That car saved my life once when I pulled out into a 4 lane street to make a left turn and someone ran the red light and almost t-boned me on my driver's door. I was stopped waiting for an opening in traffic, saw that car not slowing down, the speed limit was 45mph, By the time he was over the crosswalk I hit the accelerator and he missed me by inches. I later returned through that same intersection and saw my car had left skid marks. Thank you Ford Mustang!

Tyler's been hitting the weights and living well I can tell. The clearing of negative stressors and bringing more peace to your life really can make all the difference.
The independent rear in the later mustangs actually becomes more of a problem for grip the higher you go in horsepower so if you want a drag car these are the ideal platform
They also honestly drive like a BMW 5 series. Which is commendable. But... the muscle car soul was lost. Remember, the muscle car was the American version of the U.L.'s "hot hatch" - cheap car with a big engine. The 6th and 7th gen simply don't feel like one, IMO.
Good friend of mine was a suspension engineer on the new Mustang for 2005. He actually brought a late preproduction model to a family party before they went on sale. I remember him telling me how getting an IRS on the car was really a problem for Ford. Ford was getting tons of grief for not having one. They finally figured out how to get it done.

GREAT find Hoovie. I remember when this came out, I was in college. Still looks great and sounds AMAZING. Nice to see someone put the miles on and enjoyed it! ALSO, we need to see a road trip video with the conversion van!
When I worked for a Ford dealer I got to drive a GT500KR of this gen about an hour and a half to bring it back to the dealership. It very much drives like a true muscle car, all about the engine and looks and I loved it.
I’ve never clicked on a TH-cam notification so fast! I’ve wanted one of these for a long time and I look at so many for sale (on AutoTempest actually) trying to convince myself to sell my truck and get one. It’s a dream car of mine and I can’t wait to own one. But my 1997 Mustang SVT Cobra will do in the meantime
They dyno like 450 wheel stock. With mods they dyno about what this one did. It will make the same power at 200k as it does at 20k all things equal. This is all assuming it's been maintained and is it proper running order. Hp don't just magically disappear because something has miles on it lol
@@normiels3the 2v 5.4 isn't garbage. They can also go 100s of thousands of miles. Yes these are more stout they had stronger internals vs the 2v 5.4.. these are very reliable.
Tyler, awesome buy! I am a Mustang guy and finding that car is a sweet find. I, personally, like well loved cars that seem to be taken care of. Enjoy it!
You can re-seal the headlamps, there are 2 ways, 1st way silicone around the joint between the lens and the housing, which doesn't look as good, 2nd way bake the lamp assembly around 200 degrees separate the lens from the housing, clean up the old seal, reseal it with butyl, what the OEM uses or silicone, and clamp it till it dries, then reinstall it. You can find complete instructions online and I suggest you do so before starting, I’ve never separated the lamp assemblies on that make and model vehicle but you're usually safe at 200 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes to soften the seal enough so you can separate the lens from the housing. I’m adding an edit because I left out a very important step, no matter which method you choose to repair your headlamps make sure you remove all moisture from inside the headlamp assembly, otherwise it will fog up again. I usually do this with paper towels and a bent coat hanger (crude, but effective) being careful not to scratch the lens. I then follow that up with a heat gun but you can use a hairdryer. With the silicone around the edge repair, this is a big pain in the butt, but if you want it to not fog up again you've got to get out as much moisture as possible. I've got a shortcut for clearing your headlamp lens without sanding and polishing if anybody’s interested, it takes less than five minutes to do both headlamps and it looks as good as new.
@@evictioncarpentry2628 Reread my comment, I never said it was sealed together with silicone, I said you can put silicone around the joint, and I never said exactly how to reattach the lens to the housing. And for that, he needs to watch an in-depth video on how it’s done, which I suggested. I guess I didn’t make it plain enough for everyone to understand.
The solid 8.8 rear differential probably was chosen by Ford for drag racing as much as cost savings. If I remember right back in that era when I was messing around with 5.0 Fox Mustangs quite a few people were pulling the IRS out of the earlier Cobras because they would wheel-hop a lot. Why put in the IRS rear if so many didn't want it? The solid 8.8 with the 5-link set up they had actually worked pretty good in most conditions besides leaving parking lots after a car show. 😏
The IRS changes and ecoboost were to allow it to be sold worldwide, especially in Europe. Remember that for 20+ years there was simply NO Mustang in most of Europe. The downside is that the car became more "refined" and lost a lot of its soul, driving more like a BMW 5 series than a muscle car. On the track, the 6th gen models were basically within a coupe of tenths of a 5 series - respectable indeed, but most of us didn't buy a Mustang to be a BMW clone.
