    Thanks, great video. I just bought my S170 a few weeks ago. I already knew about the Quick Change oil filter issues, but had no idea this tractor does not have front wheel bearings. I'm under 4 hours and am going to order those bearings today.

      Don’t order the bearings until you look at your front wheels. You may have bearings. John Deere brought the bearings back in the 2024 model. You may want to install the Thrust Needle Roller Bearings in this video.th-cam.com/video/ntXZWcNsYQ0/w-d-xo.html. It will work with your S170,

    Wonderful. I have an LA160 with 190 hours on it. While I grease the hubs every year I can only imagine what my spindles look like. Not happy with JD over this design when bearings should have been used in the first place. Will take them off tomorrow to see what they look like. Great video!

      A bushing bearing is actually stronger and usually has better wear characteristics in low speed applications. IF... they are lubricated, and relatively shielded from abrasive contaminants. A shot of grease every season is more than 95% of them ever see. I bet you are in fine shape.

      @@Failure_Is_An_Option but we seen the wobble this guy had after only 15 hours service. the clearance on his bushings was way too big out of factory.
      my TroyBilt TB-105 push mower has bushings and after 10 years the wheels are wobbling like crazy (i had no idea i should've been greasing them).

    I have a 2023 late production S130. They listened and are now using front wheel bearings , but there's no grease zirc fitting on the wheel anymore. For the EZ change oil conversion, if you want an easier drain set up, they have a factory style drain hose that clips right onto the side of the engine. You install a barb type fitting into the engine instead of the metal pipe. Both the hose and the fitting are available on Amazon. Another great upgrade is LED headlamp bulbs. I got projector style and they are really bright.

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      How about that. What size mower deck do you have? The last person said he has a S180 that came with wheel bearings but he has a 54” mower deck and that would explain it. Well, I’m glad to hear they’re finally stepping up. All of the years prior all have bushings and all wear out the front axles prematurely. Yes the LED lights I have started to use on some old tractors that needed better lighting. I will put together a video for the poor man’s power steering, the LEDs. Thanks for the heads up!

  • @rvalens2
    @rvalens2 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Great idea about installing bearings in the front wheels. However, I went one step further and also installed flat roller bearings in the pivot points on the front axles. My mower now turns with one finger and I can push it with one hand by simply leaning on it. Another upgrade I did was to install grease fittings into the spindles on the mower deck. I then drilled and tapped weep holes that I sealed with a small bolt that I can loosen. When grease starts to ooze out from around the bolt, I know the spindle is full of grease.

    • @rvalens2
      @rvalens2 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For the small amount it would cost, it's unbelievable that lawn tractor manufacturers don't automatically do these upgrades. 1. Bearings instead of bushings 2. Flat roller bearings in the steering pivot points. 3. Spindles with grease fittings. They will make your mower easy to turn, roll and those spindles will last for years and years. 🤨🤔🙄

      i am doing an E-170 with about 320 hours on it and all original parts about 4 years old and the front shafts were worn down almost half the diameter. the owner did even notice the wobble in the front tires. but i did and he already has a new set of bushings but i think i might give him a call and see if he wants to just replace them with sealed bearings. i think it will fit his needs better he’s in his 70’s and don’t wanna have to keep greasing the them every few uses. and his yard is about 5 acres with a driveway almost a half mile long with 3 passes on the each side of his driveway.

    What's the thread size on the quick change is 3/8-18 NPTF? I'm looking at using this design on a Kohler 7000 series for Craftsman/Troy-Bilt instead of the yellow plastic oil drain kit that Kohler sells. John Deere also sells a longer 5-inch version p/n AM131612. I saw one for sell on eBay and this was how i found out about the part number. Kohler also has another quick-change fitting that is all metal with a 90 degree on it. P/n 25 462 12-S* 2" 25 462 13-S 3". It's about $45 and $52 for those fittings. The AM131612 was being used on a John Deere L130 with a Kohler Command Pro CV23S engine. To install the Kohler 90-degree fittings, a pipe extension would be required to clear the frame. Do you have any videos showing those Kohler fitting being installed? I didn't want a long quick disconnect hose. And want something similar to the John Deere design. Is the John Deere quick change more reliable than the Kohler yellow quick disconnect fitting?

    So I went to do a bushing replacement as part of my 8 hour maintenance, only to find out my S130 already has ball bearings, and the wheel itself has no spot for connecting a grease gun. Is this new to the S series?

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Strange, I went and looked up the S130 on the John Deere parts look up and it only shows bushings and even the grease fitting for the rim. No bearings. Maybe they changed it in production. What is the date of manufacturing on your sticker above the left rear tire? What size mower deck do you have? Someone else said the S180 with a 54” mower deck also had bearings. I would get a grease gun, remove the tire from the machine and fill the hub the best you can with grease to help keep moisture out. If you’re really handy, you can get a zerk fitting, drill and tap threads in the rim so you can grease. You should be just find if you fill the hub or just go with what you have. At least you’re much better off with bearings and will not have the wear issue.

      @@JohnsonsSmallEngines I called up the local dealer who assembles the JD’s for Lowes, he told me that the wheels were upgraded. He didn’t elaborate if it’s across the board or for the ones they set up. I did in fact finish all 8 hour lubrication as indicated, and just hand packed grease into the “upgraded” wheels. The manufacture date on my machine is 02/21/24, and it has a green deck, not yellow.

  • @Rags722
    @Rags722 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The bearing upgrade came out when my LA145 was about 7 years old. I had already gone through one set of bushings and the second set was ready for replacement. The bearings were cheaper than the bushings, but by that time the spindles were so worn I also had to replace the spindles. I'm actually surprised to see JD is still putting bushings in new products. Stupid design then, still stupid today!

      This video was for most all 100 series. You just have to look at your machine to see if you have bearings or bushings. If your front wheels do not have grease fittings on the inside of the rims, you do not have the bushings, you have the ball bearing type. Check under the hood to see if you need the oil filter kit.

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines

      This video was made for the 100 series. You will need to look at your front rims and if you do not have grease fittings you do not have bushings, you have the better bearings, Open the hood to see if you have the quick change oil filter or not.
