  • Shadi Ayoub is the founder of the 961 Collective, a letterpress printing and hot foil stamping studio in Cleveland, Ohio. Watch as he demonstrates the letterpress process on a Heidelberg Windmill.
Shadi grew up in Beirut, Lebanon where his family owned a modern offset printing press; but he was always drawn to the beauty of the old presses that were rarely used at the back of the print shop because they were “outdated”. He became very fond of those timeless machines, and over time restored most of them back to functionality. He always found the quality of the beautiful prints and textures they produced to be incomparable with modern prints.
Shadi majored in Business Administration at the American University of Beirut but printmaking was always his passion. Years after graduating from the business department, he went back to that same university but this time to teach letterpress as part of their printmaking department.
If you have any questions for Shadi, you can message him via his website: www.the961collective.com

Hi Shadi... Thank you for posting this video tutorial. I am learning how to operate these beautiful old machines, and now have two ! One for Die Cutting,,which i seem to have mastered, and the other is purely for printing . Your video has given me many tips and the encouragement to get on and do it. Best wishes all the way from the U.K. David

You are an awesome teacher. I very much enjoyed how you carefully explained everything. I believe you gave me encouragement when I was inquiring about my Adast Graphopress GPF on the letterpress website. I still need a metal distributer roller for this machine. Some day .. I was thinking about making one from aluminum.

Nice video! I ran offset presses for 40 years. The ink company should be able to supply you with round sheets to cover the ink after you skin it. It’s the only way to go. Saves time and product. Or you can always put the can on a sheet of paper and trace a circle and cut it out to place over the fresh ink.

Hi! We are not able to get the Delivery Table to release from the Feed table. We are not able to lower the delivery table without moving the feed table. When we rotate the wheel on the right, it just moves both tables. Is there a release? Thank you!

That is a old pms book. You did not show how to put the Packing on correctly using the gauge ? Underlay needs to be done so the proper make ready , cut out the high spots so the image does not punch the paper. The correct pressure is just kiss the surface of the stock. Make ready done under the oiled manilla top sheet.

Makeready is very important, but to say there is only one correct pressure is not valid in this day and age. When letterpress did everything from newspapers to books to business forms, you did not want to see the impression on the back distorting that sides text. But letterpress is now a niche market and deep impression is an artistic choice (depending on how much wear you are willing to accept on your type). It’s just as valid as kiss impression.

You need to be shown by a old letter press tradesman how to do a proper makeready not just punch the sheets as the vine type punches in more than the solid arears

You are right that's not made ready, it's just punching through, no skill there, my foreman would have kicked my arse if I had have done that as an apprentice.

As a matter of fact I am (was, retired now) As a qualified practical trainer, I was part of the examination board in Amsterdam of the Graphic Training Centre for many years. As I said, I completely agree with your earlier statement. However, the presenter of the video made a different choice and I understand where he is coming from. Personally, I think it would take a lot of time to explain the registered way of printing and would be difficult for most viewers to understand.

@@RobertKlok cool I started in letterpress many makes and models. Then offset from Rolland miller planita komori Heidelberg cx102 was last offset now doing foil embossing die cut more interesting than loading plates and button pushing. I don't know what's going to happen to the industry when all the knowledge is gone. No one trained for that any more.

@@jamestanner9198 how nice, exactly the same route for me but left the trade when I turned 40 and took the opportunity to continue to work in ICT. I think new machines will be developed for each discipline, and yes our breed will become extinct rather soon. Though, I am still happy to see videos like this and to know there are people out there still willing to pick up the trade as artists
