I'd like to bring some attention to some comments I've been seeing here. In case anybody hasn't seen it, this video was clearly heavy inspired by another video on TH-cam called The Fallen of World War II by Neil Halloran. That video, when it came out, was one of my biggest inspirations for creating videos in the early days of this channel and I always hoped that Neil would create another video on WW1 and welcome him to still do so, so I strongly recommend you going and watching that video next after this one; th-cam.com/video/DwKPFT-RioU/w-d-xo.html As for a second point, this video does have a sponsor segment inside of it. Skillshare has been a very longtime supporter of this channel and I discussed the sensitivity of this video with them, and we felt like we did it in a respectful and tasteful manner by waiting until the very end of the video to bring it up. I have a policy of never bringing up sponsors in the middle of videos and only placing them at the ends of every video, leaving you as the viewer the opportunity to close out of the video without missing anything important if you don't like it. I understand that this is a sensitive subject, so if you feel like it wasn't as respectful as you had hoped I deeply apologize for that. This video is not monetized with regular ads by my own choosing, and it never will be. You'll never watch an ad before the start of this video for as long as it's up. If you have any more concerns related to either of these points, feel free to reply to this comment and I'll do my best to respond to you personally. And most of all, remember the individual stories of the people who died more than the statistics. I hope we never forget that.
RealLifeLore I thought you did a great job. You didn’t make a video that played on the heart strings, just a video capturing the wow factor of the enormous numbers to put into perspective for everyone. So it was done well!
RealLifeLore Great video! I just have a question, for Germany and Britain’s soldiers killed or injured are you including their colonies too or just the European population? What an incredible loss of life WWI had, I’m glad you made this video
My great great uncle was killed 3 weeks before it ended Joseph Ladouceur, Quebec regiment, Killed October 22 1918 next to his brother by German artillery
Gavin Marion man sorry to hear. My great grandfather was also in the canadian army during ww1 and was wounded around ypres 1917. He only fought in the war for 5 months
Gavin Marion Ah, my condolences. My German Great Great Grandfather was at the Somme. I got to read a letter that was apparently from him, and he said that he had many close encounters with death, and was begging God to either kill him or let him go home. He also documented that there was a younger man than him (he was 19 at the time) and that an artillery shell ripped him open at the waist. Truly saddening. The cool thing is, my Dad still has a pistol that he took from a dead French Soldier that he used in combat (I know the dead man was French bc that’s where the gun was manufactured) and even crazier is that he was supposed to go to Verdun, but he fell ill, and wasn’t able to go. The Germans later lost Fort de Vaux. I like to think that was divine intervention
I had several uncles/reletives from Ireland who were railway builders and mine diggers during WWI. I think only one survived, so I completely understand.
there were 2 wars before WW2 but not really well known- the first and second Balkan war. First was pretty much everyone on the Balkans vs the Ottoman Empire and the second was everyone on the Balkans against Bulgaria. Of course it is nowhere near the World Wars but still pretty bad years for the countires that participated in it
In my opinion, we often overlook the 7 years war. It is the world wide war (yes ww1 isn't really the first), with very heavy implication around the world as colonial empire where forming (Americas, India, Pacific islands, etc.).

Serbia - The WW1 equivalent of Poland during WW2 Yet most people forget about either of our two nations when they speak about both World Wars... It's kind of sad really.
@Stallion Duck There are a lot of reasons as to why Serbia didn't completely recover and Poland did. You can't simply say "NATO fucked us over" or "Croatia fucked us over". None of the 1990s wars were one-sided deals where someone tried to put Serbia down, both sides fucked shit up. As for Kosovo and Polish support, you've got to remember Polish government and Poles are two separate things. Polish government for example is extremely against Russian annexation of Crimea and would gladly support Ukraine in its civil war, while at the same time the people here are a mixed bag of those that support Ukraine, those that hate Ukraine and those that don't give a fuck about Ukraine. Same goes for Kosovo and its independence. I myself have no opinion on it as of now. I haven't delved into the issue enough to form one. Poland on the other hand, at least to me, seemed like one of the more liked Communist nations and it didn't change much till this day, at least until current government came into power.
@@smiglo112 I do agree with you, but the fact of the matter is the US bombed us because we wouldn't let Kosovo go, a region that was a part of Serbia throughout history. Now, it's filled with Albanians whereas before the fall of Serbia under the Ottomans it was 90% Serbian. But I do agree with you that everyone "fucked shit up" during the Yugoslav war.
Douveineel The bombing wasn’t because Serbia wouldn’t release Kosovo or something, it was because it was ethnically cleansing in Kosovo. Also, in the Ottomans’ time ethnic cleansing was both easier to cover up and harder for outside countries to be able to spare resources (to prevent the cleansings). Many things the Ottomans (and all other major historical empires) did were wrong, but committing another wrong won’t make it right.
Can you imagine? 22% of serbian casualties... 15% of french casualties... it means in every home some one is missing. Besisdes it touched for most the Young male between 18 and 40. @ItzMartin You just dont understand difference between cause and trigger. Every war has that. Do you really think that WW1 could be avoided? Just look at first and second Maroccan crisis. Whole world was moving from one crisis to the another and everybody ware preparing for war (in the past 10 years all big nations ware preparing their armies for war, reorganization, arming and other stuff), this was just a moment when countries decided to go to war. There would be less dead people in the world if the central powers won. Because the Nazis would never have existed and the Russian civil war could have been won by the whites.
Germany had universal manhood suffrage, while in Britain 40% of men still were not able to vote. Germany also justified the war themselves as a means of defending values against a repressive, militaristic and backwater state: Tsarist Russia. Full respect for the soldiers who fought, it wasn't their fault, however the belief that the world war one was fought to defend democracy is plain propaganda.

