    Oh my goodness, I thought that last dress from Fibre Mood looked fantastic on you! I know you don’t like it, but it really is nice. We all see things differently, don’t we?

    I've had luck with Itch to Stitch patterns. I've recently made the Glenelly top and the Bonn shirt. I'm getting ready to make the Balboa skirt next. BTW I like your new back ground. 😊 And all your makes are lovely.

    I haven't sewn enough to compare companies yet, but I have really loved the pattern emporium patterns I have. Kate has a similar body type as you, so you might like them. She has great videos showing them styled in different fabrics.

      love PE! i haven't sewn enough of their patterns yet to make my list but maybe next year.

    Thank you for sharing your fave indie companies. I too love the instructional details in Helen’s Closet patterns. I seem to go in phases with pattern companies depending on the season. I love Muna & Broad, Sew Liberated, and Sonya Phillips 100 Acts of Sewing. The further I get in my sewing journey the more I realize I prefer to purchase from companies that have excellent support and draft to fit my body.

    • @knottygnome

      yes, it's great to have so many choices that work for each of us as individuals. thanks for sharing!

    If I only had one pattern company to sew from for the rest of my life, it would be Closet Core, hands down. I am always impressed with the drafting, the professional finish and the unique design details. The instructions are always excellent, too. I do have to make some fit adjustments to their patterns, but it's worth it for me.
    I also love Jennifer Lauren Handmade and Cashmerette for their bust cup size options, but I know that Cashmerette only cater to the fuller bust. I really need to total up the patterns that I've made because I might have made more from some companies than I realize!

      it's so great when you find a company whose designs speak to you! i'm glad that you've found yours.

    My favorite is Style Arch - the designs are so modern and fit my body with no adjustments - I know that the instructions are so basic, but if ever stuck, there are tutorials on U Tube, plus the staff are super helpful

    One of my favorite indie pattern companies is Love Notions . . . especially the Laundry Day Tee. This pattern adapts well to a wide range of wear - a tee-shirt, t-shirt dress, midi dress and a nightgown that moves into stay-at-home house dress. I've adapted it for woven fabrics as well as the intended knit pattern. I've adapted it to a flared skirting dress and a slimmer variation than called for on the pattern. It's an easy to cut and sew everyday pattern. Thank you for sharing your favorites and inviting me to branch out into different areas.

    Very interesting, thank you for sharing.
    I think besides color, contrast, details, it is important to consider the overall impression. After trying many different outfits, I try to avoid looking "bottom heavy". So I avoid lighter colored bottoms. I would consider as you sew new pieces, try to come up with a couple of basic bottoms in your best dark neutrals. Years ago I made a dark denim A-line skirt and I have worn it so much, year round (so warm with fleece lined tights and a slip!).
    I sympathize with the need for warmth!
    Anyway, I would encourage you to try an A-line skirt that is not too wide and flows, but rather structured yet feminine, hitting somewhere below mid calf. You could just drape some fabric on to see how it suits you. But finding the right skirt has been really helpful for me. It ticks off the femininity checkbox, and I can have fun with different tops.
    The turtlenecks layered under shirts and dresses looked really good on you!

    I think that people often forget that "size-inclusive" includes both sides of the spectrum. I think it's great that Jennifer Lauren offers individual cup sizes. The skirt you were wearing with that first top - I think that's the same fabric I used for my Vali dress 😊 Regarding ironing - have you ever used Downy Wrinkle Release? THAT'S how I iron (outside of pressing seams as I sew) 🤣 It works like a charm! I like hearing your thoughts on why you like each pattern company. FibreMood is also one of my favorites but I feel the same way as you - once my subscription is up I'll be canceling. I really like the Aila (?) you made - I'll have to check that one out with. my next set of credits. I like this video concept - I might "steal" the idea 😊. But obviously Style Arc pops to the top for me, despite their horrific instructions. I also think Seamwork and Fibremood might be in the top for me - but I'll need to do a further evaluation 🤣

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'll have to look into the wrinkle release. yes, i think we used the same fabric (did you get yours from Stylemaker?). i made that skirt last summer-ish.

    Style Arc for the designs is my fav but the instructions, 😱

    • @knottygnome

      i think it's a testament to their drafting that so many love them despite the instruction deficiencies.

    Hey Sara, Thanks for such an awesome in-depth, indie company review. I love your style 💞 and your makes as always!
    Wait, what you don't iron 😂, I love to but I have a steam iron because it's faster. I may get that SOl Edie, I like my Gable but want to try it again.

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i always burn myself when i iron. i can use the iron for sewing all day long but when i try to use it on finished items i'm mega clumsy.

    I really like the fit of the deer dress. Maybe the reason you don’t wear it is because of the color. I’m also a winter and made a dress that color when I was in high school. Every single teacher called me up to tell me that it was ok to stay home when I was sick.

    • @lisemac6763
      @lisemac6763 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You wouldn’t have any problems with them. Not as detailed as Helen’s Closet but not as sparse as Style Arc. They just work for me with few adjustments.

    I like Helen's Closet as well. I have been looking at True Bias but have not bought a pattern yet. My favorites so far are Love Notions and Style Arc. And since I am towards the opposite end of the size range from you, I also like Cashmerette. It is good to learn of other Indie companies to get some new ideas. Thanks, Sara.

    Great round up. Those makes are very nice especially the button up tops. I don’t know in what country these indies are made but did you notice if any of your favorites were from the same area of the world? I always wondered if the self-taught vs university/design school-taught had any major distinctions in their instruction delivery and pattern drafting, just random sewing thoughts 🤣. Thanks for sharing.
