    Thank you very much for your work ! In my Family we have two uncleared faiths. One from 1914 in WW1 on Western Front (Flandern). He was 18 y.o. when he was lost. He‘s mother, his brother and both sisters tried everything two find something out about his faith. Without any result. They died in the 80th and hoped until their end to find out...
    The other one was lost in July 1944 at the eastern front. Missed in action too. From his 4 children 3 are still alive.
    They don‘t speak about, but I can feel their deeply wish to find out, where their father is buried.
    I can imagine what the familie of this Officer in this video will feel, after they will hear, that he was found.
    The result of your work is the best medicine for many souls. Its blessing

    There are Russian groups who devote many of the annual holidays in helping to recover the fallen soldiers of WW2 with hundreds found each year in eastern Europe. It is nice to know and very comforting to any surviving relatives to see the remains of their loved ones are dealt with in the utmost respect.

    That was a German Heer first lieutenant, as his rank insignia showed just one diamond. Then he must have been a young man. It is possible he may have been previously a ranker. Deep into the war, the German Army, like all the other major belligerents, was forced to promote sergeants into second lieutenants due to the extremely high attrition of company grade junior officers. The excavator said the dead man's teeth showed a cap. That would have been expensive dental work back in his day as it still is today. Either the German Army provided the dental service as he was a commissioned officer, or else he had the dental cap done before he entered military service, which possibly meant his parents were financially well-off. Fortunately they found his military metal ID tag on him. Odd, though, standard German practice was to bend and break off the bottom portion and turn it in up the chain of command. But in the chaotic conditions of the war in Russia, especially from 1943 onward, it's no doubt he was hurriedly buried. As the excavator thinks, deadly enemy shrapnel may have killed the junior lieutenant.

    • @chairmanalf7856
      @chairmanalf7856 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      With a single star he would have been an Oberleutnant (senior Leutnant) the rank below a Hauptmann (captain), who would have had two stars on his epaulette. A junior Leutnant would not have had any stars on his silver braid epaulettes.

    • @jeffyoung60
      @jeffyoung60 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@chairmanalf7856 You're right, Alf. I was thinking of the modern Germany Army officer rank insignia. Three diamonds is captain. Two is first lieutenant. One is second lieutenant or just, lieutenant. The modern German Army follows the Western European officer ranks organization. There is no rank for, senior lieutenant, which some armies use. Thanks, Alf.

      Никто его не хоронил, а был артиллерийский обстрел и погибли офицеры Вермахта.Их присыпало землей от взрыва. Две половинки жетона значит некому было отломить нижнюю половинку. И только, благодаря, поисковикам обнаружили его растлевшее тело. Есть ,наверное,специалисты, которые могут восстановить его имя. В России есть специалисты, которые восстанавливают размытые смертные записки. Читают их и восстанавливают имена и место рождения погибших и находят их родных.Мой дед погиб на Ленинградском фронте(ст.Погостье район Мга .Мгинский район) в звании капитана в феврале 1942 года в возрасте 29лет и был,, похоронен,, в боевом окопе вместе со своими боевыми товарищами.Были бои и хоронить убитых было некогда и некому.

      Appears to have been a Technical Sargeant as the collar insignia did not possess any oak leaves as would have been on an Oberleutnant. Technical Sargeant only had one diamond on the epaulette, same as an Oberleutnant, but of a different material.

      @@winstonsmith8441 I'm curious where this is at. Many times the Germans were forced to scrape together 'emergency' divisions of support/rear area troops with little or no combat experience who more often than not were simply cannon fodder. Probably a defensive machine gun position he died in; it was simply pushed in with dirt and he was left as he fell. Probably overrun before his ID disc could be broken in half. The Soviet and German shell casings seem to testify to it changing hands during a Soviet attack-he was stripped of all valuables and weapons.

