2024 Toyota C-HR hybrid review

  • It's called C-HR because those letters, CHR, stand for Coupe High Rider.
    So should it come as a surprise that the new-generation 2024 Toyota C-HR isn't like other SUVs?
    It has a swoopy roofline, an unpleasant back seat experience, and pricing that is way higher than the first-gen model.
    But the second-generation CHR goes hybrid only (and Australia misses out on the PHEV plug-in hybrid). And it has more features, technology and safety than before.
    Are there reasons to buy this instead of a Corolla Cross, Yaris Cross, Lexus LBX, Cupra Formentor, Honda HR-V, Honda ZR-V or any other small SUV? Sure. But watch and you'll see the reasons I wouldn't choose it myself.

    Honest review Matt. Well done. My first impressions are a mixed bag. Looks like they've tried (unsuccessfully) to address some of the old model's shortcomings, like the weird shaped claustrophobic rear glass area. But the proportions are still wrong, especially the full side-on view @5.30. I like that the rear door handles are back in their proper place, and the bigger engines. But that two tone paint scheme is just naff. And those Toyota prices are ridiculous (even with all the tech). We're looking to upgrade an aging ASX but we'll give this a wide miss.

    Great reviews, I find I keep coming back to your comparisons and critique. It would be great if you could include 0-100 acceleration figures during the drive portion of your review. For me this helps me understand the drive feel a little better. For me I would be hard pressed to spend over $50K for anything over 8 seconds. Modern cars are pushing the limits on performance and efficiency. Models that dont address this price, performance and efficiency are basically not trying hard enough….for my money at least anyway.

  • @buncha5651

    Great review, Matt. I'll say it as you can't. Toyota are playing with their trouser tepee with the pricing. Also, they keep running out of paint, plus i like a bit of animal in my vehicle interior. 😊

  • @philross1680
    @philross1680 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Another great and very informative video Matt.
    I’m sure the CHR like all Toyotas are well built and reliable vehicles.
    However the pricing in my opinion is way to high on all models of the CHR and agree you should seriously consider the alternatives.
    If you are spending that sort of money on a car and desperately want Toyota the Corolla Cross or even an entry level RAV4 is by far far better economical option for all round practicality and drivability.
    Having said that I’m sure Toyota will undoubtedly still sell loads of CHR’s to buyers who throw everything else to the wind except how the car looks.
    One thing I noted was that the colour scheme on the test car is that it reminded me of a Sydney 1956 FE Holden Taxi Cab which brought a little smile to my face as I feel certain that down the track there will be a lot of new model CHR’s joining the UBER fleet 😅.

    I find the design very quirky and not to my taste. The money asked seems too much for what you get across all versions. A car that leaves you feeling cramped inside is less than ideal despite good seats. The back seat area looks absolutely awful. Buy the Cupra Born instead. The EV/Hybrid range is miserable (in my humble view) and Toyota would do well to import the plug-in version. Toyota makes some very good cars. This one would never be my choice. An excellent review, and I agree with your Verdict.

    Just bought one- The GR sport is a surprisingly good drive and the missus loves the way it looks. The ONLY competition was Kona premium hev{not far off the money, FWD and gutless} and Honda or Subaru{ok if your blind}. Question- Who wants a plug-in Hybrid? Why would you want to put fuel in it and then plug it in. That's why Toyota doesn't do plug in cause nobody wants it. In My view its a way for manufacturers to be lazy and feel good about their products{yes you Ford}.
