I've just already checked the orchestral patches and they sound good, really nice. This synth is pure inspiration, lightweight, good sound quality... and it has an incredible price
I actually love this board, at least from what I have seen so far. One thing I will say for those of you asking for a MIDI/Audio Sequencer, the OS in this board makes it easy for Yamaha to do an update without changing hardware. I would not be surprised to see them do a version 2 of the OS and begin adding better recording features. There are a lot of people that simply do not wish to look at a computer screen while composing, arranging, etc. The Korg Kronos got it right, but I also believe there is space in the industry for what Yamaha is doing with the Montage and the MODX. In fact, I rather like a lot of what I see from the MODX. Super sound shaping and performance features. Great sounds. I love scenes, which to me is a more simplified version of the Karma technology that you can get on Korg or Motif boards. It's more practical. On my old Korg M3 Xpanded the Karma felt complex and like a computer programming language. I think Yamaha may have simplified that process down to more practical needs and features without losing the powerful capabilities.
Love the transparency. Your sincere and thoughtful answers are greatly appreciated, Just bought my modx8 last night and enjoying the day exploring the board! Thank you!
Hello Dom! My name is Danny from Israel, and I really like your channel! I have 2 questions and I would really appreciate it if you could help me with them. 1. When I play and raise an octave through the button, if I switch to another sound the octave does not reset and it stays on what I pressed. Is there a way for this not to happen? 2. Is it possible to connect the modx to the korg pa3 keys with a midi cable and when I press transpose on the korg it will also be on the yamaha? Thank you my friend!
The transpose buttons were better on the MOXF. When you transpose in half-steps, there is no active indication that the keyboard is transposed. You only get a quick pop-up window when you set the transposer. It would be nice if the touch screen would have a line of text at the top to indicate the number of half steps being actively transposed. For example, when you you set the keyboard for a full step up, the text would indicate "T+2". How about a firmware upgrade that includes this?
I watched 30 other video on this synth and none of you guys mentioned that it had no sequencer. You all almost made me buy into it and its the main feature for me.
Hey Roger, I see where you're coming from but would you expect a Moog Sub37 to have a sequencer? Would you expect a Prophet to have one? It's exactly the same thing. Yamaha doesn't claim that this synth is a workstation anywhere. They've actually gone to great lengths to make people understand that this is not the same philosophy like the Motif. Anyway, that's why we do those videos so you can be informed and make the right choices :)
Dom Sigalas funnily current Prophets and Moog 37 have sequencers. Step sequencers, that is, but either way they are not multitimbral etc And one thing you'd expect from a DX lineage synth is to have aftertouch. That said, it looks like a very interesting synth!!! And might cure my thirst for the MONTAGE X)
Waiting for mine to arrive as we speak. It's out for delivery, hope it arrives soon. You have me pumped to start playing. Now if only I could get my Fairlight working again I'd be really all set!
Just bought an 88 key one today on line. Can't wait to get my hands on it. I'll be checking into your channel for advice on using it. Thank you so very much for your videos.
i HAVE THE XF, TO PROGRAM A SONG USING THE SEQUENCER IS TIME CONSUMING, AND DIFFICULT TO CORRECT A BAD NOTE, NO WAY TO STRETCH OR FADE, NO VISUAL.... STUDIO ONE, AUDIOBOX USB AND YOUR COMPUTER MAKES IT SO MUCH EASIER TO LAY DOWN TRACKS AND MANIPULATE THEM SO A SEQUENCER IS A MINOR CONCERN, THE IMPROVED RIFFS AND SUPER KNOB THAT COME WITH THE MODX VS XF IS THE MAIN ATTRACTION, ALONG WITH THE LIGHT WEIGHT, THE 61 IS GOOD ENOUGH, WANT AN OCTAVE LOWER OR HIGHER PRESS THE OCTAVE BUTTON, THE MODX HAS A PLUG FOR AN IPAD THAT CAN CHANGE THE RATE OF THE ARPEGGIO... SO AWESOME.
Dom! Thanks for including me and my question in your video. What a pleasant surprise. We are really blessed to have you sharing all of your wisdom and gifts with us. Blessings Brother!
Dom, I really enjoy the videos. I get my MODX tomorrow. I have a couple questions that you can maybe do videos about: Can you show us how to create a new rhythm sequence? Show how to import sample files or sequence files from a DAW ( if possible). What file formats does MODX support? I saw your Arturia software synth video. Is it possible to import Arturia samples/sounds into the MODX? Thanks, George S
@Warp pretty sure if it's lacking the hardware, it's going to lack the software to interpret that. My Electro 5D Lacks a pitch Bend and mod wheel the software to register what to do so slaving it to another board with those components wont work.
