I’ve played lots of Marshalls over the years. Two years ago I almost randomly bought this TSL100 head with a matching 1960A cab. It was too cheap and I figured I couldn’t lose on it. If I don’t like it, I’ll just sell it again for the same amount of money. I was hesitant, because they seemed to have a bit of a bad reputation. But hell was I wrong. This was the PERFECT MARSHALL sound for me. The cleans are unbelievable, the crunch is just how I like it and the Lead channel had more than I needed, but so good. Two independent fx loops, I couldn’t be happier.
I had a similar situation about 2 years ago, but with a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 50. I bought it for the cab but it has become my favorite amp (even over my JVM 410 Satriani model and my EVH EL-34)! I was worried about the bias drift issue I heard about, but no issues whatsoever. I would like if all channels/modes were footswitchable, which got me looking into the TSL.
@@Patrick-857 : So are Mesa Boogie amps. But most guitarists don’t know anything about that. We have the option to choose between thousands of amps and if you can find one you really like for a very good price, that’s what you buy. 🥴
@mariodriessen9740 Well hopefully you have one that doesn't have the issue with conductive boards, because it will begin burning power tubes, and the repair isn't cheap. It's a great sounding amp with serious design flaws.
i am a punkrock guitarist from germany and i came across a TSL 100 for sale in february this year. i bought it for 560€ ($613 US), which included a full check-up by an amp tech plus a full set of spare preamp and power tubes. i have absolutely no complaints about it, i'm playing unboosted with no effects and what i like the most is the fact that it has this special roughness and spikyness to it that lets this amp come out even next to a very well distorted bass. yet it is true that many amps of the first production years have heat problems which cause the tube board to break and become conductive. this is not only a possible threat to your health and life, it also makes the amp buzz and hum even with your guitar volume turned off. marshall revisioned this model in 2004 or 2005 with new tube boards, so if you want to buy one make sure that you are buying either one of the late productions or one that has been revisioned by a professional tech.

