    This dude should give *credit hours* and offer some sorta *certificate* for completing his videos. Thorough; lot of good info. You almost have to take notes and study. Probably the only channel you need if you wanna know about John Deere mowers. He got me through the difficult time in my life.... where I had to *sort through thousands of features, details, specs and nuances just to figure out which frickin riding mower to buy.* {I think I've settled on the S170.}

    I ended up buying an S100 last week. (pick it up 6-22-21) Lawn mowers are just about not attainable right now thanks to the lunacy going on in the world. There were only 3 S100s left on the west coast Pape store network. No box stores had stock. Anyways, thanks to your reviews it helped me feel like I wasn't buying into total garbage. My trusty 1992 Craftsman/Murray 30" rear engine finally exploded the transmission and the grass is getting tall lol.

    I have a flat 3/4 of an acre. I don't need a big mower, it can be 30" but nothing bigger than 42", because right now I use a push mower, while that is great for a excellent work out, I'm not getting any younger (60 yrs) and anything is better than walking for 3 hours especially in a North Carolina summer. By the way, I don't need to have a Zero Turn mower, just a solid and not expensive vehicle. Thank you for your suggestions!

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think any of the S100's would be a good fit for you. The models with a 42" deck are the S100, S110, S120, and S130. I would suggest the S120 or S130 for the higher HP v-twin engine. Does this help narrow it down?

    Thanks for the video. Lady doesn't have a lot of grass to cut. So basic machine is what i got her . Once ir drued up so could use , she to it for a test run. Some test run test. She had such a great time on it she cut the front and back lawns. She's not a person that likes a lot of bells and whistles . So this model is perfect for her. • @mreaper7458
      @mreaper7458 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Belts fine no issues, I feel like belts are slipping and breaking because of misuse or quickly turning on and off the PTO. If you do it fast enough and often it will stretch and break just like any other belt. But if you treat it properly and make smooth movements at normal speed it should be fine. The other thing is if the tractor has been sitting outside in a climatic environment the heat, moisture and temperature change along with use will probably cause detoriation more quickly. Just like car belts they aren't designed to last forever.

    I love you videos, thank you. One thing that I (and I'm sure thousands of others) can not find is a how to on cleaning our small JD lawn tractor. Online posts suggest NOT to wash it at all as it might rust, especially deck and under foot board areas, some suggest only to use compressed air etc. to blow it clean. The problem is that after a long day out mowing, my tractor is dusty and dirty, NO amount of air blowing will get this dusty grime off. If you make another vid, please show folks like me how to wash these expensive tools we bought. MANY THANKS!

    Thank you for your time, and information, well done!
    The wife, and I just returned home from shopping for lawn tractors. I must say I was sold on the S100, I mean it's really all we need for our .5 acre residential property.
    I must say, I've always wanted a John Deere, now I'm not so sure, 8 different models just in this series alone, with varying degrees of quality!
    Your review, as well as the customers reviews I've read on this model, now have me leaning towards further investigation.
    Perhaps someday we could focus more of our attention on quality, instead of on how we can slip our way into everyone's credit rating...
    Thanks again,
    Don

    I have watched several videos about the JD S100. I understand that the smaller B&S engine is a knock off made in China, and that there are some cam issues with the Chinese version. Can you confirm, or reject that information? I want to buy the JD, but May have to buy the Cub Cadet with the truly US made Kohler engine. Please advise.

    Please be sure to let folks know that the E100/S100 is really a throw away lawn mower. You'll be lucky if you make it a year without major issues. We bought the E100 by John Deere because of the name, however they are junk. It blew a head gasket almost immediately (11 hours), had that fixed under warranty, then the fix failed, also the transmission is encased in plastic not cast aluminum or steel. The repair shop said out loud these low end mowers are junk, and they wish Deere would not offer them. John Deere used to be a name/brand that meant quality product of workmanship, evidently not any more. We have since sold it to another unsuspecting party and bought another brand.

