I bought a replica pair of Golden Geese from a Chinese seller on TaoBao for about $70 in 2018 and compared them to retail maybe a year later, when my rich niece-in-law got a pair. I am not kidding when I say that the fakes were better quality than the OG. The seller claimed that they were made with premium calfskin leather and I’m not sure if that much is true, but either way I couldn’t believe it when they were side-by-side. Even my niece thought so and wanted me to get her a pair of the fake ones 😂
I don’t wear them much anymore, as nowadays I pretty much only wear old skools and boots, but I did wear them for several years on and off and they’re still holding up just fine.

Like everyone else, same with the rest of clothing. You're looking at a Nike T-shirt, 50€+, but then you can walk into Primark/Penneys and buy a T-shirt for 2.50€ and they have all sorts of T-shirts for that price with different GSM values, from 120g/m2 to 300g/m2, you just don't get the Nike logo or prints, which I prefer. i have worn those kind of shoes for over 15 years now (my average price is 270usd for a pair). started with phillipe modell and when golden goose came out i used both brands, for me they are almost the same. The fat insole, will squish down and will make a very if not most comfortable feel after wearing them for a year or so. the biggest issue I had was the glue of the sidepart and the heel separating on various models. also the sidepart gets hard and brittle after stepping into special dirt like oil or other chemicals. to sum up, the most comfortable shoes for me with this look, but they fall apart on the sole too soon...far better quality than converse btw...

I bought a pair of Ball Stars about a year ago under the impression that they actually use some premium leathers. They are positioned as Italian luxury fashion.
The sneakers themselves ran extremely narrow and 1 full size long. I found them to be extremely uncomfortable to walk in for any reasonable length of time without some pain and fatigue. A miserable experience trying to break them in. Forget it if you have a normal to wide foot shape. I had to sell them.
Not worth more than $150 IMO.
Edit: Thanks for exposing the brand and please continue to expose more Italian lux footwear!

This would support the idea that I heard as a child. I remember being told that some times when some thing is a high price you are just paying for the name. This would be an example of that. It was being told things like that is the reason I typically stay away from hype or name brands and go with more affordable or generic. As I said though I have never seen these shoes, like ever.

  • @srenzilla

I am a footwear designer for a major sportswear brand, a few things I would note on these:
-the heel lining material could be an extremely premium synthetic (it might not be but synthetic leathers can be as or more expensive than traditional leathers) maybe could be cool to speak more about handfeel and abrasion resistance there vs a torch.
    - the built in heel lift to me seems to effect the silhouette pretty drastically. Some of the another shoes you showed that are better value have a pretty boxy shape vs the super low profile silhouette of the golden goose thangs. I imagine the lift is to make the shoes feel closer to an Oxford dress shoe.
-brand is everything for fashion product like this, definitely challenging to quantify that, sort of the price of artwork in my eyes.
Love the Channel, fun to see inside so many shoes!

The thing about golden goose is that although all their main model/collection types are similarly priced, the quality and the thickness and the finish varies across the collections.
My first pair was from the Stardan collection and I had absolutely no complaints about the built quality n leather. And then I ordered the exact same shoe you are reviewing here. This is from the Superstar collection which is supposed to be the most worn out looking collection, and I returned it back right away. The quality looked horrible compared to the first pair I owned from the other collection. Sole was terrible, the insides were literally exactly like u described… like some cheap car cloth. And the leather looked low quality. I believe with the superstar collection, they r intentionally going overboard with that worn out look. Definitely not for me.
Having said that, I love their Stardan collection. Would be nice if you could review those too. Very different. Especially the ones that aren’t designed excessively worn out. Still not worth the price but a huge difference in material quality compared to Superstar collection.

All the t shirts hoodies shorts etc are all bought in bulk in overflow warehouses for about a 1/3 a cent each then they put a silkscreen print on it and/or a patch or 2 then charge $400 for it. They literally use the same bulk shirt that shopping mall stores like Aeropostale use. They justify it to themselves by claiming they do it to pay for the haute couture dresses they make for actresses going to award shows and the major fashion shows. They also justify it by saying it opened up a new customer base because abuse the wealthy only buy their traditional products like Gucci’s slippers etc.

Corrected grain leather is the best for white shoes. The multiple layers of pigment give extra protection against staining vs semi aniline and its single layer pigment.
Semi aniline is more breathable and has the natural grain but more prone to staining.
Corrected grain is the best fit for purpose leather if you want to ensure maximum whiteness for longer. Also corrected grain has less wastage and you can use all of the hide, so more sustainable in the less wastage aspect but also more economical on scale.