Serbia started the war moron, they killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Then Austria declared war. 100 years later people are still uneducated, go and read the whole history not only what they give you in school
@@Albanian.C.n.R Austria-Hungary started the war by declaring war on Serbia. Assassination of one man isn't a cause of the entire global conflict. AH was planning to conqer Serbia anyways this just gave them a legitimate reason to declare war.
LIR SUN archduke love his people especially Serbians and yet they Assassinated him. And the central power was a defensive pact (that’s why Italy didn’t joined) Germany join AH because they thought that Serbia was the cause of this war. If AH declares war on Serbia without the archduke being assassinated than Germany wouldn’t join. So Serbia actually started the world war instead of a local war
Pretty sure the assassin was either working in the interests of Serbia, or part of an anti-AH organization that Serbia was refusing to dismantle. If that is the case, then yes, Serbia started the war and AH was justified to invade and dismantle any organizations that were targeting their gov. But it really never should’ve been anything more than a regional conflict. Unfortunately the rest of Europe’s major powers (besides Britain) were kind of eager to go to war for various reasons. - Russia wanted to greatly reduce AH power and gain influence in Balkans - Germany believed that a major war was inevitable and that the longer they waited, the bigger the advantage Russia would have - France wanted Alsace-Lorraine back So Russia decided to use the pact with Serbia and began to mobilize, then Germany using above logic decided now was better than a few years later and wanted the initiative so declared war. But the real issue lies in their predictions of the war. Major power wars were not viewed the same back then as they are today. They weren’t seen as something to be avoided unless absolutely necessary, but rather an extremely expensive but also effective diplomatic tool. So all of the European powers saw that tension was building and a war might be coming, but none took any (big) steps to try and avoid it. None of them saw a 4 year bloodbath stalemate where one side eventually declares victory but there is no real winner as what was coming. They knew it would be a big war, but something like that had never been seen before.
The interesting thing with comparing the first and second wold wars is the fact that during the first world war, most of the fighting (in the west at least) was constrained to a relatively small geographic area, while during the second world war the geographic scope was much larger, affecting many more people.

In a meeting they argued and when the Tsar called off the military an adviser came up saying he knows how difficult it must be to make a decision. The Tsar took this as an insult since he was aware of the rumors going on about him being a weak leader. To show strength he gave in and order the military to the borders. When war was official being thrown left and right the Kaiser felt betrayed quoting on how his cousins had it out for him.

In one "episode" he pretended to have mail he was reading. When answering a question he said, "I won't cover that for two years." So he either makes things up, or is rude to his audience. I would rank him with Lindybeige. Interesting at times, but trying too hard and thinking too much of himself. Military History Visualized is better.

