Saw 40 years ago, when this album came out in SF at Warfield Theater. Also saw them in Sacramento in 2022 again. Absolutely 💯 🔥 bothe times. His voice still incredible!!!
Timi Hansen on bass RIP. Kim Ruzz on drums. Left the music business after the first two Mercyful Fate albums. Michael Denner and Hank Shermann on guitars. They have released other albums together. Force Of Evil, Zoser Mez and Denner/Shermann. Today they doesn't talk after Denner wasn't invited to tour with Mercyful Fate. They of course started out together in Brats. An old Danish punk band that turned into the first Danish metal band. Shermann was an original member of the punk version. After their 1980 Album they hired King Diamond as vocalist. After the record company thought they were too heavy the band broke up and Mercyful Fate was formed
METAL CHURCH - " Metal Church " 1984 Heavy Metal Classic. w/ Drum Intro that is Heavy Rockin' Right from the Beginning and Guitars are Insanely Fast and super Awesome.
The Shermann/Denner guitar duo was one of the top duos of the '80s (and there were a TON of dual lead guitar bands in the, frickin', '80s!!) 🤘🤘🔥! I LOATHED the lyrical content, but: the music was SO incredible (and so incredibly UNDERGROUND!!), that it was, simply, indelible! [Let's just say that: fewer people knew who Mercyful [sic] Fate were, in 1983, than knew who MetallicA were (and permit me to assure you!!!: In 1983??? If you were a MetallicA fan??? ...everybody KNEW that you WERE and, simultaneously, NO-ONE knew who THEY were!). The name of Mercyful Fate was, effectively, a shibboleth for: the deep, metal underground and the dark corners of "cool," which were UTTERLY invisible from the middle of the road! 🤘🤘 Melissa and Don't Break The Oath were FRIGHTENING when they came out! 🤘🤘
I have been listening to these guys since Nuns have no fun. After a hard day's work I can grab a couple beers and relax in the backyard listening to Melissa or Don't break the Oath. So relaxing. It's my smooth jazz 🎺
5:58 - that riff and guitar duo reminds me of Iron Maiden but the vocals? Rob Halford style. :P Not my type of vocal but musically these guys are crazy good.
Oh and I wouldn't call it another form of entertainment. Some of these guys, like Ghost, Slayer bands, King Diamond and Glenn Danzig are heavily into satanic energies and spirits. Don't mess with these and you'll be fine.
Metallica are good friends with Mercyful Fate. They got to know each other because while Mercyful Fate was recording this album Metallica was also in the same studio recording their debut album. They would pop in on each other to see how they were doing. Also Mercyful Fate and Metallica's drummer, Lars Ulrich, are both Danish.
One thing you can always count on in a Mercyful Fate song is there will be change ups in the beat and feel to the song throughout. King's vocals are jarring when you first hear them, but after you listen a couple times you get how good they are. I was a bigger fan of the Don't Break the Oath album, but those 1st albums were great.
The album “ Eye of The Witch “ is a great spooky story from beginning till the end and I love it !!!! Its by King Diamond 1990 ,Mercyful Fate was 80s !!!!
The singer is Rob Halford's son? 😄 His voice is very similar to the famous singer Judas Priest, and overall I got the impression that I was listening to Judas Priest.
You guys are great! Interesting: At the time of this comment, you were at 50.2k subs. 😆 I took the liberty of taking a screenshot of the numbers. That's pretty cool: 50.2k subs. And Louisville's area code: 502 Right?! Cool. 🤘 I lived in Louisville for 5 years of my life between 01 and 07. I miss it so much.
The Swedish group Ghost is riding high on basically same idea except that the band members are left nameless. Have to say that the song suffers somewhat of the dated overall sound, reverb all over the place.
...First band I ever saw use "corpse paint" (well: King Diamond. Everyone else remained "make-up-less."). ...I'm not saying "they started it,**" but ...I would bet that a lot of people who, later, used it or favored it ...encountered it via Mercyful Fate first. 🤘🤘 **That would, actually, probably, be: Arthur Brown [from: Crazy World Of Arthur Brown] and Alice Cooper (slightly later). 🤷🤷 [Best I can remember] (if we're gonna talk "history of corpse paint" - which, actually: we weren't GOING to! 🤷 🤪😋)
@@AgentBeans Gene would sue a bear's family for having fur, if he owned a coat made of one of their parents. Those guys were LOOKING for potential lawsuits. 🤦🤷
@@SonicProfessor_a.k.a._T._Andra I know thats right man!!! It was just cool to see Alice back up KIng man! This was years ago of course but I always remembered it.
@@AgentBeans Definitely! Vince/Alice has ALWAYS been a cool-ass bastard! ...from what I know of King, he has always been the same with his fans (and just people in general!). ...Definitely cool to witness/remember, though! I agree!
You opened up a whole new can of worms on this one! You want fast, relentless metal? Overkill 'Elimination' should be on your list...Bobby Gustafson is a relentless shred machine. When he left the band, they had to replace him with 2 guitarists. Mercyful Fate tracks that deserve a listen? Curse Of The Pharaohs, Melissa, Dangerous Meeting, Omens, Gypsy, Into The Coven - and of course the later Abigail album from King! Too many to list!
Actually enjoyed this more than I expected, though parts did seem a little disjointed to me--like they were lobbing every grenade in their arsenal into this one song. Will be interesting to hear another song by them. And, yes, quite an unusual vocal range.
Finally some metal and what a song choice! Big props for picking Mercyful Fate! Fire, just fire! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I loved this album and the follow up, Don't Break The Oath.
Melissa is one of the best debut albums ever. Denner/ Shermann guitar duo a close second behind Downing/Tipton of Judas Priest.
They alway mixed it up realy well. Never boring. Always surprises around every corner.
King's voice is an instrument :)
Try "A Dangerous Meeting" from their second album. My vote for their best song.
that song shreds. the Old Oak has some fantastic solos. \m/
The bell 🛎 in the middle of the song adds to the tempo

