    I toss my notepad away and walk in here like a kid that hasn't played football manager before. Love your videos, Sir. The Luton one taught me a lesson. "Sometimes the bigger team is the bigger team, and it's okay to sit back and defend."

      that's awesome!! Love that; really glad these help out. My main message for these Luton videos: it's okay to lose. Put your team in the best position to win and hope for the best... and resist the urge to throw your computer out the window when your team gives up a goal in the 90th minute lol

    See, this is what I love about your channel - I would never think of using a P-AF-EG attacking trident, especially not for a possession system. And yet here I am thinking about what team has a good mix of forwards for that kind of setup... Damnit I really start another save! Cut it out!

    Love the Enganche role, although a possesion tactic is not my style, I really like all the movement that you create to open space for your star player, thats how he was able to shine with 2 assists.
    Btw the poacher is an excellent role and people use to underating, if you provides lots of ways to get him in score positions the poacher can easily get more than 0.50xG per game by himself with the addequate movement inteligence (off the ball, anticipation, composure, decision).
    You are definitely, the best content creator on FM for tactics, cant wait next video, as always you have my like button guaranted.

      Thank you!! Your guy's support always means so much. And you can really see the issues the defenders were having with the two strikers. Also totally agree on the Poacher; there's something to be said for a role that has a singular mindset. Means your more roam-y players have more time and space, which in turn helps the Poacher

    I enjoyed this and learned a few things: thank you.
    I hope you don't mind me pointing out a couple of things: "enganche" is taken from Spanish, where it means "hook" or "connection"; you can see why it was used in football tactics in the AM slot; as it derives from Spanish, I think the last "e" is pronounced: EN-GAN-CHAY.
    Also, less is used with singular words e.g. less possession, less time on the ball, whereas fewer is used with plural words e.g. fewer goals, fewer turnovers.
    Once a teacher, always a teacher 🥸
    All the best for your future output.

    After your defensive tactic video I got the idea to make a transitional tactic based on high pressing from players past the halfway line, and long balls to the flanks to try to force mistakes high up the field, with the rest defence playing a high line, but generally being there to protect space. I’m really surprised to see the possession stats for my strategy are always above or at 50%, but I’m struggling to create goals despite having lots of shots. As a bit of fun, I’ll have a go at making a possession tactic with your advice and see how things compare. Thanks again, and keep it up, these videos are awesome 🎉

      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I love that you're trying out how to make your own tactic! So awesome to hear (read? lol) and glad my videos have helped out. As for your goal scoring issue, it could be any number of things. kind of like in that defensive tactic video, my players were there, just didn't make the play. But it sounds like your tactic is working how you want, there may only need to be a few small tweaks to make to get your goal scoring up.
      In my Roaming Playmaker video, I had an issue where one of my midfielders was on the defend duty but he actually was doing more harm than good. Sometimes all it takes is a simple role change to unlock the rest of your team

      Thank you!! And I'm the same, I don't really use a ton of instructions (I think this one had 5? and most were to do with possession). I will say for these videos in particular, I don't start with team instructions for the sake of showing them as I add them and their effect, not necessarily for a "tactical advantage". Since we did give up a goal in the first 6 minutes in this one haha.
      It is much easier to see your changes though when you start with zero TI. Once you add in a couple you can see the direct affect a couple of small changes can make

    Great video as always 😊 I have to notes:
    1. Doesn't mentality only changes scope of the sliders in team instruction? It is perfectly fine to leave mentality on standard if team instructions are well chosen. In fact changing mentality should be reserved for specific situations. It is always good to start game on standard and if any change is needed, only change specific team instruction.
    2. It would be nice to add a reminder that possesion is nice, but football is a game of space, not possesion. When one build succesfull possesion tactic, next challenge will be to penetrate space, 'couse other ai teams will adapt to your style. Close channels, tighter formations etc. 70% possesion, 0,6 xg. Maybe idea for next video? 😊

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could totally be right on the team instructions! I focused on the positive mentality's "patiently probe" wording and figured that works for possession haha. But the mentality definitely changes the slider settings; I can't remember off the top of my head, but going from "balanced" to "attacking" raises your tempo (or something to that effect).
      And you're preaching to the choir about space! I've got something working about space and creating it (focusing on player roles and formations, not really team instructions)
      Thank you for the notes by the way! Also glad to read feedback on stuff I may be wrong about, or worse, say something confusing in a video!