Can it recieve after touch and respond from a controller with it, Like the $399 midi keyboards that do have it? where is the full feature sequencer? With the big touch screen, sequencing would be so easy and comprehensive on this and the montage, with just an os update. Why oh why Yamaha are you so stubborn and refusing to give your buyers what they want? I would pay $100 extra for an update that included a full sequencer or true user sampling. Seems like the motif es was the most versatile yamaha synth so far.
Can you suggest a video (you or anyone else) that describes in detail how to successfully use MODX as an audio interface. Great idea - can see all the parts sitting there in my MODX and in Logic (and even record/playback MIDI perfectly), but no Audio - Arghh! Thanks in advance! (love your content Dom! Thanks for sharing!)
Great Big Thanks for answering my question. It will be a great addition to my Montage, I love all, especially besides sounds etc. the light weight. I go for it.
Hi... Recently I bought YAMAHA MODX6. Most of the time I used to play Bass in the left and Piano/other instruments in the right. But the problem is, when I try to do TRANSPOSE or OCTAVE shift, its affecting my split point too. Actually I want a fixed split point which should not be moved whenever I do transpose or octave shift. Is there any solution for this?
Ever since yamaha got rid of the full featured sequencer on the montage and apple got rid of the headphone jack, anyone that complains is basically called a dinosaur and living in the past, when being able to do everything and edit without a computer helps speed up the work flow and has been loved by yamaha fans for decades and is a very valid and valuable feature and makes everything faster and easier. Just like wired headphones without dongles attached are still very useful and practical. truth is apple wants you to buy wireless headphones theirs $$ Yamaha wants you to get hooked on iPad and computer sequencers and upgrade yearly $$$ basically renting their software for a never ending revenue flow. It's all about the money and not about what is fastest and best for their customers, when now you need two devices to do what you could do with one before. Computer and keyboard, wired headphone and dongle. Having said all of that in a rant, this is a great keyboard and probably the best buy in hardware synthesis out now, even for those of us that love full featured sequencers, just do not sell your current keybaoard and use it to sequence the MODX through midi, however that takes away your trade in value, oh well.
192-NOTE TOTAL POLYPHONY MODX features 128-note stereo AWM2 polyphony and 64-notes of FM-X polyphony. Due to the unique architecture of MODX and MONTAGE, this polyphony is always available without latency or compromising other features.
Do you have a tutorial explaining how to use the mail features of modx or some course O can take to learn how to take advantage of all the features it has ?
Dear Dom I have a Modx and Cubase. Where can I get the Vangelis sound from Blade Runner film main theme? I think is a Brass, and also the strings are amazing. Is is possible to play it with the Modx or in Cubase? Thanks a lot. You are great! Greetings from Spain.
Would you be able to make a video on how to properly setup the Studio with Audio Interface or a Mixer, Studio Monitor Calibration and how to get that Pro Grade Sound with the DAW.
Love your dedication and work for Yamaha and the Montage / MODX Dom. I look forward to more Montage / MODX programming guides from you. I love your previous videos on this topic, and I don't feel as though there is enough content on this. I'd love to hear your thought processes in the future!
Awesome videos you make, really appreciate it ! ... Question : I have the MoDX6, a laptop PC (Good one), studio speakers, and phantom mic. I also have a couple Midi keyboards. I want to know if I really need an external audio interface or can i use just the MoDX built-in audio interface to record on my DAW. If I get an external audio interface, how to disable the internal MoDX audio interface, if needed.... Regards
The full features sequencer is a feature that many have come to expect and it was taking away to get you to use and buy their computer/ipad music software and no other reason. Yamaha has a huge legacy in producing standalone and keyboard sequencers in their over $1000 keyboards, they can and refuse to even when a large number of users continue to ask for it, Users who do not want to be ties to a computer or other device when composing music, to simplify and speed up their workflow as Yamaha has provided for them to do for decades, and almost all other keyboard companies in this price range still allow. Many are also disappointed in the deletion of aftertouch, which would have cost no more than $50 to implement according to some. Hopefully the aftermarket will find a way to add aftertouch to these machines, as it makes a HUGE impact on the playability of many of the best sounds,
I can tell you for a fact that aftertouch would not only add $50 to the price :) Especially high quality aftertouch that Yamaha makes with the likes of the Montage or the MOTIF. This is expensive to implement. And I think Yamaha decided to make this more affordable rather than adding extra cost for a cheap version of it (like the ones you find on other synths that feels so bad it makes no sense it's there to begin with).