One of the greatest Metal albums ever recorded. Love Mercyful Fate. You guys should do the titile track Melissa.
Michael Denner and Hank Sherman are equally awesome .
I met him at a bar in the mid 90's. He was sans makeup, just super chill and playing pool. A very laid back, cool dude.
Definitely. 👍👍 The NICEST guy!

Metal Church's 3 best songs overall are on Side 1of their debut.
Merciless Onslaught!
King Diamond will be in Louisville Oct 23rd, i will definitely be there, i would suggest you see this show, King is amazing and the show is fantastic.

The entire Abigail album from King might be a good Halloween special. It's a ghost story. 🍻

Metallica does an 8 min cover of king diamond songs. Must hear,
MF medley.. I've always loved MF riffage and music.. but it took many years for me to get into King Diamond's vox style.
I got to see King Diamond, Metallica and Ozzy @ Ozzfest 2008 in Dallas. Metallica played with King Diamond for the encore as well. It was phenomenal.
Metallica sucks! Boring posers!
King Diamond is pretty calm lol
Nowadays compared to the newer bands. People were scared of this music back then.
Venom, first 3 albums, Bathory first 3 albums, Celtic Frost forst 2 albums. thats all for now......
Ahhhhhh memories ❤
This year for Halloween marathon
Alice Cooper- Billion Dollar Babies ( 73)
I suggest: - Mercyful Fate - Don´t Break the Oath and Tremonti - Throw Them To The Lions
Classic stuff, Cannot go wrong with Mercyful Fate or King Diamond.

React to Don't break the Oath!!!
Definetly dive into some of king diamonds other band king diamond….more melodic and even more theatrical with the vocals
🤟🤟🤟🎸🎸🎸🎸😜😜😜
they sound like metallica because metallica took lots of inspiration from them lol

Soon to be covered by the morman tabernacle choir 😂 ..... Ok for a one time listen but not play list for me. Keep on being you.
Straight garbage. I love metal but I bought this on cassette in 1983 and had to take it back to the store. First and only time that happened.
