    I scored one of these very cheap from a friend. It had been in storage for years. After jamming on it for about 15 minutes, it suddenly shut of. Then I noticed it was insanely hot! It turns out that it had the notorious PCB board issue that these sometimes have. The cool thing is that Marshall makes a handful of new boards every year, because of this reason. So I brought to our local amp tech, who’s Marshall certified, and he put a new board and some new power tubes in it, and it sounds amazing. I prefer the more open sound with the tone shift off, but to each their own. You made it sound great. Keep up the good work man. Cheers!

      Thanks for commenting. I'm glad you got it worked out. It's definitely worth the efforts. After listening to the video on my car stereo system, I kind of prefer the sound of the tone shift off as well.

    After not playing in about 10 years, I decided to start again a little over a year ago and this was the first amp I purchased when I started again.
    It’s an absolute powerhouse and of all the other amps I’ve purchased (4 others), this is the one I’ve kept gravitating back to.
    I’ve since sold all but one other so I can have a dual amp setup.
    You basically favor the same settings I do including deep and tone shift switches in.
    I also add an eq pedal in the effects loop for additional tone sculpting.
    Other than the bias drift issue the earlier releases of this amp had before marshall corrected it, I don’t get the hate some people have for this amp.
    I’ll keep this amp forever. Great demo! 🤘

    When you are not familiar with the amp dont rush for video. Tone shift not tone boost, and the presence you are trying to use for ch2 is the upper knob- these amps are made to sound better without tone shift, if you are looking for mid scooped sound - get something else!!

    • @someonehadtosayit2566

      For more mid scoop, all you need is an eq pedal in the effects loop but that can be said for any amp.

    When Marshall amps went public (inclusion of a board of directors) in 1998; Jim Marshall had to concede to letting the board take over on amp designs. Basically, Jim Marshall wanted to make a 5 channel amp that would TRULY cover all aspects of guitar. At the time, Mesa was selling the Mark 4 and even though Mesa was violently molesting their customers with way overpriced abysmal sounding amps.....JIm .Marshall felt Mesa had a good idea albeit it with teriible execution. So Marshall wanted to make a 5 channel amp with dedicated tone stacks and options for each channel. Each channel would have its own eq, m.v. and deep and bright circuits with high/low gain switching . Jim was outvoted at the board meeting and had to settle for making the TSL 100. The amp was originally going to be called the "Marshall Non Rectified X5" , but the board thought that would've been hard to market. Also springing up around this time is the highly underrated MODE 4 amp. That amp was used by the US Military for troop morale during concerts as it was the only amp that could take the heat of the Afghanistan dessert. Kid Rock took his band over seas to Kabul and the band had to put the Mesas into storage and BUY Marshalls in country because the sissy built Mesas could not handle the heat. Luckily there was a fantastic musical instrument store in Dohkanistan were the band could buy Marshall's. The US troops were said to be amazed by the guitar tones from the Marshall's and were extremely glad Kid Rock played for them. Over the years, Kid Rock did several shows to show support for the US Troops. The bottom line is this: Mesa is a horrible company and should be arrested and jailed for making terrible procucts. Marshall is superior in all ways and constantly pushing the boundaries for the betterment of rock music. Marshall gave us the Stones, Dire Straits, Lynard Skynard, Boston, Van Halen and the LA Metal scene. Mesa gave us Limp Bizkit and 'Nu-metal" Enough said.
    Also, The real winner here is the EVH Iconic. The EVH Iconic blows everything away!! Best tube amp ever made. And it won't burn your house to the ground.

    • @TheCyberMantis
      @TheCyberMantis ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cool story. Yeah, MESA sucks. But a lot of Marshall amps also suck, and have lots of design issues and quality issues. Same thing with EVH amps. The EVH Iconic is a hybrid amp that is mass-produced in CHINA. It's more reasonably priced, but it is not really all that great. I'll take a Boss Katana Artist head over the Iconic all day long, and for HALF the price. The Katana is also NOT made in China or Mexico. ( Which is a big plus. )

    Thank you great review and geeat tone! My main amp last 25 years. I've had many folks go out of their way to compliment my tone. There are footswitch connection issues and I finally got them permanently fixed. These issues happen with frequent plugging/unplugging and if they remain unrepaired, the amp will eventually have no sound output. I know someone who bought one for a $200 Changed one channel switch resistor and got it working. I've always said it sounds "close to an 800" \m/

    I have a tsl 100 that I run through a 2x12 rectifier cab w/ vintage 30s and it sounds amazing. I prefer the mid boost and deep switch engaged on the crunch and lead channels with the bass eq at about 9 O'clock and mids at around 10 O'clock and treble at about 1 O'clock for a good in the mix tone. For unmixed chugging room sound, turn the mids down and the bass up.
    This is a great amp that does not require a boost at all for just about any sound.
    I used to run 2 4x12 marshall cabs, 1 with G1275s and 1 with 2 greenbacks and 2 vintage 30s for an absolutely glorious metal tone for live performances.