I got a TSL 100 brand new with the cab in 2001 - 2002. I played and toured + rehearsals exclusively with that amp from 2002 until 2009 (Gibson SG - no boost, on the Crunch Channel for Punk/Hardcore), every week + bad treatments on the road, and it never failed, always delivered the guts. And it had rough times! I loved this amp, and I still have it to this day!
Bought mine around the same time, had it 20 years before finally moving it on. Such a workhorse, it just needs some decent volume to come alive. Always wanted to try the mods the guys from Rosetta did to theirs because they absolutely punished their TSLs live and they sounded huge.
I’ve had a few amps, tube, valvestate, and solid state over the last couple of years and my tsl100 is the one I’ve kept gravitating back to and is definitely the keeper out of all of them. Also, along with an od in the front as a boost, I was most blown away when adding an EQ pedal in the effects loop which I would recommend on any amp with the effects loop option. Great review on a phenomenal amp!
I picked up a TSL60 head for $400 a couple years ago. I loved it so much, I bought a JCM2000 DSL50 head a week later! The deep switch gives it some huge balls!!!... but the tone shift mode doesn't float my boat. Love them or hate them, the JCM2000's will become a classic and keep going up in price just like the JCM900's did.
Same with the Vintage Modern line. Very under appreciated for what they are, a pre jumpered JTM45 with a master volume and built in boosts. Incredible amps, but they didn’t sell well enough. I’m just mad at how rare they seem to be now.
Hi Kyle, Just FYI. I have the same amp and I love it. I was watching you toggle the Deep Switch on and off when using the crunch channel. There was no difference in sound because if you look to the right of the reverb control, the Deep switch, Presence, FX Mix and Reverb are assigned to the Clean channel. The Crunch and the Lead channel share the upper controls. Look to the right of the Reverb, it's written. Keep up the great work!
Just here to reaffirm my TSL60 purchase a year ago. Glad to see another person enjoying this fantastic amp! I use the walrus audio agës overdrive too!! Modes three and four are where I live. I personally pump mids and cut a little bass and treble. It also makes shelving for bass later in recording easier.
The lead channel is thin, it is designed to cut through the band mix for your lead tone. I rarely use the lead channel for crunch tones, but it can be done. If you want to make the lead channel more beefy, boost the bass, cut the mids, the treble and presence to taste. Then just turn the channel volume back up to get unity gain. Also the tone shift, can be useful for getting a completely different tone on either channel from this beast. Once you engage the tone shift, rebuild the tone from scratch. Tone shift, is very useful for recording tones, that sit well in the mix. Have fun!
Hey so what about the crunch channel? Do you use it for Rythm guitar? Is it better? What if I want a crunch and then go full blasting sound? Should I use a booster? Another overdrive to push the amp?
The crunch channel is excellent and can be used for leads and rythms. I use three different overdives, when i use a TSL live. You can mix and match the overdrives or stack them to get the tones you are looking for. Let me make something clear so no one misunderstands me, there is nothing wrong with the lead channels voicing. Its voicing serves a purpose. I just had to chime in, because there are alot of TSL haters out there. For me, the TSL is Money in the Bank! @@robertgolfetto
Gigging with this amp right now. Doing everything from Sugarloaf and Cream to Royal Blood and other more modern heavier tones. This amp was one I hated when it came out as well, but now it’s doing exactly what I want it too. Going through a Bogner 2x12, and using a DD7 in the FX loop. Sounds great! @@stallionstudios I love Green Eyed lady, but that’s the only time I want the word loaf in anything! Lmao. When I tried it originally, I wasn’t as good at using the amp to its full potential, and I think it must’ve had that deep switch in. I just remember I was on there for 2 mins and I had enough. Avoided them…..but the situation right now is I’m using my friends TSL and it’s working for me, but I also don’t EQ it like other amps, it has a lot of highs and midrange, so yeah….getting better at EQ’ing and using tube amps to hit full pot I’ll.
I bought one of these on a whim cause it was cheap not expecting anything great and was actually kinda blown away. Definitely one of my favourite amps I currently own. They do have an overheating problem that did eventually cost me quite a bit cause it damaged the amp, but I still decided to fix it and keep it.
Playing in a hardcore band myself makes me so happy you're all about the chugs and cover both Hatebreed here with this amp and play All Out War at the end ❤
I’ve owned this amp for about 5 years. I inherited it from a friend who passed away. In the beginning I didn’t like the sound of the amp and it sat for around two years. I couldn’t sell it because of the sentimental value. While I was waiting for a replacement set of tubes for my Budda Superdrive 45 I dusted my TSL100 off and fired it up. It’s very easy to make this amp sound like a glorified metal zone but if you leave the tone switch off, deep switch in, set to the crunch channel with a boost in front it comes to life. The clean is amazing and the crunch channel reminds me of my 800. I can get modern metal to 80’s trash and I don’t ever use the lead channel at this point. It was a very under rated amp for awhile but prices have been increasing in the last two years.
I have this amp for 15 years now. The crunch channel with gain on 9 and a hard boost (ts or sd with max level and a bit of gain) does metal very, very well! Using it this way, you still have the lead channel, with its own volume control, for actual leads. The amp works best with Marshall Celestion Vintage and/or Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. The deep switch is horrible on lower volumes. Makes the amp very boomy and flubby. At home, max the bass on the crunch channel, without the deep switch. In a band setting at higher volume, you can use the deep switch, but then you must lower the bass knob a bit. Tone shift is horrible. Do not use it. The lower power amp setting butchers the tone of the amp. Just avoid it. Last month I finally discovered how the fx loop works without killing volume + tone. The loop only works with buffered pedals which can take line level signals. If you can, set pedal to "kill dry" and level on pedal to max. Use the fx mix knob from parallel loop to mix as little as possible in. This way you can only use 1 pedal (unless you make a parallel loop on your board), but it actually works.
Used a TSL through a 1960TV for a couple of gigs in the mid 2000’s, sounded huge and I wasn’t even boosting it. Great, great amps but I do prefer my current JVM.
Yeah I love my JVM 410. Everything I need for metal and rock in one amp pretty well. I use fender amps for blues since I like that thick saturated drive sound with a tube screamer (or a nice clean jazz/funk tone). Other than that the marshal does everything I want it do.
Love my 1997 JCM2000 DSL. Somehow has not failed me yet!! Always wanted to try a TSL, they pop up at Guitar Centers in my area from time to time. Maybe I'll nab one one day.
I love my TSL. They’re great sounding amps. But there should’ve been a class action over so many of the jcm2000 boards becoming conductive. I still love Marshalls but I can’t pretend they didn’t totally dodge a liability bullet and it sucks that consumers had to just eat it with the defective PCBs. I put a rev20 board in mine so the bias is fine now but they should be giving out rev20 boards for free instead of them being 200 bucks. So not only did Marshall not have to deal with a class action, but get to profit off the sale of functional boards that shouldn’t need to exist for amps they already sold for a profit.
I've had one of these for years. I wasn't a fan of Marshall before it got dumped in my lap. I got too good of a deal to pass up, and my plan was to just turn it quick and buy something I actually wanted. Once I got home and was testing everything, I decided to keep it. These things shred. It seems to be Marshall's effort to make something that would sit next to the 5150s and Mesa that were gaining popularity in the 90s. At least that's the feeling I get playing in it. I have very similar thoughts of the amp, as you stated here. Stay belligerent!
I have the 60 watt version of this amp head and it roars through my JCM900 1960 Cab with G12-HT75s.. can’t wait to watch the video man! I’ve been thinking about them with v30’s so can’t wait!
Great vid Kyle. I’ve had the TSL100 for years and love it to bits. Always sounded wicked through a standard 1960a (un-boosted), but now smashing it through an orange 2x12 with a boost for more of a metal tone. The crunch channel is absolutely my fave. Sounds awesome.
Well, I caved and just bought a 2011 TSL100 to pair with my JVM410H. Revisited your video has me more stoked about getting another, so thanks! The first one from ‘99 was rougher than advertised and I figured get rid of it while it still worked.
I would leave the JCM900 out of the discussion. Especially the SLX version. I put KT66's in the power section and it absolutely killed. Sure the Dual Reverb version kinda sucked but, the others are great amps. I used my SLX for many years and multiple bands. They are also the only version of the 900 line to use actual preamp tube gain and not diode clipping.
I know absolutely nothing about this amp. This is the most I’ve learned about this particular model of Marshall. I’m thinking it’s a little dark sounding but definitely workable! I dig it!
Sounds awesome! I don't know if I would have paid the $1,999 (~$3,500 with inflation taken into account) for a brand new one in 1998, but considering how cheap you can get them now I'd say it's a no-brainer.
@@stallionstudios I would definitely choose the JVM410 over the TSL100, but the price difference is pretty significant. The JVM is sooo damn good though. Without a doubt the best of the last original designs from Marshall. I guess that's why it has the longest lasting production run out of all the Marshall amps!
they were £1000-1200 ish (about $1200-1500) in the UK when they were released, so really not too bad over here. To put in perspective a 5150 block was a similar price, and Mesa stuff here would be like 2k for a recto. I guess a lot of it is Import duty. Engls here are similarly priced , where as I understand in the US they are really expensive?
I apologize if you have already covered it (and I am going to go look), but man I would love to see you do an episode on the Marshall Valvestate. Especially if you can shoot it out with an Orange Super Crush and or the Peavey Vypyr, that would just be sick.
It's undoubtedly true, what you said about people rejecting and misunderstanding newer models, but the 900 is kind of its own exceptional case. See, they made a mistake. They saw that the 800s were being well received, but they also found out that everyone was setting the gain fairly low and putting overdrive pedals in front to push them. The 900 was supposed to be a solution to that, and they literally put a whole solid state front end, including silicone diodes in a clipping circuit, into the new, more complete, 900 models. It was impossible to have control over that pedal when it wasn't a separate thing from the amp, and the kind of compression and clipping that happened just didn't sound or feel like what everyone was expecting. Never mind if you had no idea that this had even been done, so you tried to back off on the gain and then push it up front with a pedal the way you would with any other Marshall. They even did a little bit of diode clipping trickery with a couple 800 models, and those particular models are nowhere near as well liked. Marshall just needs to stop doing that.
There is absolutely no doubt about the TLS being a great amplifier. Unfortunately not only the early models have their technical issues. If you love your TSL100 get a decent technician and let him perform some preventive stuff to it. Bias Drift, Speaker output grounding and heater trace reinforcement. I did this to my TSL when it still was under Warranty and i never had any issue whatsoever. This amp has one of the best sounding Clean Channels ever heard. Soundwise there is just one general rule: Never push that scoopy thing buttons in the Distortion channels. Thats really all you need to know about the amp. Great video Kyle!
Thanks Kyle. I remember bands during the Nu-Metal age were crazy for this amp. Glad I have my JVM 410h these days. That thing is a beast and love the crunch channel on that thing (or even the clean on crunch). These still seem like decent amps.
Hell yeah, Kyle! My first “real half stack” was a TSL60 with 1960a cab about 20 years ago. I really didn’t know what I was doing as far as dialing in a good tone, but I still loved it! I foolishly decided that I wanted a combo amp and I think I traded it i for something stupid like a Fender Hot Rod Deville or something like that. I don’t even remember exactly what I traded it for, but I remember missing the Marshall.
I had this amp for about five years ( 2001-2006) and honestly I didn't gel with it. The clean channel is great, high pristine clean and when pushed gives a classic vintage tone that's very usable. The one I had didn't pair well with overdrive pedals on channel one. I tried several pedals and the noise floor hit the bottom, nothing but hiss and extremely loud hum. Now that I think back, it might have had a micro-phonic tube in it somewhere but be cautious. The crunch channel is okay! It gives you that mid-gain dad rock tone with ease. This was my favorite of the drive channels which is ironic for me because I love high gain. The lead channel is most disappointing overall. The tone wasn't the worst but the overall feel & texture is very inhibited. Liquid legato leads where hard to pull off & overall feel is very resistant and lacks sustain. The problem isn't that the amp doesn't have enough gain, it's more about how the amp is voiced. It just lacks mojo. I paired this with a 1960A cab loaded with G12T 75s (stock). I never had pedals in the loop so I can't comment on that. When I plugged my head into another cab my friend had, I remember thinking "this is much better" so the issue could have been my cab. I eventually sold it after trying several other amps, one of which was a JCM 2000 DSL100 and remember thinking "why didn't I buy this instead". The reputation of this amp is well deserved in my opinion. I caution you to try before you buy.😕
was the first amp i bought for my studio. Got it for the versatility and used it for 5 years recording bands. Always just sat in the mix nicely. I have that same Mesa 4x12 too. Great combo.
I have two TSL 100's that I toured extensively with for the past 12 years. Love them great amps. They are work horses and I always felt good with them cranked behind me.
I had a JCM2000 TSL for almost 10 years. I got it with a 1960 vintage cab for $800 from a friend who needed money. I sold it to another friend a few years ago and he gigs with it all the time and everyone tells him how great it sounds. I didn't know until now people didn't like it.
You enjoy the second channel because with less saturation, you get higher dynamics. You always trade one for the other. Finding the good tone is a question of balance between both.
The TSL 60W was my first Marshall a few years ago, I play skate and pop punk so with the deep switch on and an overdrive it worked out nicely for the tone I wanted. I currently have a 2000 DSL 100 (but it's out of commission right now) and a JCM 900 High Gain Dual Reverb 50w with 6L6 tubes and the 2000 really gives my the tones I want because of the EL34 tubes and that deep switch, I run it with a Wampler Triumph and 👌

