yeah it can be reused the blocks will keep growing mushrooms after the first initial harvest although mushrooms will not grow forever as the block will eventually lose its nutrients for mushrooms to survive

Perlite holds air. You want to use vermiculite to hold water. Have you considered wet newspaper or sponges? Those would be cheaper options to slow release water
If you wanted to use the bucket method but a little sand pail in your kitchen, would any of the spores from the mushroom be harmful to yourself or others if you wanted to do oyster mushrooms? Or would there be a bad smell with it?
Yes, oyster mushrooms release a tremendous amount of spores, and these can easily cause health issues when inhaled-even months after the mushrooms themselves are gone. If you’re wanting to grow oysters and you don’t have a dedicated grow room separate from your house and a respirator to use when harvesting, it would be better to do it outside in the open air.

I have some wbs grain that I inoculate with some agar, but I tried this for more than 2 months, and they never colonize the grain. I also tried with different grains and the same thing. what could be the cause? if someone could help me I will appreciate it. I know it's different from species to species. I have king oyster and the temp is 22-25 in general in my house
@@justinlangley9529 I have tried different techniques. the one with 24 h soak, 12h soak, and 1 h soak. at the 24 the grains turn into mush in about a week if they are not colonized. now I am doing the 1h with coffee in hot boiling water and they absorb the water pretty well, the mycelium from the agar activates, it makes that white puff but doesn't colonize them. after a week it basically dies or goes back to normal. if you think that they are not hydrated good, I will change my tek.
@@FreshCapMushrooms I made a copy from a store mushroom, so I think I couldn't get a better genetic. the sad thing for me is, that a friend of mine did the exact same thing as me, and it works for him, we have the same grain, the same copy of genetic, everything the same.

It feels like mushroom growing requires either a lot of plastic or a lot of energy or a lot of both and so unless you’re doing it at scale it can’t really be considered environmentally friendly. Is that true from your experience?
I have a question. Wouldn't colonization be quicker if the area was flat instead of dense like a jar? With a thinner surface area the mycelium should spread sooner correct?
Hey there, Biologist here, who already has a small sterile lab setup for iv propagation at home. i did mushrooms in a box kit years ago, i liked it! now i have 6 acres and room for my too many projects, i think i will get back into it ! Great info Thank you ! Also, can you use other grains as substrates , ie corn or wheat ? i already have thousands of pounds of those !
Hi! Your vids are amazing, Im a total newbie and going through the initial shock from the onslaught of methods out there. I have a question for anyone out there. In another vid of yours you made brf cakes. They are cool but I def want a bigger at home harvest. Would it be possible to just buy liquid culture, makes some brf cakes and then bust those cakes up into a layered wood chip bucket like your oyster bucket video? Buying liquid culture is cheaper than buying grain spawn and Id have more fun doing that extra step. I really want to make my own spawn jars and have perpetual growth but my brain starts collapsing when I see petri dishes lol. Long story short can I transfer brf cakes into a wood chip bucket for a bigger harvest?
Too high chance of contamination, not to mention that it won't spread out the way you imagine. What you'd probably end up with is a wood chip bucket with small pockets of mushroom growths, barely larger than if you only left them alone in the cakes. Cost, I'd imagine, wouldn't really be a factor, since unless you are a member of the mole civilization, who grow mushrooms the way we grow wheat, the monetary value of the end result would far outweigh the initial investment. I'd say do both and figure which one works best for you. Once you made the cakes and all, it's probably not advisable to shred them, put them in wood chips and hope for the best. Wood chips work best with grain spawn, because you can spread them out evenly without damaging the culture, and cultured grain is very resistant to contamination, something wood chips really like to do.
I have a hypothesis. While having a lot of extra flour or grain in the substrate (that is not the straw or wood) is not considered necessary, the extra readily available nutrients might be able to help the mycelia grow, spread, and colonize faster. Don't know this, just a hypothesis.
Hi, I recently started growing Lion's Mane, I germinated my spores with aquaculture technique and then after mycelium growth I inoculated some jars with wheat grain substrate, my quiestion is: does wheat grain works for growing this type of mushrooms? It's been a week since I inoculated and I'm seeing very little to no develop of mycelium (T= 77f to 82f) I watch your grain spawn preparation video, the only thing a did different was leaving the grain just for 12 hours under water and I didnt simmer it on hot water, hope you can help me out. I'll really appreciate your comments. Thanks
You should never inoculate liquid cultures with spores. Spores are almost never clean(axenic), as they usually grown open air. You should rather use agar. Wheat, rye, barley, milo/sorghum, millet, WBS, any whole grains work. Never heard of a species outside of cordyceps where the mushroom species was grain dependent. Without pictures, pretty hard to diagnose. Join Mushroom Growing group on FB
@@dracolusus thanks, I'll take note on that, but since I'm barely starting and didn't have much resources I opted for a jar with destile water and some sugar, but definitely I will try to use the agar as I progress, I did put everything on a pressure cooker for 40min to an hour. I will joinf the fb group, thanks again
Ive got a sycamore tree which I can cut for logs and chip the smaller branches. Would that be ok for growing oysters or shitake with the processes youve already explained.
I'm sure you've been asked this question many times. Instead of a pressure canner, can you sterilize grain in a hot water bath canner but perhaps for a longer period of time?
Shortcut I’ve done fine without the hole on the bottom. The ones on the side are important but you don’t even need to do that. Just keep the lid slightly open
I got a question on of Tek you said the vermiculite would filter so no tape is needed over hole during colonization is this true or when xo I need to tape it

