    "If you play like a lamb, it will sound bah. If you play like a lion it will roar". Nice one.
    "It will clean up" -- plays clean tone that those annoying types on forums think is hi-gain. Ear of the beholder stuff. I prefer my cleans with a bit of sizzle on them too, e.g., Jimmy rolling his volume back in the Song Remains The Same film. Not fully clean. The only really clean tone I like is the Twin Reverb. Lush, smooth tone that kind of invites you to play.

    Alot of hate for the Jcm2000 series is because they were manufactured with bad PCB boards pre-2004. The Rev.20 board is the replacement that fixes the issues. For those that did not know.

    • @tikhoav3315
      @tikhoav3315 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Correct.
      Alternatively, revision < 20 boards can be retrofitted with a kit from Dr.Tube to fix the meltdown problem.
      I bought a tsl after watching Euge's video and modded it with just a soldering iron and some patience.
      Killer amp, especially if you throw kt77s into it.

    WHY would you do so?? The whole idea with the 2203/04 is that it's a good basis for your pedals and or modding. The 2205/2210 and later are basically just that - a Marshall mod developed for Michael Schenker

    Hi, 1st of all, great simple yet full of information video.
    I've already seen it a few months ago... yet I'm back for other details.
    I'm getting bored with losing my tone on gigs due to volume problems. When I do it, I lose the sound that I've worked for hours. I know there's stuff to keep your amp (or amps) in a nice EQ + GAIN + VOL whatever settings, and you just control the output... without losing 'the' sound. Can anyone tell me what to get for this purpose? Not a rack :-)
    Thx for any help.

    I was serious about getting one, but me and my buddy Tinnitus found out it has no master volume, right? Fuck, 100w tube is a lot, I never crank my dsl40c above 4 on band practice.
    On the other hand it should be possible to run volume pedal or eq pedal with volume control in fx loop and tame this beast I guess, but then again if you're going to drive a Lambo only 100km/h, you don't really need one.

    • @EugeValovirta230V

      All 3 channels have preamp volume (labeled as gain) and master volume 👌. A great amp 🤟.
      JCM800 is a one channel amp with preamp volume and master volume.
      But it’s like all tube amps, and especially with Marshalls, the sweet spot with master volume to really make the amps alive, is quite loud.

    Hi Euge, I plan getting a TSL 100 but I'm a bit concerned about the volume. I already own a 15 watt Head and I'm playing it through a 4x12 Marshall cab with V30. I know that the TSL can be reduced to ~25watts. would you say there is a massive difference in loudness between a 15 watt and a 25 watt amp? On the 15 watt amp i already own, i can crank the master to around 9o'clock before it's getting too loud for me.

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven’t played with 15 or 25 watt amps so I don’t have any idea but that a 100w Marshall is LOUD 😎.

    • @jroobz
      @jroobz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      100w is 4x as loud as 10w if that helps. I think the difference in loudness from 15 to 25 watts is a couple of dB.

    Have you tried the TSL60? I'm interested in one as your reviews are superb. I have a Silver Jubilee owned a DSL and own have a few Mesa amps. I want something more raw but I always heard bad things about the TSL when they were around. Why was that? They seem great

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Can’t be sure but I think I used one a few times on some tours / shows with Shining back in the day. It probably did the job ’cos otherwise I’d remember that 😎.
      I think they’re great amps and most often the reason for a bad sound is not in the gear but in the mirror. And it’s always easier to blame the gear than to admit that it’s actually the playing that sucks. A good player will sound good no matter the gear & a bad player will sound bad no matter the gear.

  • @LS67NOVA
    @LS67NOVA ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Euge, besides the absolute truth bomb at 0:50 , how much do you think other things besides the amp settings make your specific tone sound so good .....such as IR, active pickups, speakers, etc?

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of it comes from the player (hands) but obviously if you have a right amp for you with the right cab etc. and you know what you want it’ll be even better. One example: when I played through my friend Alexi Laiho’s (RIP) rig I didn’t sound anything like him but just me and when he played through my rig, and sometimes with my guitar, surprisingly he didn’t sound anything like me but just himself.

    • @LS67NOVA
      @LS67NOVA ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EugeValovirta230V very interesting!! Any chance you want to sell your hands? Haha. Thanks for the reply though. I'm chasing tone and yours is exactly what I'd love to have. Next would be Marc Diglio from XYZ. Different era an genre of music compared to yours, but still one of my favorite tones. Thanks to watching your videos, I changed over to a JCM2000 (50 watt though) but I think my cabinet is the next issue....1990s 1960 AV (Vintage) that was an extremely rare build from Marshall because it came stock with 8 ohm Marshall G12 Vintage Celestian speakers. I can't find another one like it. I even contacted Marshall directly and it appears it is a one-off type cabinet that they made during a transition from their JCM 800 cabinets.

      @EugeValovirta230V  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool! Yeah tubes gets hot and they should. That means they’re working 👍😎. That’s why there is the went. I’ve removed the back plate on my amps that I have in my rack so they’d get air and not overheat ’cos I crank the amps and they’re really hot. Physically and soundwise 😊🔥.

