It was not promoted by Motown the way it should have been, but that was more about timing. The Supremes in their very early days had misfired with all their singles up until this one, and it seems Motown was caught unprepared for its success. They were not yet the super glamorous girls that most people are familiar with when they released this song. Things changed only after Gordy made them over and polished them up.

@@hunkhk, Diana gets all the hate, yet if it weren't for her, no one would have even known who the Supremes were. She had to do 3x the work for the same pay. She suffered from anorexia, collapsed from exhaustion during performances, etc. Y'all probably think being a top billed entertainer is easy. Puhleeez..
And hmmmm, no oldies disc jockey plays the Jean Terrell, Mary Wilson, or Scherie Payne led Supremes records. Let's give Diana Ross her deserved props where they are due, and quit the negative silliness.

I kept on saying to hubby THAT'S DIANA, THAT'S HER. He said NO IT WASN'T. Of course, later on, he told me it was her but didn't want me to bother her. I was too much in shock to even wave at her or tap her on her shoulders.

This was a fabulous record that should have given the Supremes their first #1 single but Motown was caught unawares with it and couldn't get the promotion behind it that was warranted for a veteran act finally at last breaking smooth. But I don't know anyone who heard this who didn't think the Supremes were poised at last for a monster career. Thanks for the terrific edit and the visuals.

One night, soon after, I was hiding under my blanket, in the dark, with my earphone in and I heard Cousin Brucie for the first time. I was stunned when he sent greetings to , "all you kids listening secretly, hidden under your blankets." I was so thrilled; I felt like I was a part of some family or club. Then he played this song and during the musical break, he kept roaring after the voice on the record. it was one of those nights I will never forget, but it was months before I found out what this song was and who performed it. Cousin Brucie had played a list of records and didn't tell me which song was which.
