    I'll be watching this multiple times as CWB is still one of the biggest misteries of the game to me. My personal theory is that it's one of the roles whose behaviour is most influenced by the player's own traits and attributes. It's kind of the "complete forward" of wing-backs if that makes sense.

    In my first season of my Barca save i used both Balde and Cancelo as CWB's on the left. I used Balde on support and cancelo on attack and it was super interesting to see the driving dribbles Cancelo would make to the inside, a lot of the time he was basically an IW on attack. Just something i found cool and thought i would mention. While i'm sure a lot of that was to do with the duty, using a right footed CWB on the left or vice versa can be effective too.

    Finding a CWB with a truly exceptional all-around skill set is the biggest challenge. It's important to remember that this role isn't independent role. To make it work effectively, you often need to adjust the positions and roles of 3 or 4 players around the CWB to achieve the desired tactical outcome. But no other player can control opposition D Box wide area like CWB from defensive line.

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very true indeed. It falls on the end of the spectrum where the Roaming Playmaker is; meaning you can't just toss it out there without special tactical considerations. But if you have the right player and a good system, they can thrive

    Always fan of a new video from this channel!
    Although this is the first time I find myself not agreeing with somethings you say.
    Don’t really think in right or wrong or good or bad. But Hernandez is THE dream IWB on AT. Completely agree with him being a bad choice for CWB as I rate Flair a lot for a position that is allowed to do a bit more. But a bit of an odd choice imo when it comes to CWB WB comparisons.
    The winger, F9 mirror with a CWB behind on one side tactic broke my brain a bit 😅. And I didn’t quit follow your explanation.
    I don’t see how you don’t want at least one winger cutting inside. I see how a MEZ fits well with a W and WB. But the runs a CWB (A) with MEZ(S/A) and IF (S/A) combo can bring, especially with a F9, just seem a lot more logical imo.
    But anyways loved the insight again and all love ❤

      Thanks for the comment and the contrasting points of view!!
      With the Theo comparison, it was more of a "he's a popular wing back, here's some things to look out for" plus I think I had watched a video on AC Milan recently so they were on my brain 😂😂
      For the tactic, that's probably more to do with my preferences on roles at the moment lol. Been really enjoying the winger recently and liked some of the movement. Also, if you'll allow me to defend the tactic a little further, in the highlight breakdown I showed, the winger actually does make a delayed cut inside to be (mostly) unmarked in on goal 😆 but your point still stands, and I appreciate the thoughtful contrasting point of view!

    Probably one of my favorite ever roles, the Complete Wing Back -usually on Attack - or simply, the Daniel Alves role. Usually pair him with an IF/IW on sup and a CAR to cover a bit defensively on the side. The only negative thing about the role is that not many people can actually play it since it is very demanding. Some of the best CWB in game would be, Gaya, Hakimi, Yan Couto and Jordi Alba (at least when he was younger).

    i agree with your high floor-low ceiling philosophy.
    as we don't know how the game make his calculation, we can only guess.
    let's say that a shoot need just finishing and composure. a player with 10(50% of positive chance) and 10(50% of positive chance) will have 0.5x0.5= 25% of positive chance
    if a player has 8 and 12 (same amount of total points as above) will have 40% of postive chance in an attribute and 60% in another = 0.4x0.6= 24%
    this proves that a well rounded player should be better

    Very interesting. Haven't tried it much yet. Any time I've tried it, the player (or players, when using 2 CWBs) tend to cause a pretty big defensive weakness, and I get spooked and change it back to something more orthodox. But admittedly I haven't yet tried it for a sustained amount of time, because I've recently been playing Journeyman and taking over yo-yo clubs deep in the relegation zone that need defensive solidity first. And I noticed that some of the players that I thought were good fits, actually don't match this "high floor/low ceiling". Like they'll be borderline Premier League/Championship wing-backs with 'only' 11 in some CWB attributes.
    Generally speaking I find WBs pretty risky in this game, unless you're really dominant. I actually quite like to use FBs on support, and trust in the BPDs, DLP, CM(A) etc. to get the ball forward, spray to wingers, etc. Playing like this with a positive 4-3-3, I had the lowest goals conceded and the most clean sheets in the Championship with Fulham, but also the worst number of goals in the entire top half of the league, although there was also a pretty big xG underperformance there. We hit a bad slump of form just when we were in pole position for automatic promotion, but thankfully won the playoff finals on pens.
    I would love it if, at some point, you could talk about FBs and compare them to WBs. Especially some exotic uses like the FB on attack, or the IFB.

