After 2 years with little success at Motown, by late 1963 Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross had become known as the “no-hit Supremes”. With the help of songwriters Lamont Dozier and Brian and Eddie Holland they would finally hit pay dirt with this, their very first top 40 hit song. “When the Lovelight…..” peaks at #23 today on the Billboard Hot 100.
With one month left until the big trip to Hollywood, the final Philadelphia regulars dancing today are: Bruce Richard & Barbara Warchol (0:36), Bobby Baritz & Ailyene Silverman (1:57), Gary Stapleford (3:20) and Pat Carpino & Michelle Liebowitz (on the left at 3:27).
…..And while The Supremes were getting their first top 40 hit, the first “blip” on the radar for the British Invasion was also popping up. “I Want To Hold Your Hand” entered the Cash Box Top 100 at #80 today and will enter the Billboard Hot 100 at #45 next week. - เพลง

Just beautiful really nice people just having fun. Todays people are just wrong. I am happy I grew up in those days. No faking ear piercing no tattoos or Botox just naturally beauty.
I remember my mom trying to teach my brother and I this dance, in the late 1970's. We were to "cool" to deal with it...what an epic mistake I made.

Watched AB from 1957 until they were in LA. Never the same once they left Philly IMO. Not only for the music, but the '57 thru early '60s was super-special. Regulars were icons. Philly kids were smooth, much advanced for their years. I could name you a dozen ladies I had a thing for, although you'd know many if you watched back then. Even the black & white telecasts add nostalgia. I'm 74 and continued to watch less interested in the LA years, and also Soul Train until Don Cornelius left in the early '90s due to my love for the Black Sound. It laid the cornerstone for my formative years, and continues through today. I was from Wisconsin where C&W and Rock were the thing back then, but I was different and liked the East Coast sound. Doo-Wop in the '50s, then Motown in the '60s were my thing.
Interesting how we all seem to prefer our own generation.
Soul Train originally aired locally here in Chicago on Channel 26. Chicagoans said that the Los Angeles dancers weren't as good as the Chicago dancers. Motown's years were in Detroit. The Philly sound was phenomenal as well.
Hi there John, All your comments sounded just like I might have written them , as I too love Rhythm and Blues from first hearing it on the radio here in Philly, but mostly from AB from 1956-57, in through to 1964, and could never watch after the move to CA, sorry but I was prejudiced even being from The City of Brotherly Love & Sisterly Affection. Glad you liked us here in Philly, where we still do those dances at the oldies dances in Philly and South Jersey.
@@nicholasroby8936 Nicholas: thanks for your comment on mine. You could see the switch from the Lindy even in this '64 song. British Invastion was coming and society was changing - much for the worst. AB guys & gals in the '57-'62 period or so even danced slow dances elegantly. The way the gal wrapped her arm around his neck, and the couple moved in that neat circle around the dance floor, always the guy leading the lady, never the opposite. Very different in the Midwest where couples danced nerdy, and few guys ever danced fast . . . . until disco. Philly Bandstand was very special.

RIP Lamont Dozier. He and the Holland brothers wrote this song and many other which defined the soul of America.
Wow, I remember my mother buying this record and playing it like crazy around Halloween 1963! Detroit Music! LOL!

Was7 years old in’64 in Detroit and loved American Bandstand. My sister was 7 years older and it’s hilarious watching these older kids dancing bumping into each other sometimes. What was the age requirement to get into a taping of American Bandstand I wonder.
We were doing the Lindy Hop back in the day,..... I was 13, just learning by watching AB. There is a moral to the story,..... LIFE is better when you learn how ti dance "Holding on",.....think about it kids.
Quick, funny story about the Supremes. Back in 1967 my older sister, 18 at the time went to a Supremes concert, here in Toronto. Somehow she got backstage to meet all of them. Somewhere along the way my sister split open her pants. Lo and behold, Diana Ross took her to her dressing room and gave her another pair of pants. She still to this day has a photo from the experience.

This remains my favourite Motown song, nearly 60 years later! It's impossible to sit still to, and I can't even dance!
The Funk Bros. rhythm section, Benny Benjamin, drums, and James Jamerson, bass, were just great on this tune.
I'm one of those people who like the Supremes before they made it to the top 10. A Breath Taking Guy, and Buttered Popcorn (Florence Ballard lead) should have been top 10 hits in my opinion!

Simpler days and miss it
There's something about this set that gives off a warmer feeling that the later sets AB used. That it's still from Philly adds to the overall good natured look. For some reason, despite the "warm California sun", the move in the next few weeks gave off a cooler feel to the show. Little did these kids know, 29 days later, the Ed Sullivan show would air, and their cultural worlds and styles would slowly start to change.

I.absolutely loathe the late 60s through 70s fashions. I hate the way young people dress now. I was born in 1964 and back in the 80s and early to mid 90s we brought back the old styles from the early 60s and before. I loved that look. Now we look like piles of walking manure and puss and quite proud of it.