My brother bought a midi controller new a few years ago with aftertouch and breath control and 49 velocity keys and 5000 software sounds. it was $399 Aturia keylab 49 www.amazon.com/Arturia-230421-KeyLab-Keyboard-Controller/dp/B00DJ5UJ5E They have updated it now in black. www.arturia.com/products/hybrid-synths/keylab61/overview Aturia Keylab 61, has more software along with tons of tactile buttons and daw control. $499. www.amazon.com/Arturia-61-MKII-Keyboard-Controller/dp/B07FNXVM2F/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1542991424&sr=1-2&keywords=arturia+keylab Black friday the price went down a bit. on the old model www.proaudiostar.com/arturia-keylab-88.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiA597fBRCzARIsAHWby0GE-DnaZLR7dMH4j5fGGZPzbBtvm8GwkKJDc4kDdGfo7PaoV4seSooaAhwDEALw_wcB There are tons of keyboard controllers weith aftertouch in the $300 to $700 range. I am guessing it doers not add any more than $50-$100 to the cost, as well as breath control. Both would increase the expensiveness of the MODX sound quite a bit.
QUESTIONS...how to setup volume on performance to be active on only 1 or 2 sounds bring up volume strings and not the piano ( foot control 1 not 2 ) ....on a side note what a challenge to get master keyboard to play a sound module...it was midi thru Ha
Great video Dom, I wanted to know if you can use an external keyboard with this board. For example, if you have 4 parts to your performance - can you assign only one part to be played on an external keyboard. This is just for more flexibility and room while playing live.
Hi Dom Sigalas, I thought you should talk with Yamaha because a lot of people like the sequencer built in, sure that Cubase, Logic, Live etc are powerful and got a vast arsenal of tools for edition, audio recording etc the most of people know about it ....but some people sometimes love only switch on the keyboard without computer and record and edit basically his production or demo. We know that Modx is a synthesiser but a sequencer built in surely would be a plus for future buyers , we know that Yamaha is owner of Steinberg (Cubase) and surely like to promotion its product , but like a good detail for the costumers would be a built in sequencer. Please Dom talk with Yamaha people to try to put a good sequencer in this instrument and why not in Montage too.
Take a look at the Squarp Pyramid. There are up and coming hardware sequencers out there that would rival anything that Yamaha could dish up for their keyboards at this point.
I too, was one of those put off by the anti-workstation vibe. But I believe you are correct. It is really, obsolete...ugh, I hate admitting that, but it is. Still, those old Motifs are out there, and if you really must have a high end workstation, I'd say Kronos. I like all the lights and gizmos on Montage, but I just don't need quite that much synthesizer. I wanted a smaller, hi tech, legitimate synth, around 1200. The 61 fits that, I get the super knob for soundscapes, and nearly...all the sounds and power of Montage, for half the price, with DRUMS! Montage doesn't go there. A steal in my view, and the product has been ordered. Glad I held out, exactly what I was waiting for. In my opinion, it is a much better value than the Montage, bang for buck.
Thanks Vimla. Nice and helpful video. I'm troubled with one issue though. Here you mention that the synth isn't good with Midi, and yet you recommend Cubase as a sequencer? Do you mean only for sequencing audio?
Hi Omar, don't think I mention the synth is not good with midi :) it actually works great in my experience. What I say is its not a sequencer itself :)
Pleas do a video on the track production functionality..how easy/hard is it to make/create a track..can I make a track and play the modx8 along live..if so how big/small of a track..Thank YOU!
Hey Andrea! The MODX can load all the voices from the Motif XF as they're compatible. Which means you get all the sounds from the Motif AND new killer pianos :)
thank you for answering those questions. I am currently in the process of buying a keyboard I am however stuck between buying a used Motif XF and this MODX. I am a church keyboardist. Could you please recommend to me?
Motif XF is a hi End instrument. It sounds great. Everything is great in Motif. You should try MODX - i personaly don't feel that it is that close to hi end.