  • @InDecemberOfficial
    @InDecemberOfficial 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    5:19 you're using the presence + deep control of the clean channel while being in the crunch channel, so that won't work (Crunch + lead channel have shared poweramp controls). Also, the crunch channel is basically an exact copy of the jcm800 2203/04 preamp except for the tone shift button. If you want 800 tones, you shouldn't engage the tone shift, just dial the mids back (like most do on an 800) to get a more compressed sound, then boost it with a SD1 for the metalz.

    The overdrive pedals in front this amp to control the flubby mud, is the mudkiller or friedman buxom boost. These allows you dial in the right and perfect chug sound. I do prefer the jcm 2000 DSL 50 though. This one has a second lead channel, extra more gain which growls dark, lean and mean...

    • @timothymartin2137
      @timothymartin2137 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if you get a good TSL its not ...and the JVM is a totally different beast sonically...more modern in the upper mids if you know what I mean....the TSL is older school type tone (well...maybe transitional from JCM800 to JVM)

    • @KaddysJamKave
      @KaddysJamKave ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@timothymartin2137 Point is... the JVM basically has 6 gain channels, 3 crunch modes and 3 cleans. You can make a JVM 410h sound like a TSL 100 if you dial it in... it is THAT diverse / configurable. It's just a better amp overall in my opinion. You can even get very very close to a Jcm 800 2203 which Euge Valovirta has demonstrated.

    • @timothymartin2137
      @timothymartin2137 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you cannot get it to sound exactly the same...the upper mids carry differently....people love to say I have a muti channel amp...with one grating sound all through it!!!!!!! The TSL has a Crunch channel clean and lead and they all do what they are supposed to...the JVM has everything you say BUT the channels are barely variations on gain amount and most could be dropped from the amp with no ill effect...I really dont see where it is as versatile as the TSL./..you do understand the TSL is PRE GAIN TONE STACK...so you get a variation on the gain sound...the JVM is post and you get a NEED for more channels with that type of tone stack (I am saying my TSL wil give me shit tons more tones than ANY JVM>>>PERIOD!!!!!!! yes...with less channels....all these amps could be distilled to one channel for all the difference you get in the channels (EXCEPT THE TSL>>>IT IS ARCHITECTURALLY DIFFERENT more like a Mark amp in some respects...and I own two Mark amps so I am not talking out of my ass!!!!)

      The JVM410H has all the Marshall tones, no problem. It doesn't quite have the same feel of other amps though. So you can dial in a Plexi tone, but it won't quite have the immediacy of an actual Plexi. It's a small price to pay, considering the clean channel is incredible, and the OD1 green and orange modes are worth the price of admission alone. I sold my 1987x when I moved to modeling for cover gigs, but the JVM I just can't part with...just in case Alice Cooper calls one day 😂.

    I gigged the Marshall TSL’s for a decade. They are ultimately a flawed design.
    Both Amps have the flawed footswitch. I used to get through two a year & they were never fit for professional use.
    The 100 is good apart from the FX loop, which for someone playing 90’s style alternative rock. Added a loss of top end to the overall tone.
    The 60 watt version has a brilliant Fx loop. However it’s not really a three channel amp but a two channel amp with an extra gain stage. I could only get a decent tone by running the master volume at 4 O clock (any higher and you got a pop changing channels), then controlling the volume with the channel volumes and gain.
    Ultimately the JVM is the better design. I ended going to a single channel Blackstar Artisan 30 & using pedals for my gain stages.
    Also the early versions had an issue with arcing electrically. You can still buy the version 2 TSL100 motherboard in some stores. I think they updated the design in 2002.

    On the clean channel, engaging the mid boost disables the mid pot....the mid pot is only available when you have the mid boost off (on clean channel only) The Clean channel ins only treble and bass with mid boost on (TO MAKE IT CLEAR) (NOT EVERY CHANNEL SHOULD BE EITHER CLEAN OR RAGING HIGH GAIN>>>TRY DIALING IN A MASSIVE CRUNCH TONE!!!!!!!)
