    Figured I'd come back to this video 3 years later and say something about this lens.
    I had this lens and my camera in my backpack and was involved in a motorcycle accident. The lens took most of the damage and still rocks on with only a slight slow down to the auto focus.
    Amazing lens!!

      That bokeh with 1.4 tho :o

    • @kevindiaz3459
      @kevindiaz3459 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      LOL, I can see your point there. I actually stopped recommending the 1.4 since the 1.8 is cheaper and does so well. Both are better off stopping down to avoid soft focus and aberrations anyway, so you end up shooting with about the same settings. For that, might as well get the cheaper one.

    • @O.G.H.
      @O.G.H. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@vikorbracho It isn't really worth the additional 200+ dollars imo. The bokeh os really not that much better

      Keep in mind that this Version is a STM (a must for a 6d Mark II) that allow you to shot video with the AF method: Live 1-point AF and then choose "Movie Servo AF speed." "AF speed" from 0 to -4. In this way you can focus a video like a cinematic pro camera!!! S l o w l y. (other compatiblle Lenses are the EF 24-105mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM) Good video :-)

    I would not call the 50mm 1.8 underrated in any way. Look at ANY article or video on budget Canon lenses and you will see this lens. It's recommended everywhere and hailed as the holy grail of cheap lenses. I don't disagree that it should be in most people's camera kits, but I can't say I agree with it being underrated.

    • @khell1169
      @khell1169 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      underrated means it doesn't get the credit it deserves, which is what you're describing. Think you might be misunderstanding what that term means. It's a good thing!

    Late breaking 2020 question for Peter or any experts! I've been filming with the Sony 16-55 f2.8/G lens set at 24mm. If you check out the video that results, would I be better off getting a prime 24mm? The 2.8 lets a lot of light in but I do film in darker conditions since it's lit by ambient colored RGB LEDs. I'm wondering if I got a 1.4 or 1.8 prime if it'd be better. I get some "sweet bokeh" now, but more is better!
    I don't want to link the video here, that'd be egregious, but if you go to my channel it's the "Shop Talk 01" episode. While you're there, though, check out my "How to make coffee in a power outage" video which is my pride and joy :-)
    From one Canadian to another, thanks for all the great free content!

    The 50 was my first budget lens I ever bought back in 2012. Even with my go-to 18-35, 24, 70-200, etc. I still use that 50 to this day.

    • @gabemichael_ai
      @gabemichael_ai 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DadVerb this was my first Lens as well.

    • @armaniskandar3967
      @armaniskandar3967 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      is there a huge difference when you use an 18 - 85 versus just a 50? i mean like, 18-85 can still do a 50.

    • @dadverb
      @dadverb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd say the biggest differentiator is that the 50 can get down to f/1.8 for excellent depth shots. I think the Canon 15-85 can only go to f/3.5 which is limiting when it comes to creating depth or getting great bokeh. I don't normally use a 15-85 for my videos, but with some zoom lenses, you may get some cropping on occasion depending on the sensor. Also, primes traditionally have slightly better quality, though zooms have gotten much better lately.

    • @armaniskandar3967
      @armaniskandar3967 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DadVerb oh sweet. im thinking of getting one. do you think i should just buy a 14mm since i already have 18 - 85? saves money dont you think? or i should buy 50mm nevertheless

    • @dadverb
      @dadverb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. Hard to say since I'm not too sure what kind of stuff you enjoy shooting. Personally, I'd get a 50 just to have on hand but a 14 is great for wider shots. Maybe landscapes or vlogging.

    Something I learned a VERY long time ago is that "Inexpensive" no longer means "Cheap". The production costs for just about everything you can think of have gotten so ridiculously low, while technology just keeps marching forward, that even something like a decent-to-high quality camera lens can be manufactured and sold for a fraction of the cost/price ratio that would have been required even a decade ago.
    As a semi-pro-hope-to-be-fulltime-photographer-someday, I'm getting shots today with a $600 digital + $300 - $500 lens that far surpass the best shots I ever got with my first "real" film camera back in the late 80s that cost over $2000 for camera + lens. Could I do even better if I were to drop four or five grand more on gear? Sure. But do I have to right now? Not at all.

  • @RamLimko
    @RamLimko 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Some small correction: The focal length that you actually gonna get is always 50 mm, no matter what camera you use. But on APS-C sensor the frame size is gonna look like 80mm lens on full frame, and you are not gonna get the same results with APS-C + 50mm and full frame + 80mm (same aperture) in terms of depth of field. Because you still have the 50mm focal length, but the image is cropped... ;)
    However, nice video for beginners like me :D

    I’m shooting on an 80D. I’ve always struggled to find a use for my 50mm for photography - often I’d find the 80mm equivalent FOV too tight. But now that I’m starting to shoot video a bit, I’m finding that same 80mm FOV so yummy. Built-in IS would be awesome but of course that would increase the price. So I’ll just try to lay off the coffee a bit

    Amazing, Peter, your explanation of crop sensor magnification made a lot of sense. Thank you! I have this lense but it's the pre-STM engine - sounds like a transformer looking around whenever I focus Haha!

