I'm on mow #5 with mine purchased about a month ago, I have 1/4 acre yard that is almost golf course quality grass. This new one runs smoother than an older honda 160 powered snapper 22" I just sold. Most places are pushing electric, not for me. And yes, honda sells for good prices used.
@@mr.dcfitted8713 hey Mr. Dc a house a neighborhood over from me burned down because they were charging a battery that caught fire. That’s enough reason for me.
I bought mine from home depot 2 weeks ago. As far as I know all of the honda mowers home depot is currently selling have already had the recall done. Mine had the green dot, but I also checked the new serial number and it is not part of the recall as it was already fixed. Another tip, the box will look previously opened and retaped, also the flaps will not be glued together on top as it was opened for the recall.
Have a Troy Built self propelled mower with a Honda engine. 16 years old now. Brought it out yesterday from winter storage, put in new gas, one pull and it starts. Note, have used synthetic oil since day one, change the spark plug every three years and clean and grease the axles and sharpen the blade 2x per season as I have a large yard.
As a member of The Tribe, I bought a HRN 216 at Home Depot. Dot on the box. Check. Got it home. Slip Film, check. Oil check. Non ethanol gas. Pulled the cord. Nothing. My mower has a throttle set at off. Duh. Throttle up fired up. On the right side a yellow blade break. The mower starts and runs without pulling back the blade engagement bar. With mower running pressin down yellow button and pulling back the blades engage. This is more than I expected. It allows me to leave the mower running and open a Chanlink gate. With shutting the mower down. Thanks for the recommendation.
Got my hrx two years ago I don’t know if mine is recalled or not ain’t looking either . This thing is my pride and joy even if it locks up and breaks my wrist I will stay in my last day it’s my favorite mower I ever used . It just cuts my lawn perfectly
Just grabbed one of these today to go with my 2 year old HRX217HYA. I figure alternating between the two of them should easily last the rest of my useful mowing life. Ran the HRN once I got home and actually really impressed with it. Quite the upgrade from the old HRR216 I used to have and really not that big of a step down from the HRX with the hydro. Given that everything is going to throw away battery mowers, I figure might as well grab a spare while I still could, and I have slight concerns about support of the HRX composite deck 10 years down the line. Great video!
I'm wearing my Garage Gear tee shirt. Mowed the lawn. Changed the oil in my new Honda HRN at 30 minutes and again at 5 hours. All good. Thanks for the videos.
The only complaint I have is the vacuum! It doesn’t suck up leaves or debris very well. You have to make a couple of passes for it pick up. The front end plastic piece sticks out too much to cut corners. But other than that, it’s a good lawnmower!!
No green dot. No punched hole. I entered the serial number on Honda's "Recall and Update" web-page. When I hit submit, it reads: "There are currently no active recalls for your Power Equipment product." Please advise. BTW, thank you for your vids. I broke it in per your recommendations.
F/up: I called Honda with my SN. She entered into her database, then assured me my lawnmower was NOT included in the recall. She said this particular recall is very SN specific.
I've owned an HRX217 for now on nine years. Just this year, I had to replace an o-ring seal on the camshaft. It was a relatively easy repair, parts were very inexpensive. It has provided the most consistent, almost perfect grass cutting experience of any lawn mower I've ever used as a walk behind. If anyone is wondering about buying a Honda, just do it, following his advice on verifying the Honda recall verifications.
Thanks very helpful! I had the Home Depot crew get a box with a green dot from the top shelf as the one on the floor didn't have any. Wasn't going to take a risk after watching this video. Only used once, but we're very happy with it so far!
Just bought mine this weekend. I did the oil change after 30 minutes of run time. My goodness you were not kidding about the color change after thirty minutes and the amount of particulates floating in the oil. I was totally shocked. Glad I watch your video before purchasing. Had to part ways with my John Deere JX75 which was tough, but I am excited for the Honda! Thanks man for all of your useful advice in the garage.
@@GarageGear loved the mower. I wanted a stripe kit and they don’t seem to make them for John Deeres and I’m not very innovative haha. I know Big League Lawns makes them for the Hondas. Bottom line is I’m a sucker for some stripes.
I went out and bought the hrx 217 a few weeks ago. My last honda broke because I didn't catch the oil leak and it ate itself. Regardless, I asked the guy at HD what that green dot was for and he didn't know. I figured it was because they had checked it for cam shift issues! Home depot had a BUTT TON of the 216s for sale. Glad I got it.