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would probably only use 2 CWB in a tactic unless I'm a top club and playing lower opposition. Leverkusen I was messing around with 2 CWB, for example. And even then that's a lot of players roaming and upsetting the shape of your tactic; at some point the downsides outweigh the upside.
      Recently I've really started to appreciate using Wingers instead of Wing Backs with Full Backs sitting behind. With the Winger you get the attacking benefits of a player who will stay wide, get in crosses, provide your width, but you have the defensive safety of the Full Backs. And the way the FB sit in the attacking midfield area provides a really nice shell to pin in the opposition.
      I agree, I need to do something on the Full Backs. I can't say they're underrated because I myself don't talk about them a ton haha. Thinking back, I find it interesting that whenever I need to get a result, I use a Full Back not a Wing Back. Like those Luton videos where I use a back 4, I go FB not WB.
      Anyway, all that to say I agree with you. FB = good haha.

    I think you can transpose what that person said about the Libero role onto the modern Libero in FM24,too. Why use the Defend version? Sure, it's not as risky because he doesn't venture as far forward, but if you want that movement anyway, just use IFB's or have cover elsewhere and get the full benefit.

    • @allezxander1232
      @allezxander1232 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've utilised it in weaker leagues to make up for my player's weaknesses. For example, I'd use a cb with good mentals and passing, but low pace and dribbling.
      So he wouldn't venture out of defensive midfield, and act as a DLP in possesion and a cb in defence. It worked quite well.

    i was just changed pedro porro from a wing back on to a complete wingback, he has the most assists in my team and now he is 3 games without an assist and has bad ratings, i thought because he was doing so good a complete wingback would make him more aggresive and creative, but now i understand its not that, its a tactical change from a WB to a CWB.
    i have a question though, i watched a video from TheCoachesVoice (Enzo Maresca • Leicester City tactics), where he explains how he creates a box midfield, I have been trying to create his tactic but i am having a problem with making my winger tuck in and sit in the half space (almost like a mezzala), to be the second player of the top part of the box.
    how can i achieve this. since the IF with stay narrower will still be wider than the half space and so does the inverted winger with stay narrower.
    how can i achieve this?.
    and that would also be my suggestion, you can make videos recreating tactical ideas like the box midfield.

      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      that's a really good idea for a video, thank you! (note this is just a theory and haven't tested it) but have you tried something like an attacking midfielder with the "stay wider" as a player instruction? If you play a formation that has two AMC (like a narrow 4-3-2-1), with stay wider that may force them into the areas your looking at.

      There's no right or wrong, but in my experience, the Complete Wing Back (CWB) shines when there's no wide player ahead of him. This setup truly highlights the CWB's role characteristics. A solid, holding Defensive Midfielder is essential, whether it's one or two. Providing the CWB with space from the wing to within 2 meters of the corner-side penalty area allows him to truly excel. For optimal results, consider pairing the CWB with either a "stay wide" Winger or a "stay narrow" inside Forward.
      Finding a CWB with a truly exceptional all-around skill set is the biggest challenge. It's important to remember that this role isn't independent role. To make it work effectively, you often need to adjust the positions and roles of 3 or 4 players around the CWB to achieve the desired tactical outcome.

      the important thing is that under player instructions the "roam from position" instruction is in the section of instructions that only apply if your team is in possession. In possession (in attack), players roaming from position are very useful, especially if they are creative and have good off the ball attributes, as they can find space that can be exploited to further support your attack.
      And in defense? Well, in defense (out of possession) he is gonna hold his position like the other full back roles.