      @@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker I am eagerly waiting for "space video"! There is always sth to learn in this department :)
      Note from me (slightly related to possession video). I notice, that when coaching much stronger team with dedicated possesion-gegen press tactis, there gonna happen matches when my team out-of-the-blue has only around 40% possesion. What happen is that opposition keep recycling ball between defenders and loses the ball near mid-line. Gegen press works - we won possesion early, but there is no space to create chances 'couse when opposition losses ball, there are still minimum 8 players to defend. I counter this with lowering engegement line. I let more opposition players to come higher. But of course, I would love to hear if there is any better solution to this problem. I personaly believe this is the way, that SI try to fight gegen press meta ;)

Probably a sweeper keeper helps, but I had terrible experiences, so I don't trust the role. @@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker I’ll give ideas in the context of a 442 and you can tailor accordingly, but these are some of the things I ask myself:
      What are the styles of counter attacking and what key attributes would I need in my team to facilitate that? Ex: if I want a high press option I aim for faster more aggressive players, if I want to soak up pressure I get players with good mentals, have big tall cbs with a Gk like mamardashvili who dominates our box etc. Additionally, how can I tweak the tactics (roles, duties, PIs, OIs etc) to match each of those defensive styles. Same applies for offensive styles
      I love on your videos how you watch the match and explain rationale for various tweaks as needed, I think always keeping that portion in your tactics videos is key
      -when to use a high intensity press, vs compact mid/low block (sometimes I intentionally set a low passive block just to maximize the space behind them for the most direct of counter attacks, sometimes I feel forced to set a high press because I can’t beat them in the box, sometimes I also set a lot because they’ve proven they can beat me with long balls over the top)
      In a low/mid block, How do I find the balance between max width for max space and more direct passing to take advantage of favorable matchups (let’s say my lw on their rb or any of my strikers on their cbs) or having a more narrow width to be more compact defensively with shorter passing. Does trapping outside to be more compact in the middle allow me to get away with max width in a mid/low block for max counter pressure via 1v1s, or do I need to make compromises and be more tight when facing a better opponent lest he tear me up otherwise?
      Walking through the different outlet options (through ball, carry into space, target man etc) with examples of tactical changes to induce those would be great.
      How do I find the balance between a sufficient rest defense and being enough of a threat offensively? I could have overlapping fbs to provide a second wave crossing threat, but then am I overexposed at the back?
      Biggest of all for me selfishly speaking, is how do you tailor a counter attacking style for when you are the better team? It’s always been more of an underdog style, can you show us the way to keep that style even after we’ve started getting bigger stars, instead of moving to the more traditional possession + gegenpress style? I look at teams like Liverpool and Newcastle who started out as that high paced counter attacking style, both of whom have also adopted more of a slow and controlled style in recent years when they were the better team.. is that really what it comes down to? Better team controls and worse team relies on counter? I don’t think so since real had periods of a heavy counter style, but how do we translate all those things into in game.

    Great video, my one issue is you’re not correct on the mentality aspect. With a balanced mentality, your team will have a more cautious approach than on positive, meaning that pass you highlighted is typically much less likely to happen. If you wanted creative passing but players to follow their roles more accurately, I’d advise a positive mentality but more disciplined on creative freedom. This would make your anchor focus purely on recycling possession whilst also making every other player follow their instructions more closely

      Perhaps he mistakenly used a balanced mentality anchor pass video clip in a positive context, and vice versa, while creating this long video. Video clips can sometimes be misplaced during editing. He was clearly aware that a player's mentality adapts to their role within a changing tactical mentality. For example, an anchor in a balanced tactical setup has a defensive but cautious role mentality, whereas in a positive one, their role mentality differs.