World War I was the most influential war in modern history. Traditionally, more focus is put on World War II, but that was a direct result of World War I. Aside from that though, other things resulted for individual regions of the world. For the United States, it was their first taste of being a world power. For Russia, it was the birth of the Soviet Union. For Japan, it gave them a taste of being a world power, and would foster in them ultranationalism For China, it humiliated them, and would lead to the birth of the CCP For the Middle East, the region was carved up, and led to many conflicts that we have today, including the War on Terror. This year, in the USAD Speech contest, my topic will be the last one.
don't forget that for Germany it lead to the peace of Versailles, that sent the country into literal famine, and that gave tise to the nazi party, Italy on the other hand, despite fighting and dying on the alps, and being one of the true victors of the war, was treated with contempt in Paris while the UK and France carved up the Ottoman Empire, and that lead to the rise of Fascim for the "Vittoria Mutilata"
Kings slayer not really... in Russia maybe, but UK, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Spain are all monarchies today, Japan still has the emperor, and Italy became a republic only after WW2

And then you hear american going at "french surrender", they always join the war when it's almost over, they don't understand what it is to lose a whole generation of young men, but hey, france didn't help them in Irak because it was a huge mess so French bashing is a thing ...
That’s only jackasses that do that. Napoleon kicked ass, France kicked ass in ww1 and not all of them gave up in ww2. As far as I am aware our world history curriculum (at least in Louisiana) teaches that everyone had a part to play and doesn’t tell us oh the French always surrender. And we kinda do understand losing a generation of young men. We had the civil war which killed lots of people. Certainly not as many as World War One but still a lot. Plus if the European military observers had paid more attention to it they might have figured out that charging into machine gun fire is an awful idea and possibly could have adjusted their tactics before the war started.
Mr. Krakz the french surrender stereotype were made by nationalist americans. I’ve never heard a brit or another european call the french surrender pussies.

I'd like to bring some attention to some comments I've been seeing here. In case anybody hasn't seen it, this video was clearly heavy inspired by another video on TH-cam called The Fallen of World War II by Neil Halloran. That video, when it came out, was one of my biggest inspirations for creating videos in the early days of this channel and I always hoped that Neil would create another video on WW1 and welcome him to still do so, so I strongly recommend you going and watching that video next after this one; th-cam.com/video/DwKPFT-RioU/w-d-xo.html
As for a second point, this video does have a sponsor segment inside of it.
RealLifeLore Hi! I was just wondering, but I thought that over one million Indians were sent into WW1? It’s pretty interesting that very few died.

Gavin Marion man sorry to hear. My great grandfather was also in the canadian army during ww1 and was wounded around ypres 1917. He only fought in the war for 5 months
apparently mine was shot down over the western front

In my opinion, we often overlook the 7 years war. It is the world wide war (yes ww1 isn't really the first), with very heavy implication around the world as colonial empire where forming (Americas, India, Pacific islands, etc.).
And don't forget the Spanish influenza, likely made possible by the Great War. It killed, one hundred million people.

Yet most people forget about either of our two nations when they speak about both World Wars...

If you just look at phone calls between AU and Germany you will see that AU asked for support if Russia goes in and Germany said yes. They all knew what will happen if AU declare war (British, France, Russia, France even told german minister that France will not back down if Russia goes to war). I hate Princip because i think that war could start somewhere else and that we did not have to lose 22% of our people, but saying that he is to blame for the war is just childish.

There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Rip Serbia from an Orthodox brother.
@@Albanian.C.n.R dude you said "go read book" but you dont even know the truth xd.... The war was planed to start 30 years ago... :)
LIR SUN archduke love his people especially Serbians and yet they
Assassinated him.
- Russia wanted to greatly reduce AH power and gain influence in Balkans
- Germany believed that a major war was inevitable and that the longer they waited, the bigger the advantage Russia would have
- France wanted Alsace-Lorraine back
So Russia decided to use the pact with Serbia and began to mobilize, then Germany using above logic decided now was better than a few years later and wanted the initiative so declared war.
102 year’s ago may all who have passed away rest in piece
lol
The interesting thing with comparing the first and second wold wars is the fact that during the first world war, most of the fighting (in the west at least) was constrained to a relatively small geographic area, while during the second world war the geographic scope was much larger, affecting many more people.
All wars are civil wars
Because all men are brothers.
And shall we never assign victors, or losers, when in reality everyone lost in this pointless war.

For the United States, it was their first taste of being a world power.
For Russia, it was the birth of the Soviet Union.
For Japan, it gave them a taste of being a world power, and would foster in them ultranationalism
For China, it humiliated them, and would lead to the birth of the CCP
For the Middle East, the region was carved up, and led to many conflicts that we have today, including the War on Terror.

Americans arent the only people on earth
Yes without the French many of the words we speak today would not exist. If any at all: they would be completely different!
French doesn't always surrender lol
It's a stupid joke that originates from the german-french hate relationship after napoleon...
Mr. Krakz the french surrender stereotype were made by nationalist americans. I’ve never heard a brit or another european call the french surrender pussies.
My great grandad fought in the second war and he died last year at 94 years old
He told me a story of him walking over bodies at d-day