Ive had an HRX for 18 years, It just had the rear axle assembly shear in two, I replaced the wheels about 5 years ago that's all I've ever done besides change the oil every couple years and sharper or replace the blades. I felt like I got my monies worth out of it so I gave it to a friends kid that likes to fix stuff and went and bought a new HRX this last weekend. I'm glade I did had no idea they where stopping selling them. The eclectic mowers I'm sure a good but they don't look like they will last 15+ years and Im sure the battery require replacement every 4 years or so.
I purchased a HRX217 17 years ago, got it professionally tuned up by the dealer at about year 10. Other than that I do yearly oil changes and sharpen the blades. My tires are getting bald and will be my next upgrade.
Thanks for the green dot advice, just picked this mower up a week ago and it did have the dot. Do you have any advice on a wheel upgrade for this mower? A set with bearings that aren't too expensive? Just curious on that. Great channel, I watch a lot of your content.
Hey Mike! Sounds like you’re set! I don’t have a better whee recommendation other than retreading those wheels. Appreciate the positive feedback my friend!
Hi JB and another great vid. Having owned 2 Honda walk-behinds I can honestly say there's just something about their build quality....power...ease of maintenance....longevity....reliability that puts them ahead of everything else on the market.
Have a 1/4 acre yard with a 10 yr. old HRX 217 still going strong. Bought a new HRX in December still new in the box that was recalled, not ready for battery yet.
Yesterday I bought the HRX at Home Depot for the price of the HRN model they made a mistake on the pricing at the shelf and they had to bite the bullet I love these kind of deals 😅
Just picked an HRX217HYA from HD yesterday in my area , HD website has little over 1400 in stock, last call to great mower . Memorial Day sale plus my veteran discount got a great deal . Thanks HD for honoring veterans year round !
I have 2 Honda mowers,HRN216(31 years old) and I loved it so much I purchased a new electric ⚡️ start HRX217. Didn’t need the new one,I just wanted an electric start (getting older and enjoying toys) the 30 year old one gave me ZERO problems,so I wanted to keep it in the family, and gave it to my son in law. Self-propelled works GREAT. 30 year old dude gets oil,air filters and spark plugs,AND SHARP BLADES… BOTH are plastic deck models. Hey JB 👍🏼
The HRX217 is still better than that. You have adjustable speed control and an actual engine throttle so you can let the engine idle while you change the bag. Years ago, throttles were standard on mowers. Now you just pull and it revs up to high speed already and that just can't be good on the engine, especially each time you have to stop the engine to change the mower bag. Another reason I love the HRX217 because of that blade stop feature so you only have to start your mower once and get your whole lawn mowed without ever having to stop the engine to empty the bag or to stop mowing to move something out of the way without the engine stopping.
My HRX 217 is so old I can’t remember when I bought it. Perhaps 12 years or more. Always use ethanol gas cause the ethanol-free is not available nearby. Only repair has been the clutch cable last year as it stretched too long to adjust any more. I live in Florida so I mow at least weekly for 9 months of the year. The battery gave up years ago but it starts on the first pull 99% of the time, even after winter storage. Sad to see Honda leaving the US walk-behind mower market. My advice: grab one while you can!
@@hawgbreath I bought a 2nd HRX217HYA mower earlier this month just to have another on hand even though my first HRX217HYA is less than 2 years old (which replaced a 13 year old Troybilt lawnmower that was ready to retire (engine started bogging down, burning oil even after regular oil changes and backfired occasionally when u went to start it up). Ive read reviews for all the other brands and types out there, and alot of them have flaws and I also noticed the Briggs and Straton engine isnt what it once was and having its issues too. Honda is just plain reliable and I am sad to see these guys pull out of the U.S. and the electric mowers are just something that I think if something real serious breaks, its a whole new mower period, so Im not about electric mowers. I feel like a lot of businesses now that sell mowers are more about profits than quality of their product, they are definitely not made like they used and they did away with the throttle control on a lot of them to be green friendly (rolls eyes) Im not about to go electric anytime soon at all, definitely wont see me driving, renting or owning an Electric Car either.
I have also noticed that it’s difficult to bog down my Honda 216. Meanwhile I have a Toro TimeMaster that bogs down pretty easy unless I open up the side chute. It’s like Honda is the better mulching mower & Toro is best when when you let the clippings fly!
I just bought an HRN216VKAA a few days ago from an equipment dealer. They installed the fix for the started before I picked it up. Traded my old Honda push mower for this one that has the benefit of self power drive, and it's great, just like my "old" one.
