    For anyone looking for some more experience with Bernhard's Door, I suggest you read "House of Leaves" It's sorta based around this whole concept of some hallway / door being present in a house that wasn't there before. And the book is filled with mystery and this atmosphere that goes through your skin

    • @floppavevo5920

      @V0ID_X5 It really isn't as difficult as it seems. It's sure as hell daunting, but after the first few chapters, it becomes a breeze. Also, don't feel bad for skimming some sections.

    • @the_real_Kurt_Yarish
      @the_real_Kurt_Yarish ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@V0ID_X5It's really not. People tend to exaggerate the complexity of HoL somewhat because it's usually their first exposure to that kind of reading experience, but really it's no more dense of a read than, say, something like _The Lord of the Rings_ or perhaps even a book in the _Eragon_ series (though that later example may be over-simplifying it somewhat). The hard part is the multilayered narrative combined with meta-narrative elements, esotericism, intentional obfuscation, poetic writing, and of course the transformative arrangement of text.
      It's a book, about a book, written by and also about a fucked-up guy who knew a blind old guy who died, whom before death happened to be writing a book (amongst other things), about a diegetically fictional (maybe?) scholarly essay that's written as if non-fiction, about a documentary that's about a House with impossible features and that House's relation to the people who happen to live within it. And it's not just written with all these pieces as a whole, but with each piece also being it's own thing. Really, you're reading five stories at once, which are all individual but are also closely related and one of which happens to be the fact that you're (as in the IRL reader, "you") reading the other four stories at all. If you can get your head around those concepts, the actually act of reading the book and parsing the stories isn't any more difficult than most books of a similar size.

      I have experienced slight time diliation when using mushrooms and LSD but it was very slight. I think an interesting component of time diliation is the fact that when your content in the moment time moves in a faster experienced scale whilst when your bored it moves considerably slower, thus this also reminds me of the Chinese water droplet torture which apparently had different scales of severity. An example being whether or not the water that was dropped was on a consistent beat or at random intervals. Apparently that torture technique is considerably more psychologically nafarious dependant on if the torturee can anticipate and count out when the water drops in their body and the position as well which also falls along the scale of time and the fact if you follow mathematically consistant intervals its less stressful

    you should play a game named "Gloomwood".Its about exploring a cold desolate and abandoned world set in the UK,You have to be stealthy and you walk through dark corridors and such trying not be seen by any of the guards while going behind them and backstabbing them.There is the occasional zone where its completly centered about horror which should be right up your alley.The game is a stealth like game and is an "immersive sim",which means its focused on immersing the player into the world with many points and details using notes and such.

    44:44 I definitely see why you might mention that. Spoilers for At the Mountains of Madness for anyone who hasn't read it.
    At The Mountains of Madness, once the scientists cross over the Antarctic mountain range and find that alien civilization, it's like they travelled to a new dimension. The creatures such as the Elder Things and their "world" are utterly alien. And so, in some ways, it's both horrifying and fascinating with the exploration of those ruins that are older than mankind and will stand long after humanity. You get the same thing here with The Door in the Basement.
    Yet this has almost small child's nightmare like aspect to it, with the replacement of joints with mannequin parts. How architecture of bleak appearances seamlessly intertwined with this realm of almost alien things mismatched with the familiar.
    Like At the Mountains of Madness, if this world was explained fully, it would stop being unknown and lose its luster.

    Another thing I think the lack of music does is actively build the atmosphere. It ties it closer to reality, where you wouldn't have a soundtrack to cover audio cues. It captures the paranoia of the woods at night when everything goes dead silent, and then you hear shifting, and you can't quite tell if those are your footsteps or someone else's.

    I saw the demo version of this years ago, and this is both a massive expansion to that and very different in a lot of places. None of the regular humans attacked you in the demo, though it also starts right before the spider section. Of course, that means that when actual monsters show up now, it's even more of a surprise.
    Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure it's safe to stand still and watch The Man With No Face instead of immediately sprinting into the spider, as doing so nets you a preview of something blatantly supernatural you don't wanna' deal with. Though I'm pretty sure it doesn't do its speed-up gimmick until it actually starts chasing you.

