One tip I learned from the Rennlist forums was to get a bottle of Deoxit D100 and drip it on any connection in the gauge cluster (actually, I ended up putting a drop on every electrical connection in my 928 as I touch them...) and just let the cleaner sit. Many of the connections in my car were corroded with varying amounts of green or brown copper oxides. The gauge foil in mine was just nasty, but the Deoxit turned the oxides to a green sludge that easily wiped off with a paper towel. Regarding the speedo, I ended up finding that a few of the capacitors in mine had failed, as well as a Zener diode, after having to dig into the cluster myself when a local speedometer shop decided it was beyond their comfort level.
Hi Allen, good tips, I'll see if I can get some Deoxit in the UK. Im hoping my cluster all works as it actually seems in reasonable condition (I think!). I am slowly going through it while I wait for the odometer cog to arrive. Thanks for watching!
Hello Todd,Great to see your working with your 928 and trouble shooting 😮 I’ve been out of action to moving forward with my 928,due to heath( Bilateral Lung Transplant) Electrical gremlins seem to inherit 928’s even on the newer GTS cars as well I’ve had my dash pod out and Rennlist is helpful for step by step advice Currently the Jump Post Power Terminal requires replacement as the oem Bakerlight unit is prone to cracking😢 It could be part of why the car will cut out? We call it the “Could Be Car”, as no one put there finger on what is really causing it to cut out😮 I have been told by a Porsche mechanic that worked on 928’s when new,at the base of the distributor can cause the engine to cut out There is a co in the UK that rebuilds Bosch distributors and if I pursue that, that would be another tick✅ In the meantime Todd, I’m at the point of doing the LS V8 Conversion 😮 Everyone reading this post will be gasping for breath! I have everything ready for the conversion a 6.0 engine,Kooks long tube headers,GM Bellhousing,Stage 2 clutch& pressure plate assembly, upgraded Radiator etc The kit is supplied by Renagade Conversions in LasVegas and the engine I sourced locally It only has 80 kilometres from new and that came out of a GTO Pontiac That’s currently being checked prior to installation etc Oil pump will be upgraded,Trunion, rockers,Stage 2 (BTR Camshaft) Brian Tooley Racing) etc,so that will be netting around 406 hp Gearbox we may upgrade to a T56 6 speed Does seem a pity to go this way but the GM engine is much easier to diagnose and a lot less expensive ( in my case)😊 I’ll let you know Todd if the replacement battery power terminal works Keep up the great work your doing Cheers Frank✅✔️
Hi Frank, sorry to hear the health problems, but glad you are on the mend! Are you doing the engine swap because of the issues, or for other reasons? Will be interesting to see how it goes!
@@MrToddgibbs Hi Todd, Yes as nice as my car is,the biggest difficulty I have had in time I have owned it (15 yrs) is trying to sort out the start/Stopping issue 😩 The car has the ( nick name) “It could be” I have had 3 so called Porsche experts look at to no avail, and basically are not interested in pursuing the problem😩 A mechanic who did work on 928’s new told me at the base of the distributor can give trouble, with the start/stopping I did contact a co in the UK that does rebuild Bosch distributors, but haven’t moved further yet Todd For sure the purists 928 owners, would not approve on a LS engine going into a 928,but it’s reliability I’m looking for Actually the engine transplant can be done ✅ in a weekend, its connecting The ancillary parts that take a little longer I’m upgrading the radiator also, for better cooling Cheers Todd Frank✅
Todd, Yes the reason for going down the route of the LX 76 engine is for reliability and simplicity in doing repairs A matter of putting in the OB2 for trouble shooting/diagnostics etc The alternator is in a better place (up instead down),clutch's are much less expensive etc, The 6.0 engine i have is a low milage engine, but it will be coming apart and being checked thoroughly Cam shaft will be upgraded, trunnions&rockers valve springs pushrods, possibly LS3 heads, larger intake etc So the engine will be spot on and reliable I did consider rebuilding my oem engine and it only has a (113 miles) from new so why would i do that? I'm only the second owner of the car and i know it's highly desirable being a manual l and fully optioned from new,and even has Cup rims Cheers Todd Frank
Hi Frank, 113 miles - wow, I'd love that :) ... makes sense, it will be super smooth and reliable :) Good luck and stay in touch, will be interesting to hear how you get on!
Good Job, keep it up. As you have found the foil with the copper tracers embedded (for want of a better term) is quite fragile so you need to treat it gently. I have been in there a few times over the years trying to tracing issues and each time I have given all the contacts a good clean. A drop of electrical cleaner on a cotton bud followed by a 'gentle rub' with a soft rubber eraser brings them up like new and well worth doing. Better than a very fine emery paper or similar that could damage the surface.
Hi Redkenj - yes I have wiped everything with electrical contact cleaner and it all seems clean now. Ive tested a lot of the circuit and it seems good :)
While you have the pod off and accessible that you consider removing each of the lights, clean the copper contact on the foil and the tabs on the bulb holder and replace the small bulbs. I have found that I have put the pod back in the car only to find a bulb has either a very low output (due to ageing) or has blown. Bit of a pain having to take it out again to fix them.
Agree on deoxit! Helped me several times with my board. I actually messed up and snapped my Speedo needle..after I had solved a jumping speedo by cleaning everything my odo stopped working so I went in to tighten it up with copper wire but I snapped the speedo needle. Sigh. Countless hours lost. Ended up shipping it out and over $1k later…works fine. I think I have the old plastic circuit board as I had mine replaced. It was/is in fairly good condition, did some soldering on it for speedo needle and cleaned it all up. Can u use it/do u want it. Off 86.5.
Hi Steve Oh it sounds like another painful journey :) glad you resolved in the end. Where are you based? A spare might come in handy if this one doesn’t work…. I’m in UK/Oxford
Todd, perhaps the issue with your speedometer not working properly is possibly the transmission output shaft speed sensor maybe has a faulty pickup or broken wire inside it. The speed sensor has a magnet that reads between teeth on a gear within the tail shaft of the transmission. This might also make the speedo needle stick in one spot and I say MIGHT, just a thought and I could be wrong. Best clean up all the terminals behind your dash and get rid of any corrosion too. Great video mate, good to see your doing OK back there too.
@@MrToddgibbs Jammed huh, it's just the Tacho giving a reminder to you of just how old this car is. To be honest I don’t know yet if the Speedo works or not. The techo definitely doesn’t but I can see why (it’s jammed).