I used it for 10 years The crunch channel goes in the JCM 800 territory, though not quite matching the clarity and definition of the JCM 800. The clean channel is really big, round and overall very usable too. The Lead channel I didn't enjoy. I used it almost exclusively in the crunch channel with a boost if needed. In the end I A/B compared it with a SC20h Studio (Mini JCM800) and I preferred the bit more note definition on the JCM800. But the biggest reason to switch to the SC20h was the weight! Hauling this monster of an amp around is not for the wimpy :)
When I joined my first band back in 2004 I bought a half stack because my crappy combo amp wouldn’t cut it and this is the exact amp I got! I played it for years until I sold it and bought a triple X and a guitar lol. Thanks for the flashback bro, great video.
I've never had any problems with mine. I changed the pre amp tubes for desired sound until I found the right tone. It will rip your head off now. I had a Mesa triple rectifier and I still stick to the tsl
The tsl 100 is my favorite marshall. My first halfstack was a 4100 over a 1960A that i played unboosted in a metal band for years. The 4100 is very underated. I had the jvm410h thru a 1960A for a couple of years. Its also a great amp, but i missed the tsl the whole time. I played a DSL 100 through 4x12 greenbacks,between the 4100 and the tsl, and absolutely hated it! The DSL i had just farted most of the time and just sounded generally aweful. I have never lpreferred the 800s like every other person on the planet.
(Personally) in my experience Marshall sounds the best through a Marshall cab rather than mesa. Cool content just found your channel! Makes me wanna do videos!
My amp sounds so much different from how this sounds in this video. But I put KT77 and have a mix of Tungsol and JJ8803 preamps tubes going through a 2x12 Orange. Never had a problem with it sounding thin, this thing is a monster
It's crazy the amount of love/hate the JCM 2000 gets. Pro guitarists range from absolutely hating them (I don't get it) to them being one of their all time favorites. The JCM 2000 100 watt DSL head was my first new head that I have ever bought. I tried that thing out at the music store about a half dozen times before I bought it and have koved it ever since. There are a few other heads that i like better, but their price tags come with a huge hit. Without having to pay double the price, this will be my go to amp unless something significantly better comes along at the same price.
I have a number of Marshall amps in my collection, a mini jubilee, Jcm2000 DSL 40, Haze 40 and a JCM900 DR 50 watt. I really like the 900 and put it up there with the jubilee. It sounds great in rehearsals and has a lot more gain than needed on the lead channel running it a 6 out of 20 then boosting with a pedal. I find the 2000 to extremely dark and muffled sounding in the lead channels though the green boosted is nice 80’s sound. Also I was at a metal/punk festival the other weekend and the vast majority of bands had 900 dual reverbs in the back line and all sounded great.
@@stallionstudios yep it was the Slamdunk festival, most bands I saw that day were either using 900’s (which I’m sure were a rented and shared backline, as in previous years there was a Kerry King signature 800 in heavy rotation and use) or EVH 5150’s. I was also at Nofx at the same venue the next day and again most of the supports had 900’s
I bought mine used for 600€. its a great amp and served me well for many years. Great Clean Sounds also when pushed, very good Crunch Channel, very versatile Amp, that Footswitch is great. I never used the reverb much and I think it sounded much better on the Celestion V30 compared to the Celestion G12. I only was not happy with the Lead Channel and active EMGs on my Guitar. It sounded best with my Gibson LP and SG. As I recently switched to Orange, it is not used anymore. I am selling mine for 500€ now.
I used to have a TSL 60 - thin Is about the furthest word from how I’d describe its tone. I sold it because it wasn’t tight enough with high gain lol. You might say it was too thick lol
I bought this amp like 4 years ago. I use it with a Carl Martin plexitone single channel through the clean channel and it sounds just PERFECT. Warm and punchy!
Crank it up and that amp is an absolute Monster! I had a TSL 2000 for about 8 years and wish i never sold it 😢. Used it for Nu Metal and Thrash. I like it with a 1960A cab. sounds great with passive or active pickups too
My friends TSL 60 combo sounded absolutely horrible! My early 70's Superleads were crystal clear compared to his extremely dull sounding amp. Different power and preamp tubes did not help his amp at all. Totally honest, no bs...I mean dead, dead, dead sounding. My 900 SLX 100 watt sounds equally as good as my 70's Superleads for a different tube overdrive color!
I played my tsl 60 head and cab along side my friends 70s super lead and yes the clarity and sound of the super lead is special and magical I believe. Kinda bummed me out. But I do like my tsl regardless.
I played one of these many years ago through a 4X12 with Greenbacks and a parametric eq and Sonic Stomp in the effects loop with a POS $200 dollar Epiphone w/a Dimebucker in it. It sounded phenomenal.
Still deciding between one of these or a Mesa tremoverb. Tremoverb seems like the obvious winner but I keep getting pulled back towards the TSL! Being a 3rd of the price helps a bit 😂
DSL or TSL all the way! Just check the revision of the board and if it needs attention. You can get great deals, especially if you’re willing to deal with one that needs a new PCP. I’ll give you a few more reasons. Way easier to dial in than a Mesa, IMO. Beyond the PCB issues, these are easier to work on than your general Mesa channel switching amp. With the sale of Marshall, these Made in England amps are only going to go up in value. Lastly, it’s a fucking Marshall! It looks cooler (IMO) and has the legacy to back up its aesthetic. Even the non music playing public respects and knows the name.