Just purchased this lawn mower after watching all of your videos regarding this mower. Big question I’m happy so far and noticed odd scratch marks on the engine casing? Is this normal someone called it casting flash? Is it normal on a new mower to see this?
Just bought one. Had the green dot and cuts beautifully. Only thing I don't like is the self propelled hand controls. I am sure I'll get used to it but still very happy with the purchase.
Thank you we just bought a brand new HRN today. Had the green sticker on the box per your advice. I just finished cutting the lawn. Worked great! 1st pull start. Glad I did not purchase the Toro. Used the mulch mode. No clumps or trash left behind. Honda rules!
@GarageGear I've called a few places and even been to several locations that sell HRN216s. I've noticed that every single one of them have cracks in the engine block, not normal casting. Every dealership that I informed was flabbergast that they never noticed. Does yours have a crack in your block?? I'm trying to find some that don't but its hard. I suspect this is how the cracks occurred: Honda rolled them off the line to test with the original cam shaft, which causes internal damage, but they don't notice until it gives them issues which then they replace the faulty cam shaft with the new one. However, at this point the integrity of the block is just gone.
@@98765432123456 hey my friend! I heard about this a few times and I think it’s how they are coming out of their mold when made. No issues to report from those who own them.
Hey @GarageGear (JB!?), I saw one of your videos on Honda mowers, I believe it was the HRN to16, and you mentioned an issue that caused them to run uneven or cut off. It was not the magneto that the mechanic turned upside down that corrected it. It was a part that you mentioned purchasing and replacing, and he provided a link to it. It looked to be may be an inch long, and about the diameter of a pencil, and was copper or brass and color. Can you help me out with what the part is and what the issue was? Thanks!
I have a 36 year old Honda HR194 lawnmower that still works like a tank. Aluminum deck. Only problem is it only cuts to a height of 3 inches. Is there a way to change tires to increase the cutting height to 4 inches? My bluegrass would like it.
Just bought mine today and mowed about .7 acres in an hour and 15 minutes which is much faster than my rider so far I love it. I was actually super surprised at how quite it is for a gas mower as well.
I bought my '23 Honda HRX217HYA because of the engine quality, but sadly, just 1/3 of the way through its second mowing season, the Honda GCV200 engine is eating itself. Anywhere from a little to a LOT of exhaust smoke, and obviously it's burning oil pretty aggressively. (It received a new camshaft through the recall, but I think that's unrelated) So my plan is to hopefully get through this second mowing season without it dying completely, then take it in for probably a new cylinder and piston. If it dies again though, I'll either go electric, or find a walk behind mower with Kawasaki power.
Decades long of making engine components for this newer mower engine and the older mower engines, all the sudden switching to ATVs it's like losing a piece of history of all those memories and the fun of making that perfect product
Not all HRN will have a green dot. I purchased from Home Depot in Oct 2024. Typed the SN# on Honda web site and it is ok, no green dot needed. It was not affected. 😄
I regret buying my 2022 Honda hrx217hya for the following reason: 1) my Honda hrr216vka I got in 2013 was fine. Should have kept it. 2) starting issue with mine no matter what. I changed the thermowax, changed gas and change spark. Doesn’t matter. Honda dealer said this is normal. Said if temperatures under 70 degrees it will not start first or second pull on these new Hondas. If it’s above it should. I can attest to this. Government regulation did something here as it is my first Honda power equipment that does not start first pull!
@@appleztooranges I’m not familiar with that term but this mower is probably about ten years old. When it happens I remove the air filter and use a stick to push the butterfly on the choke to unstick it and it will start right up.
As Home owner, this mower is no brainer. Price can be scared but dont worry, you will get "profit" for a while because you are doing the work. I recommend the bicycle thread for better user experience, doing work like walking on park. Maintenance is easy, a basic tool kit is all you need.
hello, I'm here again, while I was looking at Honda lawnmowers, I saw that leaking oil errors occur with several lawnmowers (not all of them), I don't know how common this is, but I'm very confused. problem with honda? does anyone know anything about this?
@@GarageGear I don't have such a problem, I'm still about to buy, I've only seen this problem with several people, that the oil leaks from the drum under the spark plug and some kind of Honda boton and I'm worried that maybe mine will have the same problem, is this problem common? From valve cover the oil leak
@@kwintystringshun814 oh ok sorry for the mix up. I’ve only seen this once on an older Honda engine on a pressure washer that wasn’t cared for very well. Those are the cheaper made Honda engines for those applications. On these mowers this is news to me.
