  • Do you need a degree in fashion design to work in fashion? There are few different pathways to start your career in fashion; some will require a degree, some won't. Depends on whether or not you want to work for a big fashion company, depends on whether or not you want to start your own company, depends on all sorts of other factors. In this video, I explore 4 main career path options to consider. Ultimately, you want to pick the path that's going to make you happy, not the path you think is "the right one".

Thanks so much for these kind of videos. It's not really possible for me to go to design school because of unpaid student loans, back when I wanted to play it safe and just be an English teacher. But after having to drop out of school and suffering from depression, I went back to drawing fashion- my first love. And while my drawings are so far from the best, I watch your videos to improve and be encouraged. I plan on starting my own line and just really going for it. Thanks so much for being an inspiration Zoe!

I am currently reading a book called "Why Fashion Matters" written by a head of London College of Fashion Frances Corner. There she writes about how already well informed about fashion students come to study. She points out that all this knowledge they get is easily approachable by anyone on the internet and questions why would anyone study if there's other ways to learn things. The answer she provides is similar to yours Zoe, and it's that people study fashion because they get something which the Internet can't provide: "a critically engaged overview of the industry, technical skills of the highest standards, a learning environment of like-minded peers and staff, and opportunities to explore and discuss different regional, national and international perspectives, cultures and experiences". I personally have been studying fashion for same reasons. Also, because I need some motivation to do stuff haha!

Some of the biggest designers don't have degrees!
The ones with the degrees are one who work for those folks...
I went to FIT...Loved it...but the main thing I learned:
School teaches you the technology of fashion, but if you don't have an "eye," you'll never have a successful career in the biz!

Hanneke Teunissen most dont though. Getting a degree in fashion is a fairly recent thing in the years so if some do they are probably fairly young designers, no more than maybe 40 years old or so. The older masters of fashion of course did not really have degrees because fashion is like art and you kind of need to work on art on your own creativity not directed by someone else.

    • @honeysweetbunbun
      @honeysweetbunbun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Hanneke Teunissen well i do know that most older designers dont have a degree. Not misinformed about that. I’m sure you’re correct that they did have a lot of access to other fashion forward information that allowed them to develop their talents and skills without the use of a degree but that also wasnt what I was talking about so why called me misinformed over it? Lol I’m well aware that many of them were able to access these things to make up for the lack of degree.

Hanneke Teunissen If you need school to be successful then you’re not self-motivated enough or enough of a hustler. Like she said, if you don’t have a natural unique, creative eye and talent, or enough motivation, drive and creativity, no amount of schooling can give you that. That’s what it takes to make it.

I’d say school is required if you’re going to work for someone else. If you plan to run your own business without school you are willfully taking on the responsibility to acquire all of the knowledge required. That means you have to take the time to learn accounting, fabrics, illustration, tech packs, inventory, design and more.
Learning the basics just gets you started until you can afford to hire things out - and even then you should still continue to learn because the less you know, the more you can get taken advantage of. If you didn’t do a stretch test on every roll of spandex that comes in for your new collection of body suits - good luck getting your money back for pallets of unusable fabrics. If you didn’t properly vet a new factory overseas and you have no means of proper communication with them, say goodbye to your money.
Sewing and design talent can only take you as far as your understanding of business, marketing, and proper management. Too many businesses fail over things like inventory or taking out more loans than they should based on the sell through rate of their products - or a customer service nightmare or misunderstanding net terms. I worked for a a amazing designer with her collections in Barney’s, Anthropologie, and Macy’s, but she still had to work as a bartender on the weekends and eventually went back to a 9 to 5.

Zoe I wanna just tell you how grateful I am that you make videos and I have access to your thoughts on all this shit. I've grown up pretty poor most of my life and probably will never be able to go to fashion school, but I do at least feel like I have an awesome professor. In true creep fashion, even though we've never met, I think "what would Zoe say" all the frickin' time. If I ever make my design business work you'll be a big mention in my fabricated future success speech ( because becoming a designer is like accepting on Oscar right??). For real though thanks a million, don't stop making videos.