A full sequencer will double sales, it is the single most requested feature of the montage and now the modx, but like apple with the headphone jack removed, Yamaha thinks it knows better than it's users, who simply want to do everything on one instrument without a computer needed, like they have for decades. They do not want to be manipulated into buying (renting, yearly update) cubase or other yamaha's based software products for sequencing, and make no mistake. Apple took away the headphone jack to get you tempted to buy their wireless headphones. Yamaha took away the sequencer to get you to be tempted to buy (rent) their cubase software with yearly upgrade cost for a never ending revenue flow. If apple did not take away the headphone jack, your temptation to use bt headphones from them would be much less, so they kind of force you almost. If Yamaha did not take the full featured sequencer away, your temptation to buy (rent) their iPad-window-mac sequencer, sampling, mixing, daw software would be much less, so they kind of force you almost. They like Apple have done all of the computer surveys and bought data mined results showing that the profit forecast is much higher with taking away a loved feature to sell other things in its place, than keeping it. Unfortunately, those algorithms care nothing about the customer and only about profits, customers who are treated with disrespect like that will eventually leave and go elsewhere, or hold on to their old Yamaha gear much longer, and that is what they did in regards to the montage. So Yamaha was forced to offer that sound engine for less $$$ to tempt the holdouts, yet still they have not learned their lesson and still use the take away sequencer feature here to make you buy another feature there tactic. This unit will sell well, at least initially, because of the low price and yamaha motif users wanting that excellent and different montage sound engine and Kronos users wanting it too but not willing to pay Montage prices. Most will use their current keyboard, and will not sell it to control and sequence the MODX, until Yamaha wakes up and put full featured sequencers on the Montage and ModX, like all of their motif, ex, and W series before that, even if they lose some software sequencer sales in the iPad, mac, windows cubase buy rental yearly update scheme. Come on listen to your keyboard buyers Yamaha and not the data mined profit forecast. One can record tracks, and that's it. One may say it is a "sequencer", but without the ability to do anything else than record and export what has been recorded it's a very crude one. What CANNOT be done on a Montage/Modx which could be done on a MOTIF: - cannot edit MIDI notes recorded on a track - cannot edit MIDI events like bank/program change, volume, effect change - cannot copy/paste data from one track to another - no pattern mode (Motif users will appreciate!) - no overview of the 16 tracks to help doing punch in/out recording - cannot loop bars so that one could record a drum track one instrument at a time - cannot trigger the start/record by playing a note on the keyboard, which is an issue to sync the beginning of a track - cannot move recorded notes back or forward - cannot quantize Source: yamahamusicians.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=186&t=11682&sid=ee23cff37a3d7ddfde35ccc886969f52
Again Yamaha have decided what we want(or don't want) - and they're getting it wrong. I'll find another vendor who listens to the customer (rather than the accountants). We want sequencers on these things!
I bought The MODX 8 yesterday, and maybe lack of research on my part or misdirection in marketing; but as you said the MODX is not a workstation. I am really bummed because I was looking for an upgraded Motif (which I’ve had in the past) . I have sounds galore between Logic/Komplete/Korg Gadget , and was hoping to get away from the computer DAW, and back to an all in one device ala early 00s workstations style. Frustratingly the MODX isn’t that . So back to Sweetwater it goes 😪
A simple firmware upgrade could fix that, but Yamaha refuses to listen to many of it's customers. They want keyboardist tied to the computer when putting together and editing songs, or sampling. This they believe will increase their much more profitable software sales, like Cubase, Halion, etc. They did not want to hurt Montage slow sales so they took away the after touch. They now what you want better than you, they think. To there credit, they do not market it as an all in one workstation, and make it known subtly that this is to be used with cubase ai (free temptation to buy an ungraded version of cubase) for making and editing full songs. It does also include a complete audio/midi interface. usb. Does not have ssd sound streaming like kronos on the montage which was a huge shortcoming, nor any fast modern port like thunderbolt 1,2,3, usb, usb3. And for the price it is a great live keyboard.
You mentioned that the highest sample rate is 44.1khz vs 192khz with the Montage. You're speaking of the AWM samples? Is the bit depth also limited to 16 bits vs 24? Generally speaking, do most samples in the sound library for the Montage use 192khz? Are they transcoded to 44.1 for the MODX?
Hi Dom, Thanks for your prompt replies. My last question is does MODX have a pattern/looper reocorder and player like in MOXF though i see the transport controls..? (A couple of MODXs have arrived here in Cosmo music, Canada.. Can't wait to check the babies..)
Dom, having a row of 16 shortcut buttons and 2 buttons for bank up-down Would not make the synth heavier or costly. This was a very bad choice on Yamaha's part, one that had me refrain from purchasing. I woudn't have an issue if the screen was not so laggy, but the screen seems sluggish compared to, say, an ipad, and I would never pick shortcuts on my ipad during a live gig. So yeah. This is why MODX would suck at a live gig and the MOXF still wins there.
Frankly, I'm mostly excited to stop gigging with my Montage. It'll still be my go-to at home, but I love that I can use all the performances I created on the Montage and not get a hernia when loading up my car for a gig.
I just purchased a MoDX and so far so good. The one thing I can not get a grip on is the load/save filing system. It is very confusing to me and the manual just brushes over that operation. It looks like you cannot save a single part only single or multi Performances. Very confusing or different.
