  • I got a tag for a spike elk in Utah for 2017, this will be my first time hunting. This is verifying ballistic data in high altitude in cooler temperatures. As similar of conditions as i can hope for during the hunt to have as accurate of information possible. I will be hunting with my Tikka T3x chambered in 243 shooting factory Federal Fusion 95 Gr. bullets. To maximize effectiveness with the smaller cartridge I am planning on keeping my shot within 300 Yards to keep energy high and increase the lethality of the round on large game.
Max point blank range is choosing a target size, say 10" and zeroing the rifle for a range that maximizes the range to make the farthest possible shot while the bullet stays within 5" up and 5" drop from the muzzle. so it is point and shoot on a 10" target at whatever distance that cartridge is capable of. you can choose the target size which will change the distance of max point blank range

Awesome video! Really fantastic editing and camera work. I love my little .243 for game in the PNW.

Great video and awesome that you are giving hunting a try! I know that you are a good shooter which is good, because bullet placement will be extremely important when using a light caliber like .243 Win for elk. Hope you have a successful hunt!

Great video! and i'm jealous that your wife came with you to help... my wife "tolerates" my shooting habits, and that word may be even a strong one. Thanks again for your videos and look forward to your continued series on reloading as that's going to be a significant hobby of mine starting in a few months

Great shooting and a nice get to the point video. Placement is very essential when hunting Elk with a .243.

Welcome to hunting! Prepare to be frustrated yet addicted. I would check zero after taking that brake of personally. Wow that is beautiful country. Best of luck Brother!

I got mine zeroed at 26 yards and then rezeroed at 100 yards for windage as its perfect 3 inches high at 100. Just have to adjust left or right to get it in line with bullseye. Im also doing this with my 30.06

If you take that muzzle brake off you should probably reconfirm zero because I can guarantee it's going to mess with your barrel harmonics.

Good fieldcraft, Making the shot count is 50% of what the Hunt is about. Using shooting sticks is a prerequisite for long range shooting, it's just being smart in the end. My hope,,, should I say is that you get confident enough to use slinging techniques, like in the Notional match prone position to take the shot, I feel that you are well on your way to becoming a real competitor because you get it with understanding the dynamics of shooting discipline. Might want to recheck zero if removing the brake.

I hunted elk with a guy that used a .243. It's at the low end of elk guns and better suited for deer but he was a crack shot and placed his shots to great effect.