    I mean it's hardly feaux PS1 just the kighting alone would crash anything before 360 atleast not to mention the 4k textures abd high poly models, if you removed the filter this game would look great. Abd as always a super detailed Librarian video goes well :)

    • @Dogman_35
      @Dogman_35 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The textures aren't 4k. They're actually super low-res, like downright pixel art. The resolution of the _game_ just masks that fact. It's part of the reason for the low resolution, making you imagine detail that isn't actually there. Enhanced by the hi-fi lighting effects, which make it look even more realistic despite being both low poly and low res. Which is a technique I absolutely _love,_ and am trying to do myself in some personal projects
      EDIT: Lost in Vivo did this too, although not quite to the same level. That one was more overtly retro themed, while this one is going full force with the faux realism look.

  • @theuncalledfor
    @theuncalledfor ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I dream of places, they're almost always severely distorted. Some relatives of mine have a fairly large farm house of sorts. When I dream of it, it turns into an enormous mansion. My relatives look nothing like they do in real life. I remember elaborate backstories that aren't true and are quickly forgotten when I wake up (probably because they were vague and not actually all that elaborate but the dream glossed over those details to make it feel real). Often times, the basement in my own home would have an additional tunnel that seems scary or creepy, but even then the basement itself never looks quite like in real life.
    In short, I know this phenomenon first hand...but only kind of. Since none of the places ever look right in the first place, the out-of-place door usually doesn't stand out quite as much.

    A bit of a digression here, but I just wanna say how much I'm coming to loathe the trend of indie horror games self describing their aesthetic as "faux-PS1" despite having little to no resemblance to the PSX's graphical "style"/capabilities other than being "retro". Like, I know the Haunted - PS1 game collections were a hit, but you can just call it "retro-inspired" for if nothing else the sake of authenticity.

    • @-EndlessHorizon
      @-EndlessHorizon ปีที่แล้ว

      Some games do achieve it but only when you see the textures move and vibrate and shake as it was a product of games back then to save memory and it gave the illusion of everything moving it's hard to describe

    • @the_real_Kurt_Yarish
      @the_real_Kurt_Yarish ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@-EndlessHorizon I know the effect you mean, it was an effect exclusive to the PSX and had to do with how the system calculated the position of geometry in 3D graphics. Not every PSX game displayed this effect as there were ways to minimize/remove it, but most games featured it.
      But that's not the only thing many of these "faux-PS1" games get wrong. Things like texture resolution, polygon count, aliasing, anisotropic filtering, lighting, sound design, UI design, etc. So many get these wrong to the point that they might as well be fully modern games with a cheap filter applied over the visuals, rather than an authentic attempt to emulate that specific style of game design. This is something the "Haunted-PS1" collection games tend to get right more often then not, which makes other titles that get it wrong seem worse in comparison. I know some creators either don't have the technical knowledge or skill to recreate that style authentically, or perhaps are even just too young to really be knowledgeable about that specific niche of gaming, but it can have the effect of diluting modern viewers perceptions of what the real thing was actually like. Gradually, specific aspects get diluted into general stereotypes until eventually people start to have a misinformed perception of something that is already fading from public knowledge.

    Really cool concept but i kinda hated the obvious ending, i know cosmic horror doesn't go well with ""good"" endings but I would prefered a "we dont know endingC

    The developer just ruined this game for me with that downscale effect. It’s not even faux PS1, it’s just modern graphics but in low resolution for no reason. It ruins the immersion because pixels is all I’m thinking about, not to mention that it’s very lazy (literally just change one setting in unity). Very disappointing.

    Man, everything was great except the ending. I was disappointed by the ending.

    this game would look so much better without the post-processing pixelation. its so forced, trite, and unnecessary that its kind of annoying. it clearly wasnt a game that was designed with the intention of being pixelated, but since indie horror now is stereotypically pixelated i guess they felt an obligation to be unoriginal.