Hi Matt, indeed, as of now you cannot save single performances, just library files or user files. If you want to save individual performances I would strongly suggest you try and use Soundmondo which is awesome or John Melas tools which is a very deep and incredibly capable application for doing crazy things with the MODX.
Great informative video, so helpful.. ☺️ Can we create our own arpeggio patterns on this keyboard through any daw like logic or cubase and import them on keyboard? Regards: ☺️
Serious question 30 year Yamaha veteran. Can’t figure out how to program foot control 1 and 2 to be separate of each other controlling volume . Piano volume part 1 fc 1. And string volume part 2 fc2 . When I setup on off switch per part fc 2 controls both I have selected proper fc per part Help performing 100s of shows per year and many month’s stumped Lyle Stang Buffalo NY USA
You've been really consistent with the info roll outs, thank you! My question: can I go part for part while making a beat with my Mpc Renaissance software, making multiple tracks, with different MODX sounds?
Hi Dom! I have a Modx8 connected “via MIDI cable” to a Tc Helicon Voicelive Touch 2 (vocal processor and harmonizer) The problem is that if I use the global transposer on the Modx8, (for example -1) the Tc Helicon does not recognize the notes correctly, the result is that the harmony comes out of tune (at 0) compared to the keyboard (that is -1 instead) However, if I do the same thing with My Nord Stage 3 or My Korg Kronos I don't have this problem... can you help me please? Where is the issue? I think it’s in the Modx It seems like the Modx8 do not sends the cc message of the keyboard transposition at all... but no "midi filter" is set on the Tc Helicon, neither on the Modx But…If I use the Modx set to "0" it works correctly... I need to play "-1 transposed" because for convenience the whole band plays -1 semitone down Thank you very much! Bye
I realize this question has already been addressed in this video(but not to my satisfaction.)This is in regard to sequencing on the MODX...specifically pattern-based song sequencing. In your response to this query, you mentioned that the MODX was not designed to be a workstation.Fair enough,as this keyboard was primarily designed to be a live instrument...however,why did Yamaha bother to put a performance sequencer in it then? The Yamaha PSR series is marketed as a arranger/workstation and yet,it has the SAME performance sequencer and nothing more than that...why?Here's my issue with the absence of an onboard sequencer, which is that since the MODX user cannot use the onboard presets as VST's within Cubase, how can one correct the timing of a song, without the ability to quantize what you record from the MODX,to Cubase??Kurzweil's Forte stage piano was released and marketed as only a performance instrument...but several months later,an onboard song sequencer was added, via an OS update. That said...don't you think it's possible that Yamaha can do the same,in a future OS update?
they can but refuse to for some reason, whoever is at the top has a closed mind on this and will not listen to the customers that want a full sequencer that can be programmed in and added in a future update, as has been done many times before. yes it will take time and they may have to hire so new programmers, but a full sequencer would double sales in my opinion.
Hello Dom! Thank you for your awesome videos & tutorials! Just wanna ask you about your honest opinion of the keybed & key action on the Yamaha ModX8. I am planning to purchase a used one but was never able to demo it. I was wondering if I could prepare myself to practice Piano on it.
Hey Jeremiah! The keybed on the MODX8 is very very decent. I still like the Montage 8 better but the MODX8 will serve you very well for practicing piano for a fraction of the price. Plus you get a full blow synth with it! Out of all the MODX models, I like the 8 the most for sure ;)
Dear Dom. I saw your video on how to record into Cubase DAW. It looks easy, but how is the workflow if you want the record the arpeggiator data into you DAW also? Then you need to enabe arp during recording, and the disabling all arps during replay? Also is it possible to create performance with multiple scenes that would make the Modx work as an arranger keyboard, ie. making an performance working similar to a style in an arranger keyboard? best Regards Thomas
Great video, thank you! Did you try to A/B the same sounds with Montage? If yes, did you hear any difference? I am asking because i saw a video where a guy from Yamaha said that the DA converters on the Montage are better than MODX. Also the 44.1Khz vs 192 should impact the sound as well. Not sure if that's the processing frequency or just the output. If it's only the output the difference should not be noticeable. Thank you!
Thanks a lot! First impression is that the Montage sounds a little bit richer to my ears. That being said, I am going to perform a null test to see if this can be proven :)
I would like to use it as a slave keyboard in my studio using Cubase and a different master. I can’t set a performance with the same midi channel for all the sounds. Any advice? That is important to me just because i got a lot of keyboards and I would like to manage every synth without losing the beauty of his own multi performances
Great videos Dom, thank you for all of the hard work you're doing to promote the MODX. Question re polyphony: Am I right in saying one voice can have 8 elements in it? If this is the case, if I play one note with one voice that uses all 8 elements, will that take up 1 note of polyphony or 8?
