Nothing wrong with a single cylinder, for that reason alone you don’t know what you’re talking about. The transmission is called a hydrostatic. Not finishing this review.

My 1995 year Murray has a single cylinder 14.5 hp engine. No problems with the engine and I have been mowing a 2 acre yard for 30 YEARS. The deck is badly worn near the chute because of the years of discharge. I think I will retire it this year and get a Husq with a single cylinder engine,

Replaced my Murray Select I bought in 2006 last year. Tried to find the husky 42" with the Kawasaki twin but could not find it except in the 48" deck and it was 3800 USD. Was at home depot and saw the new Murray MT200 only lawnmowers I have ever had were Murray. Been cutting my yard with it since and it is also about 1500 cheaper and it has the metal transmission. For me it has been such a great improvement from the Select series. It climbs hills, of which I have a mostly hilly yard with out any issues. Turns on a dime. Just gonna see if it last 16 years like my last one.

In July 2024, if you find a new Husqvarna at a big box store, it’s from last year or before. Now you can only get a 2024 model from a dealer.

If you have a local john deere dealer, check their used inventory. They often have really nice low hour trade ins for cheap. A new x350 with a 48" deck would run you around $4200,but get one with 70-80 hours on it and take about $1k off that retail price

I bought a new Poulan Pro, 46" cut with a single cylinder 20hp Briggs in 2010 and still have it today and mow with it every week during mowing season. It has a metal hydrostatic transmission. It has cruise control and I can mow in reverse by turning the key to the left one notch after starting it. I can put the parking brake on and it will run while I step off of it to move debris. It was made by Husqvarna and while it does have a stamped steel deck, it's very thick and has a lifetime warranty. I do maintenance on it every spring, changing the oil and filters, sharpening blades, checking the spark plug, etc. And have replaced belts, Idler wheels and pulleys, battery and spindles on it a couple of times when needed. It still cranks right up every time and I mow about an acre a week with it. When it does eventually wear out I'll be buying a Husqvarna to replace it with. I like the idea of a John-Deere, but I don't like their practice of making parts that you can't buy cheaper aftermarket versions of and I hate what they've done to farmers, making equipment that you can't even work on yourself because you can't get the software for it and have to take it to a dealer to have it repaired.

We have a 2004 Husqvarna LT151 36" mower-deck. It's a single cylinder Kohler Courage and a metal transmission, put on a new valve-cover gasket before the last season, I also built up a new mower-deck before the 2022 season and serviced the transmission brake.. I have learned that the Kohler courage has a bit of a bad reputation, but at least our one has been a good performer.. and I would prefer that over a newer one with a plastic transmission 🙂had a look at the sump cover bolts when I did the valve cover gasket and the was no sign of any of the coming loose.
We also have a Husqvarna R112C with a single cylinder briggs engine and a metal transmission
One of the things I have learned watching You-tube videos is to stay far away from anything with a plastic transmission regardless of what brand of mower it is!

It doesn’t make me wonder at all. They intentionally make proprietary expensive crap like this “Easy Oil Change” system to get more money out of your pocket. It only replaces about 25% of the oil volume with clean oil so it really does nothing in reality but cost you 3 times as much.

Unless youre buying a heavy duty commercial mower, a diesel usually front mount they kind of are. They are at the end of the day throw aways after 10 years. We've been using Toro diesels on our farm, latest is the 455d 126" cut. Got it for just under 6k with 1500 hours. Lucky find. It will run forever if taken care of.