I have a jcm 2000 with new board, and some other reliability fixes. It has classic tone ot transformer and choke. It does the job for everything. It has to have a boost though for tight metal.
My JCM 900 High Gain Dual Reverb 50w with a Wampler Triumph sounds good for skate and pop punk, my JCM 2000 DSL 100 has been out of commission for a bit so I haven't had a chance to try that combo yet
A lot of these amps get a bad rap for weird reasons. The 900 because of the diode clipping (although everyone loves the Jubilee) and I think this one got a bad reputatation simply because it has so many knobs. I've seen people complain about all the controls on Mesas too. Don't go to tgp before you try an amp. Use your ears & go from there. If it sounds good, it is good.
Owned many a DSL over the years, lots of low end. The TSL here obviously has more upper mid range than the DSL to my ears. Definitely looking to purchase a TSL.
i played one of these ... loved the lead channel ... dindt like the middle channel as much but these are underapreciated amps... and if you live in europe they are sooooo cheap used
Yeah I have one of these in a combo amp I had it all biased scoped out haven't played it in 7 years even if I did play it I'm going to have to bust it out thanks for the video cuz I know I can take my neighbors to another planet or hopefully not me to another Planet you know the kind with steel bars
I've tried a JCM200 DSL401 combo many times that was laying around at rehearsal space I practiced in, didn't like it at all. Maybe it was because the speaker was shit. Now I wanna track down a TSL and try it with a good speaker!
The comment about the "crunch" channel having alot more lows/a fuller sound actually is true for the DSL, for those who don't already know this. I've noticed that on my DSL 50, the classic gain and ultra-gain channels have their own seperate voicings rather than just a different level of drive/saturation. A boosted rhythm tone on the crunch will sound much more FAT while the OD 1 is much tighter which really works well with low tunings. (OD 1 is my secret weapon for 8-string tones) If you crank the crunch gain and boost it with the deep switch engaged you get this amazing nu-metal/grunge tone you don't get from many amps. I also really like the Mid Shift on the ultra gain as it seems to be very similar to the contour control on a Marshall Valvestate. I tested this by running my vs100 fx send into the DSL 50 return and got almost the exact same sound as using the mid shift. The JCM 2000 secretly has a Valvestate preamp with the mid-shift feature, which the valvestate is also secretly made to sound like a Mesa Mark iii/Mark IV. The JCM 2000 is an absolute beast and ultimately more versatile than people really know.
I didn't like the TSL or DSL mainly because there was a latency in the switching, that was a deal breaker. There are some good tones is them but I could never understand Marshall's thinking on a lot of their amps. And they actually reissued the 900 series???
Do you have any opinions on the current production DSL100? I think people also kinda crap on these amps just because theyre not a 1:1 recreation of the classics and theyre modernized. Kinda like when fans say the new singer of a band sucks simply because theyre not the original one

I was hesitant, because they seemed to have a bit of a bad reputation. But hell was I wrong. This was the PERFECT MARSHALL sound for me. The cleans are unbelievable, the crunch is just how I like it and the Lead channel had more than I needed, but so good. Two independent fx loops, I couldn’t be happier.
I had a similar situation about 2 years ago, but with a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 50. I bought it for the cab but it has become my favorite amp (even over my JVM 410 Satriani model and my EVH EL-34)! I was worried about the bias drift issue I heard about, but no issues whatsoever. I would like if all channels/modes were footswitchable, which got me looking into the TSL.