It was long overdue The,ABC network was slow to integrate American Bandstand , and know that some of my neighbors who happened to be African American had to get in the show in 1961, and they were great dancers too
One of my favorite groups - I was in Love with all three of them! The first album I bought back when I was a teenybopper and had purchased my “hi-fi” was a Supremes album. Motown music was the greatest!
Ah, yes! The first 45 by the Supremes that I purchased and still have in my collection. H-D-H pure genius. If music be the food of love -- play on! Bonus points, Aaron, for the clip that includes my favorite last of the Philly AB regular dancers, Bruce and Barbara!

I love this song but I’m curious, with so many great choices of songs to buy at the time and with the Supremes being unknown, what made you decide to buy this 45? Do you ever get out your 45’s and listen to those beautiful, original mono mixes?
@@YCDTI Hey Aaron. The mono mix is really the only way to go for songs like this, Heat Wave, Baby I Need Your Loving, My Girl, etc. Those mono mixes really pop out at you. Motown's mixing engineers were very meticulous about all of those mono mixes back then.
@dancer don Hey Don! Very interesting that this was your first Supremes 45 you bought. I too would like to know the circumstance surrounding that purchace, cuz it's still a song the "average" music fan doesn't know. But then again, you were there.
@@YCDTI The first time I saw the Supremes perform "When the Lovelight..." was on Lloyd Thaxton in 1963. I then bought the single. To this day they have been my favorite girl group. Could not get enough D-M-F to satiate my liking of the trio. My collection of 45's is well-worn from being played on an old school record player with a sapphire stylus, so it's rare that I take the gray-grooved records out for a spin nowadays.
@@thruthealcove Right on Kevin. See my reply to Aaron YouCanDanceToit! Add to the more obscure 45's I bought in 1963 is Mary Well's "What's Easy for Two is so Hard for One". I agree with your comment made to Aaron about engineering mono mixes. The one problem with mono releases was that the majority of 45's issued back in the day were very bass-heavy.
Detroiter here. I was a kid when all this music came pouring out. Thankful, proud and love the talent that will always be The D's best of the best.

I would love to know what the girl at 0:20 is saying. Can anyone read her lips? I was 13 in 1964. The Supremes was my favorite group! that I always listened to on AM radio back then. Great song here & I like the collage of happy teens. And yes this WAS the typical style of clothing & hair for that period. Thanks so much for sharing this!

#23 on the Pop Chart. Supremes were really excited. It wouldn't be long after this that they had their first #1 with Where Did Our Love Go. How neat for them.
When I was little I remember my older sister trying to teach me to do this dance. It makes ya miss being a little kid as I was the youngest and at the mercy to an older brother and two older sisters! LOL! Oh by the way I can do this dance better than they!

The shape of things to come for Diana, Mary and Flo. Months later the Supremes would come back with "Where Did Our Love Go", which they "broke" thanks in part to Dick Clark's help (he reluctantly agreed to have the trio on the Caravan Of Stars tour that summer - a condition set by Motown so that DC could book Los Angelino Brenda Holloway as a headliner). The Supremes performed "Where..." during the tour.
@Kevin Goins Yeah, he wanted Brenda Holloway,but Mrs. Esther Gordy Edwards made him take the Supremes too. I use to work for Mrs. Edwards.

@Kevin Goins, interesting insight. I didn’t realize The Supremes were an afterthought but it makes sense as they were so unknown in ‘63. I’m sure being on the Caravan helped their early career.

During their early Years at Motown they made their Bones by doing handclap and background vocals for everyone from Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells (RIP) and Marvin Gaye.

Just read the history on this clip. I wondered about the dancers and if any were dancing in later years on AB but now I know this was still filmed in Philadelphia. It must have been very sad ☹️ for these teenagers to lose such a fun experience in their surrounding neighborhood.

I forgot to say that they sang backup on Marvin Gaye's You're A Wonderful One and you can hear Florence's Voice distinctly. They also played Buttered Popcorn on The UK Drama Call The Midwife about a Group of Midwives and Nuns who work in some of England's Toughest Neighborhoods.

Good Severe Weather Warning Morning Guys and Dolls!! It's a balmy 70° in Kentucky today, with the wind blowing hell off it's hinges. Guaranteed to bring nasty weather eventually today. Now then....I love these old Philly videos! Great to hear the Supremes when they started. As for our dancers, apparently couples make a run for the camera, and it's everyman for himself. I thought those top 3 couples would have an all out brawl before the song was over! The line dancers have the right idea. I'm especially fond of that little hip bump step all the dancers do. As always, thank you Aaron for the big blast of the past. Looking forward to Wednesday.....if I'm not lost somewhere in Oz....with Toto too! 😊
@Jean Lankton, there is a lot of jostling and pushing in these final Philly clips. I’ve often wondered if maybe they were more anxious to get on TV as the end approached. I liked the jerk-like dancing done by the kids in front of Dick’s podium the best.
If I don’t hear from you on Wednesday, I’ll send out a search party. If you find yourself in Oz however, I’d just stay there if I were you....it’s way better than this place, lol.

