I'm 16🙈🙈,(I've been sewing since i was 12)and i sell cute dresses at my high school and to friends. (alot of my friends say i should do fashion but i only do it as a hobby because i want to study nursing😊) I decided to start my own business because dresses at stores are waaaay too expensive, so i create sexy peices for affordable prices because i know how it feels to be broke girl who just wants a pretty dress or to look good at a function or party, and my business boomed within just three days, im so happy but I'm scared because I'm in grade 12(my final year of high school) idk how to focus on sewing by myself and focus on school work 🙈❤️i try to manage my time, my parents really support me. I still need to do my labeling and packaging. I can't wait for this year!!! I'm nervous but I'm going to push myself❤️😊
These questions are not just specifically designed for the fashion industry. These questions are also applicable to a lot of industries. As a businessman, these questions are important to strategic decision making.
I’m so glad I went into Fashion Merchandising but thank you for talking about this, I learned some things not addressed in uni. I think another good point is to work in retail to learn how a business operates.
Starting my own makeup and fashion company has been my dream since I was in the fourth grade! This video was so helpful so please continue this series and thank you for this advice!
You are a save haven for all of designers, I am a fashion design student who recently dropped out of college because of lack of funds, I can't find a job because I have not finished my degree yet and my only option is to start a business, this is very helpful thank you
i find your channel really helpful and lately i've started to, very loosely, develop a company and i'm researching a lot about starting a fashion business here in Portugal. if you continue this it would help me so much. so yes continue it please
I'm currently doing my economics bachelor and i had several classes where we used the Business Model Canvas. It's basically a canvas to help anyone answer the most critical questions concerning any business, just as the ones you mentioned in the video. A great tool which gives a good overview. Strengths and weeknesses become more obvious this way and can be fixed earlier if needed.
Another gem!!! Zoe, as a business person who has always loved fashion and am now going after my dream of creating my own label, you provide more concrete advice and content than many of my classes at Parsons. If (but really when :-)) my business is successful, it will be due in part to your help and guidance. Thank you so much for what you do!!
you are good, Zoe. I watched one or two of your videos a year ago, checking if i can do Fashion design without school cuz i've been dreaming fashion for many years (i'm an artist and graphic designer) but never found a school that matched my needs: evening hours and no sewing involved. I took a serious sewing course many years ago and it just was NOT for me. in any case - i loved your stuff but realized I DO need a course. and sure enough i found one! the ad came to my email! now that i'm almost done with the course (we're up to tech packs now) i came back to your videos and they are so helpful!!! i'm gonna watch one every day. thank you so much!!!
Zoe I just wanted to say, you honestly are probably one of, if not THE most useful source of information for people who are nervous, new, uncertain in this business. Ive learnt more from you in the past 2 weeks than I have from anyone else on youtube. Please keep on doing what you're doing. You've helped me, and I am sure so many others. THANK YOU!
Omg. #4. Absolutely. I can do cocktail like it's no one's business. But don't ask me to make jeans with a front fly. Ugh. I like and have a quick hand for invisible zippers. So I lean towards back and side openings.
I think what I like more than the education you give, is the fact that you not giving shout outs and “click the like and subscribe button” things for the first 30minutes of your videos 🥺🥺🥺🖤😭
I have been in and out of a decision for years, mostly because my demographic is abroad and I am not comfortable selling away from my demographic as I want to be there and discover possible new upcoming trends.
Thank you so much Zoe! I just recently came across your channel and I couldn’t be happier. There really isn’t so much out there on fashion and you really, really help. I’m gonna learn so much thanks to you and be ready for the fashion industry. ❤️❤️
Done thumbs up Zoe... I feel like having a lectures on fashion without attending a class.. Everyday i watch and carefully focus on your tips sharing... I have no background in fashion. I learn sewing through youtube tutorials and local fb group ( Geng Jahit) in Malaysia. This group gathers tailors and fashion background. I learn a lot from then and from you too.. Thank you for this sharing.. Keep sharing and i will keep watching and take note and share to my friends.. 😍😍😍
I want to start a petite fashion brand so bad because I struggle so much with finding clothes that fit me and are affordable at the same time. but I don't have any fashion design/ business experience but thanks for all your info. Maybe you can do a whole series on it?
Your videos inspire me! I want to become a designer with my own business in the future, with an intent to offer more to men’s fashion, as I have felt so limited to what I can wear as a boy. Thank you!!
I never knew some companies started out with 2 products. I guess at first it's about really nailing a product that satisfies a customer's needs/wants and then scaling from there? Thank you for this awesome video.