Yo Garage Gear I bought a HRX yesterday & did the whole bottle pour in thing & when I checked the oil level after it was above the mushroom top thing on the dipstick I don’t see any writing that says full on it am I supposed to get it in between the lil xs at the bottom? Been a pain trying to slowly pump out a lil at a time.
Hey Johnny not exactly sure what the story is with your mower if you just bought it but I would dump out all the oil and refill it to the correct level with fresh oil.
@@GarageGear yeah I bought it new at HD idk why so much oil was still in it. Am I aiming for in between the cross X’s at the bottom of the dipstick for the oil level?
@@johnnytopside3702 yep you got it! When you put the dip stick in just rest it on the top. Don’t thread it down. Rest it, pull it out and check your level. That’s how to check it on a Honda mower nowadays.
I had one and really liked it but Honda couldn't make it to stand up like most new mowers. Cut quality is fantastic and love the mulch lever. I cant stand adding a mulch plug. I bought a Toro Recycler and works great and storage is a plus for me but I do miss the throttle option which is my favorite.
My lawn care business uses 90% honda commercial equipment. Here are my reasons why. 1) Quality in the commercial honda segment 2) longevity-lasts a really really really long time 3) maintenance is very very simple 4) built like a tank 5) no need to change batteries every 20-40 mins. Just fill with gas once and I'm good to go 6) much less risk of fire due to overheading which is batteries number 1 weakness heat
@GarageGear their was thee battery fire at thee Kentucky lawn equipment expo. It happened on a dewalt battery powered zero turn. If your looking for the video just type in battery powered zero turn fire at lawn expo. Should pop up. It takes at least 20x more water to put out a battery powered lawn mower fire then a convenient engine fire.
@GarageGear that's because when a battery burns it burns extremely hot. The best way unfortunately to put a battery fire out is dirt. Wipes out oxygen.
Imagine saying Honda mowers suck and outing yourself to everyone in the room you've never used one. Good vid. I use an HRX217 myself for my lawn care business and it's been absolute workhorse for 5 years with no signs of stopping, and we're talking 30+ hours of mowing per week during the Spring, Summer, and Fall.
The list of SN was flashed quickly in the video (awesome video BTW)...can you provide a link or copy of the total list of recalled Serial Numbers? Also, the punch mark...will it be obvious?
Hey Brent you can pause the video to check the list. The punch mark will be visible like it was in the picture shown. Are you buying a new or used one?
I picked up an HRN216 for I want to say $230 a few years ago, lightly used. It has been flawless and even though I have since picked up a riding mower I still enjoy mowing with my Honda as well if the weather is nice.
I went into a Honda dealer today just to test the waters, and the salesman told me he had not heard of any recalls. He also told me there was no need to change oil in the beginning like you showed in a video, and I just did not trust that guy. I just got the vibe that he was nothing but a seller trying to tell me what he thought I wanted to hear(which is always the opposite of what I want to hear). At least they have no issues ordering new gasoline lawnmowers from Honda in my country, so I'll check back in next season when I'm ready to purchase one. I'll just check that the version I get is ok before I buy it.
Bought my Honda HR214 in 1986. Replaced one cable and one wheel so far. Nothing else other than air filter, oil and spark plug. Cranks on the first pull except for the first start of the season, then it takes 3 or 4 tries. 😂
would you ever consider doing a camshaft replacement walkthrough video for one of these mowers? I know i could technically take it to a dealer to get it fixed but id like to see if i can do it first
I've had my Honda HRN216VKA since 2019 and had no issues for the past 5 years. Last weekend, the front wheel height adjuster snapped off. Because the HRN216 only has left side height adjuster, the whole front axle (44310-VR8-N00ZA) needs to be replaced. It's a $30 part, but still hard to find.
@@GarageGear Yes, I found part from an online retailer for $50. However, I cannot get the front plastic cover off due to two of the bolts won't come off. There is a nut with flat metal square piece which cuts into the plastic and cannot unloosen bolt. There is no way to get a tool in to grab hold of the nut to stop it from spinning. I now have a large paperweight.