The car is fine IF you keep the traction control on. Turn it off and the rear will absolutely hop out on you and unless you are experienced in handling a car getting sideways, well, you're the next online sensation. So, the pattern is: turn off traction control to spin the tires, leave cars and coffee, do a nice burnout. Hit second gear, rear end hops out on you, into the ditch. THEN blame the car's design rather than your idiot self.
Top Gear did a piece on these when they came out and they directly compared it to a GT that had been modified by Roush with more power, 415hp, upgraded brakes and IRS. The Roush version was quicker by 2 seconds on its lap time compared to the GT500. Which just goes to show if you want to drag race go live axle, if you want to do something with turns, go IRS
My dad worked for Ford in the '50s through the '70s. You can bet we were a Ford Family. They sometimes had events my dad took me along to and at one I met Carroll Shelby, only I was too young to know who he was. My dad told me over the years about Shelby and the things he was working on, and reminded of my goof. (I wasn't even 8 yet.)
What a find! im so jealous, you got an incredible deal. already has a ton of miles so it doesn't hurt to daily drive it and worry about dinging it or anything.
8:39 a trick to solve this is remove a small bit of the rubber seal at the back cover of the unit on the underside so water can't get in but can get out, I did it on my car, my mom has it done on her car and on both it solved the problem without replacing the unit
I love how we reference the hard plastic glove box and other bits on "cheap" American cars but when you find a Mercedes of the same year with the same cheap plastic everywhere no one bats an eye.
I find the plastics to be fine and simple. What I loathe is fake manufactured leather and carbon fiber as if it's luxury. And Alcantara on everything. Plus a zillion switches, LEDs, and giant iPads, when all you want is a few gauges and a lot of power. Back in the day, we had other names for these materials - Vinyl, suede, and fiberglass. Basically they have passed off manufactured synthetic materials with a little bit of tweaking and modernization as "luxury", with a huge markup for it. This generation was simple and kept the price down. Plus it's not like I rub my face on the glove box. It is there, it holds things. Who cares if it is plastic or not?
@@plektosgaming Yea, I agree mostly, I just want real leather and materials, though in my 2021 Mustang I actually really like the "faux foam leather" that's on the top of the dash. You'd probably not notice what it was unless you touch it, otherwise the interior is so nice especially compared to what we normally consider "luxury" these days. My biggest thing has been that alcantara and faux suede are not luxury, they're literally the opposite of luxury. It's cheap polyester. People have still yet to realize you're paying extra for a downgrade on material. But I digress, Tyler and everyone else pointing out plastic in cheap cars and ignoring it in expensive cars always grinds my gears.
@@Baywire The faux foam on the dash is nice. But if you want real full-grain leather liek they used to put in Mercedes and similar, you can get it - it'll cost you about $1500-$2000 to get a shop to do it for you. Which is actually less than the "premium" trim upgrade on most models. Also, "Nappa" and other leathers in the U.S. are basically everyone lying and fakery - at least 90% is not the real stuff. The safer bet it to get genuine Italian (full grain) leather (about $400 just for materials). It will last forever if you keep it conditioned.
@@plektosgaming Oh yea, I might consider that in the future tbh depending on my plans. But if you take a modern Merc today, it has lower build "quality" to my Ford. As much plastic, nothing fits right, everything creaks of plastic when you touch it. And it's not that it's JUST new luxury cars. They've been like this for a long time. Only the highest trim levels of any of these companies are using real leather for anything more than the seats. High spec C6 corvettes have tons of leather and alcantara in it but no one talks about that. I just find it funny we ONLY call it out when it's an American car. But you are right, we can all just do interior jobs on our cars and make them even nicer than the high trim specs.
@@Baywire Note that Alcantara is not real leather, either. We used to call it be another name, suede. But, yes, most of them are just trash. No wood, everything as lightweight as possible (don't tap too hard on anything), low profile tires ( sporty! ), and seats that hurt after 30 minutes. Also, the leather GM uses in the Corvette is manufactured and not full-grain, either. It's all a long way from the days of something like the Mercedes of 25 years ago.
I'd like to know what they did to the 5.4L to make it reliable. In pickups it's the worst engine ever produced. When it came out in 2004 it came with 22 design flaws that made it prone to grenade.

I am not sure what your point is.
Too funny. I love these high mileage buys because to be honest, most of us average Joes can only afford these type of deals for our second fun car. And I feel privileged doing that!! Keep doing what you're doing Jon Hernandez (non Tavarish). Although I like him too.
Always liked those, but I like the Boss 302 better, because they actually tuned the suspension and chassis on the Boss. But don't get me wrong, I love the idea of plunking in a 500HP engine into a bone stock Mustang GT chassis, makes for great fun.