Hi Jordan glad you find the videos useful ;) Not sure if this is documented anywhere but every element is pretty much like a synth on its own with its own filters, lfo's eq etc. Every element should occupy one note of polyphony- not that I have ever ran out of polyphony to fully test this :)
It feels really solid here. It's not bendy or crackling of any sort. That being said I am sure that the Montage could survive a hammer hit, it's just built like a tank-but that comes at a cost (and I mainly mean the weight) :) I would take bit more care of the MODX, after all, plastic is plastic.
I’m also disappointed with the lack of aftertouch & would’ve have liked a sequencer, but the sounds, synth engines and features you get for the very reasonable amount of money it costs, it’s a fair compromise.
Good video, thanks. Were you able to wrangle anything out of Yamaha about the possibility of a rack version? Of either MODX or Montage (although let's call it something cool like TG-OmenA).. I think a lot of us would be interested in these engines without a keyboard attached. And I mean a rack maintaining the touch screen and a decent amount of controls, not a programming through a keyhole style affair
Thanks for asking! I think a lot of people would be interested in a more friendly alternative to an FS1r in the rackable desktop format, so hopefully they at least consider it :) Yamaha have seemed a lot like a sleeping giant in recent years, so hopefully with that IdeaScale site they will start to realise what people want from them at bit more. Using their VA tech to make a CS-80 inspired synth with analogue filters and the poly aftertouch keyboard from the top StageA electone still seems a total no brainer..
First thank you for your efforts doing this amazing video.. I am already late.. my question is: can u do a microtuning? i mean for Indian, Turkish, middle eastern music we have to adjust the tunes for one or two notes.. so is there a way to do that and control the scale for the keyboard?
Great videos! But what I need is how to everything you're saying in ABLETON LIVE. I don't see anything on how to do things in Ableton. so I can use lets say Keyscape AND MODX 8. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Rick
Cheers, Dom, nice job. I'd like to know if my performance data from my MOX would load into a MODX ? I've been editing performances for the past 6 yrs for my duo, not keen to have to start again from scratch ( tho' MODX sounds are probably higher quality than the MOX, which is quite old now)
Hi Dom! I really hope you see this question, cause i can't find the answer anywhere on the internet. So i'm about to purchase a MODX8 and i want to record vocals aswell. I want to know if it's possible to pluck a microphone into the MODX8 and then record in a DAW directly from the MODX? Or do you need a mixer and all this, to create music with your vocals? And is it then possible to add different effects to the voice in the MODX or can you only do this in the DAW? Thanks for great videos!
You can record your vocals through a MODX- but only with a dynamic microphone. For a condenser you need to plugin a 48V phantom power preamp in the MODX inputs. The audio in input is sent through USB to the DAW :)
All synthesizers on this level need a tutorial manual. Thanks for another useful video. I may own a ModX6 tomorrow.
I think Yamaha may have simplified that process down to more practical needs and features without losing the powerful capabilities.
thanks for the mention Dom, this was a very helpful video and a great idea. thanks.
Cheers, Woody, lots of love :)
Woody 😋 your cheeks 😊😂😂😂 really nice
Love the transparency. Your sincere and thoughtful answers are greatly appreciated, Just bought my modx8 last night and enjoying the day exploring the board! Thank you!
Hello Dom!
My name is Danny from Israel,
and I really like your channel!
No se déjame ver que puedo hacer😅
Step sequencers, that is, but either way they are not multitimbral etc
And one thing you'd expect from a DX lineage synth is to have aftertouch.
That said, it looks like a very interesting synth!!! And might cure my thirst for the MONTAGE X)
This is me. I unfortunately did buy and found out lack of sequencer
Sapiens Strength Return it
Waiting for mine to arrive as we speak. It's out for delivery, hope it arrives soon. You have me pumped to start playing. Now if only I could get my Fairlight working again I'd be really all set!
This is the most helpful comparison of the MODX and Montage
I am buying the Montage 8 anyway... thanks for this amazing guide Dom!
63 lbs for the flagship vs 30 lbs for the MODX8. Would love the Montage, but guess which one I'm hauling around to gigs?
Dom, I really enjoy the videos. I get my MODX tomorrow. I have a couple questions that you can maybe do videos about:
Can you show us how to create a new rhythm sequence?
Show how to import sample files or sequence files from a DAW ( if possible).
What file formats does MODX support?
