Nothing smells better than old books. There is something about the smell of old books that is calming and serene.
It's the lignin. It's a chemical polymer in wood (and thus, in paper). When it breaks down, it makes the paper turn yellow, for one thing, but also one of the smaller compounds it breaks down into is shaped (and thus carries a smell) remarkably like vanillin (the most notable chemical compound found in, well, vanilla beans).

No, I get ya... it's a musty smell and dusty too, with crispy pages - but for some weird reason, old moldy, dusty tomes smell delightful!
P.S. I never thought vanilla - now, I'll be digging upstairs for my oldest books to see if it's like vanilla...
@@Anastas1786 Cool science fact! That explains it well, as I love the smell of both old books and natural vanilla.
i don't know if anyone has said this yet, but there's actually a very similar chemical compound in paper as in vanilla that comes out as the paper gets old and starts to break down. so old books are just objectively nice smelling!

I may be repeating myself, but you are dressed and look like my mom age 17 working as an inspector on b-29 bombers. She wore clothing much like this, and went to work in the factory during WWII.

I wish sewing makes a comeback for younger generations. I really like to see younger ladies to sew like this.
Sandra Solaligue-Pérez I learned sewing by watching what my mom and even my dad were doing. My older siblings never really bothered to do the same so especially my sister never learned how to sew properly. She taught herself at 25 when she was pregnant with her second child. Even our now 66 year old mother still learns new things, that's just how life works. You can still learn sewing if you really want to learn! I taught myself how to knit because there is just no left handed person in my family that could have shown me when I was younger. So I learned how to do it like a right handed person would to it first and switched everything around after I got the hang of it. Now I can create patterns other people have to turn their knitted piece around in order to create them just because I can knit with both of my hands.

Old book smell is the best, it feels like you can finally come home and rest your old soul, discover new adventures and treasures. It's the best to be able to touch and experience history. Nothing weird about it

Yes! Love the “old book” smell. My husband and I once did a blind test to see if you could smell the difference genres, and you can! I always recognize an old Stephen King from the eighties. 😉

Really love the all-in-one lapel/facing/button placket thing on this blouse. Also love how you've stored your hats along that section of wall. Out of the way, but still in sight to appreciate. And yes, definitely, Old Book smell is the best. I buy all of my books second hand and I love the smell and all the stories that come with them, like old plane tickets or love notes or personalized book plates. I love books that have stories beyond the one the author wrote.

As a teenager I watched a lot of movies from the 40’s. I really like your videos. My mother made my clothes beautifully. I am not very good at sewing, but I did make my daughters first communion dress.

I love the old book smell! I used to work in a library, and I loved walking through the books and embracing the smell! There is a set of fragrances my friend wears that also smell like old books. Love it!

Love, love, love the jungle fabric. Making a shirt is always a bit of a palaver and takes much longer than simply running up a wee top. I really enjoy your videos Angela. And I would love 'old book' smell more if it didn't make me sneeze.
After you wash and iron the fabric, fold it inside-out to lay out and cut. That way you can easily mark everything on back of fabric. It won't be seen on front after sewing and it is really a lot easier to pin darts & seams. We used tailor tacks to mark buttonholes & button placement, also easier from back. Fabric is only folded with design out so it can be easily seen by customers. My mother would use, on hand muslin, for interfacings, or a piece of the project fabric, if it didn't show through.

I LOVE these 1940's vlogs you have been doing lately!! These are costumes you can actually wear and they are so much fun! I also loved the 1950's dresses you were doing as well, if not more. You started a yellow gingham dress that I loved...it may have had a purple tie to go along with it. (I find the 1950's dresses are more forgiving to my hips and thighs.) I always look forward to your videos and instagram. When people tell me I am talented, I say, "I think maybe I am just a worker bee, because anyone can learn to sew. We grow with just doing and doing." I think we all respect your hard work which has lead you to become quite talented over these past 5 years! What sets you apart is that you are an excellent teacher. You inspire people to want to sew with how simple you make the process. Your material is easy to grasp as you cover each step and explain patterns. I foresee you having your own studio one day and having your own books and videos. For now, we will enjoy these!
I think these shirts would look AMAZING with dungarees, for a more modern look. I prefer new book smell but have definitely had this exact conversation with friends who prefer old book smell.

I love the shirts! And old book smell. I have a candle that is called Old Books. It's amazing. I burn it whenever I'm studying. As an online student, that's the closest I'll come to a "real" college experience.

My great grandmother had a large library and i inherited part of it, so now when i walk into my library, that smell takes me back to my childhood
I love old books smell too - and old books! I remember my copy of one of James Fennimore Cooper’s books had the cover and beginning pages falling off in my hand. But, I just held it open in my hand and kept my nose to the page because some old books are just that good.

I adore that jungle fabric, and I had to blink at the green near the end -- I bought the same fabric in purple for scrubs recently, and didn't expect to recognize it here. LOL! Your videos are so enjoyable to watch, and even more so -- inspirational. Keep up the wonderful work and know that others are watching, enjoying, and learning from all of them! I do love the smell of old books, too. You are not alone. It started very young for me; I remember the smell from the first library Mom took me to in the early to mid 1950s!

Love that you use a cork board and thumb tacs rather than pins. Seems like it would stop the puckers that pins can cause when tracing patterns.

I love the scent of old books too. Sometimes I get a sense of that particular time period and although it may have been a little harsh it still had something good happening about it .
Fun fact: the old book smell is the breaking down of the glue in the spine of the book. The glue was made of certain materials containing vanillin (same as found in vanilla). That mixed with a chemical similar to coffee and the breaking down of the paper itself (tree-based), what you're smelling is similar to a wooden latte.
Woah I never thought about using thumbtacks in foam for cutting out patterns!! I gotta try that but idk where I'm gonna get the foam lol
