As a fellow nursing student, I'd like to add to her description of "being with the patient through everything." It's so much more than baths and IV's! In nursing, especially in an ICU setting, you are the eyes on the patient. You are the one who catches complications early, who identifies emergency situations and calls codes (ie a rapid response if the patient is deteriorating in some way, usually hemodynamic instability or oxygen desaturation, or code blue if the patients heart stops), you are the one who proposes labs that may need to be drawn, new meds or changes to meds that may be beneficial, or therapies you think the patient would benefit from. You are looking at trending labs and vitals and drawing conclusions about what may be happening inside your patient, sometimes before the doctor does. You are also the last set of eyes on all orders for procedures, therapies, etc and you are the one to stand up for your patient if you think something may harm them rather than help. Finally, nurses get to learn to use lots of complex equipment, again particularly in the ICU. You may be working with arterial lines, ICP monitoring systems, hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, ventilators, swan-ganz, impellas, cardiac rhythm monitors, chest tubes, and so much more that I haven't even been exposed to yet. Nurses have a huge role to play that I am still learning the extent of.