It was a Friday morning - November 22, 1963. We were doing our science projects in class. This was the song that had just played on the radio just before the station stopped programming. There was a bulletin from Dallas, Texas. To this day, I get a chill and numb face when I hear this song.
WOW!!! Aaron, I had no idea Dick played this on the show! This is why preserving these clips & shows are soooooooo important! This song has so much energy & screamed HIT, but it was more of a popular song than the charts showed. HDH were beginning to crank out the iconic classics at this point, & what happens soon after this for them, The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas & so on, would live far beyond us!!!
The energy in the room was high, which let's me know those kids knew the song & enjoyed it. There was also some pretty good camera work here, a little more freedom around the studio.
I do enjoy the Philly episode quite a bit, maybe because I'm from the east coast myself. Lol but it's all still Bandstand. Thanks for this one Aaron, an extremely good surprise that Dick even played this! He really knew music. And I love how Motown was getting exposure so early on like this. @Rand Kocher Hey there. I'm fully aware of everything you said. But Motown wasn't MOTOWN at this point yet, and The Supremes weren't THE SUPREMES yet at this point either! Motown only had 4 huge hits when this episode aired: "Money (That's What I Want)", "Shop Around", "Please Mr. Postman", and "Heat Wave", so I was just surprised Dick even played this on the show cuz it wasn't a big hit for them. Plus the British Invasion wasn't for another year as well. So yes, I'm giving credit where it's due. I know the streets knew this song (my mother filled me in, lol), but as far as broad exposure, this was a good look. That's all I'm saying.

Maybe Kevin or Aaron can answer the question that I raised about the dancing being done to this really fast song by The Supremes? Don't you think this was too fast to do The Jitterbug to? Were the couples fixated on doing The Jitterbug because it looked better as a couple to have that contact dancing, and it did look great or were they just not doing The Pony much?
@@thruthealcove This first hit for the Supremes, came out in the fall of 1963. A couple of months later the British Invasion began. Quicksand by Martha and the Vandellas was popular also in the fall of 1963.

@suuzq35, that would make my day too. I have about 10 or so clips of the kids dancing to the Beatles in the 60’s, but they are all blocked on TH-cam. 😔
@@YCDTI I know one show you're referring to, it's the one where the Beach Boys pretend to sing Don't Worry Baby. The first 15 minutes or so, are dedicated to just Beatles songs only.

Did the Supremes ever appear on the American Bandstand TV show? I know they did the Caravan Of Stars tour the summer of '64. But what about on TV?
They did, though oddly enough, not when they they were touring with the caravan and first enjoying mega-success in ‘64. They would not appear on the show until 1967. The Supremes (with Diana Ross) made 2 live appearances on American Bandstand on March 4 and Aug. 12, 1967. Great question!

I remember seeing them twice in the middle 1970s singing their hits "He's My Man" in 1975 & I"'m Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking" in 1976.. Mary Wilson was the only original member in the group until she went solo & ended The Supremes. They were GREAT..
The Supremes were on Dick Clark’s caravan of stars…..when “where did our love go” went viral on sales/ radio airplay ….charts. Strangely they never appeared on AB stand …..despite having three #1’s in four months

I have a question maybe someone who reads this can answer ? This song by the Supremes was for me watching the dancers doing the Jitterbug, much too fast for that couples dance, but some managed to keep the beat okay. I would have done The Pony ,and did to that song, and saw 2 lines of dancers facing each other doing different dances, like The Swim, Pony, and did I see a third? When did dancers on AB start to do the line dances we were doing at the Jerry Blavat Record Hops at Wagner's Ballroom and Chez Vous Rink in 1964? Could you show a video where a line dance like the Chez Vous Walk was done . Today us Yon Teens from the 60's do a line dance called The South Jersey to "When The Lovelights Start Shining In Your Eyes" . I was not doing that line dance in 1964 to this song.
In this episode you can see the dancing was changing, people started to dance apart. The line dances started with Jerry Blavat his tv show The Discophonic Scene, which was very good

Some of the dancing here looks similar to other '63-'64 clips. Also, Pat Boone's daughters remade this song into an inspirational ballad in 1975.

Is there a website or a source I can go to to look at all the episodes of American Bandstand from 1964? My cousin was a regular on AB in 1964 when it moved to Los Angeles. He passed away last week and I would love to find a clip of him during role call. I keep looking through videos upload on TH-cam, but no luck. I appreciate any suggestions!

Philadelphia had better dancers than the west coast. Always felt that way even back in the day. Shame they got cut, but DC had to make prime time and more money! Advertisers! West coast dressed better!
