of the set has what looks to be the full art basics from Duskmourn in it, and now I'm wondering if that is always updating with new set releases. I've never noticed before and figured it was a more static prop.
I think they recently changed out the art station to be all full arts, though I'm not sure exactly how far back that was. It comes up occasionally for FNPF drafts.
6:42 It was said by someone on the team that Norin disappeared in a time rift at the end of TSP block. He apparently was shoved this far into the future.
Nemesis can't target itself. You need: 1) another nemesis 2) giving a gift with dawn's truce (to give your stuff indestructible) 3) pyroclasm (or a way to deal damage to any nemesis) and 4) a way to give lifelink for infinite life. Or you could just use Monstrous Emergence to dome your opponent with 18 with Yargle and Multani
Questing Druid is also great in that otter combo deck. You can grab it with your Cache grab, Say it's name, and Analyze the Pollen, but it has an Adventure side that's an instant to impulse draw you for 2 so you can keep your combo going.
6:45 the other benefit with Norin is with the Manifested creatures. Exile a manifested creature with Norin allows you to play the front side of the card
Time Spiral was only about 60 years ago. It's when the Mending happened, so it's why Jaya was an old lady when we first returned to Dominaria, because she had remained young until the Mending until she started aging again like a normal human. Norin in Wary in Time Spiral got there because of a time rift, since he's also named in flavor text from The Dark. Apparently he went through a time rift again that flung him into the future 60+ years.
Surveil before you Manifest Dread with the Underwater Tunnel lets you ensure the Manifest you get is something you want, like a creature that can be flipped up rather than if you just Manifest Dread and the top two cards were a land and a spell you wanted to cast.
The screaming nemesis infinite combo can be done using just one card: Take up the Shield gives both lifelink and indestructible! Also, revealing Yargle and Multani to Monstrous Emergence lets you dome your opponent for 18, as well!
19:00 I had exactly one playable rare in my prerelease pool and this thing won me games I had no business winning. I also had the 1 mana sac an enchantment card AND two bounce spells to reset it if the demon died.
Unlike Mana Value, which is an equally specific term with fewer syllables, 'enters' will never be clear on its own, in a game with multiple zones that can be entered or exited. Either they reverse course on this decision in 3 years, or the players will simply ignore it.
I don't think it's a big problem because battefield is the default main zone in MTG. Also, in MTG's very long history there were no triggers named "enters exile" or "enters hand" or something like that.
@@joeferreti9442 Oh for sure, it's not a 'big' problem, but it is a design mistake and an unforced error. As good as it was to keyword 'Mill' because that's what we already called it or start using 'Surveil' outside that one block for consistency, this decision is bad.
Magic only ever uses "enters" to refer to the battlefield. Just because players might think of things going to the graveyard or exile as "entering" those zones doesn't mean that's how the cards are worded. "Mana Value" to a brand new player with no context can also mix up what that exactly means, such as with Urza's Saga's tutor chapter ability, so both need to be taught to players. It's just like how they used to use "Discard" to refer to creatures going from the battlefield to the graveyard, and brand new players still make that confusion until they are taught how specific verbiage matters.
I can’t believe this episode recorded days before the commander ban announcement isn’t about the commander ban announcement
The lack of foresight is something we should have really seen comming
Something about the tiny thumbnail on my phone had me thinking Nelly was shirtless, and I was here for it!
I had that same thought
Yep same. I was like "Woah getting the washboard out today huh?" 😊
omg same I was like yep that's the content i'm for
Time Spiral was somewhere between 60 to 70 years ago. It was 60 years ago as of Amonkhet block.
I am engaging.
Also, the most fun i had at the prerelease was helping out the two people next to me and being friendly after my first gsme was over.

I believe it was (was also?) on MaRo's blog
the entirety of Norin lore is " he was there and then ✨Magic✨and he's here now. The end"
He already came from the Dark Age before the Ice Age, so now it's roughly 4000 years in his future.
Another cute lil thingy you can do with Norin is play your manifest dread noncreature spells and lands if they block em!
Nadon't expect that bird ever coming off the banned list as of today.
Screaming Nemesis combo doesn't work - it deals damage to any *other* target and can't hit itself.
Okay let's go other Screaming Nemesis combo. Rollercrusher Ride with X = 5, doubles to 10, target Nemesis, doubles to 20. Format solved.
Just replace it with Spitemare.
Nemesis can't target itself.
You need:
1) another nemesis
2) giving a gift with dawn's truce (to give your stuff indestructible)
3) pyroclasm (or a way to deal damage to any nemesis)
and
4) a way to give lifelink
for infinite life.

excellent episode, these two are a great pair. this is insightful and fun

Nelson did a great job as host!
Apparently Time Spiral happened like, approximately three days ago, at least according to Norin's personal timelime!
6:45 the other benefit with Norin is with the Manifested creatures. Exile a manifested creature with Norin allows you to play the front side of the card

unfortunately screaming nemesis targets any OTHER target for the damage, so not the same as boros reckoner.
Spitemare can target itself though, and has been around longer.
Surveil before you Manifest Dread with the Underwater Tunnel lets you ensure the Manifest you get is something you want, like a creature that can be flipped up rather than if you just Manifest Dread and the top two cards were a land and a spell you wanted to cast.
Spitemare predates Boros Reckoner, so Screaming Nemesis is a combo of TWO Shadowmoor/Eventide cards, Spitemare and Stigma Lasher.
The screaming nemesis infinite combo can be done using just one card: Take up the Shield gives both lifelink and indestructible!
Also, revealing Yargle and Multani to Monstrous Emergence lets you dome your opponent for 18, as well!

Yeah, "Final Vengeance" as name for such a common (xth version of "Bone Splitter") is a waste of a good (dramatic) name.

No, Final Vengeance is not a story moment.
I think they were talking what-ifs and remember-whens and such.

I love 35% of this set so dearly
Shame about the other 75%.
I can't tell if the 35+75=110 was intentional or not.
Also, it's more like 3.5% and 96.5% or so.
I haven't played it, but I'm loving the majority of this set, both mechanics and theming.