I saw your Arturia software synth video. Is it possible to import Arturia samples/sounds into the MODX?
Thanks, George S
With the update 3.0 for Montage and 2.00.1 for the MODX there is now a nice sequencer.
They did cut out after touch which is a significant feature of the DX series.
get a used dx7 and midi in to the modx. lolz.
so 2 purchases instead of one, the used one makes up for what is lacking on the brand new one lolz.
@Warp pretty sure if it's lacking the hardware, it's going to lack the software to interpret that. My Electro 5D Lacks a pitch Bend and mod wheel the software to register what to do so slaving it to another board with those components wont work.
I read a review that said it would accept incoming aftertouch midi cc messages.
@@warp9988 great! At least Yamaha didn't throw us a full out curveball with this one
My pleasure :) Thanks for watching !
I ordered today. Hope the Modx driver will coexist with the Montage. :-)
Thank you for the video.
How do you feel, is it still relevaant synthesizer in 2021, or there are something newer around?
please make a video DAW Modx intregration. keyword MODX Connect

Dom Sigalas, you are the dude!
Loved the video, how is the durability of the touchscreen? Please tell
Just like wired headphones without dongles attached are still very useful and practical.
truth is apple wants you to buy wireless headphones theirs $$
Yamaha wants you to get hooked on iPad and computer sequencers and upgrade yearly $$$ basically renting their software for a never ending revenue flow.
I am purchasing the 8, this coming weekend
Great video. How many fx can you have running on the Modx simultaneously as compared to the Montage? Cheers.
Thank you so much for the response and for the information 👍🏾. Btw, I’m ordering my MODX7 tomorrow!
Awesome! I too ordered the MODX7. Should arrive on Friday!
192-NOTE TOTAL POLYPHONY
MODX features 128-note stereo AWM2 polyphony and 64-notes of FM-X polyphony. Due to the unique architecture of MODX and MONTAGE, this polyphony is always available without latency or compromising other features.
Do you have a tutorial explaining how to use the mail features of modx or some course O can take to learn how to take advantage of all the features it has ?
But how does the 8, in particular, compare to the montage, in terms of keyboard?
Excellent, thanks for all your hard work. I've ordered an MODX6 :-)
Thanks a lot my friend :) Enjoy your new baby :)
Hello dear Dom How to perform each part without interruption in the live set without the gap between changes.thank you.
Would you be able to make a video on how to properly setup the Studio with Audio Interface or a Mixer, Studio Monitor Calibration and how to get that Pro Grade Sound with the DAW.
Great and useful video, thanks a lot! And if I'm not wrong and the surname is Greek, yassu to you, Dom!! 🇬🇷☺️
Love your dedication and work for Yamaha and the Montage / MODX Dom. I look forward to more Montage / MODX programming guides from you. I love your previous videos on this topic, and I don't feel as though there is enough content on this. I'd love to hear your thought processes in the future!
modx VS Motif XS8 which one is better?
Awesome videos you make, really appreciate it ! ... Question : I have the MoDX6, a laptop PC (Good one), studio speakers, and phantom mic. I also have a couple Midi keyboards. I want to know if I really need an external audio interface or can i use just the MoDX built-in audio interface to record on my DAW. If I get an external audio interface, how to disable the internal MoDX audio interface, if needed....
Regards
How kind of you. Very helpful for me. Thanks!
I've just buyed this monster after your videos, it comes tumorrow, let's see!!
Have fun Oscar!
The full features sequencer is a feature that many have come to expect and it was taking away to get you to use and buy their computer/ipad music software and no other reason.
Yamaha has a huge legacy in producing standalone and keyboard sequencers in their over $1000 keyboards, they can and refuse to even when a large number of users continue to ask for it,
Users who do not want to be ties to a computer or other device when composing music, to simplify and speed up their workflow as Yamaha has provided for them to do for decades, and almost all other keyboard companies in this price range still allow.
@@DomSigalas source please
I have had quality aftertiu h in many under $1000 keyboards some by Yamaha
And in $389 after based keyboard controllers
My brother bought a midi controller new a few years ago with aftertouch and breath control and 49 velocity keys and 5000 software sounds.
it was $399

There are tons of keyboard controllers weith aftertouch in the $300 to $700 range.
Although it has a 16 track sequencer and pattern designer with version 2.5 OS, love my MODX6
Naw bro
The only thing that I can think of that kind of kills it for me, is that the pitch bender and mod wheels are up top.
Im willing to get used it😀
@@calebreid4398
I hear ya.
Hi Dom, thank you for your videos. The quality of piano sounds in modx is the same or better than moxf?