@@plektosgamingthey're different cars this is more of a muscle car cruiser, straight line bruiser. It sounds better than the coyote based engines too.
They didn't just throw a gt500 engine into a mustang gt. There is alot of things changed on the gt500. They handled decent for their day they just didn't specialize in that this was more of a muscle car cruiser, straight line bruiser.
I'd love to do this some day with a Ferrari. Just like that guy did with his Mercedes (I think it was a 1960s coupe?) - and clocked well over a million miles on it. :)
If you dont mind can you look at who built the engine? Its on a name plate on the drivers side cam cover. I built those engines for shelby/ ford for 17 years. We love to see where they go.
These early gt500s are majorly slept on. They have the old school look and sound like a 3v but it has potential like the newer coyote cars. They also make way more tq by comparison to a coyote based engine even if they are running a positive displacement blower too.
You mentioned a Shelby GLHS, I had no idea it existed. I know Americans don't like hot hatches, well small hatchbacks in general, but they're ridiculously cheap for what they are, a limited production run car produced by Shelby. You should definitely get a Shelby GLHS.
It's a pity Carroll Shelby wasn't around for the Fiat 500 Abarth. Just imagine what he would have done with one of those. I had a 2015 Abarth 500 and loved it. It easily made the best sound for a 4 cylinder, and it kept up with way faster cars. I wish we would have gotten some of the special models in the US.
There is definitely a hatch market in the USA. Try to buy a eg or ek civic and your wallet will be hurting. The problem with our market isn't that there isn't demand. It's that there isn't (and has never really been) demand for _new_ hatchbacks. There are A LOT of people that like them, were just all poor and want to buy them used. But you can have a market like that for obvious reasons.
I very recently became the owner of a a 79k mileage black '06 manual with a Corsa exhaust, Cervini Eleanor style exterior add-on's etc. . . . for only $6k. I'd like to think that is a very Ed Bolian/Tyler Hoover thing to do. Who knew I'd fall in love love with a car I trash talked for years . . .
Tyler Wins!!!!! Well done! Ultimate Hoovie Hooptie purchase. Now get SCT and BAMa to tune it!!! Plus, a multistage exhaust (one button for changing the exhaust to a straight out, another button for a quieter ride, etc).
@unsatsoupsandwich it's an 18-foot cutaway with the areo box. I just did a 645 mile trip with under a thousand pounds of cargo and I barely got 8 miles to the gallon. My freightliner M2 with a 26-foot box, and weighs 17000 pounds empty with the cummins 6.7 gets 12 miles to the gallon with an 11,000 pound load
I get my dream of having fun with cars through these videos! I can’t afford a break with my car so seeing you get to play and use cars for what they are has always made me happy!
This generation of Ford Modular V8s were very good and durable. The 03/04 cobras from the previous body had an IRS, but many that liked to drag race swapped them for a beefy solid rear axle. The 4.6-5.4 mod engines were known to get a lot of miles without any major problems. Since this car is also a manual, you dont have to worry about the Auto trans going out on you. Great buy!
Check oil level in the supercharger. If the noise stops when it warms up it is either low on fluid or the bearing in the input shaft is starting to go out.
One of the reasons this car had a live rear axle is because Ford knew owners would put more power in it with mods. The live axle could handle more power than an independent rear end.
Now, imagine Car Wizard going through the car to make sure it truly is as good as it runs, and man.......this is the best car you have bought in a long time! Save it and keep it preserved!
5:36 This is a more verbose rendition of "lol can't turn." S197 with the factory trackbar setup does pretty well in NASA American Iron series. Springs, dampers, maybe poly bushings and it'll handle just fine. Drop some weight and it runs with the best of them.
In my opinion if this car's engine still runs clean with little or no smoke, KEEP THIS CAR and put it back in perfect condition, and please don't beat it so much. It will last a long time if treated decently and respected. Peace.
As someone who drives an 06 Yukon with 260K miles, these videos always make me giggle. High mileage cars is everyday for a lot of us! They don’t make them like they used to.
A regular-ass car with a 260K miles is not even remotely equivalent to a top-tier muscle car with nearly the same miles. Most GT500s of that era are sitting well under 100k miles, meaning that the equivalent for your normie car is probably more like 600k miles.
Handling was terrible in those up until the 2011 model year when they switched to an aluminum block!! Body style changed in 2010 but that year still had the old iron block engine! And the aluminum block cars got a 50 hp bump as well
This was one of the SCARIEST cars I ever drove! A Ford dealer let me test drive a one year old model by myself. What a mess! Live rear suspension was all over the road, tires tram lining, wheels spinning at ridiculously light inputs. All I could do was to concentrate on keeping it going in a straight line. Never wanted a Mustang ever again.