    I myself came up with a very similar tactic. identical formation but different roles. (3 central denfenders, 2 advanced wing backs, 2 midfilds, 1 offensive midfield and 2 strickers) instead of advanced wing backs I use inverted wingers and instead of defensive midfielders two box to box. the rest remains the same.
    this means that in attack I have 4 players occupying the back of the enemy formation, the fifth playmaker standing between them and the inverted wingers, who go to the center. At the back there are three central defenders protecting against counterattacks. You can put the central defender as libero then he will stand equal to the inverted wingers for total domination of the center of the field, but I do not recommend it because 2 defenders are not enough.
    In the defense i have solid 5 people, nothing can move pass them unles the player has just much better stats. And the box to box come soon after to help making it 7 people on defense.
    In the Spanish league, playing with a weaker team I was able to draw and win with Barcelona, and they did not score a single goal.

      It does affect it! But I find that sometimes the benefit of changing your system completely outweighs the downsides; so in this video for example, we went to a complete different system than the players were used but it was much more important to change and try to stop our losing streak.
      I will say, is that the team familiarity in the dynamics is much more impactful when I watch matches. I forget what the actual name is off the top of my head, but it's in the team dynamics section of your squad view, and if you have a poor rating (like we do at Luton), your players positioning, vision, and overall play will be affected. In my experience, I've found that has been a much bigger issue

      @t3ss33 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I might be wrong but I think trying to express something yourself helps to verify what you really understand. So please view my answer as a challenge and correct me if my thoughts are wrong.
      So naturally there is an individual factor regarding the player role. It might be that Barkley isn't a great dynamic player. However, let us abstract from the player and just argue about the role within the tactical system.
      I think for a possession based system it is important to have a static axis around which the rest of the team can roam. It gives you some form of base to fall back to. Of course roaming players purposely try to offer passing options, but at the cost that they aren't immediately available for the pass. If everyone was roaming there could be situations in which suddenly no one is available. Take for example the situation at 8:24. If Barkley had tried to move (for example forward with the defender), the wing back wouldn't have had a passing option.
      Now, the shown system already has other players to fall back to, namely CB and anchor. However, both of them aren't great playmakers and are there to build a base for the rest defense. So there is a need for a strong base in the last third. This is what the Enganche is suited for (it accentuates the classical role of the 10).
      If the system was different and you have for example a playmaker in the CM or DM position, a more roaming attacking midfielder would probably be better.

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Really glad you liked the video! And @t3ss33 pretty much has the idea. I mentioned in the video how I liked using the Poacher role because he's always going to be on that front line pressuring the defense. Well using the Enganche is a similar idea. He's always going to be in that attacking midfield area; you could see it in that highlight from the 71st minute, just kinda hanging out in that spot. The player roles and team moves around him, and this will move the defenders. The problem (for the defense), is that the Enganche is a playmaker, so if they leave him, which happened a few times in the match, he can make them pay by creating a scoring chance.
      Some other AM player roles probably could've done a similar job (like the advanced playmaker), but I like the role's playmaking abilities and like you say the fact he won't roam too much.

    Hey coach, loving the analysis and your nod to Cruyff's wisdom! Attack as the best defense, amen to that!
    Just checked out your tactics around the 11:19 mark. Here's my take:
    ⬆Attack adjustments:
    FCR - Morris: Consider switching to a Pressing Forward on Attack for more aggression.
    AMC - Barkley: Due to defensive demands, Enganche might not suit a pressing system. Try him as an Attacking Midfielder on support with holding the ball to control play.
    FCL - Brown: A poacher pairs well with an enganche in direct passing setups. For possession-based play, consider a Deep-Lying Forward or Complete Forward on Support, though I understand if Luton lacks that depth. Maybe a position and role to recruit a quality player for in the future to switch your system to dictate play in the future. Make sure he has good passing, vision & dribbling with higher decision-making and technique and flair. But you know the drill 😜
    ➡Midfield adjustments:
    Nakamba: If pressing, switch him to Defensive Midfielder on Support for better play control.
    Volante might not fit well here; as Ogbene seems strong as a Wingback on Attack for width. Consider Ball-Winning Midfielder on Support for defensive balance.
    ⬇Defense adjustments:
    Left Wingback - Bell: Change to Wingback on support to support the attack without a deep lying forward.
    Central defenders: Potts (Wide Centre-back Defend), Anderson (Central Defender Cover), Mengi (Wide Centre-back Defend) could enhance defensive solidity.
    Then considering your striker quality and away play, hat off for the result you got here. All my adjustment proposals are not needed you got the three points 😅
    But maybe you can take some pointers from it, and try it out.
    Would say keep tweaking based on match feedback!
    One of your many fans keep up the great work👋

