  • More of a technical review, not an unboxing. Honda has made lots of changes to their latest residential mowers: the HRN216 sold in many big box stores. This review for 2023 walks you through all the latest and greatest changes, both the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly. If you haven't seen theses mowers yet in your shop, rest assured you will soon.
    00:00 I'm not Blondie
    00:45 Mower deck and oil filler tube
    01:34 Fuel filler and top shroud
    04:03 Control cables
    04:33 Carburetor and airbox
    05:33 Wheels
    07:28 Transmission
    07:57 Handle bar storage
    08:43 Carburetor gaskets
    Here are the tools I like and use most often:
    Magnetic spark plug socket set: amzn.to/3CzmpvO
    Tachometer: amzn.to/3sHibiH
    Vessel Megadora JIS screwdriver set: amzn.to/363RFqO
    Channellock Bent Needle-nose pliers: amzn.to/3I5DbnA
    Long 1/4 Quick-connect Torx Driver Bits: amzn.to/3HUNgnm
    Spark Tester: amzn.to/3CxW2qi
    OTC Leak-down Test Kit: amzn.to/3CyUhJn
    Compression Tester: amzn.to/3IWd6sp
    Wear your safety glasses, or you'll shoot your eye out. Try on some gloves. Take off that spark plug boot. Clean your room. Open the windows, those fumes are nasty. Just 'cause I do it, don't think it's the end all, be all solution. There's plenty more ideas out there, I can't take responsibility if you slice off a few fingers after watching my videos. And don't just pour that toxic stuff down the sewer or in the ditch, dispose of waste responsibly. Just be safe, OK?

      To The Lawnmower Lady: I was impressed that you mentioned that the cover came off with a single JIS screw and that you used a Vessel screwdriver which is made to JIS standards as they are the company that pioneered the standard. Most people don't realize that this is not a Phillips head at all. So, thanks for letting literally thousands of people be exposed to this fact which is not commonly known. Also, many have a tough time removing the hold down screws on Honda automobile rotors. They strip out easily because most people don't know that they are built to JIS standards (now known as DIN 5260 standards which replaced JIS standards years ago). I made the switch and haven't looked back since. JIS/DIN 5260 can replace Phillips but Phillips cannot replace JIS/DIN 5260. Vessel is a top brand as is Wera. I will never buy another Phillips screwdriver again and have given most of my Phillips screwdrivers away already. Thanks for the great content.

      @@TheLawnmowerLady Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Really enjoyed you going the extra step with the good, the bad, and the ugly motiff. I wish I knew about them 48 years ago when I got my first Honda motorbike. I had no idea what those dimples on the screwhead meant. I have stripped and drilled out my fair share of Honda automobile rotor screws in my day because I didn't know about JIS at the time. I happened to be looking on TH-cam in anticipation of changing out the brakes on my friend's Mazda 6 when I ran across a short video in which the man explained why people such as myself were having difficulty with the rotor screws. Believe me, I paid attention. I studied your video and learned quite a bit as my brother is thinking of buying this same lawn mower. Kudos for all of your hard work.

      Tony M , well I had an older MTD I bought used years ago. The engine was fine but the hardware was junk, so bought a new HRN216. I realize the Honda is a bagger and self-propelled, but it's big and heavy, I think too much for a smaller lawn. I cannot imagine how heavy your old one must have been.

      You're right mr Tommy. Toro has been a premium brand over the years. They did outsource some of their lower end residential mowers to MTD a while back. The HRN216 GCV170 engine series replaced the HRR216 GCV160 engine series. The HRX is the next tier up with GCV200 engine. Just bought the HRN216VKA recently and very happy with it. Mowers shouldn't be stored outside exposed to the weather; if there is no garage or shed, it should at least be kept covered. Do the minimal maintenance on them with oil and filter changes, blade sharpening, and use STA-BIL in the gas, and they'll run well for many years. The Honda replaced a 15 year old Craftsman with B&S engine that still runs OK with very minimal maintenance (made by Husqvarna for Sears). Showing its age though and parts - other than the B&S engine - are mostly discontinued. Wouldn't buy a new Craftsman though (junk). IMO, the Honda HRN and HRX are among the best residential gas mowers.

    I love this mower, maintain it, and it will last for years and years. I luckily have the ideal storage situation and keep up on my maintenance. As far as the wheels go, I'm sure they'll last just as long as most of the residential ones will, maybe longer. I've always popped my wheels off and spray a little lithium grease on them anyway once a year. Rust ain't much of an issue with proper storage and maintaining the deck. Usually treat any rust right away (havn't had any), cutting wet grass clean... it off right after and run it to dry it out, and spraying some fluid film on the underside in those wet situations help.

    Sometimes after I do extensive research while shopping for a new lawn mower. I get so overwhelmed and confused. When I think I found one that I can afford and use. I'll also find informative vids like yours that change my mind lol. It's a good thing and I thank you for exposing some things that matter to me! Because the manufacture or big box stores won't show it. What I'm shopping for is a Self Propel Rear Wheel Drive, gas, 22" or 21" cut, rubber wheels preferably, strong engine for less than a 1/2 acre lot, mulcher, bagger, variable speed preferably, and NOT that personal pace thingy Toro has on their mowers. That just doesn't make any sense or look right to me. I have an old Craftsman 190cc, RWD, 7.00 torque, model #ended in74541. Bagger torn and cant get a replacement anywhere. And the self propel works half the time. This thing was beast for 11yrs. Now everything is so damn expensive!!

