    Did the first mow with mine this weekend, then an oil change to synthetic. A couple neat things you didn't mention, if you want to move the mower without the blades engaged, just push both handles without hitting the yellow button on the blade lever. And for cleaning up fall leaves, Honda recommends doing the Carolina squat, raise the front up a notch or 2 to keep from pushing the leaves around, which helps as you have the individual height adjusters.

    I have this exact model, and it's the same one in a previous video where I told you the engine was going out. I took it to a different service center (Honda) where they took it apart and found the engine SO badly damaged internally, they couldn't determine what failed. (Likely the other service center performed the recall incorrectly) They reported what they found to Honda who immediately sent out a brand new engine. 2 week turnaround, in the middle of mowing season, with a new engine AND a holiday in the middle? Not bad!

      The mower is roughly 1.5 seasons old. It was perfect throughout the first season, then came the recall, during which we're guessing they re-assembled the engine incorrectly. (Yours likely got all the updates during original assembly) This season is when things went "sideways." I was surprised at the amount of internal damage they told me they encountered, It still ran fine, but was using oil & smoking pretty badly. Keep the oil serviced in yours, & use ethanol free fuel (if you can find it) & it should go a long time. I agree with most of his review here. I do NOT engage the drive while circling trees. (It pushes easily enough) I often stuff the mower under one particular evergreen tree, but I've never knocked the air filter cover off. I've never even knocked it loose! It does get a little light on the front wheels when the catcher is really full, & being 2.5 bushels, the catcher can be a bit heavy when emptying. Keep in mind, you have a 5 year warranty, and even though they've stopped making the mower, they still make the parts so its all good!

    SO I bought one of these recently and just got around to perform the break in. I did what you said and ran it for 30mins. I dropped the oil into a glass jar, added new stuff and mowed for an hour. The new oil on the dipstick was nice and clean looking. Well, after a couple of beers BSing with my neighbor who is a heavy diesel mechanic, I showed him the jar. I asked why the hell the oil was so nasty black after just 30mins.... He explained to me that manufactures coat the internals with phosphorus and this aids in the break in process. I told him Honda recommends a 5hr break in and then an oil change. Giving this some more thought, dropping the oil after such a short 30 min break in period might not be the best recommendation. Granted it should break in eventually, but I think maybe something a little longer than 30mins might be a good idea. For what it's worth, I didn't see any metal in my 30minute oil. The very tiny sparkles is probably the phosphorus or zinc which give extra protection during this crucial period. Oh well, what's done is done. Maybe if 30mins is too short and 5hr is too long, perhaps something in the middle? Say run an hr or two on the provided oil and then drop it ...?

    I commented on the last Honda video saying I grabbed one of these on sale and I’ve gotten to mow with it about 10 times. It’s still the best mower I’ve ever owned and it’s not even close. I’m not the biggest fan of the drive system, it’s awkward and you have to teach yourself the best way to use it. The blade stop is by far my favorite feature I never knew I needed and I’ve basically retired my bag because it mulches so dang well

    My 11 year old HRX217HYA transmission finally went bad. Tried changing out the transmission fluid from a video I saw. I couldn't even get the input shaft to turn the output shaft. Plus, what a pain to take the mower apart. And the dread of putting it back together. But I found a Home Depot about 55 miles from me that still had these in stock, at $699, less than I paid years ago. Put it together this morning and plan on trying it out this afternoon. This was after much deliberation on getting a battery powered mower. I beat the heck out of this mower with the tree roots, potholes, etc. It owed me nothing.

    After I fixed the hydraulic fluid level on mine with a flush, refill and airbleed- it's a beast! All you need to do is steer! It's a late 2021 /early 2022 model.
    The only Honda problem that remains is the low-speed idle jet size. Someone needs to make a video showing which jet it is and how to make it ever so slightly larger...which will cure the 'surging during idle' (once warm) issue.

    I just bought one of these last weekend (6/29/24). I pulled it out of the box, unfolded the handle, put in the Honda oil, put in 3 week old non-ethanol gas, made sure the fuel valve was on, and tried to start it. Nothing. I checked to make sure the plug wire was on tight. Nothing. I pulled the plug out to see if I could see a spark while pulling the cord, nope. I brought it back to where I bought it and they are looking it over now. A buddy of mine bought a VYA from the same store the same day, and his worked flawlessly. I'm really disappointed, but this is usually what happens to me when I buy something big. At least my box had the green dot so I know the cam issue was repaired.

    I bought mine just before Memorial Day. The only issue I had with it is the valve cover leaked oil. The dealer fixed it under warranty.
    I just mowed for only the 5th time having changed the oil after the first and fourth mows. It puffs grey smoke for 20 seconds at initial startup and I can smell a hint of burning oil when I’m mowing. I’m assuming the rings are still bedding into the cylinder as it’s not overfilled. If it keeps going for too long I will take it in.
    Regarding the clutch lever. It isn’t only an on-off it is also variable speed up to the max set by the hydro lever. I feather the clutch lever when I need to move a little slower around obstacles but still have assist.
    It is definitely worth it to get this mower while still available.

    I now have 5.1 hours on my HRX217HYA. Overall I like it. It's huge though. It dwarfs my old troybilt push mower. Backing up kinda sucks on it so mowing tight areas suck with it but overall I like it. I still get random pieces of grass sticking up after I'm done mowing. Not sure what's up with that. I think it's the best option if you can't get a HRC model with the manual choke and GXV engine. Also I recommend the Honda side deck protection strips. They help a lot. Mine are already scraped up and they protected my plastic deck. And you need to clean under the rear flap. It hangs on to clippings and they need to be blown out.

    I am still confused. There is the brake lever and clutch lever with the yellow button. But no way to control the speed as you are mowing? You have to preset the speed using that orange lever? I ask this because the ones I have had you always control the speed by pressing a handle or lever and at times when the grass is tall you might have to press it more to get through the thick tall grass. But with this the speed is preset and you have to fiddle around that orange lever to change the speed?

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TechCrazy the brake lever with the yellow button is for the blade. You let go of that and the blade will stop spinning. The other bail is the drive bail. And you can adjust the orange lever on the fly for your speed. This is their older method of speed control but long lasting. 👍

      @@GarageGearThis is not the best description for speed control. The “speed shifter” sets the selected top speed desired for a given mowing condition. The handle is then pressed to provide infinite speed control up to maximum(fully depressed handle). Another way to describe its operation is you can set the “speed shifter” to maximum and depress the handle half way. The mower will then move at half the maximum speed. After careful consideration of this model's limited flaws, and after speaking with the local service center; I felt absolutely confident the HRX217HYA was worth purchasing. Finding one was a challenge. Limited supply at Acme Tool. $879. I did not hesitate to place the order. I'm anxious for the unboxing! performed prior to shipping, I presume. Having sold a previous Honda model several years ago (regrettably), the unboxing, initial oil change, and first mow was like a homecoming, honestly. Its idle is a bit rough (sputters a bit, though thankfully, it isn’t surging. I’ve always found Honda carbs to be sensitive for some reason); But under a load, it’s divine! Be sure to run ethanol-free fuel. A Honda will call you out on that every time. The mowing experience is predictably FIRST-CLASS. I do not have a single regret, and I fully intend to keep this mower long enough to become the fertilizer for the grass it continues to mow.