    From the position of the skeleton, it's clear he died suddenly and was not buried. The dog tag is not broken in half meaning he was missing in action and presumed killed. The depth of the grave is quite shallow which means he must have been killed in a trench. The German officer is finally found after 77 years and he will get a proper burial. I read a family story where a very young man was conscripted by the German army, and before he was hauled away his “old man” asked to have a few private words with him.
      This was allowed.
      The young man’s father whisper firmly in his ears that he ordered his son to SURVIVE and to surrender immediately to the first Americans he saw, his father wanted him to come home ALIVE.
      The young man did exactly as his dad told him. He survived and surrendered to the first American he saw.
      His Grand son posted that story on a TH-cam Channel devoted to WW2.

    Awesome work as always. Guys like you & others who do WW2 metal detecting do awesome work. Obviously it is a passion to seek out & find actual lost & forgotten history. That is a thrill usually only claimed for archaeologists who get wreck rights in the oceans or for countries with ancient cultures who commission archaeologists & schools tondo all the work. The insane scope of WW2 afford regular citizens the ability to go out & find hidden history. It is really amazing to be able to go out to a former battlefield & find lost relics, artifacts & remains. When you’re at those sites it must be mind blowing thinking about how where you are standing could have been the site of intense fighting decades before. It’s incredible to think that some item you are digging up may have been last touched in 1944 or 1945. Unreal.
    Historical artifacts are great obviously but finding remains is not only a sobering reminder of the horrors of war & of our violent history but important to our collective human history & restoring the remains of those missing & killed in action. When you look at the casualty numbers of WW2, the amount of missing in action on all sides is mind boggling. Hundreds of thousands to millions of lost souls. To think that 70+ years ago a young soldiers life was cut short to die & be left there for decades . It is a beautiful thing to be able to allow the fallen to be found & retrieved so they can be reinterred with dignity & possibly returned home and/or to family. So not only are your efforts important historically but the whole human aspect of everything involved is vital to all of us. It helps us to record & remember history. You are fixing the wrongs of the past that can be fixed if possible. That matters.
    Thanks for all of your effort & hard work. I am sure these soldiers are looking down from heaven pleased that their remains can possibly be returned to family or at least home in a proper way instead of being left as they were on the day they died in battle. When you think of the context & all the history, it must be overwhelming. Besides being passionate about metal detecting & discovering historical artifacts, the human element to all of this must be a motivating factor.
    Thanks again. Oh yeah, after watching your videos I was struck by a couple of other things. First, even after decades in the dirt & elements so many items are relatively well preserved & in good condition. Many of those areas must have soil & area conditions that are conducive to preserving the artifacts. Also, many of the excavations are in the woods or in the fields. Obviously you encounter water in those areas especially after digging but in many areas you aren’t near a large body of water like a lake or river. It is crazy how much the land can change after a few decades even without major water currents changing the topography or landscape. It’s mind blowing that many remains seem to be found as they were laying in 1943, 1944 or 1945. It’s crazy to think how over time a flat area without many trees or water current can be buried quickly by blowing leaves, dirt etc. You guys seem to end up digging several feet down usually & it’s not just old covered up foxholes. It’s incredible how erosion & weather can help swallow up the history laying on the flat ground rather quickly. The ground there used to be lower there decades before yet time can quickly change the whole topography & bury & swallow an entire area up which ends up hiding & preserving it for decades. I being this up because think about sayin a park or yard across the street. Maybe you’ve lived there 20 years. When there are humans maintaining an area it can stay the same for years. The field behind me hasn’t changed since I was a kid. Out in the wild though nature & the weather can quickly change an entire countryside or landscape in a few years. You must wonder what it must have looked like in a spot in 1945 compared to the moment you unearthed it. That is what is so mind blowing. Some areas & artifacts that have been unearthed & found may have not seen the sun since 1945.
    Anyway, thanks again. i can write a lot. I’m in the US but it makes me jealous that you get to go out there in Europe & metal detect & excavate old WW2 battlefields. Keep up the good work!