Sorry if this is some unsolicited advice but I've been in the same boat and although I would consider myself ambivert and often reserved--the best way to get people to connect with you [in my experience] is asking them for advice!
Even if you already know xyz or just want some extra info saying "Oh that's really cool how did you that//I made this but I'm not sure if it's my best work, do you mind me asking what you think?"
You can exchange emails or numbers, really goes a long way!
Sn: I am a teacher but doing this in my 5th semester connected me to a girl that helped me get a dental office assistant job when I needed some extra cash, helped some friends make cash on an online tutoring platform I use as a side gig, & using Linkedin/Indeed has gotten me so many jobs/interviews as well even when I wasn't big on connecting! Ex: I had an opportunity to teach in China earlier this year and got the job! Declined to stay in NYC and complete my Master's but that opportunity is still there from connections alone!
Sorry for the long reply, hope it helps xx

Thank you so much for that. Knowing for someone who work in the industry say this, because Im a BFA student in Art Institute and Im so worried about the student dept. But just like what you said, going to college is very necessary on the brutality of the industry. Last week i've been thinking of dropping the class because I cant see the light at the end after graduation. But its all up to me if I just did the bare minimum to pass the class, or get the 4.0 g.p.a that I have. Having a 4.0 gpa is still not enough if I didn't take all the extra mile of being the best of the best, because it just means I just get the bare minimum if being on the top, but that doesn't reflect if I learned all the lesson and was able to apply it to real industry situation. By taking advantage of everything that they offer; the connection, work ethics, and being able to better than my professor are the things I will not learn even if I read all the fashion book available. So thank you so much, for verifying that my reason of not leaving the school is the right argument not to drop it.

I dropped out of fashion school because I felt like my motivation was drained out of me and I wasn't learning anything about fashion so when I had to learn or create something, I had to look for TH-cam so I thought what is the point on paying for school when you have to learn from TH-cam so I quit the school but I cannot give up my passion for fashion. Thank you, this video helped me a lot so I can go on track......basically teaching in my school sucked😑😑😑

The external motivator thing is so true for me and that's why I'm saving up to go to art school right now. It's very interesting to me that the struggles are the same in art schools that they are for fashion in terms of work load, being pushed to the limit, high amounts of things created, and stress. I think artistic schools are literally like boot camp for us!! No exaggeration 🤣

My background is in banking and design is more of my hobby; so this is more of a general point. Regarding resume scanning, they also do this for keywords so use the job application to build your resume submission for that particular job (because your resume should be slightly different for each job you apply for) based on the keywords and qualities they list in the application.
Also discuss your soft/transferable skills, if you have a BFA odds are they know you picked up construction/design skills just the same as I don't list derivative pricing when discussing my finance degree, they requested it so they know what it is. They want to know things like if you learn quickly, work well under deadlines/pressure, are adaptive and how that relates to your education and experiences

I just graduated, and got my degree as an New Media Artist, and through the 4 years of academia, i really got to like the garments aspect that i saw incorporated in Installations, Performance Art, Site-Specific, and other forms of new media. Thats why i got interested in fashion, but i really dont have the funds to start another school all over again, so im hoping that doing it solo, with willpower alone will be enough.

f$%^ your ducks, lol that is great Zoe that is what I needed to learn in my life but glad I finally did. . This is a great video. Thanks!! I will say that I spent all my life pushing myself to the max to try to make things happen!! But I never gave up on design (not fashion) but (I am now loving textile design for interiors more and more I have a beginning foundation degree in residential planning) but did not ever use it or thought that I couldn't. Now I see how things are finally piecing together, just a few more years of schooling to hone my craft and maybe I could see a small business or something sooner than what I was projecting!! Yes you saved this moment. . Now to get back to work. Plus, I now found out how to pick just one focus instead of trying to be master of them all. With nothing to show. Thanks Spice Chick

Hey Zoe, I did not have a fashion/ design background but a language one. I climb up that ladder by starting off being a translator for designers and technicians(for a 4000 people lingerie vendor for renowned brands in China)where I learned tons of knowledge and at a point the company was being super supportive sponsoring me for a design diploma. Eventually I was promoted to a designer level and now after 6 years I am off to do my own freelance work/ business. I think this can be also a way of getting a job in fashion, by being some designer assistant? Emma

Many companies asking for a degree in fashion, but I thing what in reality importance is the experience you have no matter if you have it or not, I'll been working as a pattern maker for 15 years and I don't have a degree, but I have a little problem with the communication because I don't speak English well, but in practice I can do the job.