Hey Andrea! The MODX can load all the voices from the Motif XF as they're compatible. Which means you get all the sounds from the Motif AND new killer pianos :)
in my opinion it doesn't feel semi-weighted, but i like it anyway
thank you for answering those questions. I am currently in the process of buying a keyboard I am however stuck between buying a used Motif XF and this MODX. I am a church keyboardist. Could you please recommend to me?
does your church need awesome FM 80s sounds?
go with the Motif XF… this is ny bread and butter keyboard.. i would buy this later and add it to my rig…. secondary keyboard….
Motif XF is a hi End instrument. It sounds great. Everything is great in Motif.
You should try MODX - i personaly don't feel that it is that close to hi end.
Hey Dom:Is there a way to turn down the USB backing track internally. Not the Volume knob?I want to play on top of the track on my MODX
most excrllent video! thank you for being so detailed
What CANNOT be done on a Montage/Modx which could be done on a MOTIF:
- cannot edit MIDI notes recorded on a track
- cannot edit MIDI events like bank/program change, volume, effect change
- cannot copy/paste data from one track to another
- no pattern mode (Motif users will appreciate!)
- no overview of the 16 tracks to help doing punch in/out recording
- cannot loop bars so that one could record a drum track one instrument at a time
- cannot trigger the start/record by playing a note on the keyboard, which is an issue to sync the beginning of a track
- cannot move recorded notes back or forward
- cannot quantize

Again Yamaha have decided what we want(or don't want) - and they're getting it wrong. I'll find another vendor who listens to the customer (rather than the accountants).
We want sequencers on these things!
Just buy an MPC and you will have what you want plus sampling.
jimpollard007 Sorry Jim, you’re wrong To this day I still fill out the surveys.
Thanks Dom… Very good video! My question ( very simple ) : MODX8 has plastic cover or metal?
Could you do a video showing creative ways and simple vocoder use? Thankyou
Really sorry it's not what you needed but yes it is really not meant to be a workstation.
And for the price it is a great live keyboard.
buy a motif xf8......you will love it.
Gee Sapiens... I bet you wish you kept it now that the sequencer update has arrived (Oct 2019).
Hi Dom,
Thanks for your prompt replies. My last question is does MODX have a pattern/looper reocorder and player like in MOXF though i see the transport controls..?
(A couple of MODXs have arrived here in Cosmo music, Canada.. Can't wait to check the babies..)
Hi am planning to buy this board but only question is can I import wave loops and some backing parts and trigger them live or not?
I share the same feelings :)
Thank you so much, Dom Sigalas for all your great videos. I am most definitely a fan of your's

My question: can I go part for part while making a beat with my Mpc Renaissance software, making multiple tracks, with different MODX sounds?
Got all my questions answered in one video. Thank you!
I think it’s in the Modx
It seems like the Modx8 do not sends the cc message of the keyboard transposition at all... but no "midi filter" is set on the Tc Helicon, neither on the Modx
But…If I use the Modx set to "0" it works correctly...
I need to play "-1 transposed" because for convenience the whole band plays -1 semitone down
Thank you very much!

Thank you for your opinion Dom!!
Appreciate it.
NO Sampler? No thanks.
Thanks for the lessons, albeit, I can’t seem to download the cubaise ai,
You're so humble. God bless
I think this a montage killer. It’s a business thing.
Reynald Guibone LoL
No after touch or full sequencer?
I'm suprised they kept the headphone jack.
How to arrange patches for a live set? And switch between patches easily.
That flicking light will drive me nuts.
How is that plastic casing? is it high impact or does it feel like it will break if you drop it? build quality is important.
Do you think, That the MODX8 is a good alternativ to the CP88?
Hi Wagoo, we've asked about this and currently there are no plans for a rack version I'm afraid. I guess we have to wait and see what happens :)
Thanks for asking! I think a lot of people would be interested in a more friendly alternative to an FS1r in the rackable desktop format, so hopefully they at least consider it :)
Yamaha have seemed a lot like a sleeping giant in recent years, so hopefully with that IdeaScale site they will start to realise what people want from them at bit more.
Yes you can!

Cheers, Dom, nice job. I'd like to know if my performance data from my MOX would load into a MODX ? I've been editing performances for the past 6 yrs for my duo, not keen to have to start again from scratch ( tho' MODX sounds are probably higher quality than the MOX, which is quite old now)
Hi Kit, I don't have a MOX at hand to try this out, but I guess if you can load the MOX sounds into a MOXF then it could be possible?

I wonder in you can use ist with Cubase on an iPad (class complient ?) behause in that case you can use it better on Stage... (also on iPhone)...