Hey mate im a gardening contractor over in Australia. I have that exact mower. Just did a service on it a few hours ago. Been using it for 2 years. I still really like it. It is made in USA so unsure why it it wont be sold anymore to americans
@@GarageGear Yeah, swapping something that affects the climate of the planet over something that could be more hazardous in the short term. Lithium based batteries contain a number of toxic substances and aren't really all that recyclable. At least at the end of life an internal combustion engine is actually recyclable. Some will claim that the batteries are recyclable but wish-cycling is a little different than reality. Most of the precious metals in these batteries come out as something called "black mass," something that's potentially more harmful in the short term than greenhouse gas emissions as well as being more potentially harmful overall than spent nuclear fuel bundles. I just don't think trying to separate the precious and heavy metals in black mass would be financially feasible.
Love this mower! I bought one last month for my landscape company and the thing is awesome. Also figured out that the bag is interchangeable with the HRX bag which happens to be a lot bigger than the one it comes with.
Also love the fact you have stated it was strickter enviromental standards that they decided to stop production in North America. I never did buy into the reason they gave last year of "We @ Honda want to focus more on our utv, atv, & dirt bike production in North America." Like how they're still building snow blowers too.
I bought my Honda lawn mower through Amazon, and instead of a green dot sticker, mine came with a blue dot. Does that mean that that crankshaft was fixed too?
I am sort of considering purchasing this mower and I was curious if you have experienced any of the issues I have seen on the web related to the self-propel caused by (wet) grass and twigs getting stuck in the belt area? You can see the "exposed" area that causes this issue at 5:21.
Hey cro! None whatsoever! I don’t have sticks and twigs all over my yard. Those that may may have issues but I don’t because I keep my yard tidy. I have never had an issue with grass interfering with the belt either. I also clean my mower deck about 3 times per year.
OMG I ran outside to check out the box it didn't have the green sticker but then I looked at the other side it was there I got lucky. I got mine today some one stole my other one it was also a Honda but a 8 year old one. It looks nice all blacked out.
I just ordered the HRX217HYA. What is your opinion on using synthetic oil vs the OEM Honda oil? I've also heard some people run conventional oil to break in the engine then switch to synthetic.
After discussing this with mechanics they all agreed synthetic is the way to go! I usually use the oil they give you for the break in then switch to synthetic! 👍
I actually just bought that mower last week. I came from a Ryobi electric mower. There are a lot of things different on it overall it isn’t improvement, except then still not used to the system as the lawnmower moves too fast
I got one, checked the box as per your video. It was the only mower I could find that really felt well-built and really looked quality. It's been running like a champ and cuts beautifully.
Just picked up a new HYA for $699 today at the DIYorangeshithole and yes it was hard to find one in stock. They are dumping them now! I can confirm the sealed box had the green dot, but there is not a punch mark on the crank case. One quick check with the engine serial number and it's not on the list. Looks like Honda finally sorted this mess out. After break in, did you switch over to full synthetic? I'm thinking oil change after 30mins, run 5hrs on conventional, then switch to 10w-30 synthetic and change every 25hrs/ 6months. With a steady diet of avgas, it should outlast the 1985 craftsman tractor I've been abusing for the last 15years!
I thought they had stopped making them altogether. I have one that's about 14 years old but the deck is now rusted to the point I had to take cardboard to cover the holes so I wasn't getting stuff flying in my face. Now im torn. I want a new one but am planning a move to a property that will be over an acre and I don't want to push mow so much. I really probably need a ride on mower then but I cant really use one at my current property. There are just too many tight spaces.
I appreciate your mention of non-ethanol fuel. I’ve been using it mixed with stabilizer for thirty years with no issues except for a recent purchase that wasn’t a Honda. I bought my HRN216 in 2020 and avoided the recall. In 2023 I bought a close out Toro Super Recycler model 21386 with the aluminum deck. From the start, I had to fix the valve cover which was leaking. The Toro can handle hills better laterally than the Honda which was the main reason for buying the Toro. However Honda build quality is light years ahead of the Toro. I just replaced the plastic carburetor on the Toro after 15 months. The main jet is super fine for meeting emissions but clogs easily. The main jet on the Honda is larger but still meets emissions while providing better fuel efficiency. The primary reason walk behind mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other small engine equipment including tillers are disappearing is due to USEPA Air Emissions Regulations that were implemented in the early 2000s. There’s a compliance schedule that manufacturers have to implement and most have already shutdown. With Home Depot having a limited supply post recall, I’m considering buying a second HRN216.
