    If you're here, I presume you're wanting to learn right along with me! Thanks for helping me to create an environment where sharing imperfection in pursuit of constant learning is accepted. I'm glad you're here!

    You handled his moments so well - I love how you firmly told him what was acceptable behaviour and what wasn't, but like you said it came from a place without emotion. It's so easy to get emotional with horses and their training - I'm learning to set boundaries without emotion getting involved for my yearling at the moment. Thank you for sharing with us - you both have come so far ❤

      Thank you very much. I'm glad the 'emotion' element resonated with you too, that has been a huge takeaway for me and a real credit to my coach.

    I love that yr so much more confident in dealing with his upsets. You ride him so well and I personally think it's good for people to see the rougher bits as well as the good. He's still so young and learning what's what and you teach him in such a good way. It must be helpful to those who watch to relate to what he's doing and hopefully they will take how you deal with it on board. I just love this beautiful big boy and the bond u have is just lovely ❤😊

      Thank you for saying that, it’s so nice when other people notice, I definitely feel more confident in my position and my seat which I think helps a lot. And thank you, he’s a diamond 🥰

    Well done you and Hartley. I'm 58 with a 4 year old Irish Cob and it's all those little wins that build our horses confidence in us and having amazing coaches on the ground helping us. So exciting 🍀💚🇮🇪

    Thanks for sharing your day with us Rhi, it's so honest and shows just how much you want to learn about Harley growing and also the great relationship you have with your coach. You sat really well to his spooks and shy too! You are both such a great team 😊xx

    Thank you for sharing moments like this. You guys have already come on so much and I can't say how lovely it is to see a reality that most of us share. Even vicariously gaining experience from seeing you travel alone makes me want to brave it. I know the lesson wasn't perfect (and it isn't always!) that's just part of the reality as you so rightly say. Accept, move on, keep working at it gently. It's something I admire. It's lovely to find a supportive equestrian community like this. All the best x

      Ahh thank you so much for the feedback. And honestly driving the box alone for me is part of the achievement! Going there, on my own, tacking up on my own - it is all such a huge deal and I have to say, once I had one or two shorter journeys under my belt, they all started to feel a bit easier. Thanks for being here!

    Well ridden, and thank you for daring to share! I have a young horse too and sometimes feel so inadequate when I see everyone else doing perfect riding on social media. So great that you had your coach there who could talk you through it. Youngsters are such a work in progress aren't they (as are we as riders).

    Keep going, any one of us who have had several young horses over the years recognises that awful phase they go thru and quiet firm riding and total consistency always works. There is a reason as n eight year old is more money to buy than a five year old, someone else has dealt with that phase!!!

    • @RidingWithRhi
      @RidingWithRhi  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have backed my 4 year old 3/4 Irish draught gelding and he hasn’t put a foot wrong for 5 months until the other day and he bronked me off after we just walked away from the mounting block. He is 17.1 and it’s a long way down. The challenge is trusting them again at this age. I love him and I will work through it but at 58 years old I don’t know what I was thinking buying a 4 year old!
      I case anyone asks…he is in light hacking work a few times a week and schools for 20 minutes max. He has a saddle fitted to him/chiropractor and dentist. Thanks for sharing your ups and downs..it helps to see real life with a young horse. X

    Appreciate you sharing ups and downs! It makes you human! And makes me feel less silly! My boy just moved to a new agistment centre so hes still settling in. We had a saddle fitting on Monday and he did not behave and refused to work to be frank he was just being a little shit - I was mortified haha we all have good and bad days 😂

    I have a 7 year old ottb who also likes to test boundaries. This was very helpful! Well ridden and I totally agree with taking emotions out of it. Which can be hard sometimes. For me the emotion is usually fear not anger but none the less not helpful.

    • @RidingWithRhi
      @RidingWithRhi  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      100% this, it's something I'm actively working on too but I do think having the whole 'this isn't an emotional correction' in my head really helps me frame it correctly.

    my trainer always said keep them flexed to the inside and give little check ins by wiggling your ring finger to massage the bit on their mouth. They can't spook at something (barring sudden loud noises) if they cant look at it.

    • @RidingWithRhi
      @RidingWithRhi  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We always had a rule when he was younger that he was allowed to look, just not move off the line we’ve set - which helps reduce tension and get them comfortable. However, now it’s a big thing, we are doing similar to you, which my coach is describing in the video as “leg yield position”

  • @elizabethdonald5742
    @elizabethdonald5742 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Watch him fidget with his mouth then he comes to a point of putting his head up trying to avoid the bit, don’t think he is spooking in your lesson. If I were you I would try a softer bit, take a video and see if there is a difference.

    • @RidingWithRhi
      @RidingWithRhi  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I see what you’re saying, but he’s also been in this bit since October - we switched to this bit from a different one based on our experience and that of his previous owners and noticed a much better contact - which does settle once he settles again. Other bits are not off the table - I could definitely try a rubber bit (he’s in a snaffle with a lozenge) but I also think that running through from the contact isn’t just caused by not liking a bit and as this is a new behaviour, I’m inclined to believe that’s the case here.
      As with everything, working with my coach, we are always trying to look at the whole horse and evolve as we go!

    Awful moment. Horse spooks, outcome or control uncertain. I think you did well. Having a coach to encourage also helps a lot. Next time will be easier.