@mariodriessen9740 Well hopefully you have one that doesn't have the issue with conductive boards, because it will begin burning power tubes, and the repair isn't cheap. It's a great sounding amp with serious design flaws.
i am a punkrock guitarist from germany and i came across a TSL 100 for sale in february this year. i bought it for 560€ ($613 US), which included a full check-up by an amp tech plus a full set of spare preamp and power tubes. i have absolutely no complaints about it, i'm playing unboosted with no effects and what i like the most is the fact that it has this special roughness and spikyness to it that lets this amp come out even next to a very well distorted bass.
yet it is true that many amps of the first production years have heat problems which cause the tube board to break and become conductive. this is not only a possible threat to your health and life, it also makes the amp buzz and hum even with your guitar volume turned off. marshall revisioned this model in 2004 or 2005 with new tube boards, so if you want to buy one make sure that you are buying either one of the late productions or one that has been revisioned by a professional tech.

You'll know if you have that problem if it starts eating power tubes. It causes bias runaway.

I got a TSL 100 brand new with the cab in 2001 - 2002. I played and toured + rehearsals exclusively with that amp from 2002 until 2009 (Gibson SG - no boost, on the Crunch Channel for Punk/Hardcore), every week + bad treatments on the road, and it never failed, always delivered the guts. And it had rough times!
I loved this amp, and I still have it to this day!
Bought mine around the same time, had it 20 years before finally moving it on. Such a workhorse, it just needs some decent volume to come alive. Always wanted to try the mods the guys from Rosetta did to theirs because they absolutely punished their TSLs live and they sounded huge.

I’ve had a few amps, tube, valvestate, and solid state over the last couple of years and my tsl100 is the one I’ve kept gravitating back to and is definitely the keeper out of all of them.
Also, along with an od in the front as a boost, I was most blown away when adding an EQ pedal in the effects loop which I would recommend on any amp with the effects loop option.

I picked up a TSL60 head for $400 a couple years ago. I loved it so much, I bought a JCM2000 DSL50 head a week later! The deep switch gives it some huge balls!!!... but the tone shift mode doesn't float my boat. Love them or hate them, the JCM2000's will become a classic and keep going up in price just like the JCM900's did.
Same with the Vintage Modern line. Very under appreciated for what they are, a pre jumpered JTM45 with a master volume and built in boosts. Incredible amps, but they didn’t sell well enough. I’m just mad at how rare they seem to be now.
Hi Kyle, Just FYI. I have the same amp and I love it. I was watching you toggle the Deep Switch on and off when using the crunch channel. There was no difference in sound because if you look to the right of the reverb control, the Deep switch, Presence, FX Mix and Reverb are assigned to the Clean channel. The Crunch and the Lead channel share the upper controls. Look to the right of the Reverb, it's written. Keep up the great work!

I use the walrus audio agës overdrive too!! Modes three and four are where I live. I personally pump mids and cut a little bass and treble. It also makes shelving for bass later in recording easier.
The lead channel is thin, it is designed to cut through the band mix for your lead tone. I rarely use the lead channel for crunch tones, but it can be done. If you want to make the lead channel more beefy, boost the bass, cut the mids, the treble and presence to taste. Then just turn the channel volume back up to get unity gain. Also the tone shift, can be useful for getting a completely different tone on either channel from this beast. Once you engage the tone shift, rebuild the tone from scratch. Tone shift, is very useful for recording tones, that sit well in the mix. Have fun!
Hey so what about the crunch channel? Do you use it for Rythm guitar? Is it better? What if I want a crunch and then go full blasting sound? Should I use a booster? Another overdrive to push the amp?
The crunch channel is excellent and can be used for leads and rythms. I use three different overdives, when i use a TSL live. You can mix and match the overdrives or stack them to get the tones you are looking for. Let me make something clear so no one misunderstands me, there is nothing wrong with the lead channels voicing. Its voicing serves a purpose. I just had to chime in, because there are alot of TSL haters out there. For me, the TSL is Money in the Bank! @@robertgolfetto
Gigging with this amp right now. Doing everything from Sugarloaf and Cream to Royal Blood and other more modern heavier tones. This amp was one I hated when it came out as well, but now it’s doing exactly what I want it too. Going through a Bogner 2x12, and using a DD7 in the FX loop. Sounds great! When I tried it originally, I wasn’t as good at using the amp to its full potential, and I think it must’ve had that deep switch in. I just remember I was on there for 2 mins and I had enough. Avoided them…..but the situation right now is I’m using my friends TSL and it’s working for me, but I also don’t EQ it like other amps, it has a lot of highs and midrange, so yeah….getting better at EQ’ing and using tube amps to hit full pot I’ll.

I bought one of these on a whim cause it was cheap not expecting anything great and was actually kinda blown away. Definitely one of my favourite amps I currently own. They do have an overheating problem that did eventually cost me quite a bit cause it damaged the amp, but I still decided to fix it and keep it.

