- Here is a super common issue these newer chevy, gmc products have. Brake pedal becomes hard to press and brake do not work good at all without having to put excessive force down. This is how you fix the issue it is very easy just takes some time to do with some basic tools.

I have a 2018 equinox, had to buy the brake booster sensor from the dealership, first took it to oreillys and they hooked up their diagnostic to the suv code came up PO556. The dealership tried to convince me that they were not real readings and to get theirs would be $75. Long story short the safety feature would not let me put the car in drive. It shut off. They just quoted me a price of $2600. Told me my battery was dead is why the car keeps shutting off. I’m buying the sensor with pipe/ tube $66.99. But if I have to watch this a million times I will do it myself
It’s usually not the sensor. I’ve done tons of these and I want to say 98% of the time it’s the vacuum pump. It will say it’s the booster sensor because the booster Isn’t getting any vacuum from the pump. That’s what I’ve experienced 💁🏻♂️
@@menjicar 2019 Equinox with 30,000 miles P0556 code. It's either the pressure sensor or the vacuum pump. Do you believe the can be the culprit with so little mileage?
2018 Equinox 50k miles the car pretty much went brake less while driving pushing the pedal to the floor no results the pedal wasn’t stiff got the car home got my code reader got code P0556 Just ordered the sensor from the dealer yesterday so arrive tomorrow hope this fixes the problem if not I’ll be replacing the vacuum this weekend as well.

So I just replaced the pump and now I get hard brakes at low speeds and it pops up p0556 code should I now just replace the sensor?
Great video! They need to do a recall on these cars regarding this manufacturing defect. I lost my brakes today while driving and almost hit another car. Dangerous that this can happen while driving. Same error code so I have the same issue. The master cylinder/brake booster should always draw Vacuum from the engine not a pump that can fail at anytime while you are driving. I am calling Chevrolet tomorrow and filing a consumer complaint. Appreciate your video on this repair which I will do myself. After researching this, this is a common problem with these pumps failing, and a dangerous problem for people who own these cars.

@@menjicar ikr, I just took the pump out and I am fishing out of the engine large chunks of metal from the seized up pump with a magnet 🧲. On the pump bigger than life is stamped “made in China” on the pump lol. The screen is tiny in the pump. I am going to have to flush the engine out and change the oil or it will burn out the new pump quickly.

Thanks for the video my guy. I bought 19 equinox 3 months ago n my brakes failed while in motion. Almost rear ended someone. Thanks to you I was able to buy part from dealer n install it myself. All cost me $125. This needs to be recalled cus it’s a safety hazard. Imagine if you’re an elderly and have no brakes

I replaced it last year and it failed on me again while I was out of town this weekend. This is terrible I almost crashed into a car on the highway.

Thanks for this Video, 18 Equinox, My wife and granddaughter were at a Dr. appointment a few days ago and this Hard Brake thing happened to her on the way home, Ive owned Chevys my whole life and never had this problem with any of my cars or trucks. Cant believe this is a problem with the braking system. Should be a recall. 500$ at the dealer. Could of been an ugly accident.
Also it blew several codes, Power steering and brakes.
Bought a 2018 equinox to feel safe driving my young grandchild around, only to find this car is dangerous. My brakes malfunctioned while I was exiting the freeway with my granddaughter in the back seat and we came inches from hitting a garbage truck. Chevy needs to fix this.

This happened to me today in my 2022 Equinox. (31k miles)Brake pedal got stuck 95% of the way, making it very hard to brake. Almost ran a four way stop. Thank God I had just exited the freeway 2 min. earlier.

This exactly what happened to ke in my 2018 equinox...I was getting off the highway and the brakes just wouldn't go down....thank God nobody was in front of me because it took a while to stop
I just had one that came apart in shards! Ever see one of those pump shafts sieze and then snap the teeth off it? Cam sprocket has gouges and I only found half of the pieces, other pieces are not recoverable without taking the valve cover off. Ever see that??
UPDATE: Sent customer to dealer, they had to replace the camshaft $2000
*If yours comes out in pieces it likely damaged the camshaft reluctor wheel

Hi, has this issue yesterday.. Driving home and pedal went hard. Managed to drive home but now car doesn't start.. There seems to be liquid leaked from under the part you changed. I can source the part and change it but will it release the brake pedal (currently super hard) and will that then maybe let the car start. Weekend here and no mechanics or OBD2 scanner
What if you changed the vacuum pump but have a thump noise brakes are soft but have a thump noise

I also almost got into a very bad accident driving my POS 2018 Chevy Equinox with the ecotec 1.5 turbo. Brakes got hard on a 75 mph road in the mountains going downhill. We could’ve died. People need to be aware of this. PLEASE DO NOT BUY AN EQUINOX. 2018 AND UP. THESE ARE DEADLY PIECES OF SHT!
Don’t forget that if u don’t change it in time it brakes off and locks up the engine smh!!
I can’t seem to get to the bolt on the vacuum pump the hose connected to the intake pump is in the way
I have a 2016 Malibu that I just replaced this part on. It worked and everything runs like it's supposed to again but immediately after I change the part the check engine light came on. I've never seen the check engine light on in this car before until now. The cheap scanner I have isn't picking up the code but everything seems to be running like it's supposed to. Any suggestions?
Mine did the same and it was the crank shaft position sensor

Yes if hissing noise is coming from brake booster it is the booster that is leaking
Yea don’t by a Chevy Cruze or Malibu.
That brake pump is junk all over! Stupid idea and they do not even come good for it.

This is what I got in the report when I took it to the dealer and they gave me a quote of $3200. Would replacing the booster solve this?
What size was the bolt on the bracket holding that black hose I've tried every socket and nothing fits the damn thing

Why was there no rubber sealer?
So here is an interesting turn on this garbage design from GM. What might happen if the booster locks up internally? Something is going to break. And it was the housing around the shaft for the coupling where it connects to the exhaust cam shaft. Guess what else is attached to the exhaust cam shaft? The cam position reluctor that rotates on the cam and gives the pulse to the Exhaust CAM sensor to tell the ECM the timing of the two cam shafts. So when this thing came apart at 80 MPH not only did I lose power to the point where the engine died, I had a very hard brake pedal that I wasn't ready. Fortunately this didn't cause an accident. But it will. So for the this idiotic design that should have been a $100 repair and maybe 30 minutes I have to take the top of the engine apart to get to the cam to realign the reluctor on the cam shaft. Think this is what is wrong with mine right now.exactly same thing. It won’t stay on. Brake is hard. Same codes.

@@sm14852it was 2018 Malibu. Replaced the vac pump and aligned the cam position sensor in the front cam that was knocked out of position by the broken chunks of aluminum
Changed the pump and sensor still hard break pettle

I have a question. I have to drive home from Arizona to El paso and the engine light turns on and off. I went to autozone and they gave me the clde p0556 . But the lights off right now. What u think ?

My 2018 Terrain has this issue and more, have to change valve cover because the pump froze. When will GM take this problem to a recall ? It was done for other years with this issue, my kids were in my car when my pump went out and I almost put the car into a big rock. BTW the other years have this same pump and the recall changed the pump style.

Brake cleaner but you can even use rubbing alcohol or gas something that will clean but will evaporate so it doesn’t go into the engine and stay there