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear ya! If you can still find the HRX models, I should consider that. With the exception of the engine itself (it is the newer GCV 170/200 version like this mower) it maintains most of the better characteristics the the HRN line omitted for cost savings. Ball bearing wheels, better control cables, better drive belt baffle to keep debris from fouling the belt, lightweight yet durable poly deck, etc. Even though Honda will cease producing push mowers this year (maybe next, I forget), they are a far superior machine, and should have plentiful parts supplies well into the future. Hope this helps. Cheers!

    My coworkers say the same thing. I feel bad because I recommend the new HRN over Toro TO SOON! The more and more I used this $600 over engineered machine, I noticed an uneven cut pattern after mowing, along with my coworkers plus MANY online reviews confirmed my same observations. "This lawn mower leaves several un-cut grass blades" same goes for the old HRR model, but not as noticeable. I called Honda customer support, and they recommend that I lower the deck and make shorter cutting swath. At this point I reverted back to mowing with my old HRR and put the HRN in timeout.

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly think they cut too many corners on this new model. There are some good things, but too many cost cutting IMO. ex: no baffles or guards for the belt travel. Thanks for watching.

      @dadsworkshopbykipplabrie7982 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree with you, I can tell you know your stuff. The new HRN is definitely more cost effective to manufacture and even with her new hiccups the HRN is still far more superior to your "Walmart Special" or any MTD rebrand product. I'm not a fan of the new single front and rear wheel axle adjustment but like you said Hondas plastic is pretty legit, and what I really dislike the most is new push rod engine design, Honda really set themselves apart with their signature "Overhead Cam" engine, I mean it had a freaking timing belt!!! @@dadsworkshopbykipplabrie7982 I’ll be interesting to see the insides of one of these newer GCV engines. No doubt, removing the timing belt mechanism accounted for a good deal of their parts reduction on this engine design. I’ve got three videos on this mower. All from the same owner, over about a six month period. The wheels are already wallowed out and wobbly on the front. The rears are not far beyond I suspect, even with that bushing in there. At least the HRR series still had bearings in the wheels.

No. The lack of bushings in the front wheels is irritating. But even a less than perfect Honda is still one heck of a great lawn mower. I still have my 11-year-old Husqvarna with Honda motor. Just replaced wheels, dust cover, blade adapter, belt, and blade. It's running real nice. But all of the parts are showing their age. Honda really made some great products. @TheLawnmowerLady  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Maybe mower might have been turned on its side the wrong way? White smoke is usually excess oil in the wrong places burning off, or over filled oil in the crankcase. Check the oil level, replace the air filter if it's saturated in oil. If you must get under the deck, it's best tilt the mower back on the handlebar. Worst case, turn the mower over with the air filter side up in the air, and the oil dipstick side towards the ground.

The HRX series also gets this similar revision of engine being the GCV200 with the HRN's GCV170. Both the GCV170 and GCV200 engines revert back to a pushrod design instead of the cam in head design of other GCV and the GSV engines. @@TheLawnmowerLady I'm talking about the HR21 and 21-5 original series of mowers from the late 70s early 80s.

      Ahhh, yes. I replaced one of those with this HR215 back in 2000. It was gifted to me from my Dad, and I unfortunately let the oil get too low. It overheated and seized. Not knowing then, what I know now, I would have fixed it. I regret replacing it.

    Wonder if an HRX wheel will fit on an HRN?

      @TheLawnmowerLady  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I knew. The front wheels are probably interchangeable, the rear ones, likely will have different drive gears. Thanks for watching.

    This was a educational and entertaining video Stella. Is Honda still making the HRX and the HRC series of mowers?

      Thanks Mr Bob! I’m not really sure. I’ve seen the HRX mowers on big bix store shelves. They might be left over back stock? Thanks for watching. Cheers!

    As far as the wheels not having bearing's is concerned the Chinese will probably come out with a knockoff version pretty soon. Let's just hope it has quality bearings. Then again if it becomes an issue or enough people complain about it Honda might address the issue as well. I've had a chance to use mine a few times now and really like the mower 😊

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interestingly, the bearing weren’t even quality bearings. Just the cheap bearings common on wheel barrows, etc. I can’t imagine they were saving more than a few cents per wheel. I appreciate you watching! Cheers!

    So those metal inserts on carb cover are gone? OK. My Subaru power washer 175 has studs. But the metal inserts are still there. And yep they do fall out

      They sort of waffle about on the commercial mowers, but this is the first I've seen on a residential mower. Thanks for watching!

    Biggest changes for me would be the engines are no longer OHC. no more timing belt. OHV. Crank is easily swapped, sump opens from the top. Studs on the carb mounts which you mentioned. makes life so easy. I'm surprised the mower needs a belt replacement already, they should last more than two years.

      The owner dropped the deck to its lowest setting, and treated it like a bush hog in the overgrown vines and seedlings in the back of his property. 🙄 Tremendous wear and tear in just a few hours time. Thanks for watching!