I’ve owned this amp for about 5 years. I inherited it from a friend who passed away. In the beginning I didn’t like the sound of the amp and it sat for around two years. I couldn’t sell it because of the sentimental value. While I was waiting for a replacement set of tubes for my Budda Superdrive 45 I dusted my TSL100 off and fired it up. It’s very easy to make this amp sound like a glorified metal zone but if you leave the tone switch off, deep switch in, set to the crunch channel with a boost in front it comes to life. The clean is amazing and the crunch channel reminds me of my 800. I can get modern metal to 80’s trash and I don’t ever use the lead channel at this point. It was a very under rated amp for awhile but prices have been increasing in the last two years.
I have this amp for 15 years now. The crunch channel with gain on 9 and a hard boost (ts or sd with max level and a bit of gain) does metal very, very well! Using it this way, you still have the lead channel, with its own volume control, for actual leads.
The amp works best with Marshall Celestion Vintage and/or Celestion Vintage 30 speakers.
The deep switch is horrible on lower volumes. Makes the amp very boomy and flubby. At home, max the bass on the crunch channel, without the deep switch. In a band setting at higher volume, you can use the deep switch, but then you must lower the bass knob a bit.
Tone shift is horrible. Do not use it.
The lower power amp setting butchers the tone of the amp. Just avoid it.
Last month I finally discovered how the fx loop works without killing volume + tone. The loop only works with buffered pedals which can take line level signals. If you can, set pedal to "kill dry" and level on pedal to max. Use the fx mix knob from parallel loop to mix as little as possible in. This way you can only use 1 pedal (unless you make a parallel loop on your board), but it actually works.
Used a TSL through a 1960TV for a couple of gigs in the mid 2000’s, sounded huge and I wasn’t even boosting it. Great, great amps but I do prefer my current JVM.
Yeah I love my JVM 410. Everything I need for metal and rock in one amp pretty well. I use fender amps for blues since I like that thick saturated drive sound with a tube screamer (or a nice clean jazz/funk tone). Other than that the marshal does everything I want it do.

I love my TSL. They’re great sounding amps. But there should’ve been a class action over so many of the jcm2000 boards becoming conductive. I still love Marshalls but I can’t pretend they didn’t totally dodge a liability bullet and it sucks that consumers had to just eat it with the defective PCBs. I put a rev20 board in mine so the bias is fine now but they should be giving out rev20 boards for free instead of them being 200 bucks. So not only did Marshall not have to deal with a class action, but get to profit off the sale of functional boards that shouldn’t need to exist for amps they already sold for a profit.
My JCM 2000 a dude sold me cheap last year with a cabinet. It needed a PCB board when I bought it. But my tech Dude fixed it up right. 🤘

I've had one of these for years. I wasn't a fan of Marshall before it got dumped in my lap. I got too good of a deal to pass up, and my plan was to just turn it quick and buy something I actually wanted. Once I got home and was testing everything, I decided to keep it. These things shred. It seems to be Marshall's effort to make something that would sit next to the 5150s and Mesa that were gaining popularity in the 90s. At least that's the feeling I get playing in it. I have very similar thoughts of the amp, as you stated here. Stay belligerent!
Elliot Easton used one in 2019 during the Cars Rock n Roll hall of fame performance. He could have any amp he wanted but chose this one.
He played what they had for him because it was a Marshall JCM. It's not like they were trying to get him to play out of some strange, outlier amp.
I have the 60 watt version of this amp head and it roars through my JCM900 1960 Cab with G12-HT75s.. can’t wait to watch the video man! I’ve been thinking about them with v30’s so can’t wait!
Great vid Kyle. I’ve had the TSL100 for years and love it to bits. Always sounded wicked through a standard 1960a (un-boosted), but now smashing it through an orange 2x12 with a boost for more of a metal tone. The crunch channel is absolutely my fave. Sounds awesome.
Well, I caved and just bought a 2011 TSL100 to pair with my JVM410H. Revisited your video has me more stoked about getting another, so thanks! The first one from ‘99 was rougher than advertised and I figured get rid of it while it still worked.

I would leave the JCM900 out of the discussion. Especially the SLX version. I put KT66's in the power section and it absolutely killed. Sure the Dual Reverb version kinda sucked but, the others are great amps. I used my SLX for many years and multiple bands. They are also the only version of the 900 line to use actual preamp tube gain and not diode clipping.
The MK3 does as well. The diodes are only doing something if the gain sensitivity is above zero
Own a JCM900 High Gain Dual Reverb stack love it...owned the TSL100 head ,hated that amp...maybe it was me but just did not vibe with it at all
I know absolutely nothing about this amp. This is the most I’ve learned about this particular model of Marshall. I’m thinking it’s a little dark sounding but definitely workable! I dig it!
Sounds awesome! I don't know if I would have paid the $1,999 (~$3,500 with inflation taken into account) for a brand new one in 1998, but considering how cheap you can get them now I'd say it's a no-brainer.
Yeah I see them for 1200 CAD these days. Still happy with my JVM410 purchase. Barely used paid 2K CAD for it.

Without a doubt the best of the last original designs from Marshall. I guess that's why it has the longest lasting production run out of all the Marshall amps!
they were £1000-1200 ish (about $1200-1500) in the UK when they were released, so really not too bad over here. To put in perspective a 5150 block was a similar price, and Mesa stuff here would be like 2k for a recto. I guess a lot of it is Import duty.
Engls here are similarly priced , where as I understand in the US they are really expensive?

It's undoubtedly true, what you said about people rejecting and misunderstanding newer models, but the 900 is kind of its own exceptional case.
See, they made a mistake. They saw that the 800s were being well received, but they also found out that everyone was setting the gain fairly low and putting overdrive pedals in front to push them.
The 900 was supposed to be a solution to that, and they literally put a whole solid state front end, including silicone diodes in a clipping circuit, into the new, more complete, 900 models. It was impossible to have control over that pedal when it wasn't a separate thing from the amp, and the kind of compression and clipping that happened just didn't sound or feel like what everyone was expecting. Never mind if you had no idea that this had even been done, so you tried to back off on the gain and then push it up front with a pedal the way you would with any other Marshall. They even did a little bit of diode clipping trickery with a couple 800 models, and those particular models are nowhere near as well liked. Marshall just needs to stop doing that.
There is absolutely no doubt about the TLS being a great amplifier. Unfortunately not only the early models have their technical issues. If you love your TSL100 get a decent technician and let him perform some preventive stuff to it. Bias Drift, Speaker output grounding and heater trace reinforcement. I did this to my TSL when it still was under Warranty and i never had any issue whatsoever.
This amp has one of the best sounding Clean Channels ever heard.
Soundwise there is just one general rule: Never push that scoopy thing buttons in the Distortion channels. Thats really all you need to know about the amp.

