    I am not mechanically inclined, and I tend to not do things with mowers, etc., properly. I just saw this video. My new Honda went about 8 hours, and I realize that is too much. I will change this oil asap. Thank you.

    Great tip on the 30min. break-in oil. The 5 hour oil change is a must. I can't tell you how many people never change out the initial oil. I think they have the mentality of if their car can go 3000k miles surely the lawnmower/snowblower can go hundreds of hours. Then they can't understand when they have engine problems.

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mimi Mumu once the engine is broken-in I change the oil every 25 hours or once a year depending on the amount of runtime of that season.

      @@smallblock412was thinking about changing the oil about 25 hrs but I changed my mind. I do it at 15 hrs, considering that the oil will darken quickly at the 10 hrs mark. I prefer mineral engine oils, they're cheap and a few oil change will ensure that there are no metal debris in the engine, oil is cheap, engines aren't.

    Most of my retail career was spent at an Ace Hardware store with a large power equipment sales and service department. We sold lots of Hondas, some years more than others...anywhere from 100 to 200 Honda walks annually, and I assembled plenty of them. Honda walks come with a 12 ounce bottle of Honda 10w-30 oil, and that oil is a clear oil with a hint of brown color to it. Running a new lawn mower engine for five hours will turn that oil dark grey/brown, so, there are plenty of contaminants from the manufacture process. Its almost surprising, but factual. So, follow the maintenance recommendations of the manufacturer to have a good ownership experience. Keeping the engine oil clean and at the "full" mark, along with a clean air filter and fresh, stabilized unleaded fuel, will give you trouble-free performance and many years of service. No maintenance, or lack of maintenance, are engine killers.

    When I change the oil in my power equipment, I add BG MOA. If the crankcase takes 13 ounces of oil, I substitute 2 ounces of MOA for oil. It runs smoother and quieter. 11 ounces of Full Synthetic Oil and 2 ounces of MOA, a perfect mix. Oil comes out smoother that with full synthetic only. 3:30

    Initial/break-in oil changes are vital on any and every ICE!
    Now here's the kicker... in this case it's 12-13 oz's of oil so an oil change cost per your example (Walmart full synthetic appx: $20/5 qts) works out to appx: $1.50/oil change...at that price why not change it after every mow! 😜

    Enjoyed the video. A bit off topic but....Let's say you snagged a nice mower off a tree lawn, took it home and got it running after a few minutes of carb cleaning etc. I've been thinking about doing an immediate oil change and putting a couple of oz of Marvel Mystery Oil in the oil, and then the gas. Then use it maybe 5 more hours then changing the oil again. I'm betting the MMO would help clean a bunch of sludge out of the crank case. Thoughts????

After I change the oil, I leave that new oil sitting for five hours running alone or just sitting without it running before I use it or the first time? You should be fine! Change it out before the season gets going and you’ll be all set. I’ve seen people go several years before their mower quits on them.

    Wrong oil. That's for your car, which is water cooled. Lawn mower oil like Toro or Kawasaki or Amsoil small engine have Zinc which car oils do not have.

    I’ve owned my Honda mower for 10 years. I just changed the oil. 😂😂😂
    Doesn’t seem like it matters much. And this video is useless as it doesn’t show how to put oil back and make sure it’s correct.
