    I played a Korean MMO that thought "asshopper" was a curse word. It was a martial arts game. New players were called grasshopper BY THE GAME ITSELF. If you called someone "grasshopper" it became "gr*********". People started calling new players "butthumpers" because that WASN'T censored.

    The most aggressive filter I've encountered was in the online game ESO.
    It would make entire sentences disappear if you accidentally included a banned word, so "My pen isn't writing" would turn into "My * * * * * * * * writing", thus making your sentence completely illegible.

      My school had a similar filter, and thanks to that nobody could search for a lot of "experts", as long as the previous word ended with an s. Which is a problem in German, because we have the compound words, so the "economy expert" is a compound of "Wirtschaft" (economy) and "Experte" - but here is the kicker: By compounding two such words, you always ad an "s" in between ("wirtschaftSexperte).

    Years ago my brother got a new phone, and as soon as the SIM was activated, he started to get calls from some girls accusing him of stealing their friend's phone. They were very talkative, and my brother would speak to them at length (usually on speakerphone with a room full of his mates), attempting to explain that this was a new phone and that he'd probably just been allocated the number that their friend had previously had. At one point, in desperation, he asked them where they were in the country (to establish that it was unlikely he had stolen their friend's phone if he lived miles from where they were). When they replied "Scunthorpe" the entire room burst out laughing and kept repeating "Sc-c*nt-thorpe" and didn't stop until long after the girls had hung up. Poor Scunthorpe.

    I played an old Lego MMO (Lego Universe) which banned the use of numbers to avoid kids giving out phone numbers. Which didn't really help when player names could have numbers in them and you'd need to refer to them, and the game had a trade system. In fact, it used a whitelist that removed a whole bunch of words, including words in the game itself, so by the time the game shut down (not long after due to a different moderation issue), there was just this entirely separate dialect of English in this MMO.

      Blacklist, not whitelist. A blacklist blocks things, a whitelist allows them. If you throw a party and don't allow Tom Scott to come, you've created a blacklist. If you allow _only_ Tom Scott to come and nobody else, you've created a whitelist. They're both creating exceptions, but with different default conditions-whether everything's allowed or nothing is.

    I've been part of internet communities since 2005/6 and frankly I run into censoring issues again and again. I don't know how with the knowledge the internet provides, people repeatedly make the same mistakes. People repeatedly create systems that flag or remove blacklisted words that are incredibly short-sighted. It's honestly mind-boggling. A little research would tell you how bad of an idea your approach is. Heck, a little testing would too. I really don't understand it, and I think it is inexcusable. I never take it lightly when I get censored, kicked or banned for no reason, and if those in charge refuse to do something about it ASAP, I sure take my leave. What nonsense!

    Someone decided to save characters by filtering out "unnecessary" words such as "and" and "or" in the recipient line. Mom had to deal with many labels for letters addressed to names like "Erson" (Anderson), "Rews" (Andrews), "Ville" (Orville), and other abbreviations.

    I play Star Trek Online, and last year they launched a prize box themed to the events of the Star Trek: Voyager two-parter "Year of Hell". the top prize was a replica of the temporal weapon ship from those episodes. But the game's official forum was set to censor out the word "hell"to which I once said "How the hell can we talk about the Year of Hell, if we can't say hell?" they quickly fixed it.

    • @fabske-sr1vd

      Thank God, finally somebody who notices that. Although, the Iconian war as a whole (in the game), was a greater mess.

    • @viperhalberd
      @viperhalberd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think everything in Voyager had a reset button at some point or other! What about The Killing Game one? Janeway's log entry says "The damage to Voyager has been EXTREME". They literally cut out entire decks. Next episode, everything's hunky dory and it's never mentioned again!
      Great video Tom, thanks a lot :)

      +metropod +Tom Scott Hah, I've just been recently rewatching Voyager. Just passed that episode last night actually. Their expounding on the concepts of causality and how changing a single thing could have incredibly far reaching and unpredictable consequences and yet somehow they still believed they could find just the right one?! I mean I know the commander was meant to be driven half nuts on his quest to get his wife and family back but sheesh.. I mean they do love to throw in time travel and manipulation in every star trek and they always kinda make some oddball nonsense when doing it :p Janeway even riffs on this as a character! "I always swore to myself that I'd avoid it!" (Time travel) and similar comments across various episodes

    • @marajin
      @marajin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +viperhalberd Come to think of it, the year of hell two parter didn't make sense anyway. The whole earlier episode with Kes travelling back in time due to the chroniton radiation interfering with the Doctor's attempts to slow/reverse her aging process... They do make a comment to the effect that she should reveal to them important tactical information about the future and yet somehow when the year of hell two-parter comes around nobody seems to have a damn clue who the Krenim are! I suppose it's possible that the temporal weapon has altered history so much by that point that it redacts the events of that storyline but it's still kinda odd that they seemed to almost deliberately put in that hook to mean that the Voyager crew would be forewarned about the Krenim.

    so if you typed “my home is nice” it would post “my is nice”
    to get around it you type “my Hhomeome is nice” the filter removes the word home, completely but it only does a single pass so your post now reads “my Home is nice”