My first “real half stack” was a TSL60 with 1960a cab about 20 years ago. I really didn’t know what I was doing as far as dialing in a good tone, but I still loved it! I foolishly decided that I wanted a combo amp and I think I traded it i for something stupid like a Fender Hot Rod Deville or something like that. I don’t even remember exactly what I traded it for, but I remember missing the Marshall.
I had this amp for about five years ( 2001-2006) and honestly I didn't gel with it. The clean channel is great, high pristine clean and when pushed gives a classic vintage tone that's very usable. The one I had didn't pair well with overdrive pedals on channel one. I tried several pedals and the noise floor hit the bottom, nothing but hiss and extremely loud hum. Now that I think back, it might have had a micro-phonic tube in it somewhere but be cautious. The crunch channel is okay! It gives you that mid-gain dad rock tone with ease. This was my favorite of the drive channels which is ironic for me because I love high gain. The lead channel is most disappointing overall. The tone wasn't the worst but the overall feel & texture is very inhibited. Liquid legato leads where hard to pull off & overall feel is very resistant and lacks sustain. The problem isn't that the amp doesn't have enough gain, it's more about how the amp is voiced. It just lacks mojo.
I paired this with a 1960A cab loaded with G12T 75s (stock). I never had pedals in the loop so I can't comment on that. When I plugged my head into another cab my friend had, I remember thinking "this is much better" so the issue could have been my cab. I eventually sold it after trying several other amps, one of which was a JCM 2000 DSL100 and remember thinking "why didn't I buy this instead". The reputation of this amp is well deserved in my opinion. I caution you to try before you buy.😕

was the first amp i bought for my studio. Got it for the versatility and used it for 5 years recording bands. Always just sat in the mix nicely. I have that same Mesa 4x12 too. Great combo.
I have two TSL 100's that I toured extensively with for the past 12 years. Love them great amps. They are work horses and I always felt good with them cranked behind me.
I had a JCM2000 TSL for almost 10 years. I got it with a 1960 vintage cab for $800 from a friend who needed money. I sold it to another friend a few years ago and he gigs with it all the time and everyone tells him how great it sounds. I didn't know until now people didn't like it.
You enjoy the second channel because with less saturation, you get higher dynamics. You always trade one for the other. Finding the good tone is a question of balance between both.
The TSL 60W was my first Marshall a few years ago, I play skate and pop punk so with the deep switch on and an overdrive it worked out nicely for the tone I wanted. I currently have a 2000 DSL 100 (but it's out of commission right now) and a JCM 900 High Gain Dual Reverb 50w with 6L6 tubes and the 2000 really gives my the tones I want because of the EL34 tubes and that deep switch, I run it with a Wampler Triumph and 👌

The crunch channel goes in the JCM 800 territory, though not quite matching the clarity and definition of the JCM 800.
The clean channel is really big, round and overall very usable too.
The Lead channel I didn't enjoy.
I used it almost exclusively in the crunch channel with a boost if needed. In the end I A/B compared it with a SC20h Studio (Mini JCM800) and I preferred the bit more note definition on the JCM800.
But the biggest reason to switch to the SC20h was the weight! Hauling this monster of an amp around is not for the wimpy :)
When I joined my first band back in 2004 I bought a half stack because my crappy combo amp wouldn’t cut it and this is the exact amp I got! I played it for years until I sold it and bought a triple X and a guitar lol. Thanks for the flashback bro, great video.

The Mass of the Fermenting Dregs do use a JCM900 or the JCM2000 with a Strat and pedals like the EQD Hoof, and they sound great.

I've never had any problems with mine. I changed the pre amp tubes for desired sound until I found the right tone. It will rip your head off now. I had a Mesa triple rectifier and I still stick to the tsl

The tsl 100 is my favorite marshall. My first halfstack was a 4100 over a 1960A that i played unboosted in a metal band for years. The 4100 is very underated. I had the jvm410h thru a 1960A for a couple of years. Its also a great amp, but i missed the tsl the whole time.
I played a DSL 100 through 4x12 greenbacks,between the 4100 and the tsl, and absolutely hated it! The DSL i had just farted most of the time and just sounded generally aweful.
I have never lpreferred the 800s like every other person on the planet.
(Personally) in my experience Marshall sounds the best through a Marshall cab rather than mesa. Cool content just found your channel! Makes me wanna do videos!
My amp sounds so much different from how this sounds in this video. But I put KT77 and have a mix of Tungsol and JJ8803 preamps tubes going through a 2x12 Orange. Never had a problem with it sounding thin, this thing is a monster
It's crazy the amount of love/hate the JCM 2000 gets. Pro guitarists range from absolutely hating them (I don't get it) to them being one of their all time favorites. The JCM 2000 100 watt DSL head was my first new head that I have ever bought. I tried that thing out at the music store about a half dozen times before I bought it and have koved it ever since. There are a few other heads that i like better, but their price tags come with a huge hit. Without having to pay double the price, this will be my go to amp unless something significantly better comes along at the same price.
I have a number of Marshall amps in my collection, a mini jubilee, Jcm2000 DSL 40, Haze 40 and a JCM900 DR 50 watt. I really like the 900 and put it up there with the jubilee. It sounds great in rehearsals and has a lot more gain than needed on the lead channel running it a 6 out of 20 then boosting with a pedal. I find the 2000 to extremely dark and muffled sounding in the lead channels though the green boosted is nice 80’s sound.
Also I was at a metal/punk festival the other weekend and the vast majority of bands had 900 dual reverbs in the back line and all sounded great.
Interesting, thats cool to see that at a metal/punk show. I run a JVM410H which does everything I need and then some.
@@stallionstudios yep it was the Slamdunk festival, most bands I saw that day were either using 900’s (which I’m sure were a rented and shared backline, as in previous years there was a Kerry King signature 800 in heavy rotation and use) or EVH 5150’s.
I was also at Nofx at the same venue the next day and again most of the supports had 900’s

I bought mine used for 600€. its a great amp and served me well for many years. Great Clean Sounds also when pushed, very good Crunch Channel, very versatile Amp, that Footswitch is great. I never used the reverb much and I think it sounded much better on the Celestion V30 compared to the Celestion G12. I only was not happy with the Lead Channel and active EMGs on my Guitar. It sounded best with my Gibson LP and SG. As I recently switched to Orange, it is not used anymore. I am selling mine for 500€ now.
The clean channel, with the deep switch on, probably my favorite clean tone of all time. Sad I just sold mine.