    I love all your videos and amp comparisons. I'm about to purchase a TSL100 JCM2000 amp. I really love Zakk's sound too and would like to replicate it. All my guitars are fitted out with EMG 85 81s. My question is what cab would you recommend using with the TSL100 from the following choices to get a close sound to that of Zakks.
    A mesa 4x12 loaded with V30s or the 1960A 4x12 cab which has G12T75 speakers?

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve never liked those G12T75 speakers but V30 & Greenbacks a lot.
      Ones sound isn’t much about the gear, it’s mainly about the playing. If you want to sound like Zakk you gotta play like him. I mean I sound like myself no matter the gear. Different gear just brings a bit different flavours but it still sounds just like me. The same with Zakk or pretty much any player.

    • @mitch2jzrz
      @mitch2jzrz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the advice! And you're right, a lot of the sound comes down to ones playing. Agree 100% there!
      Also I was leaning towards the Mesa too with the V30. Only thing holding me back.. and this may not be true but this Mesa cab is the oversized version (4X12 RECTO STANDARD OS SLANT CABINET) and I've read a lot of comments online with guitarists saying the OS Mesa cabs have too much bass, a bit muddy and are less tight with high gain. Is this true for oversized cabs?

    Hey Man !!!
    I love your channel. And you’re playing. And you’ve given me a good insight as to the JCM 2000. I’ve been looking for a JCM 800 again for a while now. The ones I’ve found are WAY OVER PRICED!
    Back in 80s that’s all I used for my rock sound.
    Now I play in verity bands doing anything from shit kicking country to OZZY. Plus I got out of music for quite awhile, and made the mistake of selling most of my stage gear off, when I did.
    Now, I have two Fender Twin Tone Masters, for the county stuff, and with pedals, I can get a good 70s rock sound, but not the big sound for the Metal type music. I’ve recently bought a Marshall 1960 Lead Cabinet, with 30 watt Green Backs. Now all I need is a JCM 800, and I’ll pretty much be set for just about any sound I need.
    Do you know where I can find a head for about $1000. dollars. $1200. at the most..,
    Also, do you think I could get that same pedal boost sound with the Boss Dual Overdrive SD -2 ?
    Holla Back !

      @@hanashe4599 you may wish to contact eurotubes, they sell integrated quad kits for mesa amps which work in place of the 6l6s mesa jams into all their amps.
      Some combination of the el34 style tubes may bring you closer to the sound you're after.
      Ive got a dual rectifier with a kt88/kt66 quad, which sounds much beefier and 'gnashy' than when i run 6l6s in it.
      Keep in mind however, mesa will scowl so hard you'll feel it, should you put anything other than their brand of tubes in it. They certainly did when I told them of my recto...

      @@tikhoav3315 I appreciate it, but actually got a set complete set from Eurotube's. I end up switching tubes around with all my amps till I get a tone and feel I like. Right now the power tubes are JJ's and the preamp tubes in gain stages and the phase inverter are a mix of JJ's and Mesa tubes. Which gives the amp a much smoother, warmer tone to me. A JCM 800 it isn't. A Mesa Mark V it definitely is.

    Euge, very informative as usual.. that TSL really has been underappreciated.. I have a lead on a. Good price JCM2000 TSL 60.. is there a big difference or are we just punishing our ears less than the 100?

      Yes: more tubes, bigger transformers, bigger tone etc. There’s a reason 100 watt amps still dominate 😎. But there are exceptions: I like a 50 watt Plexi more than a 100 watt. Personal preferences.

      @EugeValovirta230V  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually know what cab/speakers/microphones it is but I’ve agreed not to reveal the info ’cos the idea is that people wouldn’t have any presumptions but just use their ears when choosing the IRs which makes total sense. I did that too so I didn’t have the info until recently. That and the other IRs are awesome and that’s the most important thing 👍😎.
      I’ve used the (not the actual one but same) cab / speaker / mics on a few albums I’ve done and so has many other rock / metal players 😉.
      On the RED WOLF album I just used the IR ’cos there was no need to use the ”real” stuff ’cos I can’t really tell the difference.

      Even though I’ve had (many) full stacks many times live I’ve only used the bottom cab / cabs; I just like how it sounds and that I can hear other instruments as well. And I don’t need to hear my guitar at 120 db at ear level 😎.

      Anywhere from a 40 to 100 watt tube head. You're only using about 40 to 60 watts of it by the time you're PA is miced up and everything otherwise you drowned everybody out so it doesn't matter from 40 Watts to 20 wwatts is enough

    I’m talking myself into a TSL 100, well, mostly the impressive tones you get from that amazing beast! Do you think it would hit the “sweet spot” through an attenuator? My JVM210H didn’t seem to benefit from the attenuator so haven’t tried the JVM410H with it yet.

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yeah that’s the idea with attenuators; hit the sweet spot with master (usually loud as F) and then tame it down according to taste / need and so that the speakers move air (in my case it’s pretty loud - definitely not bedroom levels) 😎.
      The attenuator must be good obviously so it doesn’t change the tone. My favourite is St. Rock’s React:IR / Cab Attenuator 👌.