I've been thinking about purchasing one but Chickanic did a video 1 yr ago with all the issues from Honda. Some of the issues are the open deck and the drive system and the drive cable. Plus I have some concerns on the plastic deck for the HRX models. I have a lot of rocks and sticks and don't want a cracked deck. I'm undecided, might just get the Toro Super Recycler. I really like the Honda's though.
Hey super Dave, no mower is perfect and each one has their own flaws. Super recyclers have issues backing up. I did a video on that last summer. Are you mowing a rough pasture or something that has all those rocks and sticks?
@@GarageGear Not a pasture but my yard, ditch and garden areas. They aren’t smooth pretty grass areas. I have woods surrounding everything and trees in the yard. Lots of gum balls, sticks and rocks.
I just picked up an HRN and was my first brand new Honda mower. Got it out of the box and noticed the mulching lever had a defective end piece (looks like it was melted with a lightsaber) Contacted Honda via email and no response. Called and was told they wouldn't send a new handle even though it's a 2 dollar piece. I would have to register and take it to a dealer (dealer is 3 weeks out). Very disappointing experience, but still overall happy with the mower. I had higher expectations for Honda though.
I just bought an Hrx select drive from Home Depot they had them at $599. It did have the green dot 👍. Needless to say they're sold out everywhere around here.
Thanks for the video. I’m a new subscriber and your video came up first when looking for a new Honda lawnmower. I plan to buy the Honda HRX217K6VKAD next week, and I will inspect it properly before leaving the store. Thank you for the great videos God bless you
Well I just went to home depot today. They had one left, but the box didn't have the green dot. I asked an associate but he had no clue. Maybe I have to go to a different home depot? Do all the stores put that sticker on the boxes?
Just grabbed my first honda mower today, this exact model at hoke depot $550 but my box had a blue sticker on it. Did they color coordinate anything determining certain things? Thanks!
I just had HD deliver one to me last week (none were in stock locally). Unfortunately the SN is in the range of the recall. Mine doesn't have a green sticker. It has a blue sticker. 🤔 I haven't opened it up to check for the "dimple", because I might just return it if it's part of the recall. I can't seem to find any mention online of a blue sticker being OK.
@@smitastic7030 That's interesting. Thanks for that feedback. There was only one serial number on mine (no "new" serial number) and it was definitely part of the recall. I did expect the box to have been opened and reused, but there was no sign of that. I tried to get some more information on Honda's website but finally gave up. Seems to me that considering Honda is no longer in this business that they are just dumping final stock. The thought also hit me that there's no motivation for Honda to rework an engine with the same care as originally building it. I returned the Honda today as a result. Picked up a new Toro which I suppose I should have in the first place.
Had my HRN216 for 3yrs great power n speed cuts great, only issue is catching bag, the top section it lets all the fine dust ect blow through to your face breathing it in, great mower but if I had known this fault I would have bought something different, my last Honda engine mountfeild mower was 26yrs when it gave up never an issue
I was wondering if this mower would be suitable for me. I use a push mower about 10-30 minutes each mow. As I have a rider. I was looking for quality and longevity so it’s either this mower or the next one up from this one ?? What do you recommend. Thanks ! Awesome videos by the way !
My 2022 HRX (bought September of 2022) is sitting at one of my nearby remaining dealers because it started blowing blue smoke after the cam shaft recall repair. Mulch door has never fully sealed from day one. I personally wouldn’t buy one. Found a 1999 JX75 on marketplace to hold me over while my dealer fights with Honda to get my machine warranted.
@@GarageGear watched everything you've produced on it before I made the leap. Thanks for those videos. Hoping to have my Honda back soon, I'm likely keeping both.
@@GarageGear update on my Honda this morning from the dealer. Cylinder is scored, oil is bypassing the rings all the time now. Dealer is still fighting Honda to get it warrantied. What do you think about this mower compared to the Toro super recycler? The super recycler, to me seems like the deck would get excessive build up of grass with the baffles or whatever they call them under it. And now with them being all briggs engines...

Torn between getting this same honda model or a Toro Super Recycler… which do you recommend that has a better cut quality, more comfortable, and just better overall?
@@GarageGear that’s what I started leaning towards.. Do you know if the warranties are still good on the unused models still in stock even though they stopped making them last year? There’s a few still here at my local HD
Yes. There will be some type of random quality issue like the transmission fluid issue on mine, but once it's fixed- it'll be last for however long you take care of it.
hello, I see that your channel mainly deals with HONDA, in the spring I would definitely like to invest in a lawnmower that can handle the grass and that has the fewest problems and is easy to handle. Do you recommend the Honda?