Hey guys, if you're looking to start a clothing line in the UK I recommend The Pattern Room they do Tech packs, Pattern Cutting, Sampling and Small production runs MOQ 5-10 made in England
You are an amazing human! Really grateful for your insight and honesty. I value that you're walking the walk and using your resources to reach everyone in the fashion industry!
Thanks alot... I just start learning dress designing... But in my country, Iran, it is somehow difficult... There is'nt real fashion designing course, show, business etc. I really really Thank you...
Good video as always Zoe. You inspire me even though I'm not in fashion, your videos have this thing that I can articulate...they force me to critique my own work and be accepting of other people's inputs. I'm actually currently reading 'Start with why' by Simon Sinek, I recommend it.
Thanks Much Zoey for this New Year Motivational Video! It’s another year to Dream and set some goals, hopefully I achieve something better this year! 👍🏻❤️🎆🍀
I'm in love with your channel and I've been watching this lately very closely and I totally feel you have the answers to my questions but more important, the questions to my answers! I know it might sound naive but some of the things you say on your videos are situatios I was figuring them out by myself and now I see I am more aware of most of them that I thought I really was (apparently) Even though I have some experience in my fashion field, I realize I lack a looooooot of things to restart my brand (I had to close my store and move out due to political issues in my country Venezuela) One of the things I've learned with my brand is that the kind of customer you choose is not necessarily the one who is attracted to your brand. I agree with having a partner that can work in those things you know you can delegate.
This video is very helpful and is the turning point, who want to start a business. Really I had learnd from you how to make startup. It is very very positive response. I also like you so much looking for an anthepronours business.
HI Zoe!! I know your talking about serious stuff I was trying to find the video about why you would not ever go on on of those reality fashion shows...truly hilarious anyway cant find it!! Am I not looking in the right place? Cheers from way up North where work boots and Carharts are fashionable. Probably why i love this channel.
Hello mam i am from india i really loved your video it really helped me i am eagerly looking forward to more uploads like this...thank u so muchhhh!! You are doing a really great job!
Hey Zoe , I love your videos and soak in all the expertise. Would you make a video on the essentials of setting up a small production unit. Like what machines are necessary, what are the overheads and How should one decide and manage the wages .
Very good points Ms. Zoe Hong! Got a question as I know few local designers(I live in Miami)who do made to measure evening wear but also sell at smaller boutiques. The question for you is with so many options at many price points been made in Asia do you think is a good business to go after that particular sector? Again, thanks for loving Fashion and for sharing so much through your wonderful channel!
Hi Zoe, So want to know your opinion on some businesses that just put out weekly collections without any themes. Like fast fashion businesses. In my country I never see those businesses sticking to a theme in style, color etc. But they sell pretty big, weekly collections include 20-30 styles. So I wanted to know is it really necessary to find an underlying theme for the collections you create, or just go with each piece you design? What do u think?
I'm 21yrs old from Nigeria but living in Egypt but I Am returning back to my country soon but i do like to own my own company too an start my own fashion company so i wish for successfully tnks
I’d be curious to know your take on fast fashion e-commerce sites like Shopify and woocommerce. It seems like a lot of folks who aren’t designers, nor intend to be, link up with wholesalers, and the items they sell are maybe about 40% the product and 60% about the marketing or on some occasions I see 20% about the product and 80% about the marketing. Do you feel this kind of quick and easy access to a part of the fashion industry takes away from the ingenuity or creativity that has long been attributed to the field? Or do you feel like we’re heading in an alternative way of creating a fashion brand/label?
Hey Zoe.. This video was very helpful to gather some thoughts, as I am on the planning process to launch my business in 2020.. But here’s a question though.. Your 1st question - Why? Now how unique should the answer to this question be? I mean.. if my answer was “because I want to build a sustainable brand selling fusion wear”.. would that answer suffice? 🤔 There maybe another 10 new designers who might be thinking like me and have the same answer to the “why?”.. So is that okay? Thanks a ton for your reply, and also for your amazingly informative videos 😍
You should watch my "Who is my customer?" video, which is a follow up to this one. You have to strike a balance between a niche audience and becoming so narrow that your audience is 5 people. What is fusion wear?
Zoe Hong thanks a ton, I’ll take notes from the video 😊 Fusion wear is Indo-western outfits.. Where we blend in the patterns/fabrics/embroidery techniques of Indian tradition/origin with styles & patterns of western clothes.. For example, a mini skirt or a high-low skirt made with fine cotton (mulmul), with Chikankari embroidery (originated and done mostly only in Lucknow, India) - this would be a fusion attire or Indo-western attire.. (although this was just a very basic example, the creativity is endless!)

There maybe another 10 new designers who might be thinking like me and have the same answer to the “why?”.. So is that okay?