    Hey guys! If you're REEEALLLY on a budget, there's also the Yongnuo 50 mm lens. Same F 1.8 capability, same focal length, it's basically meant to be a dupe of the canon lens. And this baby is only $50. I got mine on amazon. So if you reeeally are on a tight budget, this lens works amazing. I've been using it for years and I love it. I do think it is made out of plastic though, which can be a downside if you really do tend to throw your lenses around. But other than that, it is supposed to perform identically. Not trying to knock the canon lens, just thought I'd share! 😊

    I had this lens back when I was a Canon man and I was out in a overgrown field one day, I stopped to switch lenses and it rolled out of my camera bag, I was new to photography and I loved this lens looked for like an hour and I couldn’t find it. Six months past through winter and I see a post on a local facebook page saying I’ve found a lens almost the exact spot I lost it. Went and picked it up and banged it on my camera and it was in perfect working order and other than some mud on the outside it was perfectly clean inside! Still blows my mind lol

    As a newbie to this game and being on a budget, after seeing multiple views I decided to purchase one. It arrived yesterday and I am quite impressed with the build and the results. A little noisy when focusing but for this price lens noise is my least worry. Now I have change to spend on other funky stuff.

      @tomdonaghy8757 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Totally agree. my 50/1.8 is a go-to workhorse. Put your camera on a tripod (the sharpest lens you will ever have is called a tripod) and wow. I use it mostly at F4. But is is quite versatile. Most of my portraits come off this lens.

    • @mineclashtv9709
      @mineclashtv9709 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@tomdonaghy8757 Yeah, don't get me wrong - the 50mm f1.8 is an amazing lens. It's just the video title that annoyed me a little, expected something different than a fifty like every other photographer in this universe already recommends. It is most definitely not "underrated". Perhaps 35mm is underrated? 85mm?

    I trade it in for 24 to 70 2.8 now i would say i do miss it.

    • @joostvisser6508
      @joostvisser6508 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Aerylithe I have one as well, and here is a short review. TL;DR at the bottom.
      It's certainly worth it. $125 is very cheap for a lens and certainly for an F/1.8 lens. Bokeh is pretty soft which I like. There is some chromatic aberration, but very little, especially for the price. It's also great if you want to dabble in astrophotography. You can easily gather enough light to photograph the milky way or Orion constellation, without buying a star tracker (if you use proper technique of course).
      There are a few things tho to think about if you consider this lens: The manual focus is motor controlled, which is somewhat annoying because it's not uncommon for the motor to just not respond to me rotating the focus wheel. I need to change to AF and back to MF for the motor to respond again. Not sure how common this bug is though, so your mileage may vary. Also, the look through the viewfinder is not entirely representative of the actual picture you get, at least with my camera. The focus point is at the same distance but objects that are out of focus are more out of focus in the actual image vs the viewfinder. The bokeh is also a lot harsher in the viewfinder. Nothing deal-breaking, just something worth pointing out.
      Another thing to think about is that you really need to confirm that the lens is actually autofocussing on the subject of interest at F/1.8. I was taking some portraits of my mother the other day and it was only in the postprocessing that I noticed that the camera autofocussed on her scarf instead of her face. You'd think "Whatever, those are basically the same distance anyways", especially since she was standing a good 10 feet away from the camera, but it did matter because her face was slightly out of focus, and people with very untrained eyes noticed that immediately. But this is an inherent thing with any F/1.8 lens, so nothing specific to this one, and you can always close the aperture a little.
      I know so far this post has talked mostly about the quirks it has, but honestly, this lens performs so well that those things are really nothing to lose sleep over. It's absolutely awesome and even if you want to use it for the sole purpose of learning how to shoot at F/1.8 for when you get a better lens down the line, this guy is 100% worth it.
      TL;DR It has a few small quirks but it's also so much value for the money that if you can afford it, don't even hesitate on getting it.

      @rickydegove i'm covered on the 24 already with my zoom lens. but that's all I have. I was thinking of going for the 50mm on my crop sensor for portraits and stuff, the nice bokeh blur looks very nice. I know I'll have to stand a good distance away for the photo, but still thinking I'll go for it. Worst case scenario, I'll use my zoom lens if there isn't space for me to back away from the subject