      I love these thank you!! I'll definitely try to see if I can work these into the next-next video (the upcoming tactic video's match is already done... as a hint, it's nothing like this one lol). But I think this system (343, more possession) is how I'll play going forward in the future. I loved the ball movement, so I'll try out your suggestions to see if I can further improve the tactic.
      For the strikers with Luton, I've found that they either need to be in the Advanced Forward/Poacher vein (like we saw in this one but I have some stuff using them as Pressing Forwards.) Or I've used Adebayo as a Target Forward like in the other videos. He doesn't really have the playmaking attributes I'd want for a DLF; but I think you're right I'd love to recruit a new DLF to implement in the tactic.

      @@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker yes my guess is you need a poacher advanced forward because of the structured approach, you can go fluid with a deep lying forward, but as Luton you just lack quality to pull it off

    So a team instruction I have a hard time grasping is “run at defense”. I try to use it at times to get highlights like R9 or Ronaldhino etc dribbling around and thru their defenders but they all just seem to get pocketed easily. Any guidance for this, Guru DLP?

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How I've used "run at defense" in the past is if I want my team to counter, but not just hoof it up the field. So "run at defense" will tell them to dribble up the field, and along with a higher tempo, create a counter attack that way. (not that that's the only way to use it, but that's how I've generally used it)
      Are you trying to get a specific player to create those plays? Or more of a tactical style where multiple players can do it? And what kind of player roles do you like to use? Hoping to get an idea of how you like to play, and then we can go from there!

    • @TheTraaaaaaa
      @TheTraaaaaaa 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Usually if I'm trying to generate some ankle breaking tackles I'm using wingers and a striker role like an AF/CF or a Treq. As far as style goes, kinda just want to see wingers behave like classic wingers, you know? take their defender on by attempting to dribble past him.

    • @piersonjamesa
      @piersonjamesa 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheTraaaaaaa try playing around with the team mentality, Run at defense has center mids take players on more, from the winger base player instructions he has dribble more, with the explanation as follows: "Dribble more encourages players to be more individualistic and seek to make gains by dribbling their way past opponents, rather than passing their way towards goal" So think of "dribble more" (PI) and "Run at defense (TI) in your tactic as telling your other players besides your wingers to take their opponent on, rather than passing. I like it when your players are either quick and better at dribbling than passing, or you want to win free kicks and slow the game down if you succeed, it is risky if they are shoved off the ball however.
      If your want your winger to take on players and either try tricks or beat their man repeatedly, consider teaching them those player traits under the training menu for the player.
      for what its worth, i think that unless you can isolate them 1v1 against a fullback or better a cm, then usually they just get tackled in the match engine.

    Just lost to a 10-man Leipzig at home as Arsenal, they had red card since 38th minute and I managed only 45% possession the whole game. I really don't know what am I doing wrong. I was playing shorter passes, lower tempo, but that just give them time to press the shit out of me. And when their players have the ball mine are no where near them, they all have time to turn around and create chances.
    It's seems like if you are not using Gegenpress 100% of the time this game refuses to work. Sooo frustrating.

      @@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Yeah, it seems like it. I managed to turn my season around. After being 10 pts from the top in November I managed to climb and finish just 3 pts behind Liverpool with 19 matches unbeaten run. I increased my overall possession and control of the game but I really had trouble breaking teams down, a lot of those games ended up with me winning just 1-0, expecially against "smaller teams".
      Also new tactic that I set up helped me to lift Champions League trophy against Barcelona (revenge for Parsi 2006). I'll have to find a way how to break opponents more regularly in a new season.

      I like to use pass into space with a more direct style or high tempo, since the pass will go up the field into space for a player to run on to. But that's not to say it wouldn't work with a possession tactic, but generally if I use it it's with a direct and/or high tempo

      Yep I would consider him another midfielder; the inverted wingback too if you're feeling ambitious. I would say sometimes those roles (someone who's not a midfielder but moves into the midfield) may affect possession since it's not their starting position, but the idea is still the same. But like the others have mentioned, if you're using the Libero in a formation that already has 3 midfielders (ex: a 4231), than that can be an awesome way to build possession
