Those replacement headlights really look in excellent condition Todd.
I was rooting for you when you 1st tested the working operation of the lights.
It's probably another easy fix as the lights came up 3/4 of the way, I bet it's the motor alignment on the shaft, trial and error as they say.
I've been with you on this build since the get go and I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far.
Much respect with you for keeping at it, that's dedication in a nutshell.
    Stay safe Todd.
    Terry.

Thanks Terry :) you are definitely one of my oldest viewers, and I really appreciate that. The lights go fully up now, but not down. I suspect it’s inside the motor/gearbox where there is a disc that controls direction. I will take a look tomorrow.
      Thanks, as ever :)

    Hi Todd,
Great progress. Loving the original colour that you can see on the cross member just behind the bumper.

@@MrToddgibbs You're welcome. I'm watching with real interest as I almost purchased an S4 several years ago but backed out at the last minute due potential bork factors. Regret that decision to this day. Watching you're vids now makes me slightly envious but in good way.

Hi John, we all live with car regret. There are many that I shouldnt have sold, and one that I should have bought. Is it too late to grab something to tinker with?

    Todd,
Great progress, I would go for getting it on the road and drive some local trips, then you can plan each project with minimal down time. Also on my 928 and 924 I try to get an eBay part that I can rebuild ahead of time and just swap it out with the old part, then your current on rebuilding that part to save or put it on eBay as a rehabbed part!

    • @MrToddgibbs
      @MrToddgibbs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Dan, totally agree - thats where Im heading. Although cars in UK don't need a road worthiness test after 40years old there are a few basic requirements (lights, speedo, etc). Speedo will be out for a while as I am trying to locate dial faces. Once they are done I think I am just lacking brake lights (oh, and working headlights).
Great idea with the parts swap - my problem is that I dont have the capacity to think very far ahead (work, kids etc keep me busy). But its a great plan - if possible I will try :)
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hi Todd. Be super careful of that top circlip holding the arm to the bar. They are known to come off, and it will send the arm straight through your radiator….not good!

Hi Todd. I had more or les the same problem with my head lights, and it was related to bad contact in the gear motor contact points. I had to clean the contact points and also clean the printed circuit boad contact lines.
    Thank you for your videoes.

      Hi Todd.
Yes it can be rather difficult to locate where the problem is. Looking at the diagram there are 5 different relays and 3 switches in the head light system. First I would suggest to check the brown/pink wire going to the motor. As far as I can see this wire should supply + to the motor when you switch off the head light.
      Kind regards Arne.

I reckon it would be worthwhile using some silicone grease on those plastic bushings when reassembling the headlamps arms again.

Was that car originally brown?.... noticed the header panel, where the hood latches to is brown..... what color are you having it painted? One last thing, if you haven't done it already, make sure you clean all grounds and all contacts in the wiring (connectors, fuse panel, all new fuses, and also clean relay plugs). This can and usually solves a lot of electrical problems. She's coming along great.... keep it up!!!

    • @MrToddgibbs

Hi Shannon. Yes car was mocha black. I resprayed the engine bay the correct colour while the engine was out since I’m not ready to do the full respray. It will go away at some point to be full sprayed. Ground contacts are all good - thanks for watching !

Oh nice! what colour is the interior? that is what I am trying to decide now. I keep finding signs that the interior was re-painted black, but it seems too much work for someone to have done... so Im confused what the original colour was. For example, if I look under the dash (or move the little clip that protects the leather from the seatbelt (on the B-pillar) I can see a light tan colour. The door inserts, when removed, are dark brown on the back. But everything visible is black...