@@kwintystringshun814 yes I would recommend and Honda. But I would recommend getting one sooner than later since they are no longer producing gas powered mowers.
I have this very same model.........my bag never stays on place. Huge design flaw, plastic square tabs where you hook the steel hooks from the bag are too short. Am I the only one having this issue?.......I bag all the time and when I have to stop every few minutes to "re-hook" one side of the bagger, it drives my crazy!!!.....and yes, I always clean off the grass from the area before attaching the bag, but that does not help. .......anyone else having this issue????
Im not a crazy electric powered save the world guy , my Ariens snowblower could never be replaced by electric but I’m sold on the electric mowers if you have a smaller yard. One of the best tools I’ve bought. Greenworks 80volt. It’s Awsome. . That being said. If you have something bigger and need more range. Can’t beat a Honda.
Hey JB thanks for all your content …it’s not only very informative but they are also fun to watch ! I just picked up a HRX217 VYAA yesterday …..your reviews were super helpful on making my decision By the way do you know anything about Honda not discontinuing the lawnmower products, they released some new videos yesterday about the line up on their TH-cam channel
We’ll have to stay tuned to see what they are going to do. I wonder if they’re changing their tune. Thanks for following along on the channel. I’m glad you find it to be useful.
I’m up in Canada and went to the Honda Powerhouse Store up by me (north of Toronto). Guy told me as far as he knows they are just moving production out of the US but the mowers will still be available. Not sure if it’s going to change anything with quality.
Hì JB. Just saw your video and went out and get the mentioned Honda at home depot. Upon taking it out of the box and did overall inspection, I found several hairline cracks at the right side of the engine wall (where the oil dip stick located), And look like it's been welded in some way. Compared to the other side of the engine (left) is smooth and no hair line cracks. Since it's passed QC from Honda, should I be concerned and just go ahead and returned to make sure. I'm a 61 years old guy and it's not convenient to pack or unpack the mower from the box and lift it. It's over a100lb box. Would like to hear your advice. Thanks
Thanks JB. That's a comfort to hear, not to worry about hair line cracks. That would save me a trip returning to Home Depot. This is my first Honda mower. Will start using and test out the mower tomorrow
Whats your thoughts on the hondas with plastic decks? I understand plastic from 2024 is advanced, but why did they charge more for these models when metal is presumably safer and more reliable? Was it the supercar, lightweight logic of "we will charge you more money, for the striped out model?"
Hey John the plastic HRX Honda has a few other better features. The bag/mulch lever is really nice. You can do partial of either of your choice. Plus rubber wheels with bearings! 👍👍
@GarageGear what about the base model the HRN 216. Is that also plastic. What about the stamped aluminum deck its supposed to have. A mower with a plastic deck is a slap I'm the face at that cost to the consumer. That's a joke, midas well have a plastic carburetor & fuel tank & he'll we can even do plastic mower blades. Fuck the consumer is what we're doing Wright infront of their faces & their still paying for it & buying into the garbage. Plastic is the new steel in the US.
I love mine I bought but, I did have an issue with the bag falling off. Hondas customer service needs to be retrained on how to use there crm tool. Shouldn’t take multiple weeks to get an answer on something
Have an older HRR216, it’s a great mower that hasn’t given me any issues for years. Use my timemaster regularly now, but I won’t be getting right of the Honda anytime soon
Never had a push mower with overhead valves. Always just had the old-fashioned flat head-side valve engines. How often do you need to reset the valve lash on one of those things? I ask this because I thought my 14 year old rider bit the dust the other day. Went to start it and it wouldn't crank. Took out the spark plug and it spun freely enough. Had to get out my feeler gauges and re-set the valve lash, .004 on the intake valve and .006 on the exhaust. New valve cover gasket and she fired right back up like new! On a side note, I also added "poor man's power steering" by adding a set of needle bearings to the steering spindles. I tried replacing the front wheel bushings with bearings, but the bearings wouldn't fit, so have a slightly larger set ordered.
Along time. My briggs 725exi has over 800 hours on it and I haven't adjusted the valves yet. So i would say valve adjustment shouldn't really be an issue specially for a Honda engines which are known for having well into the 1000s of hours of run time.
