    "Reflections" is possibly one of their strongest songs. As a kid, the hits from the group just came wizzing by, then this-a serious dramatic big song. Just the tempo changes, the severity of the orchestration. All the while the ringing Motown rhythm, but the writing and melody is something else. Others have attempted to cover the song with mixed results. Nobody has come close to this original recording.

    Dude; you ain't never lied. Diana Ross was a bewitching fantasy figure.
    And that's what the "Diana Ross can't sing as good as Flo" crowd will NEVER "get". Ross was the perfect goddess / figurehead of the groundbreaking, newly emerged Motown Records.
    THAT'S what BG WANTED. NOT the gospel / blues yodeler. He wanted the Motown hood ornament / world ambassador. He rolled the dice with Diana Ross, and it WORKED; like no music label before or since.
    We LOVE Flo, but Diana was better suited.

      One of the enduring memories I have of the time when I was five years old was hearing this song quite a lot on CKLW 800AM, a radio station that was located in Windsor, Ontario and was noted for being one of the stations that helped put Motown music on the map, so to speak, and was probably also the most popular radio station in North America from the mid-1960s until sometime in the early 70s when Motown's star started fading.
      'Reflections' is a great song, and even if its meaning was lost on me at that early age, the emotion it contained was not.

    She's no imposter, she's Cindy Birdsong, and with great bravery she stepped into very-difficult-to-fill shoes. And this fan too resented her at first because we Knew Motown was lying to us about the real reasons to Ballard's departure. And Cindy got even less than the degree of exposure Ballard knew, as HDH left, Ross recorded with the Andantes, and on Gordy's orders, Mary and Cindy were pushed back further from the cameras to highlight you-know-who all the more. Supremes fans cringed.

I think the sweetest & most professional thing was when she "owned" being considered a Diva & also acknowledged her human frailties... she said she is never intentionally rude to staff or anyone... but admits she has moods just like everyone else. If you really want to get a sense of who she is...review some of those clips.

    Many have criticized Ross' voice and believe that the leads should've gone to Ballard. I think Gordy was smart to put Ross as lead because of her vocal uniqueness and star quality. With Ballard as lead, The Supremes would've sounded like Martha Reeves and the Vandella's and Marvelettes. They wouldn't have been special.

      Agreed. Like the Old Hollywood Studio System, Motown found a formula that worked and stuck with it. I think about how the members of KISS each did solo albums that were released on the same day while they were still very much a group. Same album cover art of tight headshots. But an opportunity for fans to experience the different musical nuances among band members. That could’ve been good for the Supremes artistically and in keeping peace among them. But Florence was the original lead singer of the group. Although she was a gifted singer, Berry recognized Diana’s marketable quirky appeal. He made the right decision. She is electric, odd - and most importantly MEMORABLE. It’s what makes superstars.

    • @dangerislander
      @dangerislander 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Listen to that slammin' bass line, the work of the great James Jamerson who recorded most of the Motown hits but was never properly credited. There are some good clips about him on You Tube. Please check them out.

    I like this song. It has a catchy melody and thoughtful lyrics that look back to the past. 'The way life used to be'. She lost love but life goes on. The word 'reflections' makes it philosophical in a way. M. Walker.
