Would you guys consider reviewing a brand called Allbirds? They make trainers that are supposedly all natural materials (except laces are recycled plastic i think?) but non leather. Like running shoes made of wool and some plant based mid/out sole. Would be worth seeing how they compare to foam and plastic of main trainer brands. They are somewhat popular, or at least have enough funding to advertise on socials a lot lol. Don't know if enough to justify cost for a video though.
Any prospect that I might drop $220 for these shoes (and, to be clear, I WAS contemplating it), went RIGHT out the window when that plate on the bottom snapped. Good job, Solomon. Wow...
Same here. My pair of HOKA’s are seeing their last miles, and as a big fan of the XT-6 & ACS Pro from Salomon, I was looking at these for my next running shoe. No thanks! These companies have no integrity. They’re there to make money and that’s it. Such a shame.
The split heel which is now used by a few running shoe manufacturers, controls your heel strike. Think of how your outside rear of the heel makes contact and then rolls forward. Having a split encourages the foot's forward roll to follow a path towards the big toe and stops the ankle rolling inward too much.
Interesting. U-tech by the company Tru motion have a U shaped ring around the heel for the same reasons, probably acts in the same way as the split i guess...
One, if you're a heavier guy, you're not really getting the spring and energy return of a carbon plate. You want more cushioning if anything. Don't bother with the carbon plated stuff until you're pushing a 3 hour marathon; It's a waste of money. Two, the split back is a decoupled groove. It's mostly there since you don't really put weight in your heel at racing speeds if you're a good runner, so you don't need much material there, but cutting out the material saves weight and makes you faster. It's a very common thing, so explaining it would be like explaining why there's rubber on the bottom of the shoe (for grip). Three, racing shoes are the most expensive and don't last too long. Things like thicker rubber you'd find in a daily trainer are heavier, but make the shoe last longer. The typical daily trainer lasts about 300 miles, while a racing shoe last about 100 miles. So with a tuning run before the race to test the shoe out, the racing shoe probably gets you through 3 marathons. You can push them farther, these are just typical numbers. Nylon plates you see more in the training version of the carbon plate shoes, though. Like the Saucony Endorphin line has the pro for racing and swift for training, and the swift is heavier, has more rubber, has a thicker upper, and uses a nylon plate instead of carbon.
First of all… All carbon plates will break if you bend them like this, your toe won’t bend at this angle normally when you run in them. Also there are a lot of carbon plated shoes out there are not “carbon fibre plate” instead they are “carbon infused plate”. Also the dual density foam other than cost and durability, it helps to stabilise the shoe as the PEBA foam are, as you said, very very soft, with the high plate placement the shoe will become very unstable if only PEBA foam is used for the midsole and of cause the production of PEBA is very different from EVA foam which make a race shoe expensive.
He was made aware of this years ago with his solovair boot review he just broke the beechwood shank assumed it was weak. He was corrected by Solovair Now he forgot again. lol
@@ShadeSlayer1911 its not that deep if you arent american, energy FOAM is the midsole foam and energy BLADE is the carbon blade. So if you arent on the spectrum or american its not that hard
So I can help here. The plate is probably TPU which is more or less a type of plastic. Sometimes with the extra squishy foams manufactures use that to stabilize the platform. Also, to that extent the split heel design is for stability. By giving you less to rock over in the middle, it makes the landing of the heel more square excessive rolloff to one side or the other. If you’re looking to do more running shoe stuff, I’d be happy to help. Credentials are that I am an old guy who runs who also happens to be a technical Director in engineering fields.
If you look at the design of the shoe, the plate is not designed to be a spring. It's not designed for that kind of bending force. It looks like it is for torsional rigidity *AND* isolating the 2 foams. Without the plate, the runner would see little benefit from the stiffer, responsive foam. The shoe would not put a bending force on the plate for it to snap because the foams would be giving. I very much doubt the plate would ever snap during running. It's made just as strong and expensive as it needs to be to do its job. It's not over-engineered for people to bend the shoes with their hands.
Typically, a carbon plate is for the reason u just said it's not meant for lol. I love how people will justify a product they don't own just because there a fan of the brand.
@@SteelAddicted No, it's not. A plate of any material in a running shoe is primarily for torsional rigidity. *Nike* put a carbon *fiber* plate in some shoes for a spring effect and designed it so that it would function that way. This shoe is obviously not designed the same way. If you don't know about running and running shoe performance design, don't comment and expose yourself as a fool.
@@JaySee5 I think ur wrong but ur entitled to ur own opinion but there is a reason more than one carbon plate is illegal in a running shoe if ur competing legitimately and it’s not because it offers more torsional rigidity lol.
@JaySee5 this is a copy and paste from Google just for u buddy. A carbon plate in a running shoe is designed to enhance energy return and improve running efficiency by providing a stiff, spring-like structure that helps propel the runner forward with each step, essentially acting like a lever to maximize the rebound from the midsole foam when the foot strikes the ground; this can lead to faster running times, particularly in races.

@@jeroen1989on has been a fairly gimmicky shoe company they look nice. More recent shoes are truly better as they get away from their “cloud design” and use more modern foams.
Another reason to have two different foams and different levels of density and "softness" is to basically provide both comfort and stability. The softer (usually PEBA) foam is placed closer to feet (so on the top section), and the stiffer ones at the bottom. Also I think the carbon plate in it is some kind of combination of TPU + carbon, but not the kind that was explained. I think the TPU plate is full sized and have some kind of indentation/mold to plug in the carbon plate, although it almost makes no sense to do that, it somehow does if they want to cut the production cost in this model. TPU plate is basically for torsional (side-to-side) stability, and the carbon plate is placed somewhat in the outer part of the shoe since a lot of runners gait belongs to the category to stride and put most of their weight with the outer part of the shoe, especially for fast runners.