I just also picked up a hooptie as well, scooped up a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT with 241k miles on the original engine and transmission with every repair and service done at the GM dealership. Was hoping I could convince the Wizard to let me bring it up from Oklahoma 😁
I don't care what state you live in, if the Check Engine light comes on in a car (and a Ford at that) with 200,000+ miles and a squeal you can't place, you should probably not just "meh, whatever" it. But hey, more views for the video where the Wizard tells him all the problems with it, right?
Testament to the FMC. 210K on an original bottom end, that who knows when they added the new blower to. For that money, I’d make this my daily, pimples and all.
I bought one the same year and same color for 16k a few years ago with 106k miles, you got a hell of a deal. Also if you do long tube headers and a off road x pipe you’ll probably gain about 100 hp with that vmp blower. Awesome purchase you definitely win.
It should probably have been closer to $10k to really be a deal, given the mileage. But it wasn't terribly overpriced. I'm a fan of driving cars forever. And also decided to just pay this past August instead of haggling. '03 Suburban. 110k miles. Even after sprucing it up, deferred maintenance, etc. I'm only into it for $20k. For a vehicle that should make it to 350k miles😊

That car was truly loved. Puts a smile on my face seeing that level of care and passion. I know you will give it a great home and everything it needs.
Headlights are sealed with butyl, not silicone.
Excellent info, thank you.
BMR Watts Link
Top Gear did a piece on these when they came out and they directly compared it to a GT that had been modified by Roush with more power, 415hp, upgraded brakes and IRS. The Roush version was quicker by 2 seconds on its lap time compared to the GT500. Which just goes to show if you want to drag race go live axle, if you want to do something with turns, go IRS
They do fine leaving car shows if you're not an idiot and can actually drive.
Aside from the original Mustangs of the mid 60s, this is the best looking of all Mustangs. I absolutely love them.
You scored man! You can see it pulling the seat back when you tromp on it. With over 200k that's impressively healthy!
What a fun car! Nice!
When people talk shit about a live rear axle I find it to be funny. The fast drag cars are all live rear axle with 4 link suspension.
5:30 The red race car in the background to the left. Is this a future hooptie yet to be shown?
200,000+ miles of that kind of power, this thing has delivered the joy of 5 normal cars
most people hate this generation vs the 11-14 cars. But they are freakin bulletproof and a load of fun.
I'd like to know what they did to the 5.4L to make it reliable. In pickups it's the worst engine ever produced. When it came out in 2004 it came with 22 design flaws that made it prone to grenade.
@@muskokamike127they share the same block but almost everything else is different. 4v heads, forged rotating assembly, etc. you’re talking about the 5.4 3v which has a disaster track record
It has burnt more than 12,000 gallons of gas in 16 years.
@@StalkingWOMBAT thanks, I was wondering and was about to google ...you saved me the trouble!
@@amazingjason455 try to do the math to figure out how many thousands of gallons of oil goes into producing new cars. All the plastics, all the transportation of each and every single part, not to mention the recycling emissions that would go into dismantling this one. its great that it lasted this long and is as strong as it is. I am not sure what your point is.
Considering I have a '09 with 208k miles and it runs like new shows how well these cars are built. Has need nothing outside of wear items.
Too funny. I love these high mileage buys because to be honest, most of us average Joes can only afford these type of deals for our second fun car. And I feel privileged doing that!! Keep doing what you're doing
Jon Hernandez (non Tavarish). Although I like him too.
Always liked those, but I like the Boss 302 better, because they actually tuned the suspension and chassis on the Boss. But don't get me wrong, I love the idea of plunking in a 500HP engine into a bone stock Mustang GT chassis, makes for great fun.
Boss remains the best modern Mustang
@@ak2112 444hp is plenty considering how much better it puts it down to the pavement.
Always wanted one of these. Such a fun car. Glad to see you are feeling better!
Can we all just aknowledge that there was an absolute legend that bought this car and then DROVE the thing!
Romeo engine plant? RIP
Fell in love with this car after hearing the supercharger whine in the opening scenes of "I am Legend". Think it was an '07. 👍

Great video, really makes me apprecute the s197 more. Crazy how much of an improvement it is ovet the standard GT
We like hatches, we just didn't very many of the cool ones until recently.
I love hatchbacks, Wagons and Vans. With the exception of Vans, it's a pity that the only real Wagons we get anymore is Volvo.
The s600 video is how I come to your channel and that was seven years ago! Can’t believe I been watching you that long! Doesn’t feel that!
