With all good aspects of the Rebellion in mind, they were destined to fail. Yep, as long as you fit the right profile. Palpatine's regime is no different than human autocratic regimes throughout all history, and we're currently seeing it play out again in the good ole USA.
Although not directly said, it has been hinted at by Lucas that Palpatine and the Sith’s rise to power through the democratic system by undermining it was heavily inspired by the Nazis and their rise through the Weimar Republic before dissolving the Reichstag and turning Germany into a terror state.

7:32 You have misquoted Lord Acton to the point of completely misconstruing what he meant. The actual quote is “Power _tends_ to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This means that for one, not all people are corrupted by power. Just most people. Second, absolute power doesn’t corrupt completely, it corrupts absolutely. Meaning it is guaranteed to corrupt, unlike just regular power. Take, for example, Julius Caesar. He held great power in Rome, a level of power many would consider absolute. But he was not corrupted. For his entire reign, he was a man of the people. He gave to the Plebeians many rights that they just didn’t have under the Roman Republic. He also helped out the poor, having come from a poor background himself. It wasn’t until his successor, Caesar Augustus, that the Roman Empire became a tyrannical regime. Something that a lot of people forget is that there’s a difference between a dictator and a tyrant. All tyrants are dictators, but not all dictators are tyrants. Again, Julius Caesar was not a tyrant, but rather a man of the people. Yes, he was a dictator, but _not_ a tyrant. And thus we should remember not to misquote, as we end up changing the meaning of the original proverb and, usually, making it inaccurate. Here endeth the lesson.
People can say what they want about the Empire, but truth be told, The Galaxy was in much better shape when the Empire was in control, rather than when the new Republic was. That's why he was popular. One of many reasons anyway. Empire is way better at keeping order than the rebellion. Also think about the vong invasion, Which would you rather have in control, the petty new Republic, or the mighty Empire with their death stars and planet killing star destroyers? The Empire is a necessary force of darkness.
Even if you feel the empire was better than the new republic, the empire was far worse than the old republic. Had the sith grand plan never worked to cloud the force and corrupt many in the senate, the republic was clearly better for the people, while also being much less ruthless.