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well I have to disagree about the throw away mower part. The plastic transmissions have gone away as of 2021 and just like any brand some issues do arise with the engines. I totally understand your frustration as I would be to if this happened to me. But I can tell you these mowers will last as long as they are maintained accordingly. Once again, I am sorry to hear of your bad experience but thanks for watching!

    • @craighellberg4366
      @craighellberg4366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s sad that you had that experience. I don’t know about John Deere, but I am 62 years old I can tell you that companies that once made high-quality equipment for professional use cannot compete with the lower end/homeowner type units because of the cheaply made crap out of China. Companies known for their excellence try to get into that market by sacrificing quality to be able to make the price point but it just doesn’t work.

    Great information. I was hoping to be able to buy an S140 from my local JD dealer, but they are charging over list price, as compared to Lowes. Plus they want $125 for delivery, whereas Lowes is free. I am trying to negotiate with them, but the difference is almost $250 for the same mower. Nor sure if it's common for JD dealers to charge over list price, or if it is just this particular one.

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d go check with another dealer, then if they are doing the same thing, it’ll leave you no choice but to get from Lowe’s. If it’s not convenient to go to another Deere dealer, sometimes you can go to the same Deere dealer but just a different one of their stores and get different results.

For instance in your example The D140 would be the oldest, then the E140, then S140, and I believe the X100 series machines are sold in other countries other than the United States. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    I bought a brand new JD S220, $3,267.00. It was over a year ago, it only has 19 hours on it, because it is a piece of junk. There are so many bad things on the mower, it's crazy. From filling the gas tank, to engaging the deck, and from raising the deck to junk blades , I could go on and on and on! I own 2 LX266 John Deere mowers, there isn't one thing on those two mowers that are junky like the S220, which has a bunch of plastic parts.

    Thanks for the run-down of the 100-series. I live where the snow could easily pile up over a foot overnight. What's your suggestion on a lawn tractor that would have the power and build to have a dual purpose of mowing about a half-acre of grass once a week during the summer and potentially several snow blowing jobs every week for 5-6 months out of the year? I'm going to guess the driveway is at least a 6-car size from the garage door out to the road and then also another 3-4 car space on the side. Thanks for any recommendation!

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say for this you would want to at least be up in the X300 range for the extra weight and frame strength for the snow attachments. Maybe start by looking at an X350.

I have used a stick since day one to manually check and it's only a month old! Is the tank itself free floating on top of a spring? • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have mowed a lot with these mowers and I wouldn't say they have flex in the frame but the front axle does allow the mower to ride smooth over bumpy terrain and the deck allows float over bumps since it rides on a hanger system. Thanks for watching!

    Imho JD has cheapened their mowers in several areas ,the transaxles in the cheaper models are using I believe the same terrible hydro from the ill fated Sabre line .The single cylinder Briggs are probably still using the same auto compression release that disintegrates inside the engine ,correct me if I am wrong. Btw I have a JD stx 38 that runs the Kohler engine and TT46 transmission, it is nearly 30 years old and is built like a tank and is still going strong . I am writing these comments in the hope JD will change course with their mowers and improve them for I believe JD is losing their market share .When I go looking for a new mower it won't be green and yellow.

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely get where you are coming from, and the bad part is that the most visual to the public (S100's) are the lowest grade mower. So, in turn, they get a bad rep for being perceived as low quality. What gets missed is that there are larger and more high-quality models at the dealership that stack up more to the competitive larger models that can be seen at the large retail stores. This is why I try to keep everyone informed that you do have more choices. I will tell you that when you break them (S100's) down to the nuts and bolts they are built with superiority over most other brands, but it is done in a way that is not seen by the naked eye, such as frame build and steering arms, things that give this mower longevity. I say this in hopes that people see this and really dig in and try to look at these things before making their decision.