Hello , are you a mushroom lover and wishing to purchase some?
@ mycovine ...
Hi, are you familiar with Hiricium novaezealandiae ? Is this similar with standard Lion’s Mane in terms of health benefits?
it is very dry and hot in North Texas. I can deal with the humidity, but does high temperature affecting the growth of mushroom if I keep them outside in the patio?
Where do you find mushroom spawn?
I have some wbs grain that I inoculate with some agar, but I tried this for more than 2 months, and they never colonize the grain. I also tried with different grains and the same thing. what could be the cause? if someone could help me I will appreciate it. I know it's different from species to species. I have king oyster and the temp is 22-25 in general in my house
Could be a million things, but usually poor strain (or dead strain?), incomplete sterilization (but you would see contamination) or too dry
The same thing happened to me while trying to grow Laricifomes officinalis from liquid culture in a grain spawn bag in a closet. The mycelium started to grow but then senesced after about a week. I suspect it wasn’t getting enough fresh air exchange (FAE) in the closet. I’m going to try reinoculating the bag and leaving it out in the open in my house and see what happens.
here's several suggestions worth trying
choose the best variety - there are lots available.
grow them in the best environment - some such as oyster muchrooms like cool humid conditions and can be put outside (I learned these and the reasons they work on gregs mushroom grower site )

Would like to see progress on that kit later. Does the fruiting block not leak water into the box when you put it back, which would make it grow mold?
can you break the mushroom spawn apart? then put it in the 5 gallon bucket? the mushroom kit thing...
Hey there,
Biologist here, who already has a small sterile lab setup for iv propagation at home. Really would like to try out some mushroom growing, but I can't find any proper overview about which species are easy to grow on hardwood with traditional methods and which need much more special attention. Any content here, that I'm missing? Would make a great video! :)
Power Pressure Cooker XL or Insta Pots work great for easy sterilization ...
hi sir. do cold pasteurization have lower yield compared to sterilize straw?thank you so much. keep safe sir.
Don't know for sure, but in my experience you can have a better yield with Lime Pasteurisatinon
@@FreshCapMushrooms hi sir. is it different from cold pasteurization? I saw your video. you did not sterilize it. sir do you have ha facebook? kan i message you? I like to use your method of cold pasteurization. you just add lime and wait for 18 to 24 hrs. maybe its cost efficient. thank you so much sir.
Another great video! Thanks again freshcap you guys are awesome.
i did mushrooms in a box kit years ago, i liked it! now i have 6 acres and room for my too many projects, i think i will get back into it ! Great info Thank you ! Also, can you use other grains as substrates , ie corn or wheat ? i already have thousands of pounds of those !
Obsessed with that cow painting!
Hey! I recognize you from TikTok! I love that mushroom on the wall. Glad I found you on youtube. Im going to get started growing mushrooms!
Can someone give me a link to the glasses he is showing in the video?
by glas I mean jar
Hi, is Barley, red beans and green beans good substitutes for grain spawn? Thanks,
Can you keep using the substrate to produce mushrooms? Is there a way to keep growing the mushrooms consistently?
Yes, as long as you keep adding a bit of the fully colonized substrate to new substrate it will keep colonizing/growing. 👍🏽
I have a hypothesis.
While having a lot of extra flour or grain in the substrate (that is not the straw or wood) is not considered necessary, the extra readily available nutrients might be able to help the mycelia grow, spread, and colonize faster.
Don't know this, just a hypothesis.
what about using a candle to sterilize your needles?
Thank you so much! This is so helpful and really great information. You are a bleesing! Keep it up

What can be used as substrate for oyster mushrooms? Are coconut husk and sawdust valid options? And how do you sterilize the substrate?
Ive got a sycamore tree which I can cut for logs and chip the smaller branches. Would that be ok for growing oysters or shitake with the processes youve already explained.
mushrooms are absolutely bad ass organisms
Could you just use an Instant Pot to sterilize your mushroom substrate? What is the temperature required to kill off unwanted contaminants?
I'm sure you've been asked this question many times. Instead of a pressure canner, can you sterilize grain in a hot water bath canner but perhaps for a longer period of time?
You have the best demonstrations, video quality and content on the the web. I know I’ve watched them all. 🙏
i really dont like cutting holes through the bottom,it's a potential mess. Is it neceserry ?
I have always done it with the holes. My feelings are it is not necessary though, you could certainly try without it
Shortcut I’ve done fine without the hole on the bottom. The ones on the side are important but you don’t even need to do that. Just keep the lid slightly open
How did you preserve the big mushroom on the wall?
im trying the kit tysm for the idea
Do you need to sterilize the plastic of a fruiting block when using premade grain spawn?
The best mushroom growing video I have found!
I got a question on of Tek you said the vermiculite would filter so no tape is needed over hole during colonization is this true or when xo I need to tape it
Such a fun-guy in isolation 😂😂
I have some horses, so would it be possible to continually add sterile horse manure with used straw so i could continually produce mushrooms from that? And what would ne the best mushroom to do that?
Hello, would I be able to use an instant pot of I already have one or would I need the stovetop pressure cooker or canner? Great info in the video!
@André Manchester got one.
That art piece behind you is sweeet
thank you!! I love it so mush haha
@@FreshCapMushrooms good one tony
Would an instant pot work the same as the pressurized canner to be able to sterilize the grain?
Can you use a cotton ball instead of Pillow Stufing?
Can you break down that and put it into the bucket with wood chips?