I love this thing so much. This bodystyle was one of the cars that got me into cars in the first place, and this one is EXTRA spicy!
I very recently became the owner of a a 79k mileage black '06 manual with a Corsa exhaust, Cervini Eleanor style exterior add-on's etc. . . . for only $6k. I'd like to think that is a very Ed Bolian/Tyler Hoover thing to do. Who knew I'd fall in love love with a car I trash talked for years . . .
Now THIS is awesome Hoovie content. Darn near a stock Hellcat for 14k and better yet, it’s not a Hellcat
Tyler Wins!!!!! Well done! Ultimate Hoovie Hooptie purchase. Now get SCT and BAMa to tune it!!! Plus, a multistage exhaust (one button for changing the exhaust to a straight out, another button for a quieter ride, etc).
notice the style changes, this girl got him good.....
he still looks like an uncle
That era of mustang is the best looking IMHO of all the new ones as it still pays a lot of homage to the original Steve McQueen bullit era fastbacks!
Ford V8's are usually bulletproof. I have had every one I own way over 200,000 miles. The bodies rust out long before the motor blows up.
I agree, except for maybe the Triton 5.4. Lol.
@unsatsoupsandwich the 2 valve is good. I have 2. A V8 and V10. One has 237,000 the other has 270,000 miles. Gotta change the oil every 6000 miles
@@thethomasj1795 That V10 needs a second fuel tank. 😉

Which has to be 30HP right there?
Lol IKR
Finally a car where it wasn’t stored. It was driven and enjoyed. That makes all car guys happy.
Great buy!
Outstanding find! I'm a fan of those solid rear axle Mustangs from the 2000's.
I'm not a Mustang guy, but I believe that generation Mustang is the best looking one since the 68.
bro bought a car sign un seen, drives it like he stole it, and immediately takes it to the dyno instead of his mechanic. God I love this channel.
Check oil level in the supercharger. If the noise stops when it warms up it is either low on fluid or the bearing in the input shaft is starting to go out.
Or maybe just sc pulley bearings!
Belt squeal. My bearing going out. Sound like a ford power steering pump whine
One of the reasons this car had a live rear axle is because Ford knew owners would put more power in it with mods. The live axle could handle more power than an independent rear end.
I wonder if Tyler and April would adopt Doug for their next vacation
Is that cringe-ass Insta thot still with him?
Duck Foug.
Now, imagine Car Wizard going through the car to make sure it truly is as good as it runs, and man.......this is the best car you have bought in a long time! Save it and keep it preserved!
The real Hoovie is back
I gasped when i saw those dyno numbers. Holy crap dude what a find. Been watching a long long time this is hands down your best find yet
Now this is a hooptie!!
Back in April of 22 our local ford dealership had a 2007 One owner GT500 with 245k miles on it!
14,000 for a car that can do 180+ mph is nuts
Handling was terrible in those up until the 2011 model year when they switched to an aluminum block!! Body style changed in 2010 but that year still had the old iron block engine! And the aluminum block cars got a 50 hp bump as well
Block has 0 effect on handling
Pennsylvania has emissions and it's just fine. It makes you actually take care of your shit.
You need to know how to drive in order to drive one. Not to mention you DO need to get some heat in the tires before you let 'er rip.
It’s not for everyone. Some of us love that sort of thing (I’ve owned two 😅)
An example of blaming a car on lack of skill or judgement
I just also picked up a hooptie as well, scooped up a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT with 241k miles on the original engine and transmission with every repair and service done at the GM dealership. Was hoping I could convince the Wizard to let me bring it up from Oklahoma 😁
I don't care what state you live in, if the Check Engine light comes on in a car (and a Ford at that) with 200,000+ miles and a squeal you can't place, you should probably not just "meh, whatever" it. But hey, more views for the video where the Wizard tells him all the problems with it, right?
That tiny stock throttle body is definitely a choke point
CHEAPEST in the USA is indeed quite impressive, but I'm still waiting for him to find the cheapest in the entire UNIVERSE!!
Testament to the FMC. 210K on an original bottom end, that who knows when they added the new blower to. For that money, I’d make this my daily, pimples and all.
That's the best body style the Mustang ever got.
I have to agree with you. Previous were a little blah and later a little too anime.
Is that a joke?
I bought one the same year and same color for 16k a few years ago with 106k miles, you got a hell of a deal. Also if you do long tube headers and a off road x pipe you’ll probably gain about 100 hp with that vmp blower. Awesome purchase you definitely win.
Imagine thinking $14k is cheap for a car with over 200,000 miles on it and likely near the end of its life.