The carbon infused plate is actually pretty common and it’s done for stiffening the plastic, at the expensive of making it brittle. And while the snapping here isn’t confidence inspiring, the amount of flex you get when running isn’t really anywhere near the flex required to break it so it’s not really an issue. Carbon fiber may be a better choice but it’d also snap since it’s not strong with force perpendicular to the fibers.

We had out customer connections ( like an open house) for work and we had over 900 people there and I think I can count the number of Nike's I saw on one hand. I also went to the clay country fair last weekend and saw almost no Nikes infact I do not recall seeing any. The most common brand I see is Skecher. I saw a few kiziks too, saw more kiziks at clay county fair than nike. I guess I am trying to figure out why they are such a big brand when I hardly see them. Then again maybe it is because I live in a small town.
Salomon was bought by Adidas in 2012, since then some technologies have been shared between the two companies. Some of the latest Adidas hiking-cross country releases are based on Salomon designs.
I knew as soon as it said 'carbon' instead of carbon fiber that they just put carbon dust in the plastic which is pointless if not counterproductive just so they could use the word Carbon in the marketing. Same with that single piece of rubber that they just died a different color to claim it's two different types . Dirty marketing is such a turn off even if the product is decent.
I call total BS on the carbon part! If that was real carbon fiber there's no way bending it that much would break it. 🤷 Edit: Even if they don't specifically say it's carbon fiber it's implied that it's bc calling it a carbon blade makes consumers think it's carbon fiber, which is deceitful AF. I can now add Salomon to the ever growing list of companies who will never see a dime of my money after this.
Sounds like you're recommending, not condemning, a premium priced running shoe that literally broke in your hand in two places...on video...and you're the one who posted it.
In my experience, Nike hasn't made quality products for a long time. I've had several pairs of their shoes over the years that fell apart WELL before they should have. I DO NOT buy Nike products
I'm so confused didn't Nike invent this type of running shoe? ... And a knock off that breaks at will and uses a cheaper foam that is less responsive is more "innovative" 🤷

Do more running sneakers, im tired of spending money on crap. lol It's just a suggestion but keep up the good work.
As a skinny dude, I’m not looking into shoes with carbon plates…however, no plate should break that easily. That’s ridiculous.
Salomon was bought by Adidas in 2012, since then some technologies have been shared between the two companies. Some of the latest Adidas hiking-cross country releases are based on Salomon designs.
Interesting!
Their quality went from fantastic to junk in that exact period of time too
What?! No, they were bought by Amer sports, not adidas.
@@QronoZ713 Amer Sports bought Salomon from Adidas, you are correct, I did not recall that the company had been sold.
Getting tantalisingly close to $100K of destroyed shoes…
Review more marathon running shoes bro. This is great because it’s only the Dr footwear guy who cuts them up and looks inside.
Let Zach do it and only him because he actually knows what he’s talking about.
@@Artemis-v8i Exactly, watching Weston talk about these shoes is like watching a caveman discover fire
@miljanstojiljkovic1782 yea he does fine talking about boots but he has no idea what he's talking about with running shoes
6:18 - oh-ooooww 😲
Well, no !
Thank you Salomon , but no 230$ from me !!!
It's lighter.
You forgot the most amazing feature of these shoes - "fugliness".
Day 2 of asking for a review of the dunk high bodega. Plzzzzz
Best running shoes:Topo
My carbon fiber skates taking 90mph slaps without a scuff.
Let me bend the shoe into a normal position. Snap.
Right. Carbon fiber.
Bro you just saved my $220!
Salomon did rollerblades in the 90's
its a bit unfair to compare this with the last nike shoe because they're different categories
something comparable would be the vaporfly
I call total BS on the carbon part! If that was real carbon fiber there's no way bending it that much would break it. 🤷
Edit: Even if they don't specifically say it's carbon fiber it's implied that it's bc calling it a carbon blade makes consumers think it's carbon fiber, which is deceitful AF. I can now add Salomon to the ever growing list of companies who will never see a dime of my money after this.
It's likely a milled carbon fiber injection molded thermoplastic.
Sounds like you're recommending, not condemning, a premium priced running shoe that literally broke in your hand in two places...on video...and you're the one who posted it.
Heck to the darned yeah
£315 for some plastic shoes that will most likely fall apart corporations have lost their minds lol 😂
Seeing some hype come from Salomon, they're capitalizing on new items recently
@6:13 SalomOFF
I like Keds
PR or ER.
Anybody calling it a "PB" is obviously scamming . . . 😮💨💔
In my experience, Nike hasn't made quality products for a long time.
I've had several pairs of their shoes over the years that fell apart WELL before they should have.
I DO NOT buy Nike products
There is no single brand that will ever push Nike out 😂 ever 😂
Its probably pebax or similar midsole
They put two layers because one is too mushy and they need more solid there or it would just be mushy
That's not a carbon plate. It's a compressed plastic plate. Likely compressed pebax.
None of my carbon plated shoes would break like that. They are way too firm
Outdoor brand ... running (Outdoor) shoe .
Its really not that much of a stretch
I'm so confused didn't Nike invent this type of running shoe? ... And a knock off that breaks at will and uses a cheaper foam that is less responsive is more "innovative" 🤷
Look like ankle breakers to me🙈!!! I did quite a few miles in the military and I definitely wouldn't buy something like that!!!
Never ever spending more than £100 on running shoes idc
when r u doing runnin shoe
$220 and made in China. How much of that $220 is hype, marketing and profit?
Salomon stock is dropping :)))
Imo it's a garbage shoe that would probably melt on the asphalt on a hot day , where you would be using these shoes at daily
Salomon doing shady crap like this puts them on my 'never buy anytng from these jerks' list.