Bought one used back in 2012. I've enjoyed it more than my dads 80s JCM800. But I obviously love both. Especially with a TS9 as a boost.

I used to have a TSL 60 - thin Is about the furthest word from how I’d describe its tone. I sold it because it wasn’t tight enough with high gain lol. You might say it was too thick lol

I bought this amp like 4 years ago. I use it with a Carl Martin plexitone single channel through the clean channel and it sounds just PERFECT. Warm and punchy!

I hated my DSL50 initially due to the excessive fizz. Then I removed the treble bleed capacitor and threw some KT77s in it. Now it breathes fire.

I remember NuMetal was exactly where Marshall was targeting this amp to along with hard rock having bands like 3 Doors Down and so forth use them.
My friends TSL 60 combo sounded absolutely horrible! My early 70's Superleads were crystal clear compared to his extremely dull sounding amp. Different power and preamp tubes did not help his amp at all. Totally honest, no bs...I mean dead, dead, dead sounding. My 900 SLX 100 watt sounds equally as good as my 70's Superleads for a different tube overdrive color!
I played my tsl 60 head and cab along side my friends 70s super lead and yes the clarity and sound of the super lead is special and magical I believe. Kinda bummed me out. But I do like my tsl regardless.
I played one of these many years ago through a 4X12 with Greenbacks and a parametric eq and Sonic Stomp in the effects loop with a POS $200 dollar Epiphone w/a Dimebucker in it. It sounded phenomenal.

Still deciding between one of these or a Mesa tremoverb. Tremoverb seems like the obvious winner but I keep getting pulled back towards the TSL! Being a 3rd of the price helps a bit 😂
DSL or TSL all the way! Just check the revision of the board and if it needs attention. You can get great deals, especially if you’re willing to deal with one that needs a new PCP.
I’ll give you a few more reasons.
Way easier to dial in than a Mesa, IMO.
Beyond the PCB issues, these are easier to work on than your general Mesa channel switching amp.
With the sale of Marshall, these Made in England amps are only going to go up in value.
Lastly, it’s a fucking Marshall! It looks cooler (IMO) and has the legacy to back up its aesthetic. Even the non music playing public respects and knows the name.

Just listened to this compared to your DSL20h video. This is a lot darker and less fizzy, much prefer this vs the newer model.
I just got my Atla last week and for the life of me I don't understand why Marshall didn't go this route.
I have a jcm 2000 with new board, and some other reliability fixes. It has classic tone ot transformer and choke. It does the job for everything. It has to have a boost though for tight metal.
My JCM 900 High Gain Dual Reverb 50w with a Wampler Triumph sounds good for skate and pop punk, my JCM 2000 DSL 100 has been out of commission for a bit so I haven't had a chance to try that combo yet
I tried a TSL when I had a DSL and 6505 and it felt thin and lacked aggression

A lot of these amps get a bad rap for weird reasons. The 900 because of the diode clipping (although everyone loves the Jubilee) and I think this one got a bad reputatation simply because it has so many knobs. I've seen people complain about all the controls on Mesas too. Don't go to tgp before you try an amp. Use your ears & go from there. If it sounds good, it is good.
Owned many a DSL over the years, lots of low end. The TSL here obviously has more upper mid range than the DSL to my ears. Definitely looking to purchase a TSL.
This was my first real amp. Bought the 2x12" combo, lol! Sold it in 2003 and got a Rev G 2-channel Dual Rectifier and never looked back.
i played one of these ... loved the lead channel ... dindt like the middle channel as much but these are underapreciated amps... and if you live in europe they are sooooo cheap used

I had a TSL100 head and TSL 602 . I ended up loving them and i miss them a lot but i understand why so many gave up on them.
I used to have a JCM 900 Mk III and loved that amp. Wish I still had it.
Yeah I have one of these in a combo amp I had it all biased scoped out haven't played it in 7 years even if I did play it I'm going to have to bust it out thanks for the video cuz I know I can take my neighbors to another planet or hopefully not me to another Planet you know the kind with steel bars

I've tried a JCM200 DSL401 combo many times that was laying around at rehearsal space I practiced in, didn't like it at all. Maybe it was because the speaker was shit.
Now I wanna track down a TSL and try it with a good speaker!
A tsl60 was my first amp, think it was from the first year…It absolutely came to life with some nos tubes…Damn, need to get it fixed
The comment about the "crunch" channel having alot more lows/a fuller sound actually is true for the DSL, for those who don't already know this.
I've noticed that on my DSL 50, the classic gain and ultra-gain channels have their own seperate voicings rather than just a different level of drive/saturation. A boosted rhythm tone on the crunch will sound much more FAT while the OD 1 is much tighter which really works well with low tunings. (OD 1 is my secret weapon for 8-string tones) If you crank the crunch gain and boost it with the deep switch engaged you get this amazing nu-metal/grunge tone you don't get from many amps.
I also really like the Mid Shift on the ultra gain as it seems to be very similar to the contour control on a Marshall Valvestate. I tested this by running my vs100 fx send into the DSL 50 return and got almost the exact same sound as using the mid shift. The JCM 2000 secretly has a Valvestate preamp with the mid-shift feature, which the valvestate is also secretly made to sound like a Mesa Mark iii/Mark IV.
The JCM 2000 is an absolute beast and ultimately more versatile than people really know.
I love my TSL100, i did a demo on it and it sounded absolutely crushing.
I just got a tsl 100 for $150. All I had to do was change out the shot transformer. Worth it
I didn't like the TSL or DSL mainly because there was a latency in the switching, that was a deal breaker. There are some good tones is them but I could never understand Marshall's thinking on a lot of their amps. And they actually reissued the 900 series???
Do you have any opinions on the current production DSL100? I think people also kinda crap on these amps just because theyre not a 1:1 recreation of the classics and theyre modernized. Kinda like when fans say the new singer of a band sucks simply because theyre not the original one
