  • 50mm is a popular street photography lens for any street photography camera - the 50mm 1.8 is probably the most frequently bought prime lens, there's a nifty fifty for every lens mount. They're affordable and pack a punch with detail, shallow depth of field and versatility.

      Was it a 1.8 ?

      @UniiYpc my Pentax LX came with a 1.4. Most pentax SLRs came with an f2, but an f1.7 or 1.4 were pretty common too.. 1.2s were also out there

    I love how tricky but rewarding the 50mm is in street photography. It's almost like you have to simultaneously 'portrait' both the background and foreground. It definitely makes you think hard about composition.

    Wow wow wow I want to thank you so much for the car park tip! Tried it today and I don’t know why I didn’t think of going up them before. Not only is it good for getting pics that are out of the ordinary, it’s just bloody fun to see the world from up there. I want to go up every car park in Bristol now!

    For decades, one of my favorite cameras for street photography was a Nikon EM with the pancake 50/1.8. I would pick an f-stop suitable for the lighting, hyperfocus the lens at infinity and then tape it so that the focus did not shift. My film was Kodak Tri-X, sometimes pushed to ASA 800 or 1000. Rollei 35s were also great choices.

    I do love car parks, as long as you don’t get a jobs worth on security like you sometimes do at Shudehill, but it is great for city views. The one at First Street on the other hand seems to welcome photographers, on the roof where there’s that little under cover area, there looked like it was set up for a shoot when we were there, get some great long exposure train or road shots at night too. Tib Street seems like there’s no one even working there, though of course there is 🤣
    Great video, I went from an entry level Canon DSLR to the Fuji XT3 nearly 2 years ago, I’d been looking to upgrade at some point but was forced into it after my backpack with 3 lenses in slid down an embankment into a stream, followed by myself with my 1300D DSLR and my Canon G7 X ( still gutted about that one ). Thankfully I’d taken out new insurance a few months prior and because we managed to retrieve everything and sent it off to them for testing they paid out within a few weeks, I don’t think they bothered to test them either. I had been looking at the 90d since it was a rumour but suddenly stopped, no idea why but I wish I hadn’t. Don’t get me wrong, the Xt3 is a great camera and I’ve got some cracking images with it but I’ve never been completely comfortable with it, in a perfect world I’d go for the R6 or even the Sony A7iii, even just moving up to the XT4 for the ibis but as I’ve got a few dents in mine, which only happened a few days ago, I’m not going to get much for Trade In. Oh well, maybe next year, I need a new phone now which is more important as I have a number of health issues and we’ve just got rid of our house phone, didn’t see the point in paying for something that we rarely used.

      Thanks for the tips Brian! Shudehill is always an easy shout for me but I'll check out the others for sure. Sorry to hear about gear drama but hopefully the XT3 can keep you going for a while, my girlfriend uses the XT4 for her professional work and it's possibly the most capable crop sensor camera I've seen, especially if you like some video in the mix too. Cheers!

    Probably a stupid question, but I am a complete beginner and I have the 50mm 1.8f and I am not sure how to do this type of street photography - walking around, taking quick shots of people etc..
    Am I supposed to use the "infinity" focus? Also, how should I set it up so that I don't have to battle with the light before every single picture? (I usually adjust it quickly by just changing the shutter speed)

    • @GeorgeHolden
      @GeorgeHolden  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi, not a stupid question at all - presuming you have an autofocus lens and camera set up? In terms of focus it's a trial and error of using different focus areas, for example I use spot focus or wide focus area. For controlling light, it's worth assessing the area you're in and checking exposure, then keep your F stop, shutter speed and ISO where you like them and just shoot with those settings until the lighting changes.
      There's no one-stop settings or method, but it's more about trial and error for how you like to shoot

    Does canon ef 50mm 1.8 makes noise when taking photo with auto focus on?

    • @GeorgeHolden
      @GeorgeHolden  ปีที่แล้ว

      This isn't a canon, but yes the canon 1.8 does, less so with the 2nd generation

  • @olegkatchinski5867

    Methods are pretty good but I found it hard to connect with a 50mm lens in particular. And the examples (although they were solid) did not justify this particular lens (at least for me). The same ideas could work equally nice with anything between 24 and 100mm. In case if you wonder, I have been using 50mm both f1.8 and f1.4 for the last 17 years.

    I didn’t realize I need a 33mm f1.4 lens for street photography until I brought my 56mm f1.2 to farmers market yesterday. 50mm/56mm is really not a good lens for street photography. Well, maybe I am just making an excuse on wasting money for a 33mm f1.4 lens😂.