    At what point should one consider the ELS engine? I have about 40k sf to cut, for 5 months of the year. I'm looking at the S130 vs S160 and wondering if the difference in price is worth it. Same with the K46 heavy-duty hydrostatic transaxle - why and at what point would one want the heavy-duty transaxle. Great videos!

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So the ELS engine is an upgraded version with more quality components in the engine itself just increasing the life of this engine, so for somebody that feels like they will be using this mower for long cutting times and looking for longer life longevity of the engine this would be the way to go. Also, moving to the K46 transaxle just gives a heavier build and more power to the ground so I encourage to always look to go up into the K46 if possible. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I do have a quick question...my first mow (after leveling the deck) went well, engine running smoothly, but felt some excess vibration when engaging blade (manual lever PTO). I'm guessing that the hardware needs a few mows to break it all in...or my blades are outta balance. Everything underneath (belts, cables, etc. look fine)...thoughts??? The advantages of going up to the S220 is that you get an upgraded Briggs and Stratton engine compared to the 100 series, you get the heavier AccelDeep deck, and the warranty jumps from 2-year/120 hours to 3-years/200 hours. Well the capacity on the S160with the Easy Change Oil System will total 2.8 Quarts since you filter hold oil as well. I will check on this a little further and see if I see this same issue on other mowers. Thanks for this comment and thanks for watching!

    My question is..... so is the s100 gonna be reliable #1 and #2 is it gonna be reliable? I hear alot of negative feedback about the belts. Im mowing 1 acre of fairly flat land. Any help on this would be perfect!! Thank you youtube family!

      I have heard many complaints on the belt for this particular model but not so much on the step up to the S110 or the S120. Not sure what is causing the issue still to this day. My recommendation would be to spend the extra money to go up a model to the S110, but I know that may not be doable. Thanks for watching and i hope this helped!

      I read a review that someone posted that their belt fell off then broke so they went and bought a new belt but went 1 inch smaller than what Cohn Deere recommended and they say they haven’t had any issues from that since. I just bought the s100 yesterday so it will be delivered next month…I can’t wait

    What would you suggest for a hilly yard?

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. I would suggest the upper end of the S100 series or maybe even something in the X300 series. The better transaxle you have, the better performance on hilly yards you will have. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Can the 140 pull an aerator without hurting the transmission?

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a good question. I think this would just depend on the situation and how it was being pulled and with how much weight. I'm sorry I don't have a more clear answer. Thanks for watching!

    Is it possible to get the S170 with a 42" deck instead of the 48"?

      It’s too wide for a smaller deck

    I am looking at the S170 model as I don’t think I can extend budget for the x300 series. I like the better/stronger engine and the deck having at least 4 anti-scalping wheels. When being honest, is there any main issues you have heard about when it comes to s170? Also, what is your opinion of John Deere’s quick oil change system as I have heard lots of negativity about it and seen videos of how you can buy a kit to switch it to the traditional set up?

      I have honestly not heard of any issues with the S170. As far as the 30 second oil change goes, I think it is a great option and does a good job for the customer base these mowers are intended for which are the occasional users, not the professional landscapers that will be putting on a ton of hours. But like you said, you can always change it back to the conventional style. Good questions and thanks for watching!

      @@WesternEquipment I would love to step up to the x300 series but I don’t think I can do the over $3000 price for that series. So base on what I have seen, the s170 is good quality since it’s on the high end of the s100 series that would last me for years as I do take good maintenance care of my equipment. In your opinion then, you would or wouldn’t switch to the conventional oil system since I plan to keep this for years to come?

      @@jarrodhermann1088 If it were me I think I would switch it to the conventional filter. That's not to say that their engineers got it wrong. In my opinion leaving half the oil in the engine probably isnt the best idea,the ez change filters are very expensive ( comparatively),and its not like changing oil takes a degree in engineering. Either way,I'm sure you'll get several years out if it. If you're the kind of guy who dreads oil changes,it may be for you. I like using high quality oil designed for air cooled engines and genuine oem filters.