Hard to beat Honda ..! I was 😤 to here 🇺🇸Gov & EPA scared Honda from producing gas mower .. My Husqvarna Mower has Honda GVC 160 powering it Great Engine trouble free with proper care..! Just ordered some spare parts to Keep it going strong 🤞🏻
So what would be your recommendation on the best mulching self propelled push mower? Mainly focusing on mulching capability, but overall capability/ratings second
Snagged an HRN216HYAA off facebook for 75 freedom bucks that had 0 air filter or cover and a rough idle that surged. Took it home put a can of sea foam in her and removed the carb. Cleaned the jets and venturi. Fired right up and ran great after reassembly. Love a trusty Honda engine mower.

Good info here smit!
Solid plan Brian!

Sounds like you’re good to go! Are you having issues with yours?
I've owned an HRX217 for now on nine years. Just this year, I had to replace an o-ring seal on the camshaft. It was a relatively easy repair, parts were very inexpensive. If anyone is wondering about buying a Honda, just do it, following his advice on verifying the Honda recall verifications.

Hey JB 👍🏼
ROCK ON SILVER! Those old Hondas are awesome!
A can completely understand and agree. The older Honda’s I own are so well built they could easily outlast me.

I've called a few places and even been to several locations that sell HRN216s. I've noticed that every single one of them have cracks in the engine block, not normal casting. Every dealership that I informed was flabbergast that they never noticed.
Does yours have a crack in your block?? I'm trying to find some that don't but its hard. I suspect this is how the cracks occurred:
Honda rolled them off the line to test with the original cam shaft, which causes internal damage, but they don't notice until it gives them issues which then they replace the faulty cam shaft with the new one.
Just bought mine today and mowed about .7 acres in an hour and 15 minutes which is much faster than my rider so far I love it. I was actually super surprised at how quite it is for a gas mower as well.
Awesome Tommy! That’s good amount of mowing!

Hey mate im a gardening contractor over in Australia.
I have that exact mower. Just did a service on it a few hours ago.
Been using it for 2 years. I still really like it.
It is made in USA so unsure why it it wont be sold anymore to americans
Hey Luke! I assume it’s because there is a big push to go all battery here. Terrible idea. Thanks for sharing bud!
Glad you are enjoying it! Awesome to know!
Also love the fact you have stated it was strickter enviromental standards that they decided to stop production in North America. I never did buy into the reason they gave last year of "We @ Honda want to focus more on our utv, atv, & dirt bike production in North America."
Like how they're still building snow blowers too.
Yep! Thanks for watching!
That may have been a tiny part but i think a larger part was battery powered mowers.

I’m kinda deciding between the Honda and a Toro 21564 I have. I have a yard with little nooks and crannies and the Personal Pace can be finicky.
OMG I ran outside to check out the box it didn't have the green sticker but then I looked at the other side it was there I got lucky. I got mine today some one stole my other one it was also a Honda but a 8 year old one. It looks nice all blacked out.
Whoa someone stole your mower?
I just ordered the HRX217HYA. What is your opinion on using synthetic oil vs the OEM Honda oil? I've also heard some people run conventional oil to break in the engine then switch to synthetic.
After discussing this with mechanics they all agreed synthetic is the way to go! I usually use the oil they give you for the break in then switch to synthetic! 👍
I actually just bought that mower last week. I came from a Ryobi electric mower. There are a lot of things different on it overall it isn’t improvement, except then still not used to the system as the lawnmower moves too fast
Thanks for sharing Matthew! Enjoy the mow!
I got one, checked the box as per your video. It was the only mower I could find that really felt well-built and really looked quality. It's been running like a champ and cuts beautifully.
Awesome! That’s great to hear!
@@jagboy69 that is a rock solid plan my friend! Congrats on the new mower!
Hondas are still around for a short time. They are selling off last years stock.
Thanks for sharing this home orchard
@@GarageGear I don’t even really want a self propelled mower but all the better ones have drives.

Well I just went to home depot today. They had one left, but the box didn't have the green dot. I asked an associate but he had no clue. Maybe I have to go to a different home depot? Do all the stores put that sticker on the boxes?
It’s not the store putting the stickers on. It’s Honda. I would go to another store!👍

I haven't opened it up to check for the "dimple", because I might just return it if it's part of the recall. I can't seem to find any mention online of a blue sticker being OK.
Not sure of any info on the blue dots.

Thanks

Hold onto that Honda!
Not exactly sure rebel! Thanks for sharing my friend!
Along time. My briggs 725exi has over 800 hours on it and I haven't adjusted the valves yet.
So i would say valve adjustment shouldn't really be an issue specially for a Honda engines which are known for having well into the 1000s of hours of run time.
